Spurs Prospect Breakdown: Devin Carter | SSPN Clips
and that is going to move us in to the Devin Carter Prospect breakdown he is a point guard from Providence uh the Friars like Chris Dunn that was like the last kind of point guard that I remember coming out of Providence not that that is what uh not trying to make comparisons for Devin Carter to Chris Dunn I think he has a much higher ceiling than that but he also does have some spurs connections with his dad I think Anthony is his first name know his last name is Carter Anthony Carter I’m pretty sure is his name uh played for the Spurs in 2003 and was also an assistant for the Austin Toros when they were the Austin Toros uh I believe for two to three seasons from like 2015 to 2017 so there are some spurs connections there for him uh and also he’s the son of an NBA player um but he was this year’s Big East 2023 24 player of the year uh he was a true Junior we’ll get into his Prospect profile uh real deep here in a second Ethan but I’m going to Dish it to you on some of your takeaways while I pull up some of the stuff that I’ve got here on Devin Carter sure uh I think he’s more of an immediately ready toel kind of player at 22 years old uh I’m so surprised I I hadn’t heard his name until literally last week um because based on his tape and what I read about him looking at his statistical numbers last year um he’s a guy that could absolutely help the Spurs I think most people have him as a late lottery pick uh maybe moving up a little bit closer to to the U low 10 or even at us at eight a lot of people think he’s a guy that can fit with the Spurs at number eight I wouldn’t be upset about it at all Jude we can we can would you like me to break into it right now my Prospect profile or do you want to pull something up before I do so let’s just go ahead and jump into this this is what I had pulled up earlier I forgot about this let’s just read what gavone has to say about him as he’s now at number 13 on gon’s Big Board and then I’ve got some other stuff that I’ll pull up but while I’ll do that I’ll dish it back to you for just kind of your breakdown on things we’ll read this Carter has significant momentum as he’s in the midst of an outstanding month that has him knocking on the door of the draft lottery he measured well and tested as arguably the best athlete in this draft at the combine posting historic figures that included a 42-in vertical leap and shuttle and sprint times that put him in Elite comp Carter also had one of the best pro day showings we saw in either Chicago or Los Angeles putting his Olympic level athletic ability on full display and knocking down 30 foot pull-up jumpers with ease as he did All Season at Providence teams looking for immediate backcourt help starting with the San Antonio Spurs at eight and the Memphis Grizzlies at number nine have significant interest in Carter as his draft stock may continue to climb the next month as he get gets into private workouts and this is why we’re doing this Prospect breakdown in the first place I was going through this article and I was like well this would be a great thing to do if we just went through all the prospects but when I saw that gavon was reporting that we have significant interest in Carter I was like okay let me check this guy out um but yeah Ethan I’m going to pull up some of the other stuff tell me what are some things that you saw what were some things that you liked from Carter we see our man Drew in the comments he says lots to like about Carter what are some of those things Ethan I think the first thing you have to talk about with him is his intangibles he is a winner um he has the mindset and hustle of a winner one of his first comparisons that I had pulled up is a guy like Derek white who we are all extremely familiar with things that he brings defensively um and then I also added Josh Hart to that mix because they have very similar builds and statures um Josh Hart is a hard-nosed Defender I wouldn’t call him the same level of as a Defender as Derek White but also his rebounding ability at that guard is very similar to Mr Carter Carter’s around 63 64 193 pounds but with a 6 foot n wingspan and part of was one of his biggest strengths with that 6 foot n wingspan was his defense of course but a natural shot blocker and he can just get guys in his little range and put them into like prison basically um and his size his shoulders his build is not like like a typical NBA player it’s more of like a linebacker build which gave me shades of Lou dorts physicality for the Oklahoma City Thunder um other strengths super athletic obviously with that 42 inch vertical an aggressive finisher I wouldn’t call him like otherworldly playmaker but I think he has a high IQ passer I think he makes the correct reads through traffic um and a very accurate passer I think he used bounce passes at the appropriate times he used spin on the ball uh when driving in transition to get guys better looks and when he kicks out to three-point Shooters every pass that I saw from his tape was right into the guy’s shooting pocket so is he going to get you nine 10 11 assists a game I don’t think that that’s necessarily his strong suit um but is he going to make the right pass the right read and not be a guy where the ball glues to his hands absolutely uh he plays the right way possible weaknesses I mean I don’t know if these are necessarily what I think but this is definitely just