Is an injury to Nikola Topic the gift the Jazz should grab in the NBA Draft
as an is an injury a gift for the Utah Jazz next un locked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day how are you I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz jazznba Insider this is locked on Jazz it’s your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz all right today is an knee injury to nicoa topage a gift for the Utah Jazz that answers all of their draft needs is the top three set in the NBA draft and similar to last year can the Jazz move up to as high as four in the NBA draft and if so is there an answer there they should go get Boston and Dallas are set and we’ll finally play in three days so we’ll take the first initial look at that matchup it’s all coming up on today’s edition of locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz giving you Insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully making it way better to be a jazz fan each and every day thank you so much for being an everyday and being here each and every Button always liked I would love to see if we could get to a 100 likes well let’s start with this do you like nicolea topic if you do hit the thumbs up button on YouTube all right let’s get to who this guy is so this is an interesting case but let me give you the front side of my case here if we really wanted to develop almost every rookie in the NBA correctly I think we’d reg them I really do when you look over the years and there have not been a ton Blake Griffin Nick Collison Chad holgren but there have been others who do not play their first year Nick Collison was a 12th pick of a draft out of Kansas and he had shoulder surgery on both shoulders when you look at NBA players that end up sitting out their first year it’s fabulous for their careers there’s no chance any NBA team could do it cuz fan bases wouldn’t allow it nobody would want it and you’re drafting a player and there’s all the hype but the fact is if you look at Nick Collison came out of college I mean every reason why this one shouldn’t have worked he’s old he had played I think three if not four years at Kansas he was TW four years at Kansas he was he came out and he lost his entire rookie year at 23 years old and then at 24 stepped right in played 17 minutes a night and was good Chad hren last year good the fact is if you look through the wind share on rookies over the years in their first season of the NBA almost none of them are positive win chair players I don’t know that I think you know Keon Georgio could find an individual game where he probably helped us win by getting hot but but frankly Keon last year I’ll bet would have been better off not playing a minute just getting stronger just learning the game and starting this year we can’t do it it can never happen I get it it sounds ludicrous the DAT is overwhelming Blake Griffin sat out his whole entire first year and then went scored 23 points 12 rebounds and four assists Ben Simmons set out his entire first year and then won Rookie of the Year the next year when everyone want to claim he’s not a rookie it’s fine to claim he’s not a rookie but the fact is that the sitting out of a year helps these guys and it helped the number one picks and number two picks like a Blake Griffin and a Chad hren and a Ben Simmons and it’s helped the 12th picks like Nick Collison and it’s helped others along the way so the idea that you could possibly I’m not saying that topich would have to do this but he’s had two knee injuries the the story is if you don’t have it which there’s no reason you should nicoa topic who’s a the one of the youngest players in this draft out of Serbia is a 6 foot6 guard plays point guard with a 7-1 Wings Spin and he’s been he’s injured his knee twice now in the last year at he is the for the entire process he has been the number one point guard in this draft at one point he was walking toward possibly being the number one player in this draft and now there’s a real chance that he’ll go to 10 and in fact in the last ESPN mock draft he is at 10 and the impact I don’t know this but just reading between the lines we’ll see what participation he does in the camp coming up here in Italy but the fact is he’s had two knee injuries and they there’s a there is a chance he originally sprained his left knee at the beginning of the year and then he just hurt another got hurt a second time here just recently um and so the question is is there something serious there is now the the word is that it doesn’t require surgery it’s not a major injury let’s see but let’s say that it is enough that he’s not quite ready to play Team step aside from him it could be the gift for the Utah jazzz that they need and if the negative side of this is the fact that he might not be able to play much of his first year I don’t care that’s my point I don’t care if he has to miss time it might be great for him so here’s who he is he’s a 66 guard