How should the Memphis Grizzlies maximize Ja Morant?

How should the Memphis Grizzlies maximize Ja Morant?

on this Tuesday edition of locked on Grizzlies the dynamic duo Rides Again and we are talking a trade idea but not the kind of trade that maybe you’re expecting from us here at lockdown Grizzlies plus you have a superstar in John morance how are you going to set him up for Success what type of perimeter players what type of bigs are going to maximize the superstar that Memphis has because if the NBA finals are teaching us anything you need your Superstar to be at their best Memphis has that guy how do you get him to his best we’ll talk about that in more on this episode of lockon Grizzlies you get Podcast YouTube Apple Spotify Amazon it’s all good each and every time an episode of lockdown Grizzlies drop hopefully you are with us to Michael it’s great to have you back we’ll jump right in here because I’m very excited about this idea and I’m very excited for you to poo poo on all of my trade ideas that I’m about to share those of you that are every dayers that check out lockon Grizzlies each and every time an episode drops you know that I’m the trade machine guy right I have been since like 2012 right and de Michel is the one who likes to bring us back down to earth right he’s like B rabbit from eight miles not back to reality up there goes gravity Joe’s trade is dead so I have three potential targets because on yesterday’s show if you missed it it’s a great one go check it out I talked about how maybe we’re interpreting this Marcus Smart trade possibility all wrong I you know lots of folks it’s not just me talking about Brook Lopez or Jared Allen bringing in a big and addressing the issue that way yeah more and more to Michael you hear folks talking about this five out offense right L Ro coming in Drew Hill of the daily memphian wrote an article about you know the the changes potentially offensively and those sorts of things what’s being experimented on at the division three level which I’m familiar with as a former division 3 College athlete and how some of that stuff is being implemented in the professional ranks and there’s a lot of validity to that maybe this is memphis’s fora into that time will tell maybe we’re looking at this the wrong way maybe jiren is going to be the five and if there is going to be a trade it could be for a wing with Marcus Smart Plus that number nine overall pick in this draft so without further ado I have I have three ideas okay and I think one team is more realistic than the other and I think that one player that I’m going to suggest is completely not going to happen all right and we’ll see maybe once we work through the exercise I can reveal who the the certain people were okay so yeah first off I’m going to start with the Orlando Magic because I think the magic are a team that are in desperate need of a point guard right traditional point guard tus Jones is going to be there in agency he makes all the sense in the world for Orlando I could see tus winding up there as a starter and being a great facilitator for an upand cominging team but if the magic want to talk themselves into a combo guard with a championship pedigree like am Marcus Smart I could see something along the lines of am Marcus Smart and number nine overall for you know fron vogner of the magic if the magic were willing to move on from that player we know going back a couple of years that the Grizzlies were interested in vog in that draft where Z Williams was eventually the pick could it be a scenario where they write the wrong and they use that lottery pick in this draft to bring in the guy that perhaps they wanted all along again MoneyWise it doesn’t necessarily need to be smart it could be a combination of Al dama and laravia if that was more attractive but that that’s my first idea again do the magic need the number nine overall pick not necessarily I don’t know that that’s the best fit I kind of just killed the lead that’s probably the this is probably the least likely idea that I came up with here but I’m curious as to your take do you think Vagner would be a nice fit if they are going to go to more of a five out model of offense I think he he would be solid but uh you know at this point I’m more interested in kind of like the complimentary players more than the bucket Getters and and and you know him and Paulo berer is is great as both of those young players were this past season in Orlando you’ve seen signs where they’re still figuring out you know uh playing well together you see a lot of times you know Paulo has a big game fron is you know uh kind of you know having an off night it’s not like in Memphis when we talk J Dez and jiren play those first five or six games together and they scored 20 points a piece you know each time because of the chemistry because of the kar because of you know how their Gams balance off of one another uh fron is another guy who would need the ball doesn’t necessarily grade that as a great spot up shooter uh I like the you talk about the five out aspect of it uh there is plus potential there this is a 610 you know big for can play The Three Can Play the