Draft options

I think if they’re going to be on our team, my order of realistic wants goes:

Da Silva (this year’s Jaquez)
Holmes (Swiss army hybrid big/wing, can shoot a little)
Scheierman (3 and D with more emphasis on the 3)
George (knockdown shooter with some ball skills)
Tyler Smith (also a hybrid potential that can shoot but is probably too raw for our rotation)
I don’t like the guy this has the Cavs drafting. I also highly doubt that many traditional point guards go where this mock has them going given the league’s (valid) obsession with wings.

Holmes is intriguing to me, if he is still available. Who knows, maybe the Cavs are the team that gave him a promise?

At that draft spot, I’m not sure there are any better fits when you consider both the position of need and the possibility to contribute in the near-term.

I think the big thing for him is how much more can he improve his outside shot, and if he has/can develop NBA range. His shooting improvements have been pretty dramatic in his 3 years in Dayton (FT: 58-71%, 3pt: 14-38%), so my question is how much further can he push those numbers with better training?

He isn’t turning 22 until August either, so he’s still decently young for a 3rd-year guy.

Holmes will be a smallball center in the NBA and isn’t skilled enough to play next to Mobley or Allen. If we are able to trade Allen for Ingram/good wing, I would like him as a backup to Mobley, but otherwise I wouldn’t use the pick on a non-rotation player. Tyler Smith, Jalen Bridges, Tristan Da Silva, Cam Christie, Jaylen Wells and Antonio Reeves are my favorite players at 20, with Jaylen Wells being my main target. I would use the pick on a perimeter player/wing and sign Jalen Smith or Precious Achiuwa in FA.

  3. Jaylon Tyson, Tyler Smith, or a trade up for Clingan. Potentially Edey if he is still on the board.
