Pistons you’ll see what I’m talking about what angle I’m going at there and then way later on the podcast I feel like this is a conversation that gets brought brought damn near every office I’m like I’m not joking I feel like this has been talked about probably like 40 times um but the the 2004 Pistons verse insert team from now whether it’s the Celtics whether it’s the Warriors which who we’re going to talk about here but if it’s the Warriors the Cavs whatever dominant team going around it’s always 2014 vers insert current team so talk about that a little later as well and where what started all of that um but obviously we’re going to start with Monty Williams so like I said in the cold open it’s June 3 at least when I’m recording this so if anything happens after this obviously I you know can’t help that um June 3D the Detroit pons have hired Tran Len as their president of basketball operations they have officially parted parted ways with Troy Weaver he is no longer a part of the organization in any capacity um and it seems like we’re starting to see the official start to the trasan era the end of the restore era is it’s it’s completely over and we’re seeing the start of the tras the trasan era however we still have not heard anything about Monty Williams and it feels like you can’t really get started on this new era without figuring out what’s going on with your head coach I’m not talking about figuring out who’s replacing him or I’m talking about what what’s his future at all like have you determined he coming back is he your head coach next year is he being fired is he coming back just next year as a as a as a trial coach as a trial season or do you believe in them long term like it doesn’t seem like they have quite literally any idea right now or let me not say quite literally any idea they don’t they don’t have an answer right now for any of that right now I think that’s a little I don’t want to say concerning I I would just say that you probably would like to get that answer hurried up like you probably want to get that answer sooner than later um and just to give it some backdrop on all this so I want to start all the way with Monty Williams contract so he’s currently on a six-year guaranteed contract with the Piston he’s gonna be earning 13 around 13.08 million a year um it can technically be an eight-year contract if they pick up his options in 2029 in 2030 it’s a team option obviously doesn’t look like that definitely isn’t going to be happening but technically it could be a eight-year contract so that’s the the money the contract you are looking at if you are the Detroit Pistons the other angle of this so that angle is that’s how much money you’d be eating if you did move on from Monty Williams the other aspect of this is that the longer you wait the more these coaching jobs or these not coaching jobs these coaching candidates are going to leave they’re not going to be available anymore uh it sounds like JJ reick is going to be heading over to the LA Lakers sounds like he’s going to be their coach um you got Kenny ainson and James br who are two of the hotter name names on the market currently um co- favorites over a report I had just seen today co- favorites for the Cleveland Cavaliers job you also had some other teams make uh why am I why am I drawing a blank on where Charles Lee just um Charles Lee just signed as a as a coach what yeah the Hornets Hornets my goodness I like I I I don’t know why I had a brain fart right there but yeah Charles Lee just signed with the the Charlotte Hornets so the longer you wait the more these coaching candidates are going to no longer be available so you I I the pisses need to figure out what they’re trying to do what what is their decision with Monty Williams and like I’ve reported not let me not say reported like I’ve said because I’m not a reporter I’m not on here to do reporting but I do know some things I’ve heard throughout the year that and this was backed up last week or I think two weeks ago that the money is not an issue if they don’t feel like Monty Williams is the right coach of the future Tom will swallow that money that is not going to stop him from firing Monty Williams like the money does not play a part in this right now it it simply is he the right guy for the job so take the contract stuff move it to the side the other thing is I’m simply going to say this this is all I’m going to say how many fans does Monty Williams have right now I think that’s a legit question how many fans of Monty Williams are there in the Pistons Community within the organization within the roster how many are there I think that’s a big question that should I would say signal the what way you should be going with this think you need to talk with some of the organization members you need to talk with some of the roster uh and I’m just gonna say I question just how many fans there are right now of Monty within the organization um but either way yes I so obviously I’m leaning more towards or not leaning more towards I’m all the way over in the you need to replace Monty Williams this past season they won 14 games I think bringing back a guy from a 14- win season is is is crazy it’s it’s in Insanity I think other people outside of Troy looking at that and saying you want to bring back anything from that era of a 14- win season the worst season in franchise history that’s crazy so I don’t think that makes any sense along with the fact if you add in that they have a new president basketball operations why would you not want to immediately start off the bat with your own guys in the front office and your own guys in the coaching staff and your own roster why is that not something you would want to start off instantly with I mean I think we kind of saw this already