what people say his frame sl size being only 6’4 built like a linebacker rather than a normal looking NBA player could be considered a weakness um is he a true point he’s kind of a combo guard he kind of plays more of a two I feel like kind of like a Derek white but at 6364 um the classic phrase he is a jack of all trades but will that make him a master of none uh and then of course his age being 22 years old uh and some people were questioning his jump shot and articles that I was reading earlier this week I mean he shot 37% on four attempts and it sure it’s like a seven attempts seven attempt excuse me slower slower release maybe but I I he wasn’t necessarily shooting like standing still uncontested threes either like a lot of the ones from his tapate that I saw were step back threes off the dribble coming off of screens and not even with his toes at the three-point line like several feet behind the arc um and just draining these shots looked comfortable taking them he looked confident taking them his jump shots not broken maybe just a little bit slow but I don’t necessarily think that that’s going to be a weakness coming into the NBA well and we just read what gavone said about the combine apparently in the scrimmages he was pulling up from 30 feet with these and knocking them down just like he was all season like you were referring to these weren’t just shots you know at the three-point line they were even a couple feet back um so it seems like that’s translated to the combine Ethan I’ll just give you I got a ton of notes I do into a ton of this um first of all I’ll just read off his stats for everybody 19.7 points 8.7 rebounds 3.6 assists so that kind of ties into some of the stuff you were touching on but like here was my thought here if he’s gonna have less assists I like that he’s almost averaging nine boards to make up for it you know what I’m saying 100% basically two steals a game at 1.8 exactly one block a game so two steals in a block a game for a point guard you love to see that 46% overall from the field 37.7% from three on 6.8 threes per game that’s why I said seven earlier that’s the thing that really impressed me and there’s some other stuff that I’m gonna pull up Ethan he was not the best shooter in the first two years of his career this year he took the most shots of his entire career and also had the best percentage of his career and the other thing is is people might be like oh well it’s sub 40% first of all it’s 30 so it’s pretty close to 40% and you’re taking seven threes a game that was the thing that stood out to me he has this percentage on seven threes a game so I I that really gives me confidence in his shooting but the one thing I will say and I’ll get into this in my notes he does have a funky looking jumper for sure I don’t disagree with that at all you could say the release is a little slow but I don’t really care when it’s going in at that rate that’s just my personal opinion um at the combine he measured at six 2.25 without shoes which means he’s going to be 63 with shoes on he was 193 and a 68.75 wingspan that’s a 69ine wingspan like you said um and that shows up on tape defensively with him jumping passing Lanes also just having active hands and having them extended you know so when there’s bounce passes towards a Defender say somebody’s cutting towards the rim and you know he’s trailing he’s got his hands active you know and as long as they can be and he got a lot of steals off that you know um at least one of the two steals he got for game was probably due to his wingspan so the fact that he uses that and has all of the fundamental and and super high IQ you mentioned that that’s why I mentioned his dad as much as his dad wasn’t you know the craziest NBA player of all time I believe he was the whack Player of the Year in the 90s was a good college player and then on top of that when you grow up the son of an NBA player who is also an NBA coach because he worked his way up to being an assistant with the Miami Heat after he worked in the G league with the Spurs there’s just a lot of benefits that you get from that not just the NBA lessons his dad can teach him but then all of the things he’s picking up coaching wise you know he can pour into his son so the fundamentals jumped off the screen and you know that just correlated with his dad’s history in my mind while I was watching it he is 22 years old that’s really the main negative I would have for this but still he’s a true Junior it’s not like he’s a senior coming out of college either had a 42in Max vertical and a 35 in standing vertical vertical a ton of athleticism those are just the numbers Ethan I’m not even done yet I’m just going to try to get through all of my notes as fast as possible because I got a ton of bullet points here can finish through contact uses his shoulders at The Rim good strength for his frame can finish over multiple Defenders deep shooting range can shoot off the dribble or off the ball in most motion or in catch and shoot situations I know you said you didn’t see those as much but I did see that a good bit when I don’t to like 40 or so minutes watching him still I would say though you know I noticed that I started that off with can shoot off the dribble or off the ball in motion those are the two things that I saw the most of but I did see some catch and shoot as well um he utilized his punt fake a lot you know whether he was shooting or driving to the