24,000 subscribers are all hanging out wondering how the heck this happened Andy because oh man uh things got real interesting uh on Thursday morning as uh Adrien WJ narowski of ESPN drops a what I think would be considered an atomic level W bomb um to to describe the level of bomb would you’re flirting with the idea of being tasteless in all honesty like we’re we’re talking about like the type of scale that we would have to uh compare it to feels insensitive because my God forget the idea of taking you and me and all of our listeners and all of our viewers by surprise this news took people far you know reporters far more plugged in than us and we consider ourselves reasonably looped in but these are people far more than us on a cover in this day-to-day making calls all day whatever they were surprised to of course the news from wge that the Lakers uh have targeted and are entering into negotiations this course uh it was actually even backed up by Hurley himself who told players at Yukon today that this is a real thing uh but the Lakers have targeted Dan Hurley the uh head coach at Yukon back-to-back National Champion Yukon Huskies um they are prepared to make a massive offer which is by the way what it will take to uh get Hurley to La um and uh this is they’re hoping to accelerate talks over the next few days so you and I Andy with Anthony Irwin and certainly over the course of the week on the shows by ourselves and all that it really talked about the um incredible lack of process not even talking about uh you know something in terms of reflecting on JJ red a good JJ reic bad uh but just like how did we get here um I just finished my breakfast this morning and it is uh a little bit of that eating some Crow this morning because this news is uh as as dad used to say like the apology line I’m sorry I was wrong please forgive me this from the Lakers is the sort of transformative type um you know attempted hire I guess you know that you would want them to be trying to make doesn’t guarantee Hurley is going to be um successful but like this is the sort of big bold move that also actually makes sense and ticks a lot of the boxes that the Lakers have been trying or saying that they’ve been trying to to make well I mean look first first things first it should be made clear we’re not at the finish line yet there’s always a chance this doesn’t end up happening although given the recording from WJ and the fact that Dan Hurley has a let his players know about this and B one would assume you know when wge put out his report wge is both careful and plugged in enough that he would have confirmed this with Dan Hurley that this is a real possibility it makes you feel like if nothing else we are very close to this happening because the Lakers by I think this is the sort of thing that you get from if you’re wo you get it from Rob blinka and Rob of course go with that until until it’s he’s not GNA give him that until it’s it’s it’s far enough along well of course of course I I I have no doubt that this it’s interesting too and this is one of those things that looking back on it and I will admit I did not notice it you did not notice it I think a lot of people did not notice it but looking back was a tell hiding in plain sight because there’s been so much consistent reporting about uh JJ reck being the front runner which by the way I think if I get the impression that if Hurley was not an option or I guess for whatever reason this fell apart JJ reick might still very well be the FrontRunner but there was so much of an assumption and so much prevalent reporting that reic was in the driver seat for all this and that was essentially fate to compete I went back and look at looked at W’s timeline on Twitter and to be clear a timeline on Twitter does not reflect quite literally everything W has said or reported about the Lakers coaching search but if you go back from this moment of Hurley all the way down his timeline to Darin ham getting fired there is a conspicuous lack of any reic acknowledgement like any so either W scrub the crap out of this timeline that’s yeah I don’t think that’s how this works no and frankly there are enough you know there are enough receipt Keepers that that wouldn’t work I don’t think that’s something WJ would do in the first place or this tell that wge who is beyond one of the biggest news Breakers in all of sports is extremely plugged in with the Lakers that W was not really going hard or even making much of a thing over Ric at all in hindsight that I did not notice because I think my assumption was yeah W is probably one of the million people that I’ve heard this stuff Blends this stuff all Blends in after a while that was actually a pretty obvious thing in hindsight yeah I mean I guess but it’s it’s an kind of funny it’s sure it’s just it’s it is a like when you look at like I I I don’t neither one of us are college basketball people I I have not watched college basketball consistently in what probably for a decade I will tell you uh over that time most of the games have been played apparently been won by Dan Hurley um but the the I lost at once I stopped betting on it right once you once you start getting into like the the the the checklist of what the Lakers are looking for like you know it’s like the success of college coaches in the NBA isn’t great but the you know it’s also a very different environment in a very different game and it is worth noting that if you’re looking for a combination of I the the the biggest criticisms of reic is that not that he could never be a good head coach it’s that you’re starting with a guy who’s never been a coach period and you are putting yourself in a position where even as the Lakers say you know in their list they want a guy who can you know coach now and be the you know coach a decade down the road they want to instill a culture they want to build a program they want to do all these other