at 957 the game has hosted Warriors postgame shows followed the team for a couple seasons was on site of the war warriors NBA championship run in Boston Chuck great to have you on the show we’re going to cover three big topics today Klay Thompson will he stay will he go and should he stay or should he go whether or not he does the Warriors need a secondary score that’s the second big question mark heading into next season Steph needs help who should it be is it someone on this roster also there’s a little bit of a conversation going on with Draymond Green any surprise on social media 2017 Warriors versus the 2004 Pistons that’s the question and we’ll touch on that later on in the show Chuck first NBA Finals game one coming up on Thursday Boston Celtics taking on the Dallas Mavericks you were in Boston when the Warriors took on the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals and I know those fans did not treat you right as Warriors fans should we be cheering against Boston because of those horrible Celtics fans I mean beaut is in the eye of the beholder right Celtics fans are uh they’re they’re great if you’re from the Northeast and like that style of fan but it’s it’s completely different than I was used to out in the Bay Area I was telling you kylin I was doing a live shot out there and fans are throwing sigs at me it was uh it was some serious stuff in enemy territory they don’t mess around with their Sports in Boston but it’s good to be on the show you had a cigarette thrown at you on live TV correct yeah yeah it was the worst report ever but the good news is not a single human being was watching kpix on purpose at that time because the the game had already started uh they had yourself short maybe you know what I mean the Casual fans forgot when the game someone taking a nap that was pregame and before the game and or they watching their news before turning over to the game hey you never know either way you had to go through it uh just to cover that Series so we’re gonna say go Mavs that’s where I’m going to go with this Nick angstead the channel manager for the locked on NBA podcasts is our locked on Mavs host awesome guy and so we’re going to go with yeah go Nick um we’re going to cheer for them all right so we are less than a month away from free agency though the madness is going to get underway in less than four weeks that also means less than four weeks left in Klay Thompson’s current Warriors contract bringing it back to the Warriors will he stay or will he go or maybe the better question right now is how hard are the Warriors going to work even to resign him negotiations can start at 6 PM Eastern on June 30th want to mention now the Athletics Anthony Slater released an article on Friday five days ago depending on when you’re listening to this May 31st and he said according to Anthony Slater with the athletic as the decision on his future near there there has been no notable movement from either side towards a resolution according to League sources and that’s between Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors in terms of negotiating some type of New Deal uh there was some additional context from the article that I want to Pro provide if I can pull up the quote here’s another little nugget the Warriors maintain a desire to retain Thompson at the right price once other aspects of their roster ret tooling get clarified but they Haven an exactly been beating down his door to work out the framework for an extension which can be signed at any time in turn the 34-year-old Thompson appears ready to test free agency Waters exploring external options for the first time in his career 13-year NBA veteran has been with the Warriors throughout the entirety of his career is ready to test the waters in free agency to me that says there is a very good chance the Warriors and Klay Thompson part ways but what do you take away from hearing that news well if you think there’s a really good chance right now you uh you hop on the FanDuel sports book and you you you find the odds that he goes to the field because as of right now last I checked I think he was still minus 150 odds so real good odds that he comes back to the Golden State Warriors but teams like the Orlando Magic have creeped into the mix if they have the money to throw at him and we’ve heard that Klay Thompson would be interested in playing for a contender someone that is a serious basketball team he’s not going to the Detroit Pistons the Detroit Pistons aren throwing Klay Thompson the bag but if he gets a decent offer from a team like let’s say the Orlando Magic for the sake of the argument now Klay Thompson big water guy loves the boat Orlando it’s about an hour away from the closest beach in either coco or Daytona so geography there I don’t know if clay would uh rather get out of the bay and go down to Orlando um with that being said the Warriors need to retool the roster a little bit this is um a little bit both parties a bit a little bit and both parties here can bit both parties could pull the rug from under the other like Klay Thompson could in his mind right now be thinking I want to come back to the Warriors I’ll take some sort of a pay cut to come back to finish my career in the Bay Area and next thing you know Golden State could say we don’t want to give you that pay cut we just we we want to move on completely or vice versa so I think A lot’s going to be uh said over the next four or five weeks all I do know is that um we can guess we can start guessing what he’s going to do that’s what uh that’s what June is all about okay here’s my guess I feel like Klay Thompson’s on the way out I also feel like the Warriors should try to retain him for the right price the big thing for me is how much is Klay Thompson going to be asking also want to provide a little bit of context to people listening or watching back on May 6 sham shiria with the athletic reported that the Orlando Magic and Klay Thom and have mutual interest so that’s where those odds of