four uh take advantage of those mismatches and all of that so uh you know that’s the part where it makes the sense to me and I’m with you you did say this is that is this is the least likely one because of the fact that at the end of the day Orlando you know they’re a young team that’s kind of on the rise too like a Memphis uh over the last few years so they’re probably looking more to add like you said the tiest Jones of the world and I think I mentioned Luke Canard on here you know as a potential option for Orlando like they need point guard play but they need shooting you know too so uh you know I think there’s some other deals that that make sense when you think Orlando make a little bit more sense you know we talk about it a thousand times about the bigs and stuff but yeah uh when you talk about France Wagner and in a fit uh I can see it but uh I’m leaning more towards these shooters to to put around the Jaws in the CHS yeah that makes sense and again you’re exactly right we’ve talked about Goa before we’ve talked about when Carter Jr you know we’re we’re we’re we’re well aware that the Griz need a big no one is more aware than me the purpose of this is well maybe we’re going about this all wrong maybe the Grizzlies F over there that’s been maybe maybe Mr Fifi faam is jiren Jackson Jr and they they bring in a guy for you know the veterans minimum or the mid-level exception whatever that winds up looking like depending on their cap situation and that’s how they address it right it could be a different angle a different road to the same end so to speak speak uh the one that I think is more realistic in terms of team is the Washington Wizards uh not quite Hometown Washington Wizards for me they’re about two miles north or two hours North from where I am here in Richmond Virginia but the Wizards need all the lottery Talent they can get yeah and I think that if the Grizzlies were willing to put out number nine and Marcus Smart Kyle kozma sitting right there now is the idea of Kyle kozma in 2024 better than Kyle kma in reality I think that’s very possible and I want to stress I’m not saying I would do this I’m on the record yesterday saying I think Marcus Smart should be here and I think Marcus Smart’s the starter if he is here we have no idea what that fully looks like yet we’ve had nine games of it we don’t have enough of a sample size but if you’re trying to make a trade and make the roster a little more balanced in terms of size Kyle kozma’s right there Denny Adia is right there if Smart Plus n gets you Adia I think I say yes because he just signed a contract extension it’s a little bit more Team friendly kma’s is a larger number and again I think the idea of kosma is greater at the moment than his reality but to me the Wizards make a lot of sense as a trade partner because they need as much young Lottery Talent as they can get the Grizzlies don’t need that they they they are past that especially since they have GG Jackson Who everybody says would be a lottery pick in this draft if he were in this draft which again friendly reminder this is the draft he’s technically supposed to be in so with all that being said I think that I could see the Grizzlies and the Wizards who had a relationship from last summer with the tus Jones trade I think that maybe not exactly the way I just described it but that might be a team to keep an eye on if Memphis is trying to upgrade the here and now as opposed to taking another young player yeah exactly uh I think you know from that perspective you know that that’s something that does make sense you know for what Memphis uh needs what they uh kind of you know are lacking you know those those young versatile Wing scorers right uh guys you know we know what the back court can do like we know what jarn can do in the front court and I believe you believe speaking for you years Joe that GG Jackson you know over the course of time it can be one of those type of players but as Joe mull X just likes to say uh we trying to win a championship right now and and I mean Danny to me makes sense right now KY kosma you talk about the pedigree standpoint like this is a guy he’s a champion we can talk about how poor as a Defender he’s been in Washington and whatnot but I’m a firm believer and I mean look at certain guys playing in the finals right now Derek white Drew holiday at certain points of his career all those guys are examples to me Kristof porzingis too three players those three players they are examples of if you put good players in good situations they shine more you put good players I’m not talking about great players you put good players in bad situations they’re probably going to blend in a little bit and Derek white in San Antonio people didn’t probably think he could be this good of a role player uh but the signs are there and you know Drew holiday we know what his careers look like when he was in you know playing with the Sixers and playing in New Orleans when he was making his name really as a all League type of Defender there and whatnot but at at the same time uh I’m confident that whoever like if it’s Kyle kman if it’s Danny uh they’re gonna rise to the