Jayson Tatum ENJOYED Playing with Kyrie Irving | Celtics Media Availability

questions for Jason Jason um how you looking forward to the Mavericks as a match up here in the finals and what are you taking from your first experience in the finals um two years ago in the series yeah uh it’s a lot that you know myself and and and we can learn from that experience being in the finals um and you know this time this go around is uh a lot different obviously we’ve been there before we came up short um and you know great opportunity um to to make it to the finals again you know then you don’t always get a second chance so U really just looking at it as a second chance and um trying to simplify things as much as we can it’s just it’s another series that um we got to win obviously one of the story lines of the series will be Kyrie going against his former team when you look back at your experience with him here what was it like playing with him early in your career here and what do you kind of make of what the atmosphere in the crowd might be like obviously they’ve gotten on him here in the past when he’s returned uh yeah I mean obviously it was some ups and downs but I think uh for me being a first second year player um being around a a superstar essentially every day um and seeing now to to navigate that space um and then you know obviously own theore he’s one of the most talented guys I’ve ever seen so uh you know seems like a a very long time ago but uh there’s a lot of I got a lot of great memories you know from having c a teammate Jason you guys have talked about this a little bit this is a huge break in between series for you guys uh at the allstar break Joe said he hates breaks he even said he wish there wasn’t a halftime uh how do you guys mentally stay locked in during these long breaks and what are you guys doing in practice and how is Joe like sort of keeping you locked in and avoiding that potential let down or just breaking uh just understand the the moment that we’re in um obviously you know having a couple days or nine days off um is you know kind of good for your body right and things like that and everybody to to get healthy uh but you know we’re in the NBA finals and you know we’re all so anxious and and excited to play uh that you know I wish I wish it did start a little bit earlier uh so we could get after it but uh you know a lot of guys who have been here before uh we understand the magnitude of this moment and staying sharp and staying fresh U and staying ready you guys are generating the most points in crunch time of any team that got past the first round you have the highest net rating in the clutch how what have you seen in terms of this team’s growth under pressure and how has that prepared you for facing Kyrie and Luca in those moments uh I think our ability to uh talk through things and and and practice and shoot around and walk through um things while we’re here and see things in film and uh being able to translate that into the game and knowing what we’re trying to get to and late game situations what actions are we looking for uh and essentially everybody being on the same page Jason obviously you’re a guy who tries to get to the line a lot and is also guarding the leite players like I’m sure they’ll be guarding and luk are both in this series with the way the game has shifted and officiating over the past few months or it’s a lot more physical there’s less fouls called has that caused you to like mentally change any of your approach in terms of whether it’s expecting less calls or being able to play more physically defensively or or anything with the way things have shifted so much uh yeah I mean the playoffs is a totally different an one I feel like especially as series goes on um you know I I think the refs kind of want us to make the play right and um only necessarily calling fouls that they they have to and uh it goes both ways you know they they definitely let you play a lot more they not calling a lot of the holes and grabs um unless it’s necessary so uh and it it’s it’s been like that you know every year in the playoffs um so just understanding how it’s going to be uh you know especially the further along you go deep into the playoffs Jason when KP comes back back this will be his first time playing beyond the first round he’s talked about how when he first got here he really came to you and jayen was like I’m ready to sacrifice I want to fit into what you guys are doing so I guess looking back at the entire season how do you feel like KP kind of like honed and sacrificed his game to fit into what you’re doing and how has that really empowered everybody yeah uh you know KP essentially did exactly what we needed him to do um the entire season right whether it was punish switches or or space um the fiveman you know and being the corner sometimes that might be you know going possessions without touching the ball or it may be when they’re switching we give him the ball five times in a row uh and you know Joe talks about everybody just open mindness right to whatever we’re trying to do um we switch things up a lot and you know we have so many talented gifted players um on the offensive and defensive end that everybody just have to uh be open to trying different things and I give KP a lot of credit that you know especially somebody as talented as he is and obviously as tall as he is um a lot of big guys may be stuck in their ways right doing what makes them comfortable and uh you know he he got outside his comfort zone a little bit and it made us a better team you were asked about the 201819 season earlier this year said that was terrible um that was Kyrie’s last season here was there anything from that Journey uh and how poorly things went that kind of changed you and what did you take from that about kind of approaching things differently with with later teams uh yeah I think you know just learning that uh being on in such a talented team that uh it’s not just Talent that’s going to take you over the top right you have to have um guys that are willing to sacrifice guys that are willing to um do the other things in order for the team to to have a chance um and it wasn’t just like it wasn’t a Kyrie thing it was all of us like we all took part in um why that season wasn’t a success uh and we all learned from it we all moved on you know you know some of us stayed here other guys left uh and have done great things you know since that season um so I I just look at that as a learning experience um you know for my second year Jason are you still in any kind of regular touch with Kyrie and does it feel like this year that there’s he kind of turmoil surrounded him it felt like a lot of times in in Brooklyn for whatever reasons does it feel like this year he’s he’s more at peace and and playing more within more within himself without that other stuff around him yeah uh it does seem like you know Dallas obviously has been a great fit there in the NBA finals and uh the the staff and the the team right they all just kind of gel together and uh it’s great right it’s great to see Kai out there playing at an extremely high level and um doing all the the special things that that we love to see him do um and and have fun doing it uh yeah talk to KY every every once in a while throughout the season um obviously especially when we when we play Dallas and when I saw him at Allstar and things like that Jason you touched earlier on this long break going up to game one but how else does this feel different for you guys especially with the fact that you get to open this series here after a break just curious how that kind of impacts and how it feels going into game one yeah uh this is unique for a lot of us uh it’s kind of the quickest we’ve ever gotten through um a first second and obviously a third round um you know a lot of previous years we had a couple game seven series um that you know just kind of extend the playoffs so um I think it was great for us to close out series when we were supposed to um and it’s afforded us to have this this nice break um and you know obviously the work we put in through the regular season that we could start the finals at home this

