A Sacramento Kings, Kyle Kuzma Trade on Draft Night Could Actually Happen! | Locked On Kings
is now the time for the Sacramento Kings finally to go out and actually get Kyle kozma he’s been connected to the Sacramento Kings year after year after year and on today’s locked on Kings podcast the host of the locked on Wizards podcast Brandon Scott joins me to talk about a potential deal and as you’ll find out in this conversation the Kings have something right now that the Washington Wizards might really really want we’ll discuss right here on locked on Kings you are locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome into lockon Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all on season long and today’s episode is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs which helps you find the qualified candidates that you want to talk to faster post your job for free at linkedin.com lockon NBA that’s linkedin.com lockon NBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for abc1 news and like I said in the introduction man it feels like every single year whether it’s the trade deadline whe whether it’s the off season Kyle kosma is a name that is discussed for the Sacramento Kings to potentially go out and trade for last offseason Kyle kma was discussed as someone to for the Kings to potentially go out and sign in free agency ultimately the Kings did not come to an agreement with kma we don’t know how much negotiation was actually going on we do believe that there was high interest on both sides but nothing actually happened the Kings went the route of bringing Harrison Barnes back Kyle kumma signed his very team-friendly contract with the Washington Wizards well the Wizards are in kind of a weird State and Brandon Scott from locked on Wizards is going to help us truly identify what route the Wizards are going whether it’s to try to get back to some kind of contention for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference or going the full rebuild route and if so how Avail Kyle available Kyle kosma is but like I said in the introduction too the Kings I I I’m going to present a couple trade packages to Brandon that I think could happen on draft night for the Kings to send in a Kyle kosma deal I’ve discussed these packages before Brandon’s reaction is pretty encouraging if you like the idea of the Kings going out and get K in getting kzo which makes a lot of sense for both sides so please enjoy my conversation with the host of the locked on Wizards podcast Brandon Scott since the beginning of time it feels like Kyle kma and the Sacramento Kings have been connected every single year we have the same conversation is now the time for the Kings to go after kozma and instead of having that conversation again we’ve never had that conversation with Brandon Scott from the locked on Wizards podcast who actually knows what the hell’s going on so Brandon help me figure this situation out is now the right time for the Sacramento Kings to go after Kyle kman that’s not exactly my question for you my question to you is what’s going going on in in in Wizard land and specifically what direction are the Washington Wizards going in in a direction of trying to win and hold on to kozma or maybe moving towards a rebuild and moving on from kozma oh no we’re definitely in a rebuild I mean you know this next season will be officially the second you know year two of a rebuild so right now it’s about Player Development you know if you look at the new front office you know Michael Winger Will Dawkins and Travis schlink you have a front office who has a track record of develop you know winning through the draft hitting through the draft because officially we hit the reset button with you know trading Bradley Bill to Phoenix KP to Boston sub was is working well for Boston right but um you know so we’re definitely in a rebuild so looking at Kyle kma uh me hum you know me personally I think that the biggest reason why he was retained in Washington was he you know his asking price wasn’t met in the offseason so he got a team freely deal and you know he’s provided you know leadership here so um but kind of getting back to the point yeah I mean we’re definitely in a rebuild right now the biggest thing right now is we’re kind of looking at the OKC model which Will Dawkins is formerly from the OKC Thunder so um you know Player Development you know accumulating as many picks as you can and many young talents as you can so so we’ll start here gut feeling is Kyle kmo Washington Wizard come to start a training camp in your in your feeling oh man this uh that I’m about 50-50 and the reason for that is to me I like KY kma I’ve made it know to my channel many times um I think think that you know it’s been really cool watching them become that compete player in DC and they gave him a lot of autonomy as far as his play style you know number one option kind of a co-option with Jordan P but a lot of time he would a play style so I mean good leader done a lot on and off the court but saying that you know looking at his contract very Team friendly contract but it work both sides it’s Team friendly for the Wizards where it doesn’t weigh the Wizards down long term and it’s Team friendly for other teams who you know want to trade for him where you don’t necess have to break the bank to acquire him you know I mean to add him to a team like the S Sacrament Kings where they need that one guy to kind of push him over the top yeah it’s interesting because I’m from my perspective trying to figure out like