look I could sit here and break down what’s gonna happen and we’ll do that a little bit in the third segment but to get you ready for the NBA Finals finish this episode first but I cannot recommend more listening to our friends at locked on Celtics and locked on Mavericks you know we say this all the time about the local experts who know their team best I can tell you for a fact nobody knows the Boston Celtics better than John caralis of lockon Celtics and nobody knows the Mavericks better than Nick angad of locked on Mavericks so as we get ready for the NBA Finals as we get ready uh for this series which should be a pretty good one those are going to be your best resources I I will give my T my 10 cents on the series and what I think is going to happen here at the end of the show we will go over what’s going on in these games throughout the course of the series I I I I think it’s I do think it’s important that we at least stay aware of what’s going on in the rest of the league um as we get to you know especially as we hit this point because offseason stuff is fun and we’ll keep talking about offseason stuff here um including on tomorrow’s episode but all eyes should be on the championship at the end of the day our goal is to win a champion championship and so I want to spend today’s episode both giving you reasons to be interested in both of these teams I’m not going to convince you to Che for the Celtics like we’re magic fans there’s a lot about the Celtics we don’t like we’ll get to them in a minute um but we’re all after the trophy and we all can learn something from being able to lift that trophy from the team that is able to lift that Trophy and I think let’s start with the Mavericks Dallas is a very different team in Orlando they obviously have their Superstar on Luka donic they were in the Conference Finals two years ago but that is a team that is completely different than the one that made the Conference finals last year and we’ll get into it a little bit with the Celtics as well but it’s going to be important to remember that timely trades matter that Dallas was able to rescue themselves they took a big risk on Kyrie Irving obviously and it’s turned out to work but the reason why Dallas is here is because of the trades they made at the deadline adding PJ Washington adding Daniel Gafford helped Elevate that team and prepare them for this playoff jourm and as you know we do the playoff lessons we do these you know I want to learn from the teams that are lasting longer than the magic especially the magic are like Dallas and like Boston at some point going to have to make some difficult decisions and yes take some risks like the Mavericks the Celtics also took some major risks and and and I’ll talk about how continuity is still a big factor in this series and a big factor for these teams in our next segment but Boston had everything working they’ve been to five Conference Finals since 2018 it’s it’s a pretty incredible run that the Celtics have been on they’ve yet to win a championship and they assessed that after they lost to Miami in last year’s playoffs they assessed that and said we need to changes and while there was a big push and I want to talk about this in a little bit a big push to split up Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum ultimately they decided to do something perhaps a little bit more difficult they gutted their role players Robert you know Drew um Marcus SM the heart and soul of that Celtics team was traded for christops porzingis and while porzingis was coming off a very very good year with the Wizards there were a lot of doubts especially with how his time in Dallas ended there were a lot of doubts about how much more he could give this team and then obviously Boston pounced on perhaps the most important deal that they made getting Drew holiday just before the season that was a truly transformational trade a truly truly different thing that this team did and Boston obviously with good coaching Boston obviously had the best record in in the league not just Eastern Conference best record in the league and they are a juggernaut I like John hollinger’s article in the athletic um I believe it was a week ago now where he talked about is this a new age of parody or is this the beginning of a new Dynasty because the Celtics were just so much better than everyone they’re still so young Al Horford’s really the only quote unquote old player on the team they’re still so young they’ve won a lot already and there’s plenty of opportunity for them to win more we could be looking at a new Dynasty but it’s important to remember that dynasty was also partially built on these risky trades if there has been a criticism of Jeff welman if there has been an item that has frustrated fans when it comes to Jeff welman it’s that he does appear to overvalue continuity or it seems that way at every turn what feels like he should have made a bold move or made a move to shore something up he trusts what he has I would argue that that has been the right decision so far I would argue that the Magic’s decision to stand Pat with their team at this year’s trade deadline despite the glaring need for shooting and all the things we discussed at the deadline that it worked out okay the magic knew the soft part in their schedule was coming up they dominated it they went from three games over 500 to 47 wins it’s 47 and 35 so 12 games over 500 got the five seed went to the playoffs mission accomplished I would also argue with you that Jeff welman is not afraid to make that bold trade it’s a different kind of trade that Jeff welman made back in 2021 but the trade of Nicole L vuvi Evan forier and Aaron Gordon all on the same day set the table for what we have now it trading Nico vuvi early selling early on him he obviously went late on Evan forier they got nothing for Evan forier Boston wasn’t really H Boston ended up not being super happy with it they got nothing for Evan forier and they got very little in the end for Aaron Goron although I would argue Gary Harris was a solid player for the