know today’s episode’s brought to you by prize Pi the easiest most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports go to prize.com lockon NBA use the code locked on NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 number one’s Devon Booker right I mean they’re not trading Devon Booker they would be stupid to trade Devon Booker but if we’re just being honest and actually talking about every asset the Suns have Stephen books at the top and probably the reason he’s not getting traded is also the reason he’s number one he’s the youngest has the longest contract just made an all NBA team I we don’t have to spend too much time on this one but I’ll just you know for conversation for much later in the future I’ve always thought of if it ever came to it books their their reset switch if it ever got that ugly where they had to blow this whole thing up that’s whenever you would finally talk about trading Devon Booker and recoup some assets but we are so far from that he’s at the top of the list but but he’s not going anywhere unless that is you speak to Stephen A Smith about Deon Booker and I’m Jing maybe some Nicks fans out there right yes exactly pie in the sky is an understatement as far as that goes yeah Devon Booker is quite literally the Steve Nash of the post Steve Nash era of Phoenix Suns basketball think of the Phoenix Suns his name his face his likeness are all synonymous with the franchise at this point uh he’s laid a great foundation for his career uh one that is certainly on a trajectory to become Hall of Fame caliber Hall of Fame worthy uh he still has work to do obviously in all of that especially as operating as a true number one option um in my personal opinion I think it’s just generally taking more ownership of things and kind of establishing more of a pecking order like okay I know I have some top end talents here with me this is my thing I built this up from the from the literally from the mud all the way to prominence in the in the NBA so just seeing him take that take that uh take that ownership I think he’s going to take him to that next level but yes value wise he is the franchised at this moment in time Kevin Durant doesn’t come to play with the Phoenix Suns if he’s not the the franchise player not sure Mike buen hoser comes if Devin Booker is not here like there’s a lot of things that are that are Solly tied to Devon Booker’s presence and I think a lot of the evolution with the Phoenix Suns franchise has come because of people taking um stock and putting investing into you know everything that Deon Booker is as a concept and as a player all right so next up I think is Kevin Durant and you can stop me at any point as we go through this exercise Stephen and tell me if I’m wrong or if you feel like there’s a debate to be had of any of the places I don’t think it’ll happen here though three years left on his contract or two years after this one 51 million then 55 million he’s eligible for an extension we’ve talked plenty about that um look Duran is a unique guy because he had just got traded in one of the most um one of the biggest and one of the most kind of unique trades in NBA history given his stature the amount of time he had left on the contract at that time and everything else I don’t know what a potential KD trade would ever look like but he is also on the list of players where unless he wants it or the suns are in panic blow it up mode he’s not going anywhere so we can blow past him I think this is where though the things get interesting the candidates left on this list you got Bradley Beal Yousef nurkic grayon Allen Royce O’Neal maybe you’re feeling theer Little David Rod probably not going to be third on the list here and then of course the two picks the Suns do have not yet but in two weeks that they’ll have uh which or three weeks which are they’re pick this year and they’re pick in 2031 so Stephen I’m I’m I feel like we got to go with that 2031 pick here now of course there’s projections or protections and all sorts of things that can change the value of that pick but just in a vacuum a really far out pick for a team with an uncertain future especially if it’s unprotected or lightly protected that’s going to be pretty desirable to teams and we’ve seen around the NBA in recent years whether the Kyrie trade or the Lakers getting their guys at the deadline last season or uh many others you could point to that can get you something so with all respect to Bradley Beal he’s paid a lot of money he’s had a lot of injuries I kind of think that pick comes next year I don’t disagree with you on that and I think that like you mentioned that 2020 30 that 2020 excuse me 2031 pick yeah it but especially seeing the sentiments uh involuntarily shared from the likes of James Jones from the likes of Matt isia I think they’re thinking in a specific window of years that does not quite extend all the way to 2031 that’s why that’s Matt isia doesn’t come in making the power moves and pushing things across the Finish Line with the haste and the urgency at which he’s moving if he’s going to be valuing that 2031 picks so I would agree with you on that and I also think that it’s hard to gauge value in Bradley Bill because of the no trade clause because it doesn’t matter how you value him it doesn’t matter how another team values him it’s his say so in it at the end and I feel like he’s very comfortable he hasn’t been a player that’s bounced around he’s literally played for two franchises in his career now literally this past season being the first time independent of the Washington Wizards I don’t think he’s gonna be a player that wants to upro his family especially being as tied to that as he is but past all of that I think he genuinely likes being in Phoenix and it would take some crazy behind the scenes stuff to happen for him to literally want to uproot his family you know into potentially even entertain