with early reports of a seven foot wingspan he plays point guard in the Adriatic League he leads the league in assists in his second in points at 18 years old he was the u8 feba MVP last year I love that that’s so he was the best under 18y old player in Europe he’s out of Serbia um his dad was on the 96 Yugoslavian silver medalist team so he comes from a basketball family his dad was on the 98 Gold Medal Yugoslavia team uh he is a pretty good passer um it’s hard the Adriatic League’s not very good when you watch him there’s not a lot of athleticism it’s a little hard to tell on some things like he’s not an Above the Rim flyer and you can start to visualize well how here he understands how to play on the floor he’ll be able to do that here as well and then you start to think gosh but if everyone’s three inches taller and everyone’s a step faster than does that angle exist as of right now in the Adriatic lead at 18 years old he’s pretty strong he’s got a good Serbian that kind of big body I was just there frankly everyone’s so tall and so big um so he’s very strong he’s not lanky um at all like if you look at the top the uh rash I practiced all night now I can’t say it rashai ah I can’t do it I thought I had it um the who might be the first pick of the draft um out he’s super skinny still this uh topage is not super skinny his body looks much more solid when you watch him on film um he is not a great shooter yet is off the bound shooting he’s about 30% his three-point shooting was I think at 34% this year which is not ideal and a little concerning but his free throw shooting is at 86% and so I actually am here to say this if they were to tell me tomorrow that because of his knee issue that he had on May 13th was his last injury to his right knee in the in the finals game against Belgrade that that was going to shut him down for the year I actually be fine there’s the things he needs to work on in his game he probably is going to have to be better defensively at 66 with a seven on Wing spinning covered up he’s going to have to shoot better okay well let’s work on the shot let’s figure out if there’s some fundamentals let’s just take the time on that and get your body and your mind right and let’s give you a soft frankly we’re we’re not winning an NBA title next year so if we wait a year before we see him maybe not the worst thing ever it’s an interesting play here um he’s and he’s only 18 years old um and frankly players from this part of the world the former Yugoslavia have been very successful in the NBA he reminded me watching him of a right-handed Gordon drage um and Gordon drage was only 6’4 so he kind of but that’s what he kind of reminded me of is a right-handed Goran drage um so he’s an interesting interesting player who I think was probably heading toward being a top five pick who in the latest mock draft is now sitting at 10 for the Utah Jazz by ESPN I think you grab it regardless of the injury or not um that’s at least my thought but the other thing I think is that the top three is likely set and unattainable but everybody else is attainable and we’ll talk about that as we’re just getting started here on today’s edition of locked on Jazz Today’s Show is brought you by Murdoch Chevy news streaming 247 on YouTube or on Amazon Fire TV part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day probably have to have the Yankees after they swept my Giants on that show today all right um it is beginning to feel to me rashar is that right no that’s not right dang it dang it I literally worked on watching his game all night last night and knew I was going to be able to get his um name right and now I can’t I’m gonna have to get it right by the time we do an NBA draft show on Jazz plus though I’ll tell you that why can’t um the uh reaer risher ah Risha Zachary uh all right it feels as though the top three might be getting set now we’ll see Kevin oconor is pretty good at the ringer he hasn’t done a mock draft in a month Jonathan giovon did his last mock draft as I begin to talk to people around the NBA it’s beginning to feel as though the draft is beginning to get set a little bit number one is either rishar rashai Zachary out of France Alex SAR and then Reed they’re going one two it feels like and Reed Shepard seems to be three what’s the wild card here a little bit in the draft right now to me is Donovan kinging because the Spurs probably don’t need him at four the Pistons have Duran at five the Hornets have Mark Williams at six if he doesn’t go top three he ends up slipping down to seven to Portland probably which is interesting because he’s a pretty good player and Houston who just traded for Stephen Adams and has Alfred shenon I don’t really see them doing it and as I said it feels as though we have the first two fairly well set so if you go back to last last year’s draft from the Jazz standpoint everything I understand about last year’s draft is that the Jazz probably could