occasion around the Memphis rosters so like the Cal kma defensive concerns I get them I understand them uh but you put him in Memphis you know around some other guys I think it’s it’s a decent situation I’m not on the K kma to mempis train so to speak but uh I if they were to make that move hypothetically I wouldn’t say it’s it’s gonna like be the move that would like deter the franchise up there you know realistic ghost going forward I would agree I I think you’re right and you make a great Point even if it’s not kozma right if even if it’s not abdia you put a Kyle k like is kozma the second best player on the Wizards or maybe even the best player on the Washington Wizards if you put kozma on the Grizzlies he’s the fourth best guy very clearly right at best he’s the fourth best guy last year I mean look how much different he looks with this level of talent around him and I think that Boston and maybe this is a topic for a future episode that’s something that Memphis can take away in terms of roster construction look around the league at the Wizards and the Spurs is there a team that has a bad skill guy who could be good if he was the fourth or fifth best player maybe that’s the dirt person that you try to add but all of this is null and void because if John Morant doesn’t come back the way that he’s supposed to partner yeah none of this matters right so what we’re gonna focus on the remainder of today’s show is what demichel and I want to see built around jaw whether it’s the draft free agency not even necessarily names just what we want to prioritize in terms of talent that can make J shine we’ll talk about that next here on lockon Grizzlies but first this episode of lockon Grizzlies is brought to you by FanDuel is winner take all time the NBA Finals about to get underway same thing with the NHL Stanley Cup FanDuel is and so much more FanDuel is a blast a wonderful way to make it a little more interesting if your team like ours in the mempis Grizzlies is not in the hunt you want to make the NBA Finals a little bit more intriguing FanDuel is a great way to do it visit fanduel.com lockon and make every playoff shot count FanDuel America’s number one sports book when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies we will be discussing fits the best fits around johnar on the perimeter first up stick with us welcome back to lockon Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X joined by my co-host to Michael Cole the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee he’s the award-winning Memphis Grizzlies beat writer for that publication so great to have demichel back with me on the show today and Dem Michel we’re going to jump right in as we talked about a little bit there at the end of the prior segment none of this matters right Kyle kma Denny Adia Jared Allen Brook Lopez whoever you want to Target in a trade none of those guys are superstars John Morant is a superstar and Luca donr is a superstar look at the Dallas Mavericks Jason Tatum is a superstar look at the Boston Celtics there are second Superstars next to them and Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown respectively but you get the point you need at least one to be a legitimate Championship threat how do you see it being the best use of memphis’s time the best use of memphis’s resources to try to build around that talent in John Morant let’s start on the perimeter so whether it’s free agency the draft again we’re not necessarily talking about names here as much as we’re talking about what you think looks and works best next to morand if you look at the net rating numbers you know with guys like Desmond Bank Luke Canard when those guys are on the floor with John Mor that’s when the chrises are at their bets more so than than other guys in the has like Dylan Brooks you know for example and it’s because you know we know this the things when Josh struggles in the playoffs it’s because teams are trapping him uh you need another ball handler in those situation we’ve seen them kind of do the two two guard things and stretches with tyus Jones two-point guard thing Ty Jones and and johnar playing together we saw that some in the playoffs against Minnesota against Golden State but what the main thing that stands out to me is is perimeter shooting I know we’ve talked about it you know a lot but uh you you need just a couple more guys who teams are going to be afraid to leave because the easiest way to guard John Morant and I mean when I say easy it’s still hard but what’s been proven to be the most successful way is you build a wall in the pl in the paint and J just goes running straight into it and sometimes he jumps over the whole wall and sometimes you know he finishes through the wall or whatever the case may be but as we saw against Minnesota in that first round Series where he had some decent moments but it it wasn’t typical like his best highlights are like full-fledged dunking all over Malik Beasley that’s how tough you know they were making it for J in that game in that series uh same thing when he played the Lakers same thing when he played Golden State but the best way to offset that you know you you