Pacers 2024 NBA Draft preview: How good is the draft class? 2nd round talent? Trade value to be had?

it is June 3rd which is by far the latest we’ve ever started talking about the draft here on lockdown Pacers but it’s time their Conference Finals run is over they have three second rounders what are they going to be thinking about how good is this draft actually around where the Pacers pick we’ll dive into all that and more on today’s lock on Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up everybody happy Monday hope you had a great weekend and welcome into another edition of the lock on Pacers podcast where we of course talk about draft prospects not the Indiana Pacers as always my name is Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and SII and today one of my favorite people covering the draft is back to help me make sense of what the heck is going on here everybody says it’s a bad draft does that mean the whole draft does that mean that top of the draft what should the Pacers be targeting what positions are good what positions are bad what’s going to happen at the 36 pick if the Pacers actually make it he’s been to the Portsmouth Invitational and the draft combine and every other thing in between that’s where we met for the first time at the draft combine last year it’s Richard staman from NBA Big Board locked on NBA Big Board excuse me and covering the draft other places uh first guy who got me on Desmond Bane first guy who got me on GG Jackson he’s here to help get me on somebody else for the Pacers draft this year I hope that was a good enough intro man how you you doing man I need I need to move to Indiana so I can have you around everywhere I go any person I meet I got to have you around you’re the perfect hype man is there anyone else you you got me on I can’t remember I know Bane for sure I remember GG Jackson last year I can’t remember anyone else and then i r g Jackson The Lottery and everybody thought I was crazy and I feel good about that we both liked uh the kid from LSU Darius days we love Darius days got him more than me so I can’t take credit for that one I was just stoked after he went back to school so many times he ended up making NBA at all but he got that twoway baby the Rockets bailed me out I knew he was NBA good uh okay so this is a weird one right the last three drafts I’ve started talking about in March because the Pacers had a lottery pick in all of those and this year not only I have a lottery pick they don’t have a first- round pick at all the last time they didn’t have a first- round pick was 2020 they picked cash Stanley at pick 50 they do have better picks this year they have 36 and I don’t I don’t want to say that history means they’ll do it again but the last two times they’ve had a pick at the top of the second round they traded 31 and some other stuff to get Isaiah Jackson and then following year they picked Andrew neard so they love the top of the second round this is a little farther back but uh so we’re gonna dive into that pick if the Pacers even make it and the backend is of the second round but I want to start with this this is the Trope used a lot and usually I have a good feel for this because I actually care about this stuff but this year I haven’t at all everybody says this is a bad draft comparatively and a lot of times at least in the past that means the top of the draft isn’t as good but the rest is of similar quality and like you might be able to snipe a role player at some random spot like in every other year or you get a star at whatever where Rudy goar goes or rannis goes whatever is this a bad draft top to bottom is this a bad draft if you have a really good pick what is your assessment of the quality of this draft yeah just overall I think it’s not the draft you want you’re not GNA find a Cornerstone in this draft in plain sight like last year you will there were three guys at the top really even four to five that a lot of teams were sold on like this is the guy this year there’s nobody at least that is presenting themselves as that now it’s important to remember every single draft impr like produces a an All-Star player so that is really important to remember because it’s gonna happen whether it’s somebody who comes out of like the 33rd pick like Jaylen Brunson was uh or I think might have been 34th whatever he was that range where the Pacers happen to be picking and also just fun fact really not of a difference between 20 and 30 and 30 and 40 in a lot of years but overall this is just not a star heavy class but that doesn’t mean that it’s bad at dep because I I just I feel like the way basketball is right now like think about how much better Europe is than even 15 10 years ago and how much better like the average freshman is in college compared to 10 to 15 years ago like they are and as a whole I think getting a lot better and because of that not everybody can be there and they’re dropping down a littleit bit more and more years in college so the Juniors and seniors that were good four years ago now it’s their time yeah I wondered this is a theory and not related to covering the Pacers draft at all but I wondered how much of people’s opinions of this draft like a lot of people cover the draft or worldwide but like four of the top five or five of the top seven are international or played ignite so like people don’t watch them that much right like are they actually not that good or did they not play college basketball but I actually I do think