The James Ham Show – The Sacramento Kings Have To Improve Their Talent Level

The James Ham Show – The Sacramento Kings Have To Improve Their Talent Level

my initial thought there’s a little dirty pool going on man and the the the side I’m looking at is the Lakers side yeah maybe they it wasn’t moving fast enough for him or they’re like we gonna make this play put a lot of pressure on this guy almost make it you can come back from anything but almost make it where you can’t go back or that there’s that or we I I don’t think absurd guys to think we could dumb this down to a high school type thought we’re scooping the Celtics eat got a little thirsty with that rival that’s right the the the Celtics rivalry not just the Rivalry the national stage we’re gonna up we’re I I watched I I tuned in um right after the story broke to to greeny and his crew and well you know we we were going to talk Dallas and Celtics but wge has Shook Up the world here with this news regarding Dan Hurley and it’s like okay he didn’t but like I get it it’s Connecticut it’s the two-time national champion it’s the loss I get you’re salivating right now greeny I get that but the Lakers knew that the Lakers knew that so knowing that this wasn’t supposed to get out boy that’s uh that’s tough it appears all parties are still trying to attempt to work towards a deal but James it doesn’t look like this thing with Dan Hurley and the Los Angeles Lakers is as done as we might have thought it was yesterday yeah this is all the strangest media back and forth I’ve ever seen like it makes whatever happened during the Mike Brown contract negotiation just like looked like absolutely nothing I mean you’re talking about a two-time national championship coach who just signed a new deal last year and all of a sudden is being chased by the biggest franchise in the NBA and so it’s just putting this entire like first of all I’ve never seen one reporter gloat and like like basically he’s out there like like like shooting on pistols like w look what I did like the whole thing is wild to me to watch uh because like WJ is has done a hit with every single a different hit like all day long and then like pregame and postgame like like what in the world is happening about this same thing and not even mentioning uh JJ reck like like super hyperfocused that this has always been the plan and it’s like really really strange I don’t think that uh like we’ve been around Shams long enough we know Shams well enough Shams didn’t just whiff so bad I mean this isn’t a like a like a two 200 hitter who just took a big hack and and came up empty he had something um at this point is might be proving to be wrong but I kind of want to know what happens here because this thing especially if you know like I don’t think Danny uh Danny Hurley’s happy at all with this at all Dan Hurley is he’s not super happy that this got out and if that’s the case what if it does fall through and and what’s next and what if it does flip back the other way and then we had like literally like all of this going on the biggest name in in in NBA media like pushing something that that just doesn’t happen and I know they always have their little outs their little out Clauses and everything they write but um it sure doesn’t feel like that’s the case I mean you can run any of the Little clips of of wge and it just feels like a dude who’s who’s dancing on someone else’s grave I’m looking at this situation from from Dan Hurley’s perspective and I just really feel the price is going up like you you you guys kind of for whatever reason you got thirsty yeah you got thirsty you played a little game you made my life a little more difficult than it needed to be in in this situation a little more tenuous than it needed to be before we had even gotten to that point and you talking about 10 or 11 it might need to sound like 12 or 13 to get me to do it at this point because the pain and suffering right pain and suffering at this point um because you you they they put him in a in a tough situation tough situation now you know there’s like I mentioned earlier there’s ways to get out of to stay in Yukon and to get out of this you’ll be fine you can you can easily do an interview there and be like yeah you know I love the NBA and you know it was a great opportunity but at the end of the day I just couldn’t leave stores Connecticut and people would go crazy and they they love them and you know he he could tell that to recruits too and tell recruits man I realized I’m a I’m a college guy like he can say face with this if if you’re if you’re Dan Hurley but the Lakers it feels like they gotta get this done especially like what you’re talking about James where you know they got the the guy that you know is putting out a lot of this information doing this Victory lab acting like it’s a done deal they reported on it nonstop on ESPN all yesterday the day of the finals as if it was a done deal yeah so the Lakers got to get this done it feels like else they’re GNA have a lot more egg on their face than they already do right now I’ve always found it interesting to you know the NBA like wants all eyes on the on the finals right that there’s no question about that like I if you did this like today it would have been fine they would have been like okay whatever but the fact that it was the day of game one of the finals like the NBA’s focus is always like hey let’s get let’s make our game the biggest thing