go through the history you know the NBA like think about uh when the the Thunder really uh started to to become like the post James Harden era when it was KD and Russ and when they really went to another level was when Serge Ibaka’s you know mid-range and even you know the three-point shooting uh went to another level when he started he didn’t like shooting the three-pointers and sitting in the corner and all that stuff but that kind of took them to another level and it took Russell Westbrook’s game to a whole another level I I think you know that’s the type of thing I see happening for J when you talk about perimeter uh guys you you don’t need Desmond Bane or Luke Canard but you you you need some decent Shooters like uh your first segment you know another team that that I was thinking about in the first segment I was thinking about the Brooklyn Joe uh we talked about Dorian fny Smith some talked about some other guys I think briefly last year for a little bit we talked about cam Johnson before he signed that that extension you know uh Brooklyn is still in a in a muddy situation over there I don’t think any of those guys maybe outside of like Mel Bridges are just you know firmly uh you know entrenched in their roster spots like guys like that like cam Johnson is a proen elite NBA three-point shooter Dorian FY Smith has knocked down big shots he’s been to the West Conference Finals and and so much uh but there are so many players around the league that I feel like it three and d three in 60% defense like it doesn’t even have to be a great defender like I think you just need to put better Shooters uh good Shooters around johnar that’s going to maximize his game that’s going to maximize those players games because they’re going to get easy shots and uh there are a lot of players who can feel those type of roles around the league just amazing to me since you hate Luke Canard so much and you want to trade him away so just a joke stay calm everybody that’s out there if if if Luke canard’s agent is listening I made that joke that was not a um or if Luke’s listening hi Luke hopefully you know how much I love you but I think that you’re on to something in terms of the spacing you you have an athlete that can get to the basket at will I think two seasons ago this is a guy at six foot3 who led the NBA and points in the paint like what in the hell are we talking about right you you want to get that guy as much room to operate with as possible that comes with floor spacing I think that’s number one but since you took it fairly I continue to want to see guys that can defend around him not because I think jaah isn’t improving as a Defender because he is if you watch the games you look at the numbers He’s Not Great by any stretch of the imagination but he’s not Trey young either he’s not abysmal on that end and he is getting better at playing passing Lanes the Highlight blocks as a health Defender wants to be good defensively too he is much better as a Heth defender in terms of you know maybe on ball attack point or point of attack defense he has some room to grow but I would love to continue to see guys that can defend but I think the floor spacing is the biggest piece of that and let us know in the comments if you guys agree with the Michael disagree I’m on the same side as him and I honestly don’t have a ton to add I thought he nailed it I’d love to see a little bit more defense but you want to create as much room for morance and that’s why as much as I make fun of you know over analyzing an assistant coach coming in yeah the five out concept theoretically speaking makes John Morant a monster because there’s no one in the paint now you have to have Shooters around him and again they have an offseason to try to put this together we’ll see how it completely changes the offense it completely yeah and it makes him an even bigger weapon than he already is if you’re able to keep that space and actually have threats on the perimeter with him so let the Michael and I know what you think in terms of perimeter play when it comes to helping John Moran when we come back we’re going to revisit the bigs the front Court we’ve talked in the past or at least I have about how jiren and jaah have not always meshed in the offensive end in particular so what are some things that we’d like to see from bigs that the Grizzlies Target whether it’s the draft free agency whatever it might be we’ll talk about that next year on lockdown Grizzlies but first you’ll notice that the Michael Cole and I we have a wonderful relationship I I consider him a friend he tolerates me very well we don’t scream each other this isn’t Fox Sports this betterhelp hp.com locked on NBA when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies closing out Today’s Show talking bigs to put around johnar to maximize his potential stick with us welcome back to lockdown Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X closing out this Tuesday edition of the show with my wonderful co-host to Michel Cole of the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee award-winning Memphis Grizzlies beat Rider to Michel Cole he deserves that recognition to