that there is Merit to both this year yeah I mean I think I mean look the ignite won two games this year nobody’s gonna give that team the benefit of the doubt program’s gone it was that bad exactly and the the important thing is though it doesn’t mean every player on that team is GNA have a bad career now are some of them a little bit overhyped absolutely does it also downplay some of the player strengths and you know kind of expose some of their weaknesses 100% they had no point guard really didn’t have I mean the point guard really just set everyone up for fa your guys like ethon almana who he’s the big from Spain he needed a point guard he’s the most decorated International Youth Tournament player in the last five years almost ever I think he’s the only player to win two MVPs in FBA before 18 and that is like that’s insane but he looked horrible in the G League because his play style was completely different he didn’t have a point guard so different guys get hurt differently this is the kind of insight that I need like I I did that was he at all-star weekend or something I’ve seen him play somewhere before and I thought he he might have been on that g-league team let me yeah I’m look that good but I thought he was good and I was talking to someone else and I had like look up who he even was so there you go more cred to your point all right let’s get into the meat and potatoes here for the Pacers specifically because last year you and I debated like I forget what player I had you on for but I talked to you a lot about all of the top 10 guys at some various Point throughout the pre-draft process this year I mean there’s there’s no point I mean in theory I wanted to really just make my listeners feel great we could talk about Ed and we the the local kids but that also they’re not going to be there at 36 right so what what you kind of you just kind of alluded to it with your you know not a huge separation between 20 and 30 and 30 and 40 but what do you think of this draft in the range the Pacers best pick is is it is that excuse me is that comparable to a normal year is their actual talent to find there who do you like what do you think of the let’s say 25 to 40 range this year yeah so let me I’m pulling up my big board my last first round grade I had 25 this year and a normal year I usually have 30 to 35 so that that speaks volumes to this draft I I think right now my 26 to 50 is all one tier so the second round is interchangeable so that to me that just screams okay you can pick a few guys because I have guys that are way off the consensus at the end of my first round I have like Jaylen Bridges up there and his range is consistently mocked in the 30 I do think ultimately he goes late first but he is somebody for example that could be in there I think that range is good though and you’re going to find like every year some guys have a second round grade like Tai Jerome in 2019 is a prime example a lot of teams didn’t want him didn’t think he would be drafted like they didn’t have a draftable grade but also the Suns took him in the lot or sorry at the end of the first round that’s kind of the beauty of the draft is one team’s board may not even have a player on it another team has it like well we had him a first round grade why is he still available yeah It’s Tricky with a draft like this to and the range is that wide like for someone like us or at least me specifically to grade it right after the draft like was this a good pick I don’t know like it could have been something like this where one team had him 60th and another team had him 20th and clearly the Pacers if they pick somebody would be the highest of that group and that’s what that’s what makes it so tricky and yet in the top of the second round I think you can just go so many directions that as fascinating and something I wonder about that is you know I don’t even know if you have a sense of this yet but like if that tier is so wide among NBA teams is it going to be hard to like move from 36 to 30 or even back from 36 to 45 because teams won’t see a lot of value in moving like that well I think this is every team wants to sell their pick like I mean that’s why how many teams it’s like two to three teams are trying to move up from the end of the lottery to the top of the draft and there teams that have multiple picks don’t want those multiple picks like everybody wants in one of the next two drafts like just for headlining it there’s more than just these guys but you have generational players next year Ace Bailey Cooper flag common malok like those are three of the top dogs Dylan Harper then the year after that you have the boozers primarily cam Boozer and then AJ deona two of the top three players currently in high school including the guys from this upcoming class so teams don’t want this pick they want to see what they can get down the road keep tabling that pick from happening because of that I actually do think going from 36 to 30 this is a year you’re going to see I I always think it’s 2015 the Orlando Magic sold the 25th pick and just outright like and and that happens often in first round picks because it’s guaranteed money that you’re giving up that you can probably just get him 10 picks later if you wanted to buy back in with that same money but also just like they don’t need it like they they don’t see another guy helping from this class yeah I think the Kevin Porter Jr pick when the Cavs traded to 30 they did cash in a couple seconds or