right now but in at the same time the first game of the finals is when when uh Adam Silver does like a state of the NBA and I haven’t I don’t understand that either because like the first thing that starts to come out is you know yeah like with the new television deal all but wrapped up and what are we looking at like 11 million 11 years 776 million or whatever it was that’s what the rumor is I mean 776 billion whatever I don’t know was no it’s 76 76 billion my bad my billion yeah my billion my bad um but like with that like the first thing that’s gonna pop up is expansion and expansion is going to happen they’ve been waiting for the television deal for expansion to happen for a long time and so I’m just kind of surprised that like day one of the finals becomes like the biggest distraction of non-basketball basketball stuff that you can possibly have out there I think it’s the stage I I I think that’s that’s that’s that’s part of it like well at least as it pertains to Adam Silver Adam Silver knows this is you know it’s the NBA Finals like everybody’s tuned in um and I I actually don’t have any issue with with Adam addressing you know the state of the NBA so to speak uh prior to the NBA finals it’s not I mean I think Roger Goodell does the same thing uh at the Super Bowl or certainly around the Super Bowl I I I don’t really have an issue with that there’s so many media members there that’s the big deal yeah like you you get a chance to to to address them all at once and my opinion Hammer is that’s why somebody likely within the Lakers Universe got a little thirsty and gave the thumbs up for w to drop this news because uh it dominated the news coverage prior to tip off yesterday oh yeah and as as as you mentioned and I believe you’re 100% correct this is not what Dan Hurley wanted and he’s not pleased with this and but again it appears sides are trying to work something out it’s just not as cut and dry as that because it’s not like yukon’s okay see you later pal Yukon from what we Yukon has offered him three more million dollars per year Bas what he currently makes yeah they they they they they’re offering him a three $3 million per year raise right now at this point and it’s still not what the Lakers are offering him I’m working on getting the number of years of what this deal might look like but there’s a lot of different things that play outside just the Lakers and Yukon um also think for a second Connecticut Los Angeles like Connecticut and California man those are very very different places uh there’s there’s just a lot there there’s a lot here um I thought for sure it would be announced today uh prior to a text exchange that we just had and now I’m one I’m not sure if it’s going to be announced at all but two I don’t think it’s happening today yeah I I’m with you I’m with you on that and I also think you know again uh Hurley is an East Coast guy like like they grew up in in New Jersey right and so like maybe that is part of this um but if you’re a coach that has aspirations to jump to the NBA there’s no bigger job there just isn’t like the Nick’s job isn’t bigger than this so yeah I don’t know what job you think J ain’t gonna be open yeah and not only that but like this is Hollywood money like you’re you’re G to get paid and he’s going to walk in is the highest like first year head coach in the history of the game most likely either way I think the Lakers are playing in a in a really expensive pool you know and a very expensive and experienced pool uh when it comes to you know a guy who’s never been an NBA head coach or an NBA assistant and Dan Hurley uh and then JJ reck you know who’s never been a coach at all outside of like aaou um so like they’re playing but but both of these guys one of them again who makes what five and a half million a year or whatever it is in in Connecticut and then the other one probably makes a couple of million dollars a year to do television and is probably in line to get a whole bunch more money especially with all of the new television contracts coming up so you’re playing in like a very very pricey pool for guys who we don’t know how they’re going to be as NBA head coaches and that that to me is is interesting but is also is you know like I I think it’s it’s a dangerous area if you’re the Lakers like who knows I mean like more often than not college coaches don’t succeed at the NBA level in their first in their first run not always like there are some exceptions but whether Dan Hurley is one of those exceptions or not I don’t know the the thing that I would say to Dan Hurley and I agree with you James East Coast guy you know that’s that’s where he’s born and bred for the the stage that you would be on the the the level of your profession that you would be able to be on and the money that’s being offered feels like you gotta you got to take that chance feels like you got to take that chance and and you can the thing I keep saying is you can always go back to college you may not always get this opportunity this may very literally be a once in a-lifetime opportunity and yeah I I would it it’d be it’d be hard for me not to take take that chance yeah let’s say he gets fired after two years he’s walking away with basically the same amount that his contract is right now just in years that he’s going to get paid where he doesn’t coach like he he’ll walk away with 30 plus million so uh to me I think that he can always go back and no matter