him going to the magic have suddenly skyrocketed since early May entering free agency that is what Shams was reporting is that there was mutual interest there the Orlando need shooting like that to me is their biggest area they need to address are still a major hole in their lineup so it makes sense they also have a very young team so you bring in an experienced vet a good locker room piece in Klay Thompson good I I don’t know exactly you know where he fits in in terms of leadership just because of the way this Warriors team has been like he hasn’t left the Warriors so I don’t know what that looks like with him working with youngsters with a different organization but still you’re adding in a veteran he knows what he’s doing he holds him to a high standard um he loves to be around his teammates so I think that to me it makes sense um also it was reported by Shams in December contract negotiations between Thompson and the Warriors leading into last season so this was before 2023 2024 the Warriors and Klay Thompson reportedly were in discussions about an extension and they apparently stalled over salary and length of an extension or at least the length of what the extension would be and he was told the warriors were offering Thompson a two-year deal in the range of $48 million before this last 20123 24 season so you’re looking at around 24 million a year and Klay Thompson turned it down again this is according to Sham shiria and his reporting uh back in December is when he first put this out there to me the Warriors cannot be paying more than 24 million a year for Klay Thompson based on the performance he put together this past season and honestly these past two seasons and to be all you know in all honesty he’s not the same player he was post injuries I don’t think he can expect it to be because he went through just completely like body altering horrible injuries when you talk about an Achilles tear and ACL tear I don’t think you can expect that I don’t think that he is an all NBA guard I don’t think that’s any secret I mean I shouldn’t say I don’t think he is he’s not um based on his numbers as of late I don’t think you can pay him this kind of money to me if you keep Klay Thompson it’s got to be role player money and not Hall of Famer money what do you think about the price tag then you just said it he’s he’s he’s walking he’s probably gonna go somewhere else I mean if they’re not gonna or let’s say this if he does come back to Golden State it’s GNA be because he’s taken a a a big time pay cut because if he’s taking that same offer that you just um that you just alluded to right there he’s he’s taken that offer with another team I don’t think Golden State’s going to give him that money because quite frankly you talked about it at the beginning of the show a lot bit the Golden State Warriors need to retool the roster and in order to do that you got to free up some space got to free up some money um Klay Thompson is no longer the robin to to Steph Curry’s Batman who is that Robin can they find that Robin um would they potentially go out and sign a massive free agent where would they get the money to do so uh there’s so many questions that need to be answered um but the big one that I have to to counter at you is if if Klay Thompson is a part of this team next year and they’re paying him that sort of money that we just talked about I mean where do they find a trade or money to retool the roster and find that that secondary score that that Steph Curry needs next to him because like you said I mean Klay Thompson incredible player um still has a lot left in the tank definitely on the back nine but he’s not on whole 16 he’s still got a lot left in the tank and it could be with another franchise right now and it has nothing to do with uh with Clay I mean he’s in his mid-30s and this is what happens um when you get into your mid-30s as a basketball player with that being said he’s just if he’s put in the position where he has to be you know 2018 clay it’s not going to happen so Warriors need to find someone else um could they keep clay and find someone else and would clay be an incredible piece to have absolutely but how are you going to get that done it just seems like it’s one or the other you kind of move on from the uh the core or at least from the the The Big Three As We Know It And add someone else or um yeah I mean there’s a lot that goes under I’m confused on myself right now because I’m thinking inter internally like how are they going to make this work and I I I don’t see them coming back the price tag is going to be a huge thing because they do need to free up some money to sign a big free agent I think other teams are just big free agent signing is needed but the secondary score thing is also something we need to dive into much more coming [Music] up all right well Chuck you kind of mentioned it early on in the do want to touch real quickly though back to some of the points about Klay Thompson and what the money thing looks like I do think the Warriors need to sign a big free agent I think there needs to be a massive shakeup it’s been reported across multiple media Outlets that is something this front office is looking to do they are willing to shake up the core it’s been out there it’s been said by M multiple outlets and I think that could be the new reality and I think that could be the way this team shapes up for the upcoming Seas it’s got to be it’s got to be the core I mean it’s it’s done we saw it I mean if if if if it wasn’t done after the uh the Sacramento series and then the um who did they they lost to the Lakers Lakers when they lost to the Lakers I mean that was kind of like all right they’re no longer Kings on the Block this is the first time they’ve all been healthy and and haven’t won the NBA Championship at least without Draymond Green you know being suspended that was where it’s like all right you know this thing’s coming down but let’s run it back let’s trade Jordan P let’s see if Chris Paul can come in be