Michael it’s been a great show as always when you and I get to talk Grizzlies basketball together and we’ll close up the conversation with big men we talked about perimeter shooting we talked about the importance of that obviously there’s bigs as well and in this era of position basketball which I like to make fun of our mutual friend Parker Fleming for talking about so much that and shooting gravity um but this positionist thing there’s wings and there’s bigs right guards Wings bigs however you want to break it down there’s all sorts of different ways to do it John Morant is a guard right he’s a lead guard he’s a Creator a dribble penetrator he does all of that so well what kind of big men do you want to see job be surrounded by because he’s experienced Jonas valunas he’s experienced Stephen Adams and he’s also experienced jiren Jackson Jr at the five he’s experienced different types of bigs who do you think not necessarily a particular player but an archetype what type of big do you think maximizes what jaw does well the most well I think when we look at this part of it you know with the perimeter it’s it’s a little different but with the bigs uh the proof is in the pudding to me like I think we have seen through the results of J’s first four plus Seasons uh what bigs he works best with I’m gonna list four different I’m gonna say four players names here and four different types of players in my mind Stephen Adams jonis valentinis Brandon Clark Jaren Jackson J if you ask me totally my opinion Joe’s may be a little bit different but if you ask me to rank those four bigs from the standpoint of who did jar uh coexist the best with from the standpoint who brought out the best version of jar and uh pretty much when they were on the floor yield the best results i’ say Stephen Adams would be at the top of that list for me Brandon Clark would be number two jiren would be three jonis would be four that’s exactly my list by the way that’s your list sympatico nailed it that’s why we co-host unlocked on Grizzard so when you when you think about it like that Joe uh it’s very easy to me when you when you look at those two guys at the top Stephen Adams and Brandon Clark they’re not in the post with the two hands in the air beg asking for the ball you’re not gonna see Brandon Clark post ups with five seconds on the shot clock you’re not gonna see Stephen Adam post up with five seconds on the shot clock you’re gonna see jiren Jackson Jr post ups for five seconds on shot clock you’re gonna see yonis valent Tunis uh post UPS we’ve talked about the usage part of that so I’m gonna pivot away from that a little bit uh we’ve talked about how the high usage offensive bigs are are not the best FS with it but there’s another level here too Jaren Jackson Jr you’ve talked about it probably more than me Joe from the standpoint he’s not really you know uh a a roller you know to the basket you know that’s not an area that he’s graded out uh at well at over the course of his NBA career and uh the pick and pop part of his game I’ve talked about it from the shooting standpoint like we can talk all day about oh jiren you know the pick and pop he’s a stretch big and all that but at the end of the day we’re just keeping it real he still low League average in three-point shooting sure any given day he can make four or five three-pointers and and look really good from Beyond The Arc but at the end of day when you look at the back of you know like in baseball they say look at the back of the baseball card when you look at the the totality of the numbers it’s below League average three-point shooting so the pick and pop thing doesn’t really impress me personally as much as others because in the playoffs they’re gonna make him pick and pop and is he do you trust a below League average three-point shooter uh to make enough to carry you all the way to the final it’s possible I mean look at some of these guys in the playoffs you know Jen McDaniels Derrick Jones Juniors how they’ve risen to the occasion but I’m not dependent on that so with all that with with the Brandon Clark his Rim running ability the lob threat we’ve seen him and J connect so many times because when J gets going downhill and you got Brandon Clark ready to plant two feet and jump in the air defenses don’t know what to do you choose jaw the ball’s about to fly right over your head you choose Brandon Clark jaw’s about to jump right over your head like it it’s a pick your poison type of thing whereas with jiren with Jon with theonas uh it was a little bit different so we talk about the best bigs to help out Jah and this isn’t to say that Jah and jiren you know don’t work together and all that because at the end of the day when Jah goes to the bench who takes over it’s it’s usually jiren Jackson Jr so that works from the standpoint of yeah you you you kind of got the Ying to the Yang when know when J’s out of the game now it’s jiren’s trying to cook a little bit more but we’re solely talking about who is the best to help out johnar I think we’re talking low usage guys guys who can do some Rim running in the case of a player like a Stephen Adams you know hard screen shedding