what he’s going to go back and find a top 10 program or top 15 program and then if it’s not if it’s say he’s got to go to a top 20 program he’ll make them into a top 10 program very quickly like he’s a really good coach and I get it but he’s also he’s a really good college coach and his R recruiting class has been really good and you just don’t know what it’s going to look like when he walks into an NBA building and whether or not he’s going to be able to command the room like he has at the college game or whether he’s gonna burn down the bridge too quick because he does like he’s rough I mean he’s very vocal he like both both Hurley brothers are very in-your-face coaches they’re they’re very demanding and you never know how it works how it plays out at the NBA level J James says something that was interesting though I try not to you think today the the where the the franchises are where the NBA landscape is right now A Lakers head coaching job is bigger than a Nick’s head coaching job today oh yeah I would say I no historically the Lakers are that yeah I do but think about think about what we just just saw from the Knicks in this playoff run and like the that’s cute well the the the court side those seats aren’t even sold no no that’s they’re not even up for for for sale that’s the same that’s the same story at the the the what the crypto crypto the I don’t know if that’s the case this year it’s the same thing don’t do that no of course it is yeah LeBron James plays for the Los Angeles Lakers the Knicks I think the Knicks are a hotter ticket right now well regardless that doesn’t but that’s not the that’s that that’s not the question which would mean that it’s a if the if the so is it just LeBron James no it’s LeBron went to the Knicks is the is the Lakers job still the is that still the premier team in the league no yeah LeBron changes things okay yeah LeBron absolutely changes things especially LeBron and New York yeah like if if LeBron went to Cleveland if LeBron went to Cleveland that wouldn’t change they’d be on NBA TV no no that’s fine but I but but the point being I think the Lakers job would be bigger than the Knick’s job I think the Lakers job is always gonna be bigger than the Nick job no matter what today with where these things are if LeBron left the Lakers the Nick’s job would be a bigger job a big I no I disagree I disagree a bigger job versus a better job is very different I still think the Lakers job would be bigger do you defin is like being a bigger job like the I still think the Mystique of the Lakers is bigger than the Knicks yeah because they they have the winning history but that’s why I preference it saying right now like right now again and that’s what makes it better the job is better H I don’t know I don’t know man I know you love the Knicks I know I know your heart’s battling between the Lakers and the Knicks right now but it is it is New York City no I know what this Angeles Big Show that no what’s the now what’s your line no Nick’s tape that’s what go New York go New York go all I had to look I had to look this up I knew I knew it was good Billy Donovan Billy Donovan was 55 and 27 his first year in the NBA he did his thing good I mean Brad didn’t do that I mean Brad was it was an entirely different team but goodness gracious it was 52 and 27 walking out of Florida he did his thing are those the only two only two successful yeah uh Billy Brad and there’s John John caliper actually sneaky wasn’t bad he wasn’t a disaster I think they made the Nets made the playoffs with him he wasn’t good and neither well no cuse John calry it’s all relative but I think he he made the playoffs because I think he played against Jordan and the Bulls one of those years I think I think Cal Perry did a he did a better job than probably remember patino was a disaster although what did patino do with the Knicks before I don’t remember that he was with the Knicks well I feel like they might have made the playoffs with him there I I’m not sure but how does yeah caliper has into this conversation oh see that’s different yeah caliper 72 and 112 as a as a head coach I’m sorry what2 and 112 yeah yeah but he did have a 43 and 39 record and did make the playoffs in his second season all right um and they did lose in the first round to the Bulls No 3 0 I think that was on the Last Dance I think that was when uh they tried to make it as if Jordan made Scott barell better because he cursed him out all the time and then Scott brell had a a nice game against the the Nets to send the home I think here’s a team for you Keith Van Horn krie KD Jason Williams but the uh murdering Jason not the other one no uh Sam Cassell Kendall Gil uh Chris Gatling Sherman Douglas Ronnie cyle and Michael cage oh and David benois Off the Bench Lucius Harris I like slam slam famously said New Jersey Nets that team uh NBA champ by 2001 bet on it man they it keeps going they had Xavier McDaniels hiding on the bench and Yad Dar one of his few seasons in the league rip uh yeah crazy he had a lot of power forwards and centers I gotta be honest wh while you’re there gonna coach the Kings J what what was uh what was patino looking like if you could get that quick because Batino patino was not good with Boston well yeah but they like drafted every single one of his his Kentucky dudes like didn’t they have like shout out Ron Mercer Big Ups to him I think Tony duk was there as well Antoine Walker which end up being