rim showed flashes multiple flashes of coast to coast ability and transition against multiple different teams and I’m going to stop myself here Ethan because there’s another thing I totally forgot to mention about him he played in the Big East this year and was the Big East player of the year the Big East is the home of Marquette Yukon Villanova Georgetown Satan Hall kraton you know all of these this this is like a power five for basketball you know in football in college they call it the power five it’s a little bit different in basketball um and the Big East is one of those conferences that like Villanova and Yukon how many national championships have they won over the past 10 years um you know but both have I know at least four between the two of them so this is a very you know Stout conference that he’s playing in as well wanted to mention that but highlight real dunks including catching lobs as well as throwing them the explosive athleticism that he displayed at the combine and measured well you see that on the tape lots of fundamentals in his game obviously the son of an NBA player his release does look a little funky but it goes in he could be a one-man offense at times for Providence he was very effective out of the pick and roll he used the backboard smartly I saw a lot of that in like post turnarounds and fadeaways kind of similar to Anthony Edwards and I’m I know that’s a very out there comparison but I’m just talking specifically Bank shots here and the reason I bring that up is because in the situations that I saw him use Bank shots Ethan it was where if he would have just shot it straight away it might have got tipped or blocked so he was using it specifically in situations where there might be you know a good contest in front of him where if he tries to shoot it off the bank you know it’s there’s going to be it’s going to be a Freer Lane to shoot the ball if that makes sense um Can contort himself around the Defenders at The Rim going onto his playmaking he can make bounce passes inside dump offs find Shooters on drives a lot um there were a lot of flashes of him passing out of the post as well um as well as through traffic there was one time where he literally got triple teamed against Xavier and was just like okay y’all are gonna triple team me there’s somebody wide open on the wing because you triple teamed me easy three-pointer um I saw a good bit of one-handed passes as well and the other thing I noticed and I forgot I even wrote this down Tony Parker like Baseline drives and dishes and what I mean by that is you know how Tony would always drive under the rim you know what I mean kind of usually from the Baseline sometimes it would be off the wing and he’d just go inside maybe he could go get a layup but he’d dribble out and then find a shooter or something lots of stuff similar to that that I noticed and I was just like I haven’t seen this from very many prospects that I’ve not not any of them really that I’ve watched and and really when we think about going even back to last year Ethan uh I don’t know if there’s a prospect that I’ve really watched that has similar that I that I’ve wrote that down about like the Tony Parker like stuff so that was just you know I love that as a Spurs fan um very aware on and off the ball defensively these are the defensive notes stays in front of guys and stays strong um stance is very fundamental lots of blocks at The Rim can recover if he gets behind because of his wingspan so it’s not just the steals where the wingspan hand uh helps out it’s also if he does get beat a little bit he’s going to be able to Trail and block it off the backboard I saw that a ton of times but still he doesn’t really let anybody get that far in front of him defense is definitely a strength of his um lots of block at The Rim or I just mentioned that blocks a good bit of jump shots as well reads passes well jumps Lanes as he keeps his hands active there’s a reason he basically averaged two steals a game he’s a pest defensively that’s the best way I could describe him uh he can harass ball handlers uh but he’s also good at at not fouling as well not putting his hand in the cookie jar and if he does like it’s going to be in a situation where it’s worth it if you get what I’m saying um he feels very NBA ready um and his experience contribute to that as well Ethan that is my uh complete full note word vomit on Devin Carter I I really do like him a lot um the question though if he’s available at eight do you take him it depends on who else is there but what I will say Ethan is I I think like him better than top pitch he’s up there man I like him a lot I really do I think he would fit and you mentioned how you know you kind of saw him as more of a two you know the assist numbers are a little misleading there I would say because when I watched him like today and everything I read about him like he was their point guard right and maybe their offense you know they had a little bit more free flowing movement to where other guys racked up assists so that kind of you know made up for that you know for his assist numbers not being that high but it’s he was playing PG is what I’m trying to get at I think for me I I would be fine with him at eight if it’s racee at 4 let’s say this scenario happened and Castle’s available today I still take castle if we take castle at four if we take castle at four and we get to eight and it’s Dalton connect Cody Williams