things and have a system that and all this stuff that the chances of reic hitting the ground with that fully formed and fully developed um in a way that he is fully confident in and knows the results of is just low it’s not fair it’s it’s an unfair expectation for reic when you look at Dan Hurley one of the things that beyond the fact that he’s you know kind of a you know he’s an intense personality uh he is a lot of that stuff which kind of makes you think college coach you know controlling this that but he’s also seen as a an incredible innovator uh you know particularly offensively at the college level very creative very uh forward-thinking very open-minded in terms of how he does things and and puts the system together he has a system he has a program he has an ethos um he’s never been an NBA head coach but the chances of him showing up on day one being able to satisfy the need to win right away with the other organizational goals of building something much higher with Dan Hurley than JJ reck yeah and that is actually something I before we go and we’re going to do a larger show about this that will be out for Friday um and before getting to my next point I want to make sure that folks know element of this news that Dan Hurley could end up the next coach which Beyond Dan Hurley himself I actually think is the most interesting and and I’d say most impactful part of all this and I’m reading from wo’s report on ESPN quote part of the Allure of hurle traces back to the changing landscape of NBA roster building under the CBA because of the roster building limitation of the new you used to when it comes to building a championship team or just the acknowledgement of building period and to me this feeli like the Lakers potentially with a massive and very necessary mindset change like it’s ironic that this is coming on the heels of the discussion that we had with Anthony about how and this is something that the every dayers have heard me talk about damn near every day that the Lakers don’t ever seem interested in building period that they want everything done right away that they always want to be as as close to Championship ready as possible even if in reality you’re not all that close and they don’t seem interested in the steps and they don’t seem interested in sustainability if what w is reporting the motivation behind going after Dan is accurate that to me is more significant than Hurley himself like that to me is something that is really really mon Mally different for this organization in a way that was long long overdue like it if it turns out that I I don’t want to say I’ve been wrong because there’s been too much evidence that I’ve been correct but if I have been in the last week or so incorrect in my assessment that this stuff hasn’t mattered to them I am thrilled to be wrong I mean I think this is you know to have it articulated in the way that that W did is a little bit different you know it kind of again it sort of matches broadly the that sort of meaning what it means is like the the the wish list which I’ve been kind of mocking um for for a few weeks now they actually had somebody in mind because W just said this has been the idea all along um you know the and this has been something the Lakers have been uh targeting trying to do and really considering hard um you know from the jump and if that’s the case then the wish list actually had a um a name to like you know again I I made a joke about eating crow like you know may have gotten this one wrong uh on on pinka and it’s not about knowing that Hurley will be a great NBA like this is a big bold hire or attempted you know to do something that serves all of that stuff in theory you know it it reflects um you’re bringing in a very respected guy um we saw LeBron’s reaction who tweeted this out when he was you know actually reacting to a reic um Dan Hurley conversation on on that podcast um where LeBron expressed his admiration for Hurley but more importantly it really reflects this idea of make the next coaching hire based on Anthony Davis make it based on organizational needs for the next decade don’t make it based on me um and I think what you get if they can manage to pull this off they’re going to have to offer him a ton of money Yukon is going to try real hard to keep him around we just signed a 32 million dollar extension right he the Yukon is going to work really hard to keep him um and so it’s nothing is done until it’s done but again I that this is now something that’s being that was broken and talked about now indicates that it’s it’s real serious and they think they can get it done so um obviously something we’ll talk a lot more about going forward but this really is a Monumental shift in this coaching search and it’s going to take a lot of people us included um a few you know probably a few episodes of acknowledging that in this case you know say what you will about Rob say what you will about the basketball Ops Department whatever that they had a vision and you know we um the Royal we um and these specifically in terms of the criticism uh might have been premature so uh very exciting day for the Lakers As far as Woj Bombs go, this one was atomic.

The Lakers, he says, are targeting and have entered negotiations with UConn head coach Dan Hurley to become their next head coach. This was extremely shocking news, as everyone — like truly everyone who does reporting on this — didn’t see it coming. All of the attention has been on ESPN’s JJ Redick, and to a lesser extent, New Orleans assistant James Borrego. The Athletic’s Shams Charania had reported earlier in the week that Redick had become the frontrunner, and that talk of how Redick might staff up.

There is still a lot left to do. Connecticut will move mountains to try and keep Hurley in Storrs. And it might work. But Hurley has told his players that this is real, so over the next few days we’ll see how things progress.