really good okay so and his he coached the Knicks for a couple of Seasons patino did and actually had a 52 and 30 season and then his time with Boston was a mess uh he finished 192 and and 220 but his his career with the Celtics was 102 and 146 oh yeah that’s that’s not great yeah the the Boston team again that’s when they brought in all those young players so uh yeah Chanty and oh they had pis Ellison on that oh his whole team was rough that’s a year though Walt mccardy uh Ron Mercer they brought in all the young kids Antoine Walker all all the Kentucky guys like in one draft I thought Ron Mercer was nice he was nice I didn’t think he was nice he just didn’t it didn’t really work the NBA but he was that dude in Kentucky H Brad’s story is a little bit different 25 and 57 his first year 40 and 42 his second 48 and 34 53 and 29 55 and 27 49 and 33 boy reading those numbers out loud 48 and 24 36 and 36 is final year reading those numbers out loud the discourse around Brad Stevens as a head coach is stupid that man is a good head coach was the yeah that he wasn’t good um I I know I was critical of him in the bu I there was um but I didn’t think he wasn’t bad or something like that there were a lot of people who thought Brad kept his job in Boston as a mediocre head coach because he was white oh that’s that’s good media and again like there’s like that’s crazy he a he was a first year head coach out of what was it Butler Butler and his second year he’s two games below 500 his third year but by the way two he’s in the playoffs he’s in the play he’s Brad Stevens made the playoffs every year but the first one and I guess it became there are people that we know over at uh the publication formerly known as dead spin or perhaps it’s still dead spin who will die on this hill and I guess maybe it’s because he lost in the Conference Finals twice maybe it’s because he couldn’t get him over the hump I don’t know what it is not Brad Stevens is a hell of a coach that’s part of the reason that’s part of the reason I want the the Celtics to win so bad this year is he has the opportunity to okay I didn’t win as a head coach but I it wasn’t Danny AES that got chrisop porzingis here it wasn’t Danny AES that got Drew Drew holiday here I had to trade my favorite player yeah or the guy who I always thought was Brad’s favorite player as a coach and that was Marcus probably was I think that he was Marcus Smart is is a is a guy you would love to have on your team especially if you’re a coach yeah he is a coach’s favorite type of player for sure you need a Marcus Smart yeah I I remember I was critical of him in the bubble because I remember the Celtic just kept jacking up threes in that Series against Miami remember this oh that’s right I was like what are you like what are we doing here like let’s let’s get to the bucket here and they wouldn’t do it and and Miami was going into a Zone I thought he was tricking him or whatever I’ve blocked so much of that out I think I remember Donovan and Jamal going for 50 went crazy and that’s like all I remember from that bam had that crazy block I think in game one against ont I remember that and that set the tone for that series but um and then we we did a uh Instagram show after LeBron didn’t shoot the ball in game four I think we did do an Instagram show of the finals on a Saturday morning but um wild times it was it’s it’s never in my wildest thoughts that I think Brad Stevens was a mediocre coach like he’s a really good coach he he is he is a really good coach that’s that’s crazy yeah he’s a good coach um but but but like looking at Brad look at what Brad did and looking at what Billy Donovan did I mean yeah there’s you know yeah there coaches that come in and and make difference that’s a good that’s James put it out that the one is Larry Brown man I forgot about Larry Brown National that was that was Dame that was name that wasn’t me yeah Larry Brown fine it’s fine TC no thanks TC it’s good oh wow but Larry but Larry’s kind of weird because it’s like NBA coach college coach coach college coach like I don’t even know how to he he start I don’t know where he I think he started in it was his first job Kansas like his first high pro job I feel like I don’t know no okay so he went to North Carolina maybe he was too for that’s so I was gonna say I thought his first job was a pro job it might have been an ABA I don’t know he was an ABA point guard he was part of the biggest trade ever he was with New Orleans you’re you’re right about the ABA That’s player he as a player he was part of the biggest trade like the most lopsided trade ever where um one team gave up oh man it’s like Steve Snapper Jones and him it was the the team in San Francisco like like either made a big trade to collect all these one team was going bankrupt or was out of money and they traded everybody for like Doug Mo or something it was wild you know what’s incredible about Larry Brown’s career that I would bet Kenny’s life earnings on that will never ever ever ever be even remotely replicated Larry Brown started coaching in 1972 Larry Brown won his first and only NBA Championship in 2004 oh wow process that for a second what world does that ever happen again yeah I mean he was at he coached for Indiana he coached for Philly he coached for Detroit like he was all over the place I was waiting to see if you were gonna name all of them yeah New York is in there Charlotte is in there Casey mentioned