Here’s WHY the Lakers REFUSE TO TRADE Austin Reaves.. | Lakers Future with Reaves + Long-Term Value

[Music] welcome back everyone among the many trade rumors that we have heard about the Lakers have remained adamant about not wanting to trade one certain role player with that player being Austin Reeves throughout pretty much every trade conversation they have had reports have indicated that they have been very against trading him even for a borderline Allstar like deante Murray and well that apparently remains true again heading into the offseason according to Yovan bhha the athletic the Lakers would prefer to keep him longterm instead of trading him reaffirming their desire to make him a long-term piece to their team which the fan base seems to be very split about for whatever reason a lot of people turned on him this season he went from being the No Doubt fan favorite of their team to now being a guy that is legitimate haters and it really caught me off guard considering him having a pretty damn good year Along being more than worth the contract they gave him and with that in mind we are going to talk about why the Lakers someone want to trade him both from a financial and production standpoint too and then play Devil’s Advocate by talking about why they maybe should think about trading him and in what kind of situation it would actually make sense but without further Ado let’s dive right into it and well whenever a team finds an undrafted gem that turns out to be a quality player they tend to become a bit attached to that player which I think you can make the argument for with how the Lakers feel about Austin Reeves although it’s definitely not only about attachment there is a legitimate quality player here and not only do they want him to stick around long term but so does he too which he made very clear back around the trade deadline when his name was popping up in trade rumors Austin uh there were reports over the weekend that your name was kind of being in certain trade packages but but also that the Lakers didn’t want to include you uh I guess what’s it like the deal with hearing your name in the news but then also kind of uh hearing that the Lakers didn’t want to include you and and kind of the the way that they value you uh what I was told from you know basically day one of coming into the league you know it’s a business so and you know everybody wants to work to you know get better so you got to think about it that way uh if you see your name and something you know it’s not real until it actually happens so that was really my mindset um but you know seeing the uh the stuff about you know like there’s not one to you know add me and stuff um I mean amaz a lot um I want to be here I want to be a part of you know what we got going on and you know like I said I want to be here you again the feeling is mutual between them the Lakers view him as a long-term member of their team and I imagine that he would like to be that as well but why exactly do they value him so highly and well you really have to understand what value means in the NBA I think a wide majority of the fan base that turn on him does not know anything about the salary cap which directly dictates the value of a player compared to their contract if we’re talking about last season his contract took up less than 9% their team salary cap over 20% less than ruy haimura when you compare their contracts who he greatly outplayed by the way about 30% less than D’s contract compared to it and then over 300% less than both LeBron and Anthony Davis compared to their contracts I mean the guy was top four on their team in points per game assists per game assist to turnover ratio three-point shots made per game free throws made per game and free throw percentage making him more than worth his $12 million salary not only that though but of every single player in the entire league making Under 12 million he ranked in the top three in both points per game and assists per game so not only is he maybe the most valuable contract on their team but he was one of the most valuable contracts in the entire league and if you’re complaining about that then you flat out do not understand how money works in the NBA I mean it’s not NBA 2K you can’t just turn off the salary cap and go wild if you hope to have a good team then you need guys to help perform their contract and not simply your star players in fact I would argue that it’s even more important to have role players to help perform their contract that to me is where the real value comes in guys like Austin Reeves Dante Devan chenzo Josh Hart Nas Reed Derrik Jones Jr and many more that made right around or even under the $12 million non-t tax Fair mid-level exception it’s really not up for debate every team needs guys like that to fill out their rotation with we love talking about the star players but they get sent home all the same without having a good Supporting Cast around them and the most important part of that as finding good value which again all comes down to a player’s contract now I would completely understand if fans wanted to trade Reeves due to having a short-term contract and likely demanding more money with him the near future but that’s simply not the case here he is fresh off of signing a 4-year contract with them less than a year ago today and throughout the entire duration of that contract he will not be making more than 10% of their team’s salary cap in any one year and if you’re talking about contract value that should be exactly what you are looking for now a lot of people tend to get mad at him for not being a great defender but I don’t think you should be expecting a guy that’s making under 10% of your team salary cap to be perfect I mean pretty much every player is a f to even the best of the best so why can’t a role player that’s only making around 12 million Pere on average I’ve seen plenty of people using that as their entire argument for wanting him to be traded and sure I wish he were a great defender too but it’s not like that alone makes him not worth that contract and in reality he’s not even that bad on defense no he cannot be hor should be your primary defender on the court but it’s not like he wanted to fill that role in the first place that came down to them having a flawed roster with plenty of injuries and with the only other options their lineup being either D or haimura then yeah they really did not have much of a choice but on a better team with more defense and good health he will not be a problem on defense and then with how productive he is offensively compared to his contract value there is very little you can find a complaint about here simply put that right there is why they prefer not to trade him and then then when you adding the fact that he’s still relatively young yet with him only turning 26 a couple of days ago there is a lot of long-term value here I mean if you only gets better throughout the 3 years remaining on his contract which is very believable given how old he is then he could end up being the most valuable contract in the entire league throughout that time frame and when you actually take the time to factor in contract value that is when you can begin to understand what they have in Austin Reeves no they’re not calling him an Allstar or anything like that but they do recognize the tremendous long-term value they have with this contract and with that in mind they’re completely right by not wanting to trade him it would be nearly impossible to find the same kind of value in return again I’m not talking about comparing him to a star player that kind of player makes three or four times more than what he does yes you can include Reeves in a trade to get that kind of player but then you’re not talking about one for one value you would then have to combine Reeves with multiple other players although on draft picks to make that trade happen and at that point you’re going all in on one single player to be worth more than them which is definitely taking a risk but with that in mind what kind of situation might make it worth doing and in my opinion the only kind of one they would be gting a player that is equally if not even a better contract value compared to Reeves and that is all around a more complete player AKA being a legitimate two-way player I really don’t understand the people that want to trade Reeves but then the player they want to return for him is another oneway player that to me would be making more of a lateral move considering everything they would have to give up though there are there are a few guys that might be worth it one of which being Mel Bridges if we’re talking about contract value then he might have the very most valuable contract in the entire league he will be making under 25 million per year for the next two years now and we’re talking about a guy that can be a number two scoring option A legitimate lock down Defender and then an efficient high volume three-point shooter all inone that to me would be the kind of trade that would be worth making for Austin Reeves you’re getting both great contract value and a two-way player in return for him and that to me would be well worthwhile upgrade now I think you could make a smaller argument for a guy like Deonte Murray who can be a two-way player when he wants to be although having a Team friendly contract as well but male Bridges have to be the perfect example in my opinion and with very few guys like that being available there’s simply not many guys worth Trading Austin Reeves for therefore why they refuse to trade him but with all of that being said what do you guys think how do you feel about the Lakers being heavily against Trading Austin Reeves let me know your thoughts in the comments ments down below that will do it for this 1. The value on AR is his contract and his production. You donā€™t get anyone for 12 mil anymore that provides those stats. At the same time, he had a great year DESPITE having little to no rest from the olympics.