the direction of the Wizards and and I I thought what you said I thought was the case so it’s glad to be confirmed like it seems like the Wizards are in in a rebuild phase so you wonder how long do you hold on to a player like kzar or a player like Jordan P who have more I guess win now potential and kind of a w a rebuild organization so I’m I’m I’m glad to know that at least my understanding of where the Wizards are from the Sacramento perspective is is at least somewhat accurate somewhat um on par that being said Brandon I I think about the Kyle kosma situation I think okay it doesn’t seem like there’s a desperation in Washington to move on from him so it’s not like the Wizards can be taken advantage of in trade package situations at the same time though we have these reports that the Wizards were asking for multiple firsts at the trade deadline obviously they didn’t get that so no deal got done now the price seems to be going down to just one first round pick again gut feeling your senses on it do you think the Wizards would be willing to move on from kozma if the package they’re getting back is salary match and just one first round pick I mean good question it’s kind of why I see 50-50 because he is a very tradable commodity but also the front office and the organization loves him so you know if you look at he almost got traded to the Dallas Mavericks and the biggest hiccup was they asked him if he wanted to go he you know he famously said he didn’t believe that you know he didn’t like what they had going on with SH I think he kind of wish as you would have yeah I know right but um but I think that you know yeah the askar price I wasn’t a big fan of the two first round picks now you know Dallas to me was the best case scenario to get two first rounders and the biggest and the reason the Wizards didn’t say yes because they didn’t want a bad contract in Grant Williams but to me if you want to hit two first rounders you’re going to have to take a bad contract which which is not a bad thing for a team like the Wizards because again you’re going into year two of rebuild so take you know taking on a bad contract for a first-rounder it’s not a bad deal in my opinion but so the asking price realistically me because I’ve been famous a lot of people got on me in my channel but I just I don’t believe he’s GNA get two first rounders and if he does they’re not going to be lottery picks they’re gonna be in the later half of the first round so best kick scenario really is going to be a first-rounder and probably a young player in return well oh perfect because we’ll we’ll dive a little bit later on into what some trade packages for the could look like because I think there’s two routes that the Kings could go in a trade with with Washington and I’m curious which side you’d prefer but we’ll get into that a little bit later on in the conversation but let’s say you’re on the phone right now with the Kings you’re working for the Wizards organization you’re still trying to get those two first rounders or you’re trying to make the Kings feel like hey kozma’s the guy you’re missing what would you sell the Kings on this is what kozma brings to you this is how kosma can help get the Kings back into the playoffs and and maybe even help them Reach a contendership status you know being a third or fourth option which with a team like the Kings where you know if you have those bad Nights from you to start player you you have a guy in kman who is a Schwin to get 20 points T night so I think that he’s kind of a safety valve for team where you know if you’re Stars if you’re you know if you’re one or two options have a bad night Kyle kman has shown that he can shoulder the low now obviously you know going from Washington where he’s a number one option where you know he shoots the ball and where efficiency has been an issue but he shoots the ball a lot you know when he goes to a team like the Kings or a contender obviously the usage rate is going to go down but he’s shown that he can shoulder the load so I think that’s the biggest thing that he has that Championship DNA you know winning the championship whether you know ha they love in 2020 but you know um he carries that Championship DNA just like Jordan P where you know he knows the little things that get it done as far as winning the championship so I think you know from a leadership standpoint from the standpoint of him just being a consistent threat as a score he can utilize the size you know with a 610 frame he can attack the basket and with that usually clap defense isn’t utilize Shooters on the outside so you know he does a good job being that score you know the biggest thing with the Wizards is efficiency and trying to find ways to get better which is you know this is a question I had for him in exit interviews and I asked him I said look you won a championship you know you’re a leader here in DC what’s that one part of your game that you want to evolve and he said look trying to get the people around me better because you know DC man is all about Player Development you know because we’re gonna get younger this offseason man so do you think his usage rate going down in Sacramento which I agree with you that’s 100% what would happen do you think that would bother him at all or he would recognize the role that he’s playing and his still his significance to the team while not being the onea like he is in Washington do you think that would bother him at all not at all I mean he’s kind of a chameleon like he knew his role in La you know he come over