something to get into the late first round that year too like it’s been done before the only reason I wondered that specifically for the Pacers is if their next trade because they gave up three first for yakum is going to be young players for good player having another late first even if it’s not like a high upside player does have contractual value to them but that’s not related to the quality of the class okay let’s talk about position groups certain players that are commonly mocked or at least popular in this let’s say 25 to 40 range but Richard before we get into that talk about LinkedIn jobs because when you’re hiring for your small business you want to find quality professionals that are right for the role and that is linkedin.com lockdown MBA that’s linkedin.com lockin NBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply back here on lockdown Pacers thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day after your fun weekend make your second listen lockdown NBA Big Board because if you like what Richard said so far you can hear it every single day and learn about prospects that the Pacers have no chance of getting like Zack Ed and Kell alware and many other players of local interest or the best guys in the draft after an insane Lottery have I told you my my tanon spin story this year rich I don’t think I have didn’t have to do them this year right Pacers aren’t in the lottery they’re in the playoffs so they’re playing a playoff game the night of the lottery a home game and I like right before it’s on this TV in the meteor room I said I’ll do one spin this year the Hawks jumped up in my spin so I was all over it this year I was right and now I have the god touch so next year I have to keep that in mind when I do my spin I did it you’re welcome Atlanta Hawks they need to hire me okay what is there a position group uh that stands out in this Pacers range or even in this draft in general that is particularly deep in terms of wings guards bigs anything like that wings and forwards man they’re they’re all right yeah I got I mean I could count up let’s see in the second round I got I mean I already see 10 just before my 45th ranked player so yeah after 20 so 26 to 45 I mean half of those are wings or forwards so it’s it’s a pretty good range and mind you and also this doesn’t mean that the mock is going to fall as way it’s just my personal rankings and it’s important to say that because everything we said in that first segment too the mocks don’t have a good idea after a certain point like there’s a few picks that you might get into with oh this guy got a promise he’s going here like that might be right every once in a while but when they’re like this could be a good fit because they need defense that’s probably not enough of a reason for it so be skeptical of these mocks like just because one person has it doesn’t mean that’s the way it’s going to be now granted I’m on tangon which is just I think it’s just a comp it ranking right of like a bunch of mock drafts but every player they have 26 through it looks like 42 only one of them is not between 65 and 610 right like there’s just apparently a lot of wingy forwardyoutube they need a big they they need another point guard they don’t need any specific thing and you shouldn’t be drafting for need that much anyway but it’s kind of harder like in the past it was very obvious they shouldn’t pick a center then they picked go anyway but still um or like they should be targeting this and then they picked jerus and they did that right this year it’s not as clear if there’s anything specifically they need and so one that that gives me two defaults if on the Pacers one just pick the best guy I I’m Pro doing that anyway but two wings are so valuable skilled size is becoming the thing that if there’s a tiebreaker you’re happy if you’re the Pacers that this is a big forward heavy draft I think yeah I mean it’s it’s a draft where I think too you’re getting somebody who’s gonna play well TP the Pacers are stacked honestly they’re very deep team and on paper with an average team these guys could come in and contribute like that’s the level of a player you’re getting like you’re getting a wing you’re getting a forward somebody using that three four interchangeable that combo forward in a way that’s great news everybody wants those players uh these days what what if you were running the Pacers would you have any specific position you’re targeting I to me I think it’s just best player but I’m curious what you think from an outsider is perspective no I I think maybe you get another stretch big but like everybody wants more stretch bigs so that’s not exactly I I don’t know there’s no like one thing because the also the Pacers are drafted so well that even guys like Isaiah Jackson would be a roadblock because I think he’s very clearly ready for that jump yep like I I feel like he’s kind of a block for if you take a big right like how do you even fit that next guy in yeah it’s gonna be really tricky to see and like maybe they could say oh well if Jaylen Smith Ops out and the tricky part is his option dates after the draft like maybe they need a fourth is Center to like try to string along or something but 36 is weird too because do you know the highest number pick that’s ever been a two-way because that’s too high to be a two-way even so they probably want to roster the guys then you have to actually think about the positions but I don’t think anyone 36 or higher has ever been