the missing piece yeah and you know kaminga grows up maybe the Moody steps up too and we’ll see and what we saw was it it wasn’t really close and I know there are a lot of variables that go into it it wasn’t a complete team through the throughout the entire season but the makeup as we know it where Steph Curry’s your clear number one um Klay Thompson is your number two guy for the most part he’s the robin of the Batman and then Draymond Green is Draymond Green and everyone else chips in that’s not going to work anymore the league is caught up to it there are just better players better teams Golden State’s a little bit older the only constant that this team has right now to me is that Draymond Green a is really important and B Steph Curry’s one of the best players in the NBA those two constant everything else we will have to see what do they do but when it comes to Klay Thompson I mean it’s it’s no love lost like everyone in the Bay Area loves Klay Thompson incredible player it just may be better for both parties to move on I I mentioned that Orlando fit earlier does it make more sense for both parties right now so sometimes you have to uh let the emotions go and think what’s best for both sides um could the grass be greener on the other side for both teams the question then becomes like you were saying free agency who do you replace Klay Thompson with um you obviously got to get someone that that’s better you kylin think that it’s got to be a similar type of player to to help space the floor and someone that can knock down threes but could it be a different type of you know score that that isn’t necessarily the uh the next Splash brother to add into the mix but you try to just change things up you know I mean Steph Curry Draymond Green incredible basketball players maybe you could throw thow a new style out there and um they can you know figure it out in a life without Klay Thompson maybe not new style that’s that’s a stretch I mean they’re still the wars right they’re going to be moving off the ball they going to run their motion offense get you’re going to try to get Steph open uh they’ll find moments for the pick and roll I think they should have run the pick and roll way more this past season that’s a whole another topic one more tidbit about Klay Thompson because we’re talking money so he just came off or he’s wrapping up a fiveyear about $190 million contract he was averaging an annual salary of just under 38 million a year but this past year 23 24 season his salary was more than 43 million a year making him the 12th highest paid player in the league in 2023 24 Clay Thompson the 12th highest paid player in the league averaging less than 18 points per game um and I think that yes he’s still a good Defender I don’t think he’s quite where he was prior to the injuries uh his three-point percentage is down wasn’t the worst of his career but still a good three-point shooter I’m just saying he’s been 40 plus per throughout his career consistently uh he was around 38 five and a half percent um 38 and a half percent I mean but so numbers not where they were to be the 12th highest paid player in the league last year to me is Blasphemous um he has to take a major pay cut if he’s going to stay with the Golden State Warriors and I don’t know if he’s going to be willing to do that like are they going to be able to see eye to eye about what he’s worth how long of a contract cont he wants like I just don’t know that I see that happening and to your point I think like a bad relationship like sometimes or maybe a good relationship that go sour both sides kind of see it coming and agree to part ambly before things get messy um you know I I think that there’s something to be said for that and everyone leaving on good terms would I like to see the big three all retire Warriors like I think that would be incredible but is that the reality of the situation the Warriors I think should be saving up that money to try to sign a big big number two who and what does that number two need to look like uh you touched on what my point is I think the Warriors need another shot Creator around Steph they need another outside shooter around Steph because the one thing that Klay Thompson will always bring to the table and let’s say he does come back he’s gonna have to come back in a different role if he does return I liked him coming off the bench late in this season but if Klay Thompson does come back he still does have that gravity and that is something that even when he’s not at the peak of his career he brings he keeps defenses honest um he just was too inconsistent and he’s been too inconsistent but I think that they need a secondary score I think they need a secondary shot Creator I think with Steph you need another guy who can shoot um because you need to keep those defenses honest you want to spread the floor and you want to open up space for sta otherwise he’s just going to be under the gun uh you know away from the basket and you need someone else who can shoot the basketball so that’s the reason why I think a secondary score needs to look like that something you said to me before we start recording that I want to ask you about in just a moment is whether or not you think Jonathan kaminga could be that guy I think it’s an interesting prospect there were spurts of that this past season where he was averaging more than 20 per game for a stretch of games Midway through the season everyone’s like wow is this the Breakthrough um but I just don’t know that he’s consistently ready to be that guy well going back to the the comments about Klay Thompson there’s just in no world should he be making more money right now than than Pascal cakam or Demar D rozan in my opinion with the you know yeah with the uh the abilities that he has in this day and age with that being said he’s still G to demand a lot of money on the open market especially teams that are willing to overpay I mean he’s a great asset to have let’s not forget that it’s more a matter of just it’s