playing for another city especially so quickly after he got traded last summer yeah it it would be interesting to imagine where he would approve a deal to right now if the suns were to bring something to him and and that obviously is at the top of any negotiation that would happen just like it was with the series of events that led him here but I have a question for you maybe in hindsight and um actually let’s let’s start the next segment off with looking back at the be trade because at the time it was a big shock that the suns were able to pull that off and get him but at the same time we also talk about it now and part of why we’re doing an episode like this and Suns fans are you know pulling their hair out over the lack of flexibility now is they did give a lot so how should we evaluate that and if we do forecast out that could be one of the big dominoes that falls in the future would it look similar it’s feel a player teams would want we’ll get into that next first Today’s Show brought to you by prize picks the best place to play up to $100 pre picks pick more pick less it’s that easy all right let’s keep it rolling Stephen so what are your thoughts on that be trade in in hindsight they give up I believe it was four swaps shamut Chris Paul’s salaries which might have been obvious of course you have to give up players making a lot of money to get another player making a lot of money but in hindsight now of course that was sort of the outside of eighton the last two types of you know middle types of players the Suns could add up to go get somebody else it’d be nice to have guy like shamet making 11 million right now you know on the books so they give that up and then a bunch of second round picks what after a season how do you evaluate that in hindsight it’s still to me feels like that was a move that they needed to do just because the shift in roster cont context from everything that they had prior to Kevin Durant to what they had after Kevin Durant it felt like there was not enough in that layer just underneath Devin Booker and Bradley Bill or Devin Booker and Kevin Durant excuse me for them to play a style of basketball that was conducive for like I said the shifting context so looking at it from the oncore Prospect and looking at it or perspective and looking at the roster um in alignment with that I feel like it was a move they needed to make I don’t think a traditional point guard is the style of player they needed on that particular salary in that particular uh featuring with this team and I think they naturally the best way to do that to get a star player like Bradley Bill somebody that fits a little bit better around everything that you’re looking to do going forward is to facilitate that trade now I that’s a lot to give up like a whole lot to give up but again you kind of looking at what other moves or what other ways they could have upgraded the roster um heading into the last off season they didn’t really have much else they could do it wasn’t quite as dire or drastic as they’re in the situation now but you know trying to chase the the upcoming um evolution of the CBA you only having you up against the deadline as far as that goes without having the ramifications that you do now they kind of got in there just before the buzzer on that and you know the dust is settled and you had have what you have but I think that’s something that if you’re looking at it in a revisionist perspective they do the same thing again if they’re in that situation of just kind of playing it out again and you know you live with what you get and at this moment in time it didn’t live up to what they desire for it to but I do think that another year with continuity a new coach all of that stuff is going to add and it’s going to be fun to revisit this conversation around this time next year yeah we talked about his fit on the court and how Bud and some of the new roster pieces could could help Beal look even more like himself in year 2 in Phoenix on last Friday’s episode so people can check that out but just to go back to the trade side of things I do think like you would probably say if you’re putting on your your you know John Hollinger hat or whoever in the NBA content world looks at things from more of that GM standpoint you might say the Wizards quote unquote won that trade right um just because like we said like you said in that last segment they had a guy making a huge amount of money who had not been consistently available with the no trade claw and they still got a lot for him you know um I guess I just think of it from the Sun standpoint and back in this rankings where we’re kind of putting him fourth on this hypothetical list here just as this exercise goes and I don’t know I I don’t know if the Suns will match what washing could match what Washington got for if they ever looked to trade Beal and that’s part of that’s part of the hit you take it’s kind of you know it’s like any investment you make or any sort of thing it it tends to take a little bit of hit in value even from whatever you gave up to get it once that time passes and everything changes so I think that’s a big part of why they looked at things and they don’t seem to be in a hurry to trade him either what are you really going to get maybe it’s even like playerwise let’s just say it’s somebody as good as Chris Paul and Landry shamut well you’re going to be worse so you know it’s kind of all roads lead back to what you said that this is something that they would do again and and and are going to continue to embrace and try to get the most out of it next up I think is is where things get particularly interesting here too Stephen I I think I would put Grayson Allen next on this list and I he can’t be traded right now but again we’re sort of just operating in a vacuum here I think when you combine his age his salary is more than it was but still not anything crazy