Troy never really got his own guy and for a lot part of the season the argument felt like it was like a mini civil war between Troy and Monty it was like okay well Troy didn’t get to pick his guy so does this year count for for Troy so you move on for Monty and now finally allow Troy to get his guy is that something that Pistons fans something that Pistons roster something that K Cunningham is that something that any anyone would want to see I’m not saying that would happen but that we did just witness that discussion happen if they were to say bring back Monty Williams and next year the season’s going bad how do we know that’s not a conversation that would come back up again oh well this wasn’t this wasn’t trac’s guy so the technically this yearo doesn’t count is that something that we want to hear again is that something anybody would want to hear again so I just don’t see really the logic in not wanting to get Tran’s own guy into the building let him get his own era started instead of wasting uh what I would what I would assume is a trial year for Monte this upcoming year okay let’s see what he’s worth let’s see if I want to keep him longterm I think you need to nail your long-term guy right now you need to move on from everybody you’ve already moved on from Troy his he he paid for his sins why should Monty not pay for his sins I think I think it would be a little messed up if Troy was the only one gone as if this was all on Troy this was not all on Troy was a lot of it on Troy yes but there’s there’s blood everywhere okay kind of scap goting Troy as the only guy that went wrong or did something wrong I think would be a massive mistake I don’t think that’s true I don’t think that would be right I don’t think it would be a good way to start off the your your your era get your own guys in here get your long-term coach in here nailed down start building from the ground up create a concrete core vision of your team this should not be a trial year this you should be building the core of uh laying down the cement of your of your era so that’s where I stand with it um I don’t know what when we’re I’d have to assume you’re going to hear about it soon like again it’s June 3 like we’re a month away from free agency we’re a month away from the draft like it’s coming up it’s coming up pretty soon um like I said coaching candidates are leaving you’re already hearing trade rumors start like you’d like to get the coach in there um so I’d assume it’s coming soon but who knows who knows um just get a decision at all like they need to come to a decision with whether it is bringing Monty back or not like you need to know who your head coach is you need to know who your head coach is so don’t know don’t know what’s going on I think it would be pretty crazy to bring back Monty Williams um but you know who knows who knows what will happen um let me know in the comments section down below if you what I thought June 6 right yeah June 6 so the NBA finals are starting in a few days here you got the Boston Celtics representing the East you got the Dallas Mavericks representing the West let me know in the comments section who you guys got winning and why um but the Boston Celtics are representing the East they have been the best team in the NBA from start to finish now whether they end up winning the finals they actually winning the championship um we’ll see but so from start to finish the Boston Celtics were the best team in the entire NBA they won 64 games which is quite a a a lead on the next team which was the Thunder and the nuggets at 57 wins that’s a seven game lead they had on anyone else that’s a 14 game lead they had on anywhere else anyone else in the Eastern Conference so you might be asking when you see this topic who what do you mean is the East open the Celtics are the best team in the NBA They just won 64 games how the hell is the East open well I’ll tell you this this is what I mean by the East is open and we’ll see you you’ll understand why I’m going at this and and and the Pistons angle of this so just let’s just go over to the Eastern or the Western Conference the Western Conference has the Dallas Mavericks in the final this year I think you realistically could have said six to seven teams net Wester conference could have made the NBA Finals I don’t think it would have been crazy you got the OKC Thunder at 57 wins this year you got the Nuggets who I thought was the favorites and I think was shocking that they didn’t make it but they the nuggets with joic 57 then you got the Timberwolves coming up with ant just was in the Conference Finals at 56 wins you got the Clippers who just won 51 games and if they’re ever at any point if they ever get the chance to to be lucky and and and you know injuryf free to go to the finals you have the Mavericks at the fifth seed who who are in the finals you got the Suns who have KD Devin Booker Bradley Beal you got the Lakers who have LeBron and AD you got the Pelicans that when they’re healthy I think are really scary with Zion bi and we’ll see who they get for bi but Zion and a really nice Squad of Trey Murphy all those guys you got the Kings who are just at the top of the conference last year you got the Warriors and Steph Curry who are going to retool you got the Houston Rockets who are going to be taking the next step I assume is going to be in the top 10 next year you got the Grizzlies coming back with a healthy John Morant and jiren Jackson and Marcus Smart and that whole team then you got Victor wanyama coming up at some point he’s gonna take over the conference so I literally just name probably like 12 to 13 teams just now in the west of conference they are going to be fighting for that they are going to be legit and and out of those 12 teams I’d say like six or seven