Kyrie Irving reflects on his heated past with Boston and fans before NBA Finals

how would you sum up your time in Boston with the Celtics what do you mean as far as how did that go for you uh it was just a chapter of my life uh you know that I got to enjoy um you know for the most part uh we we had a a great opportunity to um do some special things but it was cut short um just based off personal reasons for on my end and um you know but one thing I look back on my time in Boston I’ve said this over the past few years um you know but some how it gets tossed under the rug but you know the greatest thing I learned from Boston was just being able to uh manage um not only my emotions but just what’s going on a day-to-day basis of being a leader of a team or being one of the leaders and having young guys around you that have their own goals um but you have to learn how to put the big picture first and uh you know leaving those guys JT and JB and you know some of the guys that are still remaining on that team like Al Horford or you know Marcus Smart got traded away we had a a great time to bond a great time to go through some some tough times not just on the court but uh you know I know in due time a lot of that full story will come out and when it’s um appropriate but uh yeah I had great time in Boston just being able to learn and um you know grow as a person T and brown was still young at that time how how have you seen them growing since the time you were uh I mean they’ve they’ve improved tremendously I mean they they’ve made a few All-Star games since I uh ECF uh you know MVPs uh so I’m nothing short of proud of those guys for what they’ve been able to do um left a lot of good wisdom with them try to give as much advice uh you know while I was there and also when I uh went to Brooklyn and uh came to Dallas uh just being able to extend a brotherto brother relationship with them letting know I have their back no matter what um you know this basketball stuff is is going to be competitive no matter what we’re going to go at each other but um you know getting to know them as human beings they they’re really special people alongside other people that I got a chance to know in Boston organization as you said the the full story can wait for another day but can you think an example of something in Boston that made you better leader better person better player just to happen specifically while there uh yeah I just think moving on to the next thing you know that’s yeah just learn how to move on and and let go of the past um it could you if you allow it to um you know because I’ve been bombarded with Boston question since I left and people trying to figure out what actually happened but again I think the full story will come out probably when I’m retired or when it’s appropriate like I said um you know cuz I I didn’t mind uh after a few years taking the brunt of the blame um you know one of the best players in the world so I know what comes with that fair criticism um you know but it’s just a little bit more grace could have been extended my way especially what I was dealing with during that time as a human being I know some sometimes in sports it’s literally about the end goal and result and what you accomplish and that’s one thing but we’re still human at the end of the day and I wasn’t my best self during that time so when I look back on it I just see it as a time where I learned how to let go of things and learned how to talk through my emotions you know I came into the league at 19 years old not knowing how to be a young man as of yet um because this whole lifestyle was thrown at me I was expected to do wondrous things but um I just wanted to continue to develop as a human being and once I put that first then you know you see me flourishing now so you You’ talked a lot about kind of the spiritual uh spiritual journey you’ve been on and you know getting to this point of Happiness protecting your peace there are people in Boston who don’t let go of the past and and you kind of know what’s going to come way in terms of animosity from the fan base how do you approach that how how do you handle that you know going on to this stage uh I think I’m better at consolidating uh kind of the emotions now or um being aware of what it’s going to be like you know we call it animosity we call it hate we call it you know it’s going to be hell in Boston I mean there are real life circumstances going on in the world that are bigger than the basketball uh kind of competitive side of things and answering those questions but I will say um you know last time in Boston I don’t think that was the best uh you not not this regular season but when we played in the playoffs and everyone saw me flip off the birds and kind of lose my a little bit that wasn’t a great reflection of who I am and how I like to compete on a high level um you know it wasn’t a great reflection on my end towards the next Generation on what it means to control your emotions in that type of environment no matter what people are yelling at you um you know I’m built for these moments uh to be able to handle circumstances like that uh and I’ve been able to grow since then so uh of course it’s going to be a hectic environment but I’m looking forward to it and I see it as a a healthy relationship to have with the fans you know I almost think about Gladiator just wi the crowd over you know it’s good to hear the TD Garden silent uh when you’re playing well they they still respect great basketball so regardless of um you know the attention that’s being paid to what it’s going to be like on my end uh I have a group to lead uh that’s going to be looking to me for a voice of peace and um to be able to control uh what I can control and also help them through it you know so I’ll take the brunt of it of all the yells and stuff like that and all the remarks but I’ve been able to grow since then and acknowledge that um you know I just just can handle things better especially when I want to put majority of my energy towards playing well I can’t just be getting into it with fans like that even though it may be fun at times but it’s a waste of energy it’s a waste of my time and it’s also a waste of my talent trying to answer questions from the past that people have and you know people are going to bring up the record and all the extra stuff again there’s days there’s idle time in between so you see the media pundits doing their normal thing it’s cool um but yeah I’m looking forward to the challenge on the court against the Boston Celtics and being able to leave my guys

  1. He was kind of destined to do great things with the Celtics and maybe he did in a parallel universe but not in this one. You are a Maverick now and you did a great job helping Luka out.

  2. Even as a Celtics fan myself, I can’t seem to hate this guy, not in the slightest. And I was one of his biggest and fewest defenders while he was on the team, but it’s refreshing to see him at peace with himself and reflecting on his indiscretions. That being said, Celtics in 5 🍀

  3. Look at the type of people who love Kai and the type of people who hate him. You dont want to live your life like the latter

  4. He needs to get some of whatever Luka has. When the fans start in with Luka he’s like, “We’re enemies, now? That’s so great! I love destroying enemies.”

  5. Wow, very refreshing positive vibes. 5:38
“…it’s a waste of energy, it’s a waste of my time, and it’s also a waste of my talent trying to answer questions from the past.. the media pundits doing their normal things”. 🙌

  6. See that Kyrie defenders? Even he has said himself that he has matured. You don’t have to defend every little thing he does when even he can admit when he was wrong.

  7. Its ok Kyrie, we get it, you’re human.. some of those celtics ahole fans can get under your skin. Time to shut them the hell up. Go mavs!