Devin I think I still take Cody Williams over him um I’m with you there cuz at that point stefon’s going to be our point guard exactly exactly that that’s where I am personally um if for some reason something crazy happens we get racee at four and then we get to eight and stefon’s gone Reed’s gone hell even Rob dillingham’s gone and there’s just like okay those are our three top point guards and it’s between topic and him I’m with you where I would take him over topic yes for sure I think he’s a highle guy that can help us right away but I think it really will come down to who we take it for um and who’s available at eight yeah and and that ties into every Prospect here I’m going to bring up some other stuff on him here in a second but me says relax the Big East isn’t what it used to be I I get what you’re saying but also yukon’s won the last two national championships so the Big East is the reigning back-to-back National Champion so they’re still pretty good you know like oh like I don’t know what to tell you there man like they’re literally the back-to-back national champions go watch the tape against them he he played pretty well so anyways um let’s talk about some other things with him here Ethan so another thing I didn’t know about him he started his career at South Carolina as well played in 30 games got about 20 minutes a game you know wasn’t the craziest thing in his freshman year if you just look at the numbers but the key thing for me is not only does he have that experience in the Big East but he also has experience in the SEC as well which is another reason why at the end of that uh when I brought up all my notes you know I was talking about how I felt like he was very NBA ready and his experiences contributing to that and if you look at his season prior at Providence what 29% from three you know on almost four attempts a game three and a half attempts per game this season increases it up to seven attempts per game and jumps up to 37% um I mean just a big jump up there for shooting that tells me that he’s someone who can continue to develop and improve um you see the the scoring jump you see the rebounding jump you see the assist jump I mean the only thing that went down is his blocks but that just tells me he’s always been a solid Defender and you could say the turnovers went up but I think that just you know kind of ties into his usage rate being higher um so I wanted to bring up some of his stats here because you can tell that he’s improved every single season um and I think that he could continue to be on that trajectory right I’m completely fine with that um to answer Drew King’s question about what’s a realistic ceiling for Carter I I still think Derek white and Josh Hart is probably his ceiling personally I it sounds like Jude might think he has a little bit more of like higher potential than that um but I think Derek White Josh Hart as a as a glue piece as a guy that just helps you win games and key moments um and be a very very important role player for our team is about where he would be yeah I honestly I think he can be a really solid player um I I don’t know if he’s ever going to necessarily get to All-Star level but that kind of that kind of gets in the next thing that I wanted to bring up here Ethan and let me go ahead and get this up because this kind of ties in to his comparisons and I think it’s going to be somebody that Spurs fans really like and it kind of ties in to what Drew just said here he says I have been missing Derek and I’m sure we all have considering we just watched him hit a very clutch shot in game four to end the Indiana Pacers season unfortunately for them but let’s jump in to the NBA’s draft profile on Devin Carter here so Carter spent his freshman year at South Carolina where he was limited to just seven SS across 30 appearances in the SEC averaging nine points 3.8 rebounds and two assists across 18 minutes per game or 19 minutes per game really the Miami Florida native wanted a more significant role elsewhere and transfer to Providence before his sophomore year Carter started in 33 appearances for the Friars across his two seasons with the program he had his best year a junior in 2023 averaging and 2024 averaging 19.7 points basically 20 points per game nine rebounds 3.6 assists two steals across 35.3 minutes per game all career-high figures except for the steals he also shot 47.3% from the field and 37.7% from Beyond The Arc in his Junior season Carter’s impressive year helped him earn 2023 24 Big East player of the year he was also named the 2023 24 all Big East first team and the 2023 24 all Big East tournament team leading the Big East in points per game in 2023 in 2024 here’s the analysis known for his defensive ability Carter experienced an offensive break out in 2023 24 that translated into an uptick in his draft stock and over the last 12 months has become widely considered one of the best two-way guards in the nation uh he’s a dangerous player in ball screen and spot-up situations meaning he can play on and off the ball his decision-making will ultimately determine whether he makes a career as a point guard or a shooting guard so that kind of as much as I saw him as a PG Ethan that kind of ties into what you were saying earlier his lateral quickness is an asset on both ends of the Court allowing him to get off screens with relative Eve ease while also help being helpful to defend in the perimeter even though