of them are legit right now title contenders they probably feel like they’re legit title contenders when you go over to the east you got the Celtics who else Yannis has been hurt the last few years if Giannis is healthy obviously you got the Bucks who else the Sixers if they’re healthy but I’m not Sixers are basically the Clippers of the East for me embiid’s never healthy in the East so if you’re just assuming he’s healthy it’s like assuming I’m gonna grow wings and start flying so I’m not going to count that the Pacers they made the West Eastern Conference Finals are they like no shadeed all the Indiana but are they some Juggernaut the hulks just made the Conference Finals a few years ago are they a juggernaut they didn’t even make the playoffs you got the magic who just played a really good first round Series against the Cavs you got the Cavs they’re not some Juggernaut either you got the Knicks who are great story but are they some Juggernaut no the Bulls no the heat they were just eight seed this year and that was with Jimmy healthy for uh for the the regular season I know he they were dinged up a little bit throughout the regular season but in playoffs they obviously got hurt but that’s kind of how they’ve been doing they at the bottom of the conference whatever but anyways if you see where I’m going with this the West is not open at all it’s stacked from like top to to bottom there’s no like it’s gonna be hard to see where teams can jump in at where whereas in the East the East is open for a team like the Detroit Pistons to not make the finals but to make a big jump if there is a if there is a conference where you could say oh where’d that team come from that team made a big jump I didn’t see that coming and it actually happened it’s the East it will happen in the East we’ve seen it happen multiple years in a row we saw it happen with the Hawks we just witnessed it happened this year with the Pacers we witnessed it happened with the with the magic the Bulls before Lonzo got hurt the Bulls were taken off the Raptors were just good a few years ago like you you the Knicks the Knicks I mean the Knicks this year too they won 50 games anyone see them doing that I don’t feel like a lot of people had that pencil penciled in for them to be the second seed every year here I feel like the Eastern Conference is open for a team at the bottom for a team trying to get better to make a crazy leap and find themselves in the second round of the playoffs now again they won’t Boston’s at the head of the head of the snake I don’t think I’m I’m not talking at all about making the finals that is so far away into the Far Far Future it’s not even being discussed but if the pisses were in the west I think we would be talking about man how are they going to get to 13 like how are they going to even get to the 12th seed like that’s going to be hard like how The Next Step whereas in the East if the Pistons got aggressive and things went their way and they actually tried to build a great team a good team if they got aggressive there’s a future where I can see them jumping up to seven just because of how the East is the Orlando Magic made a huge jump to five none of these teams in the East are some Juggernaut to where you can’t see if a if your star player and Kate makes a development and you actually get aggressive building a team what what’s stopping why h h what what’s stopping them in the East it’s the same thing I’m sure magic fans were saying to themselves last year it’s the same thing I’m sure Hawks fans were saying themselves few years ago same thing I think Pacers fans were probably saying to themselves years ago same thing I’m sure Nicks fans were saying to themselves the East is open for a team like the Pistons heck I’m sure the same topic that I’m saying right now I’m sure Wizards fans are saying to themselves that the I know the horners fans you’re seeing them talk about it there was a report that just came out that they’re looking at how looked right before he got hurt and they think they can make a big jump next year why is that because the East is open for a team like the Pistons the Wizards the Hornets the the R any of these teams if they were to get aggressive and they get the right development out of their young star they get aggressive and actually build a team around that young star they can it wouldn’t be shocking in a year from now we’re watching them jump five spots in standings the East is open the pisses need to take advantage that’s where I’m it was a long way of getting to that the pisses need to take advantage that this is not the West the East is open outside of Boston and Milwaukee if you want to count wanis is healthy obviously those top two I think it’s locked and if you want to count and be because if he can play throughout the year yeah they’ll be the three se but still that’s not interrupting anything from four to 10 is wide open wide open and like I said mb’s always hurt so I’m not even gonna count them at three you don’t know what could ever happen the East is wide open for anyone not at the very top which means and this corelates before I get to what it means and this correlates Kate is getting better Kate made a big jump this past year he looks like he’s ready to start having a team built around him to try to take another step all that is happening at the same time as the East is wide open if the Pistons did not get aggressive this off season to try and make a jump in the East I I don’t like I I would I feel like everyone would be disappointed that’s evolved like any everyone that’s involved I feel like would just be disappointed about that because yeah you could just run it you know somewhat running back with the young guys and take it slow again and be 14th 13th in the East again