two way and actually in 2020 Tyler Bay was the 20 36 pick and he was a two-way for okay so it’s not uncommon my head 45 or better you’re getting stand I think it might even be 40 going forward this year actually yeah yeah this year specific I bet that number is lower than it usually is I don’t know so so that makes it tricky too is like the person you pick’s going to want it um but with that with that in mind if they don’t need someone do you think there actually is like because you described this all these teams would want a future pick because these next couple drafts are better do you feel like there is a way that a team would want 36 like could the Pacers move out of it if they’re just like yep we have a lot of depth are other picks are there like or what do you feel like the appetite for that would be yeah I think it depends on the team someone like Washington they have the 51st pick um I need to look at what they have going forward but say they have a lot of their picks and they don’t have a lot of dep uh excuse me debt you know they could be somebody and I’m looking at it they owe three second round picks including this year that’s their entire they have every other second round pick and a ton of incoming picks they could easily offer like multiple seconds to a team as ammo for the rece for like the Pacers right so I I think there’s something there like a team like that that just needs more experimental pieces like that’s at the bottom of a rebuild I think you could entice them you’re probably not getting like I don’t know you’re not getting the Mavs right to buy or something or the Celtics well that’s how they uh they traded the Isiah Todd pick for that Isaiah Jackson because someone wanted Isaiah Todd that worked out great for the Pacers um this is the last kind of like for lack of a better terms structural or interesting unique thing about this draft but this is the first year of the two-day draft and let me tell you first I think everybody wins except for just TV consumers I think it’s good that teams have more time to prep for these picks because guys will in theory land in better situations teams can make more informed decisions right like in my head that’s a win for everyone even though no one’s like dying to watch a second round although bronny being in the first year of it will certainly help the TV product do you think it will change the draft that much or do you think it’ll just make teams make better decisions yeah I I agree with you I think the thing I would say is last year just selfishly well one you know people hate change partially myself included like I I love the second I love the second round when they’re at commercial and they make a pick and then it turns out to be somebody like yic I think was at a they were at a commercial when when he was picked but at the same time last year I went to the draft for the first time and worked it I didn’t leave barklay Center until 245 in the morning so it’s nice that that’s not a thing anymore like and I’m not trying to like think of the media but like at the same time like it it does make everyone I think the people covering it the teams picking the fans that care like I don’t know like I think maybe that if it has an island show as a second round maybe people will care yeah I think it’ll be like interesting if you’re the Pacers you don’t have a first day pick like does that change your first day like do you walk in just to watch do you like how do you you know watch party what is the What is the pick number where if a certain guy’s still there you start calling teams about trades like I think it’ll be interesting to see how it affects front office Dynamics I don’t know why that came out of my mouth so wrong but like how they approach their own way of of picking players or like getting the pick they want and I think there would be value for the Pacers and trying to get into the very late first with as little they could give up as possible but that might be hard to do or not worth it just to get their young player pipeline filled up and I’m guilty of something by the way I have to put a hand up here um I the Pacers traded their picks for SE yakum and I was like ah crappy draft trade away the picks that’s great and then they got a pick for Buddy heel and I was like hey they needed a pick and they got it I can’t say it’s a crappy Draft when they trade away the picks and then think it’s good they got a pick when they get one uh not as good of a draft either way but anyway I think the two-day draft Dynamic will be interesting now I want to hear some names some guys that I should start watching when we hang up on this call but before we get into your fave names in this draft in this range talk about eBay locked on Mavs or locked on Celtics to hear about the competing teams in the finals you heard John on this show before the Conference Finals Nick angad host lockon Mavs you’ve heard here before as well should be a great series coming on Thursday all right I’m just going to say it as vaguely as possible Rich give me a name someone you love someone the Pacers should love if they get him at 36 let’s let’s let’s make let’s have some fun here give number in my second round tier that 26 to to 50 I love fun I’m in 26 to 50 give me a number oh oh from that I’m not going to say 36 get the Pacers pick specifically Let’s Go 39 39 okay uh you chose somebody with a massive Cloud hanging over them teren Shannon I do think he would be there at 36 it does depend on you