magic they still got that draft pick coming in 2025 RJ Hampton didn’t work out obviously but that nicolea vuich trade set the table for the magic to be where they are now to be at the pce now it’s obviously a very different trade than what the trade that the magic are probably going to have to make at some point in their development they’re gonna have to make a decision on someone when they get stuck in the playoffs like Boston did they’re going to get stuck and they’re going to have to make a decision on someone that’s what Dallas did with Kristof porzingis and and obviously wasn’t working and I believe a year after that they went to the Conference Finals as well it’s what Dallas decided to do knowing that Luca and Kyrie were starting to find their groove and they needed that last piece to get them over the hump not only did they get a versatile post player in PJ Washington they went out and got another rim protector in Daniel Gafford and now they got one of those two I think gaff a free agent so they probably don’t have both of them but now they have those in reserve to make another trade down the road it’s all about setting that table that’s what a lot of this offseason’s been about or a lot of our discussion in this offseason has been about is the magic need to spend to set their T to not only improve themselves this year but set their table for the future as we look at how these two teams were built those strategic deals those risks that those teams took that those franchises took paid off and clearly they have paid off in a major way to get us ready for the NBA Finals but I want to make this clear there’s a lot more interesting on for the ma from the Magics perspective in the Celtics and how they’re built we’ll talk about why stability still won the day for the Celtics despite the big moves that they made this offseason we’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of lockdown magic is brought to you by our friends over at game time look here in Orlando it is the summer of soccer I don’t know if for you the best of the lockon podcast Network on the biggest stories in the Sports World 247 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app it’s part of lockon podcast Network your team every day so if you haven’t tell I don’t I don’t think this NBA Finals is an ideological Battle of Bot versus grown naturally or what whatever it is like the Celtics made some pretty big trades that have set them up to be this Juggernaut of a team and to finally get to the NBA finals and finally be favored to win an NBA Finals meanwhile Dallas has been kind of shuffling through Supporting Cast characters and supporting players around Luka donic before they finally found the right one there’s no one right way to win at the end of the day the right way to win have a really good player surround him with good players that will help you win it’s it’s it’s there’s more to it obviously because there’s a lot of teams with good players that fall short Phoenix La um both La um but it’s it’s not that difficult of a formula magic at Paulo they have fron they have Jaylen we’re looking to add another really high level player this summer there’s going to be a trade probably to consolidate and add another high level player if things keep breaking the right way or things keep going the right way for this magic team that’s the nature of the league that’s how this works and I think I’m not going to convince you to cheer for the Boston Celtics I’m not the magic at Celtics have a long history they have a bitter history this is not a team we cheer for we Clos the garden we’re happy to say that we’re two- one against them and the magic are two- one against them in playoff series magic fans hate how Celtics fans invade the arena one of the biggest wins of the season was that inseason tournament win we’re we’re not you know there’s I think there’s a lot of respect between the teams and and I know a lot of Celtics people are really respectful of what the maner building uh and and understand that hey this is a magic team that has some interesting things happening with them but look cheer for the Dallas Mavericks um Daryl Armstrong is an assistant coach on the Mavericks uh there’s only two magic alumni involved in this series darl Armstrong’s an assistant with the Mavericks Emil Jefferson’s an assistant with the Celtics da is our guy da is everyone’s guy everyone loves darl Armstrong tier for the Mavericks just for him but let me make a little argument for the Celtics because like I said I’ve had you know I’ve been on John cares’ podcast with lockon Celtics we’ve done crossovers about this series and about the similarities between the magic and the Celtics and if you’re looking for a sign that the magic are on the right path that the magic are a team that can win a championship the Boston Celtics are kind of a model for what the magic are building let me explain this a there’s a greater sense of continuity with that Celtics team whether it’s sticking with Joe Missoula and and hiring him to replace e yoka to keep stability with that coaching staff um obviously there were some Growing Pains last year because udoka was such a popular coach but that team knows what’s expected of them that team has relationships that are built that’s helped that team grow and get really really good the other part of it is that debate of Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown all the national media wanted to make it a debate wanted to pit those two players together ask if those two players can play together successfully and clearly now they’re in the NBA Finals clearly now they’re about to win a champion they’re not about I don’t want to say that I don’t want to go that far yet but they’re on the doorstep of winning a championship of justifying their existence as a Duo and silencing a lot of critics in the process this is the reality of the league by the way it it it’s not surprising everyone thinks you know the way just conversations about the league work everyone questions and doubts you until you do it until you win a