you you could do that or you could actually go out and try to build a functional roster and somehow find yourself Ninth Place because your young star is a young star and he actually has quality pieces around him and you actually made a good team you actually built the team around them and then who knows what will happen because the East is wide open there are no juggernauts in here it’s open it’s right there for the taking for a team at the bottom like I said the Pistons Wizards Hornets to make a jump into the top eight to make a jump into the top six like it’s right there I won’t be shocked if any of those teams did it and I think a lot of Pistons fans would be disappointing if it wasn’t them and there’s no reason it shouldn’t be they have 65 I just saw the new projections for salary cap space the Pistons have 65 estimated it’s it’s a a guess right now but $65 million in cap space this off season they have movable contracts they have tradable contracts they have a tradeable fifth overall pick they have a young star to build around they’re they’re there’s no excuse for why the Pistons can’t be the team that make that takes an aggressive uh uh step towards trying to get to the top eight there’s no reason why they can’t n none at all it’s right there for you you are fully capable of doing it where they actually want to do it we’ll see but it’s right there for the taken in my opinion so let me know what you guys think roll you guys W be able to move your feet we get you guys out of there won’t even be close you guys would get destroyed BL blah blah then Rasheed clapped back and was like you guys couldn’t check us you guys are too small all this stuff so let’s just get out the way who would win that match up between the 2004 pistons and the Golden State Warriors guys can we be serious can we be real here like come on can can we be real the the Golden State Warriors are probably the greatest team ever assembled that that 2018 Golden State Warriors where Kevin Durant and Steph Curry is probably the greatest team ever assembled can we be can we be serious can we be real like I I know I’m I know I’m going to upset a lot of people but hey just because I was born here doesn’t mean I have to be biased the Golden State Warriors have two arguably top 10 players of all time on their roster at the very least two top 15 players of their team of all time they when they had that team they literally wiped through the entire NBA you had players saying that this isn’t fair after the fact we have players talking about right now how they knew it just wasn’t fair they didn’t even care like feel like trying they they swept through everybody they like they just destroyed everybody I I don’t care you could play in 1980s rules 90s rules 2000 rules 2010 2 2020 rules the goalen state war is to Simply have more Talent okay I I I listen I love that 2004 team that defense was crazy would it be an absolute destruction I no but like the go State Warriors are winning the the the Pistons team in 2004 they do not like I this comes off I know people are when people don’t pick the 2004 Pistons everyone thinks it’s disrespect and sometimes it is when against certain teams but against this is probably the greatest team we’ve ever witnessed in our lives play basketball they are not beating that team it’s not happening I don’t think there’s any team that’s beating that 2018 Golden State Warriors team actually I don’t think I know I’m going to go out in a limb and say right now no one is beating that 2018 Warriors team at that Peak they are not being beaten by anybody I don’t care what you could I am was went Blasphemous just now okay let me calm down I am was said the Dream Team the Dream Team would beat them but like NBA team there is no team that’s beating that 2018 Warriors team it’s not no shade to the Detroit Pistons of 2004 there are some dogs defensively they’re crazy like I get it and you want to play with the the hand check rules okay go ahead I’m telling you wouldn’t matter that is the greatest team of all time we’ve ever witnessed you want to say other teams that we’ve seen win the championship over the last few years yeah 2004 team definitely could do their thing against them but I don’t think there’s any team in NBA history that’s messing with that Warriors team like that was unfair it was unfair it was unbeatable unless an injury happened and that’s what we saw happen in 19 so that’s all I’ve got that’s all my input is on it and you guys know I’ve recorded this podcast and I’ve done episodes on why I think the whole idea of oh the Pistons didn’t have a star why I think that’s stupid and and disrespectful to them I think very clearly chony and Ben were Hall of Famers and it looks like they’re going to be obviously but like those two guys were stars and if trony was in this era he’d be one of the best players in the NBA no like that’s I’ve said this numerous times I’m very high on those guys those guys are great but we’re talking about the greatest team of all time here okay like that team was like damn near Unstoppable I don’t think anyone’s beating them so no disrespect to the 2004 team and and if any of the going to work team happens to see me saying this please don’t come at me like come on dude like it’s the greatest team of all time has Steph Curry and Kevin Durant on the same team like please be real uh that’s but that’s my stance on it um I’ll leave it open I know I’m going to get destroyed for that one because I know everyone’s going to pick the four Pistons um and that’s fine that’s fine but you know just because I was born here doesn’t mean I had to have a bias and that kind of stuff I’m gonna take the grayest team of all time I’m so and that that’s no shade to 2004 uh that’s all I got for you guys today though hit that