  2. I agree. Would only consider trading AR only for Mikal Bridges. Another high value contract and relatively young player that we can benefit for the short and long term

  3. I think AR had a down year compared to last year going into the playoffs.

He was shooting lights out and playing above his pay grade.

This year he looked tired from FIBA play and his rhythm seemed off until Allstar break.

I would love to see him play better than he did last year. He got targeted on defense and his 3 point % was down and would make costly turnovers which he didnā€™t do as much previously.

If I had to choose between AR or the Bald Mamba. I would probably prefer to go with the Bald Mamba.

  4. IF ITS FOR A STAR PLAYER YES TRADE HIM . BUT IF IT'S FOR ROLE PLAYERS NO. HE KINDA LAZY IN OFFSEASON HE NEED TO STRENGTHEN HIS BODY, BUILD MUSCLES IMAGINE IF HE HAVE A BODY OF ALEX CARUSO. AND HE IS ALREADY 26 YRS OLD C'MON HE GOING TO BE A ROLE PLAYER FOR THE REST OF HIS CAREER

  5. Austin Reaves is a solid player. However, we need someone much bigger than him who can guard someone like Micheal Porter Jr and Aaron Gordon because AR guarding those two guys would likely get cooked because heā€™s only 6ā€™5 and Aaron Gordon is stronger than him while MPJ is taller also. I think getting someone like Luka Doncic and Daniel Gafford will be better for our team because Luka is 6ā€™8 who can shoot over the top of taller defenders and Gafford is 6ā€™10 whoā€™s a great rim protector who can block shots, and whoā€™ can hit his free throws.

  6. gimme dejounte over reeves anyday!!

i think we might be able to get dejounte without trading reaves, BUT i would throw him in if we can get onyeka from atlanta too. do this, sign gary harris on mle, cp3 and buddy on min, prince.

    dejounte, gary, lebron, AD, onyeka
    cp3, buddy, prince, vando, wood
    fire squad

  7. Good. Non-Laker fans wonder why and think he's just a scrub, but anyone who watched him play knows that he's the glue guy for the Lakers. You need a glue guy on a team that can get it done when the stars aren't, especially when playing with LeBron. Draymond was the glue guy for the Warriors, K-Love for the LeBron-led Cavs, Bosh for the LeBron-led Heat, Jason Terry for the Dirk-led championship Mavs, Jrue Holiday for the Giannis-led Bucks, etc. They do the things that don't show up on stat sheets like hustle plays and making the right decisions at the right time. That 3rd/4th option on the team is just as important as the 1st & 2nd options. For a minute, we were debating on if D'Lo was the glue guy, but it seems he has a habit of disappearing in the playoffs.

  8. I don't why you're trading your young players when they can still improve. Like letting go of Caruso now Lakers fans regrets now . There will have a chance to get a very good player when that time comes you will have a solid core to go for championship.

  9. I don't understand people, hating on Reaves or Prince. They give you so much versatility per $. And Austin is very loyal to the team, too. Lakers problem is Hachimura's and Vincent's contracts buying them almost nothing, while the team is desperately laking 3-and-D.

  10. No reason, to trade AUSTIN REAVES. Its better, if he stays
    With the Lakers. My friends,
    Remember ALEX CARUSO?