championship Michael Jordan was considered an empty stats score until he won his first title until he got pass the Detroit Pistons and won that title the story for the the reason why I’m very compelled by the story of the Celtics it’s not just because everyone likes to make the comparison between Paulo B Caro and fron vogner to the Jaylen Brown Jason team two very similar Wing you know two kind of similar scoring Wing players trying to play together and play off each other it’s not easy there are not a lot of examples of teams led by two Wing players like them winning championships so if Boston wins the champ ionship this year that feels like proof of concept that the magic can win a championship that’s what we’re talking about here that’s why Boston is so fascinating to me because if Boston can do it that opens the door to Orlando being the next evolution of what Boston’s doing because Boston you know Derek white and Drew holiday are more traditional point guards than Marcus Smart was so point guards still matter but if Boston can do it with two primary scores on the wings then Orlando can do it and Orlando’s evolution is they got two guys who are six foot1 that are much harder to match up with than a 67 J Jaylen Brown and a 6869 Jason table Orlando could very well be the evolution of what Boston is but I want to make this point clear too it takes time it takes failure it takes learning hard lessons and front offices having to stare those lessons in the face and decide can we stick this out and believing that they can because when you look at this and I think this is the biggest honestly this is the biggest lesson of this postseason of who’s going to win the title Jason Tatum has been to the Conference Finals five times since he entered the league in 2018 it’s been one two three four five six seven seasons his seventh season is his first chance to win a championship or his first it could be his first championship he got there in his Fifth Season despite all that success Luca donic a prodigy one of the five best players in the league it’s in his one two three four five six season and competing for his first championship it takes time even with great players it takes a measure of patience a measure of understanding that there is growth that there are questions that need to be answered adjustments that need to be made to get to a championship the lesson of the Denver Nuggets winning the championship last year should be that it is a journey a journey filled with failure where your faith is tested and you got to make the Right Moves trading Gary Harris or Aaron Goron was critical to the Nuggets winning a championship but sticking with Jamal Murray and nicolea yic and going through those ups and downs was critical to just like the ups and downs Dallas has gone through just like the ups and downs Boston has gone through just like the ups and down Orlando will go through we’re going to have playoff successes maybe we can call this season a playoff success success but guess what now the magic have tasted a little bit of it we expect them to get to the second round how are the magic gonna react if they lose in the first round again this year what does that mean for this team what does that do for Jeff welman what does that does that change conclusions about Pao and France I see everyone already trying to make conclusions about poo and France and guess what I’m not there yet they’re young enough to give them some space again it took Jason Tatum five years to make his first NBA Finals it’ll be SE it’ll be seven if he wins a championship this year Luca donic took six years to reach his first NBA Finals we’re in year two of Pao we’ve got some time and some lessons to learn and to me like someone fun is going to win their first championship this year I I’m a big believer I want the best players to win the Championships I I really do it it impacts Legacy I feel feel happy when young stars get to win championships and this postseason especially has felt like a Changing of the Guard it has felt like the Baton being passed to the Next Generation and I know I talked about this um with Paulo Paulo does feel like he is a part of that generation he does feel like he is a part of that group that is getting this opportunity but it’s going to take some time and if there’s something we can learn from what Luca and Tatum and brown have gone through it’s that it takes time and if we look at this Celtics team it’s not looking in the mirror yet I’m not going to lie I’ll may maybe I’m stretching but I’ve seen people say what the magic are doing is very similar to what the Celtics this the are the seeds of what the Celtics tried to do it’s different but it’s similar and that’s something to watch to see if Boston can finally break through and prove that the magic aren’t crazy to be building the way they’re building okay it’s pick time what I’m watching for in the NBA finals and who I think’s going to win we’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick word for our friends over at prize piit you prize picks pick more pick less it’s that easy okay I I get to put myself out on a limb I get to be laughed at it is time to talk about who’s actually going to win the NBA finals and like I said you will get far more intelligent conversation don’t mean to put myself down I think I know a little bit but you’ll get far more intelligent conversation and Analysis on this series from our friend John corales at locked on Celtics and our friend Nick angad at lockon Mavericks subscribe to them for the week for the next two weeks definitely keep an eye on them this series to me is going to be fascinating because Dallas has proven to be a really difficult matchup and again so much you know it it Dallas’s big weakness was maybe their defense they seem very bod in and very locked in and this is the kind of series that does indeed test the old basketball say if you have the best player the series you have the best chance to win the magic had that a few times with Trac McGrady and he did all he could to carry his team to Victory but obviously