know for those who don’t know there is a there’s a I think it’s sexual assault or rape trial uh pending I don’t want to speak on it because I don’t know enough but if we’re just talking about the player and he does get cleared he’s a very interesting Prospect um he came from Texas Tech always has had shooting indicators the shots been a little bit theoretical more than practical but he really exploded at Illinois had a strong breakout came the the star one of the stars of The Big 10 I know Tony you watched a lot of him since you’ve seen Coleman Hawkins but really good onall defense not Super Active off ball and doesn’t do a ton off Ball even when he’s on offense he kind of just waits for the ball to come to him rather than going to the ball but a lot of skill that you up for on the wings man how how would to picked Coleman Hawkins like top 20 I just loved him you were there last year the 23 combine he’s in these scrimmages and I would say he was the second best player that I watching those scrimmages and then he just went back to school year same thing yeah he’s awesome and all the I’m like why is this guy not like a clear NBA prospect that he goes back to school you know the best player was in the scrimmages last year Ben Shepard who turns out is a playoff rotation player as aimy and pods he was very good too that’s right man it’s so weird like in my head I’m like this one game shouldn’t matter right like it’s one game and then like the three best guys all turned out great I mean it historically has Jaylen Williams two years ago true ended up lottery pick because of that and it’s it’s different for those who don’t know what ends up happening is they just go here play together you and other people at the combine you have no chemistry will never be with your teammates from college they divide you up like if Terence Shannon had played for example him and Coleman Hawkins would not have been on the same team so you just kind of have to figure it out and for the first time you’re playing in NBA spacing in front of NBA teams with an NBA shot clock and NBA pace and generally those guys that have done well the breakouts like more often than not it’s not a perfect hit rate sometimes you get the random like it was a one-off but at the same time like it means a lot to these teams for the reason I think in general like if you could just hop in with a random assortment of players and show that you’re good at basketball in that setting that does have some value I would say who was good this year I didn’t actually again I I I didn’t go because the Pacers were still playing but like I didn’t even check in on the combine that much yeah I would say AJ Mitchell was somebody who was also in that range by the way that did really well Nicole durich he rose to a first round Prospect like he I think he goes first round at this point he’s from yach’s program right he went to mega mega yeah yeah that they that program runs like Eastern European Prospect was there too I know all about Mega these days yeah Mega’s Mega’s very nice Nicole yovic like they get somebody every single year but yeah he was really good he is in that Pacers range though like if he’s not at first round pick he’s the first five to six picks in the second round and honestly he’s interesting he’ll get coms to like Chandler Parsons I would put money on that because they have the same hair they have the same line drive shot and they’re very similarly built so in reality he’s not similar to Chandler Parsons he just has a line drive shot and he has some playmaking skills but I I think he’s an interesting upside play he was somebody also that last year was at the combine or at least at the pro days went back yeah I’m going to make a new rule for myself I’m going to try to and I do player comps pick up player who shoots with the opposite hand because then it forces me to really think about it instead of just doing a lot of that kind of stuff because that does so naturally happen all the time to everyone yeah no there’s no so you can’t compare like cross-racial cross hands like cross European so bad about you can’t Europeans and Europeans like Americans americ it’s so dumb I I hate play your comps for a reason and I hate comps in general anyway yeah that’s why I like really want to think about like nonsense like that like someone who shoots the other hand maybe that would help me I I got another name by the way for you I dig it so Rick carile I remember this in Dallas he would randomly take his Virginia guys Justin Anderson like there’s somebody else drawing a blank on there’s a Virginia guy there are two in this class honestly I I’d really prefer it to be ree beakman but I don’t think he’s gonna get drafted I would I think it might be Ryan Dunn he is he is the weirdest player he was probably the he’s the best defender not including wanyama since or best like non true Defender since matis thy who I still think is the best defender I’ve scouted that good that being said he is a one through five defensive player on offense he is a six foot seven Center like he is a dunker that is it dunker and cutter he cannot shoot the form doesn’t look terrible but then he the next shot he puts up a whole different shot so it’s hard to go off there’s no shooting upside there I don’t think but if you wanted that athletic undersized big who can guard truly one through five and you have enough shooting elsewhere he might be worth it like there’s always the Virginia ties I really do think he is somebody