to the Wizards again they gave him a lot of autonomy to kind of be that number one option but he recognizes where his what his role is as far as watching or on you know on another team so he’s a guy again he’s committing he’s going to be able to adapt relatively quickly and I think that yeah usage rate would go down but he is you know he’s called clutch C in DC for a reason because he knows how to hit those significant shots um so you know I think that he would do well in a contender you know I don’t think that would be an issue like I said at the top of the show today’s episode of the lockon Kings podcast is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs when you’re hiring for your small business you want to find quality professionals that are the right Fit for Your Role that’s why you have to check out LinkedIn for hiring so you can post your job for free at linkedin.com loock onba again that’s linkedin.com lockon NBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply all right so let’s talk about some potential Kings and and wizards moves for kozman and and both of these I have kind of two different moves that I’m going to throw at you one at a time and get kind of your feel on it and what you think on it both of them are happening on draft night right to send number 13 to Washington as part of the deal now Washington’s obviously picking what second so Washington already has a fantastic pick now you move back into the lottery again at 13 13 is not the most exciting pick in the world but some big names like uh Donovan Mitchell and uh I mean Kobe Bryant was picked at 13 so it’s not a horrible spot to be but in this draft it’s not the highest of expectations to get a big player but you get two lottery picks in the same draft that’s that’s the pick situation and then there’s two routes that you can go to make salary work one is the route of a package centered around I would say the Wizards pick in either Kevin herder or Harrison Barnes Harrison makes slightly more money is slightly older Kevin herder better shooter younger slightly less money both on pretty Team friendly contracts and maybe a Davon Mitchell or like a sprinklin a filler Talent like a Chris duartte or something like that on top of that potentially and and 13 that’s the first route I’ll give you the second route later but when I I say that does it spark your interest at all absolutely because I believe uh Harrison bars is on expiring contract next year right uh I think he’s got two years left deal he just signed I’m gonna double check and and make sure because he just signed with the Sacramento Kings last offseason yeah three-year deal 54 million he’s got two years left 18 and 19 million okay um look with Davon absolutely because um third because to me here’s the thing about 13 I like 13 and the reason for that is I get a lot of Experts of low on this draft because you’re not going to find somebody in this draft who’s gon to contribute right away and be that starter but for a team like the Wizards man this is perfect because it’s a developmental draft there are Allstars in his draft don’t get it twisted you know it’s all about development right system right environment the right coaching and these guys can be developed at Allstars because you know alexar you know I’m not getting into the names but um so 13 I’m very intrigued because I definitely believe we need to trade back into the lottery you know 13 is perfect you know I looked at 15 Miami my uh Memphis Was Won number nine uh number five Detroit because the um Kyle K was linked to Flint Michigan so you know I think there’s a lot of options for us to move back in So 13 be perfect Harrison bars is intriguing but Kevin herder man you know University of Merlin guy man I gotta bring him home man so herder and Davon Mitchell and the 13th pick absolutely so the other deal that I was mentioning Brandon is a completely different route altogether it’s less about more of a a package built around a win or a a a better Talent or more ready Talent like a Kevin herder and and filler and more based around expiring deals now I’m not I’m not exactly sure what the names are the Kings don’t have too many expiring deals uh on their uh on their upcoming payroll but I’m curious if the Wizards would prefer this route more to a player like Kevin herder who still has multiple years left on his deal or Harrison Barnes who still has multiple years left on his deal the idea is still 13 for kosma and probably a combination of a Trey ly Chris Duarte and I think probably one more player would need to be thrown in there maybe even Davon Mitchell again to get the deal done so it’s less of a bigname talent and more expiring contracts to where the Wizards could potentially get two first round picks this year and then be freed of all this money if these players don’t work out or they’re not interested uh in bringing these players back coming next summer where’s that in the Intriguing list to you knowing this front office and knowing the direction they’re trying to go expiring deals I think would not be an issue I think that getting 13 because like I said I definitely think they need to trade back into the lottery because you know like we were talking about earlier a lot of people don’t like the draft but for the Wizards this is the perfect draft because you can find talent that can be developed they have the atmosphere for development here you know we just today was the press conference for our new head coach Brian ke who if you look at the OKC Thunder with Kevin Durant he was