have gotten to five that with the assets that jazz have with what was available on the board the Jazz probably could have traded to get to the fifth pick of the draft from the ninth pick that just if you want to think about that that is a sewer Thompson Anthony black belil kulab Bali jice Walker and Taylor Hendricks probably drafting Taylor Hendricks nine is still the best player in that group um we’ll see whether Anthony black can really develop a shot or not we’ll see whether Aur Thompson can develop a shot we’ll see whether jice Walker only played 340 minutes last year and kabali was really good that might turn out but anyway the fact is that Taylor Hendricks is right in that group and you probably didn’t need to use draft Capital to get to it feels to me as though this year the Jazz could probably get to four and maybe three if they thought Reed Shepard was that special M maybe now Reed Shepard’s pretty interesting to me as I’ve said numerous times on the show his numerics are unbelievable his hands are actually the more I watched him this weekend what jumped out to me a little bit was how active his hands are and how often his hands are on the ball defensively um he defensively is gonna have a hard time he’s really small at 6’2 and he gets beat and he’s gonna get he’s gonna get pulled up to the front um kind of trying to figure out who he look he’s strong he moves a little bit frankly like I know this is like blasphemy I’m not saying he’s just play he actually moves a little bit like Stockton that’s not who he is but the way he navigates in and around people defensively with his hands and doing stuff like that reminded me of that don’t go get don’t go take it the next step um and I’m old enough to actually watch John um he’s not that kind of passer I I was incredibly impressed with Shephard’s strength of his Outlet passing pure physical strength on those passes and willingness to do it um and I thought it competitive was pretty good I I’m pretty sold on him if he’s a three I don’t know why Houston other than I don’t know what we have on a roster that Houston would want and I don’t know why Houston wants more picks um but they might uh so the question I have I and Houston probably doesn’t think they’re getting a lot of top three picks anymore after this so this is probably their last shot I think it would be hard to get to three is what I’m telling you it just doesn’t if you think about where Houston is they’re getting better they got lucky in the lottery I I’d be surprised if Houston traded the third pick I don’t think they have another chance to bring in young inexpensive good talent like this um so my feeling is that the top three players might be set and then if you’re the Jazz you could probably get as high as four similar to last year you could get as high as five if you want to according to ESPN that’s and this is the group it’s Stephen Castle matis bazus Rob Dillingham Donovan kingan Saloon out of France who I’ve not watched at all yet I need to Dalton connect nicoa toic and then Ron Holland Devin Carter Kobe Walter Cody Williams and Jared McCain are probably all on the board at the round there anyway to me there might not be a huge difference in this draft between four and 15 maybe even 16 if Zach Ed’s in there and you just decide that Zack Ed is going to be able to give you 15 minutes a night and that’s at that’s good by the way we’ve done this a hundred times hopefully you’ve learned by now it’s an every day or if you get 16 minutes a night out of the 16th pick of the draft that’s a good pick that’s a rotation player in the NBA but but it’s interesting I do think the Jazz when we’re looking at the draft board and you’re looking at who you want to draft I think you can start looking at four like if you’re a stefen castle guy and really believe that Stephen Castle is going to learn how to shoot and be a Marcus smarts defensive player and be that kind of Beast you should go get him and I think the Jazz would be able to if you believe that Rob Dillingham despite being 6 foot one and 170 pound soaking wet is so special that you should go get him I think Donovan kingan if you believe he is a center that’s an answer that gives you 48 minutes of big guys in this league you should go get him I think that they um will be able to see this the pre-draft camp in traviso Italy is going to be a big deal because that’s going to be the Medicals and how topich gets talks to people the where he start show and it’s also where the French kid Salon Salon will be seen he hasn’t turned 19 either he he’s a youngster so those two guys are are interesting for from all standpoints there this is getting to be pretty fascinating because of just kind of the different Age games you’re playing here like Ron Holland can’t shoot didn’t shoot at g-league ignite he looks exactly like Harrison Barnes he like absolutely looks the part he’s 18. 