not even time to move on from him it’s just time to move on from that core being being like the essential quarterer team could they be you know all slide into to different roles minus Steph Curry and um bring in you know a free agent like a a Demar D rozan or a um let’s let’s get crazy now LeBron James or Paul George or or one of those big-time scores and have those other two on the roster I mean could it work yes financially no there there’s absolutely no way that that that those things can coexist so it’s just a balance right now in my opinion of um just figuring out how uh how all this is going to line up yeah I mean it’s it’s a big question it’s something that’s going to be under debate uh you know as the summer progresses and free agency really starts to open up by number two behind Steph Curry the Warriors need a secondary score um you think Jonathan kaminga is an option or could be that guy I don’t think he’s consistent enough yet um what do you see realistically being the look of the Warriors in 2024 25 do you think someone on the roster has the ability to step up in that position or do we need to go the direction of not just signing a free agent but a big-time free agent yeah I mean it it really comes down to what are the plans with Klay Thompson here a that’s massive um and then you know aside from that what is their take on Jonathan kega still 21 years of age Talent is not an issue um I mean I don’t even think it’s a a measure of potential at this point his potential means he haven’t done anything yet like Jonathan kaminga has done a lot it’s just a matter of is he going to be a really good basketball player or is he going to be a co-s superstar because the Warriors do need a co-s superstar look at every team that’s won an NBA championship over the last 10 years there may be an outlier but from LeBron and Kyrie to obviously the Splash Brothers throwing Kevin Durant as well to um I mean look at the teams in the championship right now you’re talking Jason Tatum Jaylen Brown you’re talking Kyrie and Luca there’s always that pair of guys and if if Jon kaminga is is not that guy that’s okay but you got to know that right now right for your preparation for the upcoming season if you have serious thoughts about winning an NBA championship it’s not gonna be clay I mean he’s just not the same player that he once was and he’s not um the number two that’s gonna get it done so you look at some of the potential free agents and uh two guys that have player options Paul Paul George LeBron James I mean here’s the issue I’m looking at all these names and it’s like LeBron Paul George James Harden Demar D rozan they just none of them seem like a a clear fit and I know that it’s it’s really hard to say that LeBron James wouldn’t fit in with your team he seemingly is fit in everywhere except for um the Lakers last year and and a few of his Lakers years but aside from that takes the team to the finals that’s what he’s done for almost two decades now but you go down that list and it’s like all right who is going to step in right now a 34 year old demard DE rosan or 38 39-year-old LeBron James like how old do the Warriors want to get here if you’re moving on from Klay Thompson a lot of it is due to just age alone right you’re trying to get a little bit younger you’re trying to get a younger Superstar if that is the case I mean potentially a guy like Pascal cakam could help the team um does he fit stylistically I do not know but aside from that like what what are you gon to go bring D’Angelo Russell back we’ve tried that it didn’t work um you’re not draft in anyone this upcoming season unless you make some major trade so it’s through trades or it’s through some of those names that I just uh mentioned but a lot of it has to do with we saw what what one or two players can do to a team like the Indiana Pacers you know take you from out of the playoffs to Eastern Conference Finals like it it just takes a a little little bit of a roster shakeup um with a superstar like a Steph Curry to to fix things um but it’s you got to make a lot of Right Moves In this situation okay I don’t know if there’s an easy button an easy fix regardless of how much money you throw out there like James Harden or one of those guys like sure it sounds great but I just I don’t think that’s going to get the job done okay so like what’s the over under on the age of the free agent Warriors should add so first of all I just want to say I don’t think there’s anyone on the Warriors roster right now who’s ready to be the number two I love Jonathan kinga’s development he’s not there yet I think the free agent signing needs to be a big signing and I know like the Chris Paul coming to the Warriors and trading Jordan pool all this stuff was like a big deal but like I just like I still don’t get the Chris Paul move like why add someone who’s literally like in the twi like you said just old like I old by NBA standards okay not old old um but what about Zack LaVine this is a name that’s been tossed around a little bit I’ve seen Warriors fans talk about him he is 29 so that’s why I asked like what’s the over under like is under 30 considered like not too old I feel like it it shouldn’t be the problem is he obviously has had so many injury issues that that’s the biggest concern for problem is he’s under contract there yes but there have been reports and rumors out there that both Zach and the Bulls are wanting to figure out a way to amly part ways and that would not be a free agent signing but that could be someone that they look to Target in some type of trade situation now when you start to look at targeting bigger trade you know assets you have to look at what assets you’re going to move um you know big part of that transaction is who are the will Warriors willing to to let go and that’s where you start saying like hey are you willing to let some of the young pieces go a Jonathan kaminga is a name that’s come up a ton a Brandon psky I’ve seen like hey in some of these trade proposals or