a as this new Cap World continues to get bigger and bigger and he’s just a really versatile valuable player that you could really fit in anywhere so I mean if the suns were to make him available I think they get a first round pick back for him I think you know maybe a a decent player in return they’re not going to make that type of a trade to just sort of get rid of him but just really matching up the value I I think that’s kind of where he slots in I think when he does become eligible to be traded I’ve talked about this here and there but I don’t think it’s a lock that we just should think of Grayson Allen as a no-brainer part of the rotation on the court for this team I think he’s going to have a lot of value if they want to continue to make moves and improve I think you said that well I think as far as structuring in the order in succession I think it’s appropriate as well obviously you’re not going to put him over Bradley Bill in terms of value and you’re also not going to put him above uh the upcoming pick for upcoming draft this summer either but I do think that in that realm that’s just underneath those twoin yeah I didn’t put the I didn’t put the 2024 pick so yeah that should go that should go probably what do we think should that go ahead of Beal are both picks more valuable than Beal or I would 31 Beal 24 I would go 3124 a bill and it’s because of the no trade clause Dynamic the no the no trade clause Dynamic really puts a like a snag and things for me uh but yeah kind of getting it back bringing it back to Grayson in specific um shooting is something that’s always GNA be uh an attractor and he does he was the best three-point shooter in the league this past season on uh on efficiency and on a a fairly solid volume it wasn’t like he was taking four he was at about I think was it six or seven attempts a game if I remember off the top of my head so you know that’s gonna always have value teams are always gonna want shooting and you add to that the the extension that now going to make him a more movable contract for the Suns to bring back more in terms of a actual player a actual player or players potentially plural in addition to a pick like you mentioned I think that’s certainly possible I have always kind of assessed since uh heading into this most this most recent season trade deadline that he would end up being a puzzle piece for this team to take another step forward and obviously it’s not for a lack of talent or a lack a fit in any capacity he’s maybe the best the best type of fit in terms of a role player but again when you have the Sally cap constraints and all of the things that come with that with this team you can only get so creative and if you’re not trading one of those top three players the next easiest asset to move in terms of a roster where you’re going to be able to have attraction from teams external of you and that you will also find Value in what you could potentially get in return is going to be from Grayson Allen it’s a tough pill to swallow uh you’re probably not going to get the same level of shooting in in U in return for what you’re giving up with him but you’re going to be looking to facilitate to other weaknesses because naturally you’re going to want your best your best three players taking the majority of the shots and then allow for the other role players to fill in from there so it’s like having Grayson Allen on that contract is good for you in the short term but as an asset going forward is probably going to be better because you’re so Hand capped with everything to move that piece and then get in return what you can to facilitate the other needs on the team yeah whenever the time does come it’ll be interesting to see what they do in terms of do you know do they use him as basically the ver use the contract that he’s on as a version of what we’ve been talking about for the past month or so with nurkic and little as MH that’s just the money and then you’re attaching a pick or another well they don’t have any players right now but maybe they would in the future to get an improvement on that player an improvement on Grayson at some point or is it more of coincidentally the type of trade that he came to Phoenix with which was trading deand Drayton and breaking that up into multiple other potential rotation pieces it could go either direction and I could see it helping them in either of those versions but um because he’s making so much more money now you have that potential whereas when he was making 8.9 million there’s not really a lot you’re going to do with that it’s kind of the nir little thing where you’re probably just finding one player who makes almost that same amount or a little more and then or a little less I mean and then hoping a pick gets the job done now you have more you have more flexibility I think that’s why he has more value for the Suns but I think from a talent perspective that’s why he would have a lot of value for other teams and I the way you put it is similar to what I said on Thursday’s show of imagining what the starting lineup should be like you’re right that from a role standpoint his ability to finish plays as a shooter pull the defense out because of that have a little bit of knowhow and IQ if he does end up with the ball in his hands those things are nice but I would take a 10% hit 15% hit on those qualities if I got a 10 15% bump on size or athleticism or defense and I think that’s kind of the the balance the suns are going to be looking to strike which brings us to I think the next guy on our list not really a trade candidate immediately but could be a sign and trade candidate or a trade candidate down the road so we’ll talk about Royce O’Neal on the other side of a quick break all right so to recap so far Stephen we have Booker Durant the 2031 pick the 2024 pick Beal Grayson Allen what we’re left with as we go down this list is Rey who I mentioned