BRIGHTON — At Celtics practice on Saturday, Jayson Tatum reflected on his time as teammates with Kyrie Irving, despite the team’s struggles during that period. He said, “It wasn’t a Kyrie thing, it was all of us. We all took part in why that season wasn’t a success & we all learned from it.” Tatum emphasized that the responsibility for the team’s challenges was shared and that they have all grown from the experience.

  1. My boi put on sum more muscle since they been at home let get jt and jb and jrue jr gone be MVP just watch I said it💪💪💪💯💯 and kp lets go

  2. A lot of media have jumped on the Dallas bandwagon and undermining the Celtics season and run, it’s time for the team to simplify and focus on playing team basketball at a consistent level and the results will take care of themselves

  3. From Jrue to Al Horford main 6 guys I looked up how many playoffs games they each played them added them up.

576 career playoff games combined Al makes up for the majority.

    Thats crazy

  4. Enjoy working with a finger-pointing, ego-maniac, self-regarded superstar?
We all remember what happened in the 17-18 season; yeah, so glad the C’s just moved on!

  5. No hate to KY anymore , we can get over the break up Boston …. End of the day we loved KY but we both came out the break up better off

Happy for ya KY ,,, great baller here in boston we just loved your game an hurt to loose ya

  6. PLEASE! JUST SWEEP THE MAVS. 🙏 im very annoyed how they disrespect the C’s. Bring the wrath all over them!

  7. The BEST thing to happen to the Celtics was Kyrie leaving.

Ainge was ready to pull the trigger on JT or BOTH Jays to pair Kyrie with AD.

AD said if the C's trade for him, he's GONE in a year. Have we forgotten that ???

We wound up with Kemba and just rolling with JT and JB , and they have grown into the BEST duo in the league.

IDGAF about Kyrie now. Good for him that he found a team. We have the team we're SUPPOSED to have. With the two main guys, WE DRAFTED.

    Who WANT to be here.

    I don't give Kyrie a thought.

  8. Wonder what adjustments each coach will make after game 1. I don't see Kidd changing Mavs starting line up yet. Maybe if KP starts he might go to Lively starting. Cuz he's a better perimeter defender than Gafford.