conversations like would the Warriors be willing to let go of some of their young pieces to bring in a bit and that’s like been the ever you know lasting debate with this team um but Zack LaVine and the Bulls to me like I don’t understand why he even resigned but I just there have been reports out there that you know that marriage could be is coming to an end I just again I don’t think swapping out Zack LaVine for Klay Thompson’s gonna fix the issue I think it’s it’s rooted from the bottom down you got to do a lot of things right and to me it really does stem on on how much they’re going to rely on Jonathan kaminga to be you know a secondary scorer to Klay or to Steph Curry excuse me this upcoming season if he can take a massive leap and capitalize on on some of the the natural abilities that he has like he can be a superstar I know consistently he hasn’t shown it yet but 21 years of age how many players have we seen in the NBA just bust out around this time right after they’re you know old enough to have their first sip of O they they they bust out and they um they they finally harness all that Talent so if if he can get it done this year Jonathan kaminga it it completely changes the complexion then you don’t have to go out and get a Zack LaVine you can build in a different way but yeah they do need that that co-s Superstar standing next to Steph Curry is Zack LaVine that co-s Superstar that’s goingon to get it done I’m just kind of partial because like when you see a guy like a Zack LaVine playing next to d rozan and and vich and you know multiple Allstars on a team and they’re just going nowhere consistently starts sense it starts to make you wonder like why are we gonna go pluck a guy that’s on a team that’s not winning basketball games I don’t know and that’s not the right way to look at it because sometimes all it takes is a new system new faces around them and um a new fan base cheering them on to really uh to spark a jolt and they have somewhat of a resurge at age 29 so it’s just it’s so hard to predict um this time of the year but the the free agency like going out and trading for Chris Paul last year like that would have been awesome in 2017 you know maybe even 2020 that would have been awesome but um it just seemed a little too late and some of these potential free agent signings like a Paul George or something like that it it may just seem like a little too late in my opinion and they got to find a way to go young I just don’t know how they do it um unless it involves a trade then if they if it involves a trade they do have some pieces to where they can um throw together some enticing packages for some of the teams out there I would think we’re gonna have to do there’s going to be multiple episodes coming up here on lock on Warriors about some of the trade options what some of those proposa proposed trades are free agents that they could possibly Target uh the draft’s coming up too the Warriors do have a second round pick not that that’s any to write home about but hey they did pick up Trace Jackson Davis in the second round you can add in a nice youngster not that the Warriors need more youngsters but we’re going to be breaking all that down here un locked on Warriors in the upcoming weeks I want to touch on a quick story I teased at the top of the show just before we go here uh Draymond Green is involved a little back and forth with the former NBA champion Rasheed Wallace uh you know no shock that Draymond Green’s involved in a back and forth supposedly it’s all funloving it’s all you know all gravy but the buzz is about a hypothetical match up between the 2004 Detroit Pistons and the 2017 Golden State Warriors if you go to Draymond Green’s Twitter page he like quote tweeted Rasheed Wallace recently talking on his own podcast it’s called Sheed and Tyler um about what a matchup like that would look like I haven’t listened to the whole thing and I don’t even really know where this all started and originated but dond green quote tweeted him basically saying like we would crush you guys because Wallace said in the podcast that the Detroit Pistons of 2004 would crush the 2017 Warriors both these teams NBA champions um and Draymond had some strong words uh in response very quickly Charlie I get exhausted from some of these comparing different teams from different eras because the game has changed but the Detroit Pistons of 2004 were scoring like 70 a game I mean would you see that matchup realistically being in the Warriors favor well they held the Lakers with uh Kobe and Shaq A team that had won like what three or four championships back in the early 2000s they were holding them to like 60 points so that’s not happening in today’s day and age it’s too hard to to match everything up and wonder but when you’re talking about one of the arguments was Rasheed Wallace is like who’s gonna guard who’s gonna guard taan Prince and someone was like Kevin Durant he’s like he a guarding Tay and it’s just like dude like taan Prince great player shout out Kentucky Wildcats don’t get me wrong but I mean taan Prince isn’t lighting up the world in this era you know I don’t I don’t need to compare eras to know that taan Prince good basketball player but I think KD and Klay Thompson and some of these other guys could hold their own but with that being said that was a good Pistons team I mean they took down that Lakers Squad with Gary pton Carl Malone may have been on that team and they took him down 4-1 in the championship I think they went to a couple championships if they didn’t win a couple I think they lost the Spurs either the next year the year before but that Pistons team man they were uh they were dangerous now I mean they weren’t the biggest team in the world they had you know Ben Wallace man in the four or the five at like six foot n but they were tough and um they would have given loon some problems down low but comparing Aras leave Lon alone okay leave cavon Looney alone Golden State Warriors Legend no no one was messing with