Catamount to that with their development you know see he is a development guy you know in scouting and we had we got we have a no a new revamped scouting department so you know we have the capabilities to not only Scout but to develop young Talent so I think that would be perfect 13 but you know expiring deals I think they would definitely take that man man so which route would you probably go you’re general manager you go for like a Kevin herder esque package or an expiring deals esque package what just pings your interest a little bit more from your Wizards perspective Man From my perspective and knowing the front office man I would go with the expiring deals because I know they right now they don’t only be tied down to a deal you know we got Jordan p and right now we’re Jordan p is kind of a significant case right because while he could very well be part of the future you know we still have to boost his value to if we get to a point we can move him and right now you know with the struggles last year that’s not that’s going to be hard right now so I know they’re they’re hesitant to bring on any more um money man so I would definitely think 13 and expiring deals would definitely get it done makes perfect sense to me now the the next question that comes into my mind is if there in your do you think there would be any hesitancy from the Washington Wizards in this scenario to where they think hey maybe we can do better than that or get more from that from kozma so we’re g to be patient because again if the if this trade is happening it’s happening on draft night maybe they feel after draft night or later on in the draft or something they can get a better deal for kozma or do you think if this offer was was made by Sacramento the Wizards would be pretty quick to accept I would think they would listen now obviously there are you know other picks in his where there’s teams that are looking to win now you know I mean so um you know I already mentioned it you know Memphis you know with J coming back they need to win now mode so and even Detroit a lot of people don’t talk about Detroit man because you know they are they were worse than we are and that says a lot but um you know they are a team where with Kate Cunningham they got to show some progress relatively quickly man because eventually he’s gonna want a contract extension and you know he’s going to and right now would he want to stay there long term so they got to make a move man they got to make a move and I I think that K kma with his connection to Flint Michigan you know with that being a HomeTown kind of thing man I think that that could get it done but so there’s options for the Wizards now I think they would definitely listen because like you said the Kings have always been mentioned for like the last two years for being a destination and and here’s the thing you know if we didn’t make that move sending Russell Westbrook to the Lakers he was very close to going to Sacramento so 100% you know so I think that there’s definitely a fit there because you guys you know I’m I’m I’m kind of admiring from afar man I I watched the kings make came into Capital One Man and you guys got a nice young team man and I think a Kyle kman would kind of send you over the top because you got your work cut out for you too man because the western conference is a monster man but a nice young team that for some reason can’t seem to beat the Wizards when they’re supposed to though we’ve had a handful of Seasons Brandon where Washington’s either come into Sacramento or Sacramento’s gone over to DC and has not been able to beat your squad and and one of the Intriguing extra elements of Kyle kma I don’t know how much you’re aware of this a majority or a large portion of kozma’s 30-point game have come in Sacramento not just against Sacramento in Sacramento I don’t know what it is about the golden one Center I don’t know what it is about playing the Kings and the joke here is he’s auditioning for the team over and over and over again hey come out and get me kozma balls out against Sacramento so I’m tired of him doing it against them and hoping he can do it for him I just don’t know yeah I mean I I don’t know what’s in the water in the visitors locker room man but you know you know like I said kma’s that guy he can hit those big shots man man like I’m very high on kman it’s just my biggest thing is you know the vision of the team you know we need to you know start a youth movement we need to prioritize Player Development you know we got a young core here with Denny AIA who finally broke out Cory kbur Bal kabali uh we see on Johnny Davis but um you know we we got to start becoming younger so don’t get you know don’t get twisted not only with Kyle kma but you know tyus Jones who is under restricted free agent for us this year if we were a contending team I would love kisma because like I said leadership wise you know he’s been great for the locker room for these young guys man you know he does a lot of work out in the community of Washington DC and Flint Michigan uh his his hometown so which in DC is a big thing because you know former players you know John Wall was big in community Bradley Bill was so we we’re definitely the type of organization where we value that so um he’s he’s he’s a good guy man you know like I said um just from the media side of things man you know from the times where I’ve interviewed man I mean he’s a good guy he really is he’s a guy that again wants to be with a rebuilding team which at his age of 28 he’s pretty much