before the break youf nurkic nir little and then after that it Peters out so are we on the same page that Royce O’Neal is next here he doesn’t have his next contract yet but I think we can assume it will probably be a more desirable deal unfortunately for uh the Suns and nerkish to a degree probably going to be be a more favorable contract than what nerk is currently on and that would put him next up for us yes I I I would agree with you on that so I honestly I maybe I’ve just this weird month where we have time off and we all just talk ourselves into stuff is the reason for all this and I could just be going crazy frankly but I’m thinking more and more about the possibility that they do cook up a sign and trade here where another team gets him and they he’s the player where a first round pick gets attached and they go get something more so than um nurkic or little the kind of the problem with that is I’m not sure how the timing would all work I don’t know if that could come together on draft night I I believe leave well no maybe because he’s a free agent that’s that’s the the finals would have to end first that’s the weird little wrinkle here right cuz when the finals end teams are allowed to negotiate with their players but he won’t be on that contract yet I think it’s more of something that would have to happen after July 1st with the 2031 first round pick forget this year’s draft but I could see it potentially coming together that way and I don’t know at that point sign him to a bigger contract Maybe than he deserves or you know I that sounds so like blunt but like sign him for a bigger contract than he might get on you know the market than another team would be willing to offer him um he deserves it if he gets it so who am I to say he doesn’t deserve it but and use that as a way to improve the roster I mean that that just sounds like the type of thing that A desperate team who’s trying to get creative would try over just let’s just dump nurkic and figure out what we can do yes that’s the I think that’s the operative word given the situation they’re in with the with the salary cap and everything and that’s creativity they have to navigate these Waters with intention but they have to also think outside the box and they have to think way way way outside the box if I’m being uh if I’m being exact with it so I think that signing trade with Royce is something I never really F I never really thought about but I think it would be clever and I think it’s something that would like you said be one of their most impactful ways of bringing something more valuable or not maybe more valuable but of different value in return whether that be a player whether that be pcks whether that be a combination of both something different that can add to this new team that you’re looking to establish under Mike buen hosen I think that’s important to note I think that is um I think that would be something where there would be more um there would be more Minds involved it wouldn’t be something that’s coming solely from James Jones because no like knock to him but this seems like something that’s a little bit more clever than we’ve seen his track record show to be in Seasons past and I think that’s where making some of the additions and some of the changes in the front office will kind of come to come to help insulate things a little bit more that’s gonna be something to watch for uh and you said that can’t happen that wouldn’t be able to happen until July when the start of free agency occurs right that that’s my best guess and yeah I guess what I’m going to say is I’m not even fully positive on how if it’s allowed fully because I believe that there’s some sort of thing of where you can’t acquire a player if you are sending a player out who you are sign in trading but I’ve always wondered well why couldn’t you sign and trade let’s just use O’Neal as an example get a pick back and then do a secondary deal I guess then that’s where the salary stuff comes into play so maybe it’s not legal at all I’m not fully sure I just think I’m looking at him and the unknowns of how much he could make and what that could be used for um and again maybe it’s maybe it isn’t allowed this summer but even down the line as the wrinkle we might not have been thinking about that that’s how I’ll put it because I’m by no means an expert on the cap side of things um but that brings us to little and nurkic where honestly I think we could debate either way um Little’s salary is like a third of what nurkic’s is but he his contract goes a year longer and of course he’s a much less established player so maybe that’s a little bit eye the beholder in terms of what trade you would make and what the other team likes or wants I will say little is sort of running out of chances if we’re being honest to prove himself I I don’t think he was put in the best position to succeed um but you know we’re talking about a guy who coming out of high school was a really hyped player fell down in the draft because he had an inconsistent year at North Carolina never really caught on in Portland didn’t really make the most of his opportunities this year it it might be difficult for a team to talk themselves into him at this point just talent-wise until he really puts together a season where he’s able to to show it um do you have any like do you have any hope left that we could see little become a playable player and we might talk about him as more than just his salary after this season or do you think it’s too much to expect that I don’t think it’s I won’t say it’s too much to expect I feel like he so he’s definitely a player that’s going to be impacted by the context around him he’s not going to impact the context that he’s in to that extent so kind of looking at that the more structure around and the more um the more that the pieces at the top of the Paradigm fit and how they operate with each