his scoring ability is proven at the NBA level he lacks a consistent mid-range game most of his offensive Arsenal lies between attacking the rim and shooting threes I will agree with that I I I mainly did see kind of attacking the rim and shooting threes but that’s also kind of the nature of where the NBA is going as well he looks the part of a two-way asset and a three and D player with the potential to become even more if his offensive game continues develop as it has over the last two years and that’s where I think maybe his ceiling could be a little bit higher because of what he’s shown over his college career and how he’s continued to improve here’s the projection which I really like given his shooting numbers explosiveness on defense and ability to spark the team out of nowhere he has drawn comparisons to Derek white it wouldn’t be surprising if his career follows a similar trajectory starting as a defensive-minded guard and working his way to becoming an elite two-way player who can play for almost any team in the league Carter has the advantage of his size allowing him to play a combo guard efficiently in both roles so when I saw that Ethan I definitely saw the parallels by far to Derek um and on top of that I I just I really feel like he is a player that could kind of fit with any team because of his shooting ability yes there are some playmaking you could say there’s some playmaking strides you know that can really see if he’s a true point guard what are the Spurs good at developing I think that’s something that they could definitely develop with him um but at the same time if we’re there at eight you know it depends on who’s going to be there as much as I really liked his tape and he jumped a couple guys for me honestly on the point guard’s list specifically um but at the same time like he said if we pick castle at four I’m I’m probably not even gonna consider him at eight you know likewise likewise and I the more we think I think about doubling up on guards the less I like it I know like I started it off by by saying that but to your point like if we were to take him at eight after getting castle at four what does that do to Blake Wesley um because I really like Blake Wesley I still believe in Blake Wesley and Blake Wesley’s number one strength is his defense same with Devin Carter um so could they coexist together probably not so there there is that element to think about as well yeah I I think a lot has to play out in the draft a certain way to get to where we’re drafting Devin Carter at 8 but according to gavone we we have significant interest in him we have the connection with his dad um and and with the way that he’s improved over his career I think there is a lot of upside potential there and I think his athleticism his shooting ability um the shades of playmaking that I saw um and also just the effort that he has overall um and of course his defensive versatility as well and and all of the skills that he has there also um make him a very appealing and intriguing Prospect today but once again it it it depends on how it all plays out like at first to consider Devin Carter we’re gonna have to draft a wing at four and that’s probably unlikely to to begin with but if that does happen then it’s like okay well do you want him over a you know a a Stefon castle if Stef were to fall all that you know that far I don’t think that that’s going to happen but even then you might have a conversation about Rob Dillingham or nia topic as well um Jared McCain is another name that we haven’t talked about a lot also but that could be another potential name that maybe you’d have to weigh and consider there um so a lot has to happen to get to that point um but if it falls that way not to repeat oursel with all these prospects Ethan but if it falls that way I’m not going to be mad I feel like that’s how we’ve said what we’ve said about most of the prospects at point guard or the wing throughout this process but once again the Spurs have not had two top 10 picks is this the first time ever I have no idea it feels like it at least in our existence for sure it’s at least in the past like three decades so um yeah we’re just hoping that the Spurs depending on how it plays out address both of those needs that we need so desperately I think the having the two picks in the top 10 allows us the ease to say that about every single draft prospect you we like I you know what I’ll be fine with whatever because we do have two shot two bites at the Apple if you will in this draft which makes everything a lot less stressful and there’s also an abundance of pro like positionally there’s an abundance of prospects in the lottery at both of those two positions

Don't forget the great PG God Shammgod
When quizzed about the time frame in which fans can expect the Spurs to be in the championship conversation again, Ginobili provided a cautiously optimistic outlook.
āItās challenging to pinpoint exactly,ā Ginobili stated, referencing the teamās prospects. āHowever, weāre hopeful and confident that with Victor (Wembanyama) coming in and our position in this upcoming draft, securing two top tens, weāre looking at a two-to-three-year timeline to be significantly competitive. Iām not saying weāll be the outright favorites, but expect us to be in the playoffs and performing strongly.ā
Why do you prefer him over topic?
This is the guy that intrigues me most. I think he's going to be a heck of a player.