you need a little bit more than that and both these teams have a little bit more just just a just a little bit more than what Tracy McGrady had um what Tracy McGrady had uh in his in in his lineups back in the early 2000s but Luca donic is the best player in this series and the difference between Luka donic now and what we saw I think from luuka donic last year is trust he really trusts his teammates in a way that I don’t think we’ve seen Luca trust his teammates and it’s not that he’s a selfish guy it’s not that he he wasn’t there he knows he can score anytime he wants but there’s a freedom to how he’s playing knowing that he has Kyrie Irving to to ease that burden knowing that he has PJ Washington in the corner even trusting A derck Jones Jr to be a good Shooter free agent by the way this summer um don’t think the magic or I don’t think magic fans are super interested in him but there you go there is a lot of trust in the guys around him even a guy like Derek Lively who’s now a lob threat at The Rim Boston’s defense is gonna be geared to trying to stop Kyrie Irving and Luca donic from getting to their spots but the problem is they are mid-range jump Shooters you’ve heard me you probably heard me say this the mid-range game is the Providence of the Stars and both Luca and Kyrie are deadly mid-range Shooters they you give them space you duck under screens you try and play over them they get you on your hip they decide where you’re going to go you are praying it feels like trying to stop them especially the way both are playing right now Boston’s defense has been very good all year I don’t I don’t expect them to be bad this year either but this is going to be a series where it does feel like Dallas is playing pretty free as long as they play together as long as they’re you know the the difference between Dallas and Boston right now is Dallas is going to have to play really well Dallas can’t have an off night not that Boston can have an off night either but Boston can probably win with an A minus game Dallas is going to need four A+ games or four a games maybe an A minus game to give themselves a chance what this series is really going to test is the same thing that has been tested with Boston at every turn this place this post season and one that doubt that Boston has yes passed with flying colors this series is going to turn on whether Boston can stay out of their own way stop playing with their food and win games close obviously they did that really well against Indiana uh so maybe those demons have been exercised the Celtics have been really difficult to close out and Boston has come from behind to score some major victories in this playoffs particularly against Indiana Dallas is not Indiana especially Indiana without tyres how Indiana looked tight they were playing super fast they were giving up possessions but here’s the thing Boston is an amorphous blob all five of their players and especially now that Kristoph porzingis is back all five of the players on the floor are capable of beating capable of creating their own shot capable of you know you leave them open they’re going to make it they are a tough defense and the fact that they’re going to play five out could limit the effectiveness of someone like Derrick Lively certainly maybe Chase Daniel Gafford off the court and force PJ Washington to play some Center how you know Boston will have to make threes and they’ve done that all year they struggled a little bit of times with that in the playoffs but if Boston’s making threes they’re unbeatable that’s plain and simple because they have they they can attack from everywhere Dallas might have the best player in this series in Luka donic but the Celtics are Far and Away the better team and their success in this playoffs and their success in this series is going to come down to whether they’re able to execute at the critical moments in the fourth quarter to put games away to win games late and this postseason they have proven they can do that now will the scars of their Series against the Warriors bounce back or their series against the Heat bounce back because they have not played a team as tough as D Dallas’s against Cleveland they played Donovan Mitchell who’s playing at a crazy Pace they got beat in game two Boston is beatable you know they’re not an Unstoppable Juggernaut when they’re clicking on all cylinders they are and so in this series I am taking the Celtics and six I think Luca and Kyrie will prove to be very difficult and make Boston’s defense look a little more but I think in the end the balance of what needs to happen Dallas has to be more perfect than Boston Boston can be imperfect Boston can make mistakes they don’t have as many things to check off in every game as I think Dallas does now Dallas could prove me wrong by being able to defend the paint a little bit better with Derrik Lively Kristof porzingis may not be is certainly not 100% but if christops porzingis is not nearly anywhere near effective and he’s playing starter level minutes that could be a problem there’s going to be a game where bench players play a big factor whether that’s pton Pritchard whether that’s um whether that’s PJ Washington whether that’s dere Derrick Lively or Daniel Gafford there’s going to be a lot of variables in this series but on balance Boston is the better team the question is whether they will be able to frustrate donic and Kyrie enough in four games to get the wins and there will be a close game that turns this series one way or the other for all the scars Boston has in them I’m taking the Celtics to control that close game and win it now if Boston has to come from behind as much as they did against Indiana they’re going to be in trouble I think Boston has been playing with their food a lot in this postseason but they’re just so good they’ve been able to get away with it this has been their goal the entire season it’s time to raise number 18 magic fans probably aren’t going to like that but that’s that’s going to be the reality of it but that’s going to be it for me today I want to