sacrificing his his prime to be on the team where he’s pretty much training his replacement you know what I mean so it’s you know it says a lot about him this episode of lockon Kings also brought to you by eBay Motors items only exclusions do apply eBay guaranteed fit only available to us customers last thing for you Brandon’s got nothing to do with the Sacramento Kings but number two overall we we haven’t dove into this draft Too Much from the Kings perspective because 13’s very different from two but just curious who you looking at it too who do you love it to if you were if you’re the guy on draft night with your fingers crossed going I hope we get this dude I hope he’s there who’s that oh man and it’s multiple answers to this man um it’s a good spot too yeah I mean I’ll say whoever Atlanta doesn’t take I mean you know Alex SAR was mentioned um rash is intg you know because he’s played with black kabali in France before so he’s definitely a connection there um I like Donan kinghan you know we need a rim protector man so I you I say this kind of hard because it depends on what we do later in the draft it what it dictates what we do with the second because if we have the ability to go get a center whether it’s kle we whether it’s a Zack Edy I mean then you hold back on kinging man maybe you go grab a step on Castle maybe a race you know um topage man that knes got me a little concerned man so I don’t know about topage right now man but but you know so look at that two it depends on whether we can trade back in the lottery or we stay pad at 26 you know and that’s kind of where I’m at right now man I’m hoping SAR drops man because I like his potential I mean he can he can play now obviously the offense needs to be fine tune but that the defensive side man he is very versatile he’s I mean he’s got some speed to him you know yeah I like alexar that’s what I’m roll with well if you’re ever interested audience in the Wizards perspective and anything building up to the draft after for the draft free agency if a trade goes down between the Kings and and and the the Wizards of course Brandon has you covered on locked on Wizards all year long Brandon I appreciate you taking the time my man if a trade goes down we’ll we’ll we’ll we’ll come together again and we’ll talk about it we’ll break it down for both sides but I appreciate you taking the time my man and we’ll hopefully do it again yes sir anytime man shout out to Brandon was a pleasure here having him here on the Loon Kings podcast now I want to hear from you do you want the Kings to go out and get kozma if so are you okay with involving the 13th pick in this year’s draft if so it sounds like now I know Brandon doesn’t work for the Washington Wizards so it’s not like his word is law necessarily he’s just sharing his opinions and and from being very well connected to the organization but it sounds like there would be a lot a lot of interest from Washington in 13 and that being the primary piece that they get back plus with some expiring contracts and finally send kozma to Sacramento that is an upgrade available to Sacramento that makes a whole hell of a lot more sense to Brandon Ingram so if you are in that boat if you’re for it or against it tell me why let me know on Twitter atmad George sack you can email me Matt Georg Sports gmail.com or of course you can leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below appreciate your support here as always on the locked on Kings podcast I’m looking forward to seeing and reading your comments about a potential kozma trade I’ll talk Please just take a look at tristan da silva’s game 🙏🙏
My boy Sam is really good at basketball, the kings should draft him instead
Wow! Expiring deals for Kuz. I would take that in a heartbeat, but I would be really reluctant to trade Trey Lyles. He's so good when we play small ball. I like the first trade better for the Kings…..Huerter, Mitchell and the 13th pick tbh.
What if we trade #13 to Knicks for #24&25? Take the best available.
Hi Matt ✌️
Easy trade! Our defense was 9th with Barnes starting and Kuzma is better than him. Loosing monk is bad but I think barnes would be aggressive off the bench and the sign Melton to a MLE our bench would be good either way melton, barnes, and Lyle’s to go with our starters
Please make this trade Monte except I don’t want to include Davion. Expiring route works with Trey, Sasha, and Duarte or going Huerter or HB with 1st and future 2nds
Absolutely
Kuzma should already be here.. do this deal before someone else does
Kuzma is a player that clearly doesn't care about winning. He's a bumb
Personally, I think getting some cool tattoos on the king's roster is exactly what we need. Kuzma will definitely be up there as one of the coolest guys on the roster along with Monk. Nerds do NOT win championships.
I would like him on our team.
They want the Mystics.
As a DC native & Washington Wizards fan I like Brandon (Locked On), but I disagree. I’ve listened to Will Dawkins and he is not going to trade Kyle Kuzma for the 13th pick in this weak draft.
Kuzma has multiple suiters to include OKC, Spurs, Raptors Detroit, Lakers, Warriors, Miami etc… Several of whom have better first round options in this year’s draft.
If the Kings want Kuzma be prepared to outbid several other teams. IMO, This is what the Washington Wizards front office is banking on to meet their asking price.
If they don’t get two first rounds, they’ll likely go with the best offer. I don’t believe that the 13th pick will make the cut.
Edey. Gonna improve the team.