screen setting to clear up space you know for J when he’s you know in the paint dealing with all you know those bodies and things like that those are the type of guys I think Brandon Clark and Stephen Adams uh somewhere in between that uh that’s the type of player I’m going for and honestly jiren Jackson Jr and youngers those are the type of guys I think you should pivot away from if your if your goal is to put the maximized help Tom rant so so let me get this straight I don’t want to put words in your mouth partner you’re saying that if you could find a player who is a cross between Brandon Clark and Stephen Adams they may very well be the perfect big to play next to John Mor huh if only there was one of them available in the upcoming NBA draft oh wait there is his name’s Donovan kingan right and and I think that that if he’s a more lateral a more vertical yeah Stephen Adams then again what are we talking about guy’s right there now will he be there at nine maybe we talk about in our next episode to Michael how will how far are we willing to move up to inquire somebody even if it’s not clinging maybe there’s somebody else on your list that you would be willing to sell some assets for to move up how far are you willing to go are you willing to go to Six with the Hornets are you willing to go to three with the rockets that might be a good topic of conversation for us on tomorrow’s show even how high uh Deal or No Deal me lock on Grizzlies Edition that might be a an interesting topic but you know I I again I think you nailed it I I I’m a big fan of that list Stephen Adams was a perfect fit because he didn’t need to score he would score he could score if you gave him the opportunity but he helped job be the best he could be same thing with Clark jiren is not necessarily that kind of player now to his credit he has become more of that guy we talked about the assist percentage all the time that is higher than it’s ever been he helped facilitate more that he ever has as a pro maybe this version of Jaren will look a little bit different alongside jaw but I’m excited about Brandon Clark in jaw more than I am jiren Jackson Jr in jaw maybe I’m wrong for that maybe folks in the comments can let me know what they think I don’t think you’re wrong I’m I’m with you I think Clark and jaw they’re they’re quite the duo especially in the pick and role um thank you guys so much for hanging out with us on this episode of lockdown Grizzlies tomorrow will be back and as I alluded to a little bit there to Michael maybe you know I’m big on clinging maybe you’ve got somebody that you’ve got I know we’ve talked about draft crushes a little bit maybe there’s somebody that you’re like you know what I would stand on the table if dichael Cole was the GM of the Memphis grizzley I’m standing on the table in front of Robert Pera and I’m saying we gotta trade up for this guy so maybe you come with that guy for you everybody knows who it is for me right it’s Donovan kingan and we talk okay deal or no deal would you be willing to give up what we side it must take to get to number three or to get to number six how high are you willing to climb in this draft to Michael I think that’s an interesting question for tomorrow show yeah it is it is you know I think we all have talked about the idea of the the Grizzlies needing the big and them acquiring it with this n big but but yeah how far are you willing to go up uh we talked about how loaded The Bigs uh I mean those teams in front of the Grizzlies are at the big spot so all of that is going to come into play but yeah let’s talk about it tomorrow all like it sounds good looking forward to it thank you demichel for everything you do as always for us here at lockon Grizzlies and thank you dear listener dear viewer for being with us wherever you’re checking out the show whether it’s YouTube Apple Spotify Amazon like comment rate If the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks teach us anything, it probably should be that superstars matter. The Memphis Grizzlies have one of those – Ja Morant – but he can’t do it alone. Beyond Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane, what type of player should Memphis prioritize bringing in to help Ja win a title? Hosts Damichael Cole and Joe Mullinax break that down and talk some Marcus Smart trade ideas on this episode of Locked on Grizzlies!

  1. Being that Tyus Jones is a free agent this year, would Memphis be willing to send the Wizards a 2nd round pick for Tyus? Or the Wizards could include Kyle Kuzma and, in return, receive the #9 pick in the 2024 draft? Memphis would need to include a player(s) in the trade due to salary.

  2. Not sure what the move is, but they need to surround Ja with people that can help hide him in the paint and protect him as much as possible

  3. No to Tyus Jones. Pippen Jr is a little bit more athletic and a better shooter. Also Tyus has consistently underperformed in the playoffs (when it matters most)

  4. Damychal is being nice. No way In hell Orlando trades Wagner, nor is he a great fit for us

  5. Damychal did you just compare Kyle Kuzma to Derrick White, KP and Jrue Holiday? Lmao