8 years old like it’s pretty great on the other end Dalton connect who at 18.8 years old was playing in a junior college somewhere is now 23 and is going to be talked about being drafted Runner and even Devin Carter who I really like is 22 and 18 was transferring out of wherever he was before he went to Providence which I can’t think of maybe South Carolina so it’s interesting and then you got a few of these kids who played as freshman really old and the reason Reon this matters is because you’re trying to comp them against similar ages and similar players like Reed Shepard’s almost 20 years old he’s 19.9 he just played his freshman year he’s old Stephen Castle is kind of similar and then jacobe Walters too jacobe walters’s 19 and and a half so not but a lot of kids go to college you know aren’t quite that’s that’s probably more traditional all these kids are kind of now 19 and a half by this point after their freshman year they go it they go at 18 and a half and they come and or a little older than 18 and they come now 19 all right first look of Boston Dallas as we continue here guaranteed fit is only available to us customers thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day two of our best NBA shows are still alive locked on Mavericks and locked on Celtics so make sure you go grab those and listen to Nick and John all right let’s see what we might learn from the style of play Let’s go back we’ve done some of this before but it’s pretty interesting so as I suspected when the playoffs when the league changed the rules to start the playoffs I thought that those teams that didn’t drive the ball would have a huge advantage and the team that drove the ball the least of any team the Eastern Conference last year was the Boston Celtics at just 40 times per 100 possessions because now that you drive the ball you get a blood it’s a blood bath um because they’re not calling any fouls anymore so therefore uh it Boston was helped by this Dallas is 23rd in the NBA in drives so they don’t drive a lot either now when they do when these two teams do Drive boy are they good Boston’s number one in the NBA and Dallas is number two in the NB three in the NBA so that’s kind of an interesting little thing they’re not heavy Drive teams but they are once they end up with the once they do Drive they’re having great success pick and rolls per 100 possession are these high pick and roll teams well no not particularly uh the Boston Celtics are 18th in the NBA in pick and rolls Dallas is 15th in the NBA and pick and rolls they are not two of the highest pick and roll teams however Boston is the best in the NBA at the pick and roll when they run pick and roll Dallas is not interestingly enough they’re at 1.01 Luca obviously ran I believe the most pick and rolls of anyone all season long um Jaylen Brunson if you include the playoffs ran more let me see take the playoffs out of here because that just has to do with uh Jaylen Brunson ran more picks than Luca this year Luca ran the second most amount of picks of anyone in the NBA Boston is much more kind of galarian with their pick and roll and I do not believe they had any individual player that was in the top 30 or even Jason Tatum I think if I remember correctly was 39th in most amount of pick and rolls the best pick and roll if we set some standard here of the top 90 pick and roll players three for each of the top three teams is the way I usually do that so um the number one pick and role player in the NBA in efficiency Jason Tatum is four Luca is 11th overall in the NBA Paul George was the best there Tyrese halberton and then crazily Jaylen uh Williams in his second year which is just totally unheard of Derek white is the sixth best pick and roll player so neither of these teams were overly heavy on pick and rolls let’s see are they big handoff teams the Denver Denver and San ant and Sacramento last year were huge handoff teams um are they big handoff teams in the answer is no Boston runs the fewest handoffs of anyone in the NBA and the Mavericks run are 26 so neither of these teams run much handoff which was the invogue thing a year ago which is really interesting now let’s go to the isolation game which everyone hates but is this something well Boston Dallas runs the second most isolation and Boston runs the fourth most isolation in the regular season in the NBA like at some point it just gets down to my guy better than your guy and the number one team in the NBA in isolation is Dallas and the number four team in the league and is five team in the NBA in isolation is Boston so I we hate to admit it but here we get that just having some guys at isolation can just beat you off the bounce is really good Indiana was not a high isolation team and they survived in the playoffs um but they were also the second best when they did isolate they picked their spots and went um at it and if you kind of look at the teams that aren’t very good isolation teams they aren’t very good offensive teams and they aren’t very good