other the better he’s gonna play because you know he’s not he’s not a fire starter he’s going to be somebody that’s playing off of stuff that other people are doing and I I feel like there’s opportunity there with him he certainly has potential it’s just a matter of if the situation he’s in will breed for him to you feel me kind of take those steps I think he’s the type of player that can especially with this Suns team with the way that they’re stacked topheavy I think he’s the type of player that can fit around but he has the sustain more than anything he’s showing it in short windows even in short um stints and short stretches of games that he can do ancillary things that are conducive to a team that’s trying to play on the playoff stage in some capacity he just has to be consistent and I think we saw him in and out of the rotation a handful of times this season with Frank vogle uh started the season early in the rotation and then he went to the doghouse like maybe a couple of weeks in and he didn’t really get back out until like almost Christmas so like I think that’s the he just has to find some ST power find a coach that is on the same page as him as far as how he’s featured what he’s going to be asked to do uh that’s GNA be tough but I think there’s possib there’s possibility there with him I won’t give up on him uh proverbially give up on him yet I still think there’s something that can be had there in him the question though which I oppos to you do you think it’s still going to be opportunity for him here in Phoenix or do you think he’s going to end up being a piece that is kind of moving around I think if if they can find a trade with a player that they like and some kind of pick remember they also have two second so you know I I think he could easily be somebody we see be the salary piece at something next deadline which is more when second round picks and smaller deals it seems like tend to happen these days in the NBA just like the Suns getting Royce this past year so but in terms of this I mean I think the thing with him that’s always been tricky even dating back to to UNC is you would like to see if the like it’s fine to have an inconsistent jump shot plenty of players have made it work anyway but you have to be able to do something else on offense and you know people who have watched him much closer than me but I was paying attention more to the draft back then because the Suns had picks higher like the the the processing the doing those other smaller things as an offensive player cutting playmaking moving the ball doing this and that that that also is kind of a limitation to his game so stylistically he sort of feels like somebody who just needs to become a three and D player but the threes aren’t going in so it just you know he’s not he’s not 19 anymore and and this stuff can get difficult so I think that’s that’s the problem but hey I I I honestly feel like if you’re looking for a player a coach to get that out of him with an actual opportunity you know he had Terry STS I believe early on but didn’t really play chony bips Frank vogle those guys aren’t anybody’s idea of like you know bringing the most out of offensive Talent so maybe bud can be that I I’m I wouldn’t be opposed to it if he’s on the roster I would like to see him get some minutes early in the season depending on what else they do but um we’ll see uh nerk wise what I say real quick on um speaking to Bud he has had uh history with players kind of in a similar context with uh Nasir little uh you kind of look at the players that he had on the wing uh with those teams in Atlanta I think the first name that comes to mind for me is deari Carroll now obviously deari had way more stand power in terms of like you said the three and D realm and if the three-point shot is not hidden can you bring something else to offense he’s a good connector obviously most of his value came on the def def van with his versatility etc etc don’t think that nasier little is going to be able to hit that level that deari Carol was on and be a starting caliber three and D player but I do think that there’s something there in terms of Bud having consistency over his tenure as a head coach finding these players of these types to get the most out of for a season or two raising their value and then either they hit free agency or they’re able to offload those players on higher value than they originally got them on and able to obviously build a boat on your roster around that I think that’s a caveat to keep in mind um that might be better and might be more conducive to the team in terms of bringing more talent in or bringing some type of other asset in down the line but yeah that just kind of came to mind while you were been I mean like torian Prince he had at the Hawks he had Tony Snell in Milwaukee I would even put Bobby poris in there as a kind of a similar guy who just had talent but wasn’t really able to have a winning role on a good team until he got to Milwaukee so yeah I I think Bud’s a guy you that’s why you hire him and you hope that he can be that differen maker but um all right you guys got like four or five minutes of nir little talk there to close out the show who would have thought all right that’ll wrap us up though ranking the sun straight assets top to bottom we’ll see what they do we’ll see what other teams think more so than who cares what James Jones values these guys at or me or Stephen it’s really going to be one of those other 29 front offices when we’re really talking about getting something done here but that’ll all come as the offseason continues enjoy your weekend hit follow subscribe we’ll be back Monday likely more news the draft and that early free agency negotiation window are basically all just waiting for the NBA Finals to be over when they really heat up so enjoy the games but also be look forward to that and I will talk to you guys next time