that the Pacers could be a prime candidate to take in the second round I don’t think anybody wants to give him a guaranteed contract but like he is that good of a defensive player that he’s clearly being almost mocked in the first 20% threep Point shooting on one attempt per game 53.2% from the F line but a very good field goal percentage because this man’s a Duncan machine and his stock number are insane this should be a prospect I love I love kind of dorky dudes like this if he was two inches taller he is first round pick all right can I ask you about one guy in particular that I know I’m gonna end up watching a lot hit me look I I believe in this for no reason other than that it just keeps working Kentucky guys are good Pros is Justin Edwards going to be available at 36 because I have a feeling I’m going to like him he had a bad year I’m aware he had a bad year so he’s interesting he measured he tested portly like his whole stick not shtick his whole thing was like his reputation was and and I saw it was he was a great athlete he was somebody who in high school at peach jam was throwing down monster dungs he didn’t test well at all he tested mediocre at best and I wonder if that does keep teams from giving him as a first round pick because he cannot dribble the shot looks pretty real I think good shooter I’m in see I I know like I everybody loves a lefty I me I I worry I just kind of worry like I don’t know he could end up being another cast of Stanley where he just Flames out has some decent tools but I I’m very torn on him I originally had him in my top five this year and then I watched him I’m like this guy is so far away from an NBA court how you got to shoot me down like that all right I uh two more questions is there any way they get anything other than like a maybe two-way guy at 49 or 50 do they even is there anything I think they make those picks if they do it’s a stash yeah and well I guess with two ways maybe but like maybe they bring back sheway and like they have Mojave King hanging out and qu fine for Kendall Brown Kendall he’s on a standard already but oh right right right I forgot I forgot is don’t know rich is currently wearing a kendle I will I hold on let me let me flip my camera but it’s the old of Pacers uniform that’s a very impressive shirt even Nike logo a very real Jersey all right I have to do my job I’m sorry I’m sorry you know what I’m gonna ask if I’m saying this before bronny thoughts please share them with me he was in West his his LeBron was in Westfield to watch Bryce not very long ago if you don’t know Westfield to town pretty close to Indie give me bronny thoughts yeah so first of all a story nobody cares about him to tell anyways when I saw it I was at the combine I was at the combine and I was sitting watching the scrimmages it was the end of the first game bronnie was in the second game and I’m watching with another person in the media and he goes yo look that’s LeBron and I was like okay like I’m Goble but like he wasn’t here yesterday I’m not going to see him today whatever and like he was so quiet the entire time I thought he was gonna be like Matt Barnes that loud daad the entire time he said one thing anyways all that being said I think I think a lot of it is uh favors being done put in the first round we’ll see he would not be getting this chance if he was I don’t know some six1 guard who went to like a Mountain West school or something even a big 12 school like this team was not good the thing is you have if you have a 20% chance at LeBron that’s probably better than a 30% chance that some other guy hits right 30 to 50% chance like another guy hits and even then his cealing this point might not be that great you might take it it’d be funny to see gobron go to Indiana no offense like that’s not what he’s known for going to places like Indiana and loving it but the bronny thoughts you asked for that that is what I will answer look he is good at doing the simple things there is a real shooting upside and I think he’s a really smart player he’s got long arms he’s athletic there are things there the problem is in today’s NBA him as a guard as a neutral player who doesn’t have arguably the greatest player of all time is his dad there are limitations and a lot of that comes down to his size he’s not a point guard and he’s 61 he’s a good shooter but also he doesn’t play that well through pressure and traffic in a lot of teams if he ever gets rotation minutes everyone’s gonna want to eat his lunch it’s the same thing Lonzo had when he was a rookie everybody wanted to kill him because his dad so I just it’s going to be tough for him he needs honestly he’s it’s same thing as Lonzo like you need to get away from what your dad is doing to you like to build that pressure and be your own person the problem is again though he’s 61 so I I just if he doesn’t hit right away and LeBron retires he’s not in the league the difference is like between those two players specifically is like LeBron’s not doing anything he’s just existing you know he’s just he is LeBron and so his kids are very popular the reason I ask is because like I have a I didn’t watch USC they weren’t the Big 10 yet so somehow there’s going to be an IU USC conference game next year which is so dumb but like between the heart stuff like I just don’t know if his play is actually reflective of who he is which is why I’m asking a lot of people about do they think he’s actually good and you know Rich Paul had the stuff