teams it’s it’s kind of a truth serum there you just got to have guys who can beat people and it’s an interesting Concept in this draft as you try to project like well who’s actually going to be able to put the ball on the deck and beat someone there are not a ton of players off ball screen so we ran a lot of off ball screens the last few years in fact the Warriors have been the lead off ball screen team and we have been the second most off ball screen team it’s how we get Lowry the ball it’s how we do a bunch of things these two teams Dallas is 23rd in the NBA and off ball screens and Boston is 26th in the league and off ball screens so the these are not heavy off ball screens again when they do it they’re great at it when Boston brings Tatum or brown off a pin down they’re the best in the NBA Dallas on the other hand is not as good at it they just are they’re 11th in the NBA they don’t have that Personnel they give the ball to Luca and let him go to work um this one I always is such a bummer um number of passes the Dallas Mavericks are 28th and the Boston Celtics are 26 so as much as we all talk about ball movement and we all talk about how important it is you know what’s way more important than ball movement is having a guy who has the ball who can just beep and beat you that’s the truth having a guy who has the ball who can just beep and beat you is actually more important than doing all this stuff or at least beating you right away and then you don’t have to throw as many passes I know it would have been fun if Indiana could have won they led the league in passes then we could all talk about how important passing is but instead the teams that win are the teams that don’t need to pass because they just can beep and beat you which J of this draft is interesting because like what I’ve seen and this is what’s lacking guys that can just beat you in this draft off the bounce create a problem I mean yeah maybe no one literally maybe no one uh Rashi Zachary Rashi no I watched him this weekend no Alex SAR 71 I don’t expect it Reed Shepard Maybe here’s one thing I do love another thing I loved about Reed Shepard he always made the non-natural he doesn’t always but he always he makes passes one removed that’s always what I’m looking for I talked about this last week does a guy make a pass just to the Natural guy or does he make pass to the open guy or pass one remove which then forces the defense to go into a long rotation Shephard does do that Shephard might be the guy who can beat beat people off the bounce here um but he’s Small Castle Zulus no Dillingham he probably can beat you but he’s 61 haven’t watched the French Kid Connect I don’t think so topic maybe but he’s playing in the Adriatic lead and it’s so hard to tell whether or not he actually has the bounce to get by you he’s doing he’s getting downhill he’s got a really crafty low dribble he’s got a bunch of things that are really good but it’s in the Adriatic League it’s hard in thing is hard Nikola Topic was headed toward being a top 5 pick and maybe even the #1 pick. The U18 FIBA MVP is a 6’6 point guard playing in the Adratic League. However, he has had two knee injuries and now his draft stock is slipping. The latest NBA Mock Draft from ESPN has him going #10 to the Utah Jazz. David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insiders, has some thoughts on why this might be a great gift for the Utah Jazz.
Is the top 3 of the NBA Draft beginning to settle? If so is there someone there the Utah Jazz should try to go get. Last year, the feeling was the Jazz probably could have gotten to 4 in the draft with their assests it seems this year they might be able to get to 3, but is there really any difference between 4 and 15 in this draft that makes a trade worth it.
The first and quick look at the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics.

The next Raul Lopez great
ESPN has us taking Nicola Topic. You have to love players named Nicola! I like a lot of things about him such as size for a point guard, pick and roll, finishing ability. The analytics look good and he showed efficient 3 point shooting after coming back from injury only to get injured again. There are about 20 players in the draft that I would love to have. I would love to trade up from 29 to early 20s to get Ware, Missi, or another player with upside as well.
He the only one I raise my eyes. Hope Jazz get him. The notion this is a bad draft is just lazy. Hope Jazz grab international player like him.
collison and simmons are a example of your argument?–and holmgren gave orlando the cold shoulder in pre draft interviews–now playin pseudo gangster in okc—we will see how his career pans out—-seattle sonic karma—and go danny vranes–a croat-(along with george mikan)-and ex sonic–along with collison and durant
On Reed Sheppard – "almost 20 – he's old". ššš
Look, the difference between barely 18 and almost 20 is so small. 22 vs 18? That's substantial.