about no no we’re not doing a two-way for bronnie and I I think Trace Jackson Davis and his Success With Golden State’s going to make a lot of people think that’s like a viable path for a lot of people and like rich is obviously a very good Agent but I’ll be very curious what bronnie looks like where he can go if it’s actually smart for him to be selected with draft workouts because I’m ahead I’m like 36 4950 is what the Pacers have like that would be the teams you’d want if you’re a guy mocked at the range he’s usually mocked in but you know I just don’t know and I don’t I don’t want to get too much into him because I don’t again I have not watched him play a single second of basketball at the college level I just I’m very curious what will happen there yeah I think the Lakers or Suns take him anyways I although actually the Suns will trade their pick someone will either be stupid and take him way too high or he’ll fall to the Lakers in the second round I just I stand by that’s what’s going to happen yeah if if what here’s what I think’s going to happen is pick a pick 31 through 45 that the Lakers will trade for that pick and everybody will immediately know what’s happening can we can we just one thing I know we’re pushing time what if what if the the Clippers have like the funniest they have a chance to do the funniest thing ever man like they have the 45th pick I’m just saying you can read the rest like yes that would be extremely what does the the Lakers have a second they don’t do they yep 56 55 55 yeah yeah the Celtics one pick before them that would also be ex yeah there’s a lot of teams that have funny like an opportunity to do something funny oh Lordy all right this is good it’s G to be a super weird year to cover the draft last year I did 14 individual podcast on prospects I probably will do like one show of three guys I end up liking in this process one guy per segment but less draft talk here this year because Pacers are gonna have a very similar team next year year last year and a lot of their Summers down to free agency and they had a great season which is also we’re talking about rich thank you very much for the time I now feel like I know a lot more about this draft working people find you and your work covering this weird draft and all the other drafts that are actually better in the future yeah locked on NBA big board for podcast and then I have a substack mavd draft. substack do.com I do NBA level scouting reports uh film breakdowns Community mock drafts things like that which I have to have you on soon you hear this guys Mavs draft doesn’t even live in Dallas anymore unbelievable no no no no no three weeks three weeks and then I oh until after they win the finals then I’m moving get the hell out of there it’s time everybody tomorrow we’ll be back either with a player season recap episode or a free agency look ahead episode depending on guests and scheduling I’m very behind on that because I’m very behind on that and the fever are playing a lot so uh eventually I’ll get caught up on scheduling and then I can tell you guys what coming but something fun is coming every episode until free agency is over because there’s less time to talk about that stuff because the Pacers made the Conference Finals I’m on Twitter SLX Tony R East Rich is there mavd draft as he already said thank you all for listening have a wonderful day see you very soon

  1. The two players I think the pacers should pursue is Bobi Klintman or Ryan Dunn for that #36 pick if I’m going off of where players are projected in mock drafts but I think it might take a Isaiah Jackson like move where they trade up in the draft to increase their odds for the talent they want I think this draft will test how good are the scouts on finding talent, also I think we should look at 2way potential wing/forwards, another thing about Ryan Dunn he may not be the best shooter right now but we have to remember players like Herb Jones and many other forwards were in the same boat but developed their shooting to be a steal in the draft overall

  2. Bobi Klintman is who I want. After hearing about the Pacers' interest in him last year, I have been paying attention to him and really like him

  3. If I can't get a big SG/SF I like. At 36, D.J. Wagner would be a solid high potential pick. Maybe then you'd take a Jalen Bridges type 2nd and a big.. But I'd love to get one of Klintman, Tyson, Shannon and Edwards. Not asking that much bro.. lol.

  4. Idk about Ryan Dunn.. I mean we could just sign Kessler Edwards on a minimum deal. He has a 113 Defensive Rating. Makes teams better.

  5. I hope we haven't forgotten how badly trading a young backup for an older starter can turn out. see Alex English for George McGinnis. the Leonards were our GM and Donnie Walsh made the trade for Denver.

  6. Hey Tony, my biggest offseason question is regarding the rotation next year. If you include IJax the Pacers have 11 dudes that we probably hope to see play next year. They have an insane amount of wings between Nembhard, Nesmith, Mathurin, Sheppard, and Walker. Is Walker getting minutes at the 4 with Turner at the 5 while Obi gets minutes at the 4/5 with Pascal? My biggest concern in the offseason is less about who they get or what big changes happen, but rather how they will be getting all these guys under 25 years old significant minutes. I want to see Haliburton, Nembhard, Sheppard, Nesmith, Toppin, Mathurin, and Walker all get minutes next year. How does that happen?