the Clippers in there San Antonio is in there uh the Nets are in there um oh yeah for I remember that ABA version of Denver is in there and they almost all won yeah Championship but they were all super I mean uh Conference Finals first round Miss playoffs first round first round Conference Finals Conference Finals uh first round Miss playoffs Miss playoffs conference semis conference semis lost in the NBA Finals uh first round like he yeah man yeah he he his team’s won his teams won he probably wants to coach now he’s how old is he 83 years old I bet you he wants to coach the Lakers right now he um I remember when he he uh was with the Sixers I remember he had just had a a child I was like Wow with his wife he had to be in his mid-50s I’m sorry Google alpacino baby sir Google Robert Dao come on man wow James will be proud of me I saw Good Fellas for the first time over the weekend I saw that I almost uh responded to you on on the Twitter box with that fantastic oh yeah there are a lot of good movies that I I believe that you haven’t seen oh that’s a fact I haven’t seen a lot bad boy four dropped last night it did it did I’d rather go back and watch game four of the 1988 NBA Finals as opposed to watching you’d rather go back and watch the opening round of the whack Championship I started watching clipped and I don’t know if I can do it I yeah come on I don’t I don’t know if I can do it like the early do river stuff that the way they act like like they literally are like a poice they show up like the phone calls like right away like all of it seems like it really feels like telen Nolla like it’s way over the top so far Doc Rivers getting in a Prius because they didn’t send a car like I don’t know that was amazing uh we’ll come back uh we’ll I don’t know what we’ll talk about but we’ll talk about it with James when dealing with Casey return here on Sacramento sports leader ESPN 1320 yo yeah no that’s funny somebody in the chat Jo Joe pes’s character in that movie is that’s a wild boy oh yeah when he shoots the guy for uh the guy who’s getting the drink first of all he shoots him in the foot because he wants him to dance and then and then he shoots and kills him when he comes back with the giy foot like what what are we doing yeah boy and the New Yorkers the way they talk is hilarious man that is one of the great great films like you can’t look away it’s top level yeah my son is on a major like he started watching ter Terminator and then Terminator 2 and then he went to predator and watched a couple of those now he’s switched over to alien started with the old alien uh I don’t know what number He’s on by this point but he’s just been binge watching since his semester ended yeah yeah he I’ve seen Casino I have seen Casino was a great movie too was a great movie pesy yeah pes’s a that’s his bag he he bodies those roles yeah he was great in Lethal Weapon as well great in Home Alone Oh yeah he was not great in eight heads in a duffel bag it just wasn’t very good movie well all right you you you think I’m funny funny how like funny like like funny like a clown like like what like no like what do you mean no just the way you tell the story is funny come on man the way no no he’s a big boy he can talk like funny how you think Kenny watch him more than once he may around rewind that that one back I have I’ve seen the movie once I’ve seen that scene probably 10 times oh yeah my cousin Pete brings up he’s incredible in my cousin venny isn’t that um with Marissa to yeah Marissa to and Ralph machio yeah that’s that’s a a a great film yeah the way we talk yeah he goes uh where is it that I I don’t sign shoes no more Billy I’m just saying just can you take a joke you can’t take a j I’m just saying you saying I’m sign I don’t sign shoes anymore can you believe this guy can’t take a joke I’m up here having a joke with him he can’t take a joke well you were a little disrespectful you did get a little out of line I didn’t get out of line no you did you got out L whole scene after watching it once the way they be talking he was like they say I was just being having fun with him and then he gets all s well no you you you did get a little disrespectful there it was a little disrespectful I you know you did you did though you did he’s memorized a few of the Lions yeah yeah it’s hilarious and then T-Bone with the two Utes excuse me did you say Utes what is it yeah the two Utes are you are you trying to say youths H Kevin nandhi up there with uh one of the best best dressed guys on television he is I didn’t I wasn’t a big fan of his suit the other day he had he had like a not the purple one sky blue sky blue joint I mean it wasn’t he had a purple one on the other day I a nice suit I just wasn’t feeling the color I think when you’re uh when you’re an employ employee like Kevin is I think they pay for your clothes like you go to the city like you can you know pick who you working with at first I thought you meant Kevin the intern I’m like wait what Kevin that’s my man yeah I I would never classify Kevin as the best dressed guy in the building ke Kevin very much dresses like he works on a morning show all of those people just kind of come to work in what they went to bed in coming back Hammer all right back here with our man James ham with the Insiders you did you were a little disrespectful you did you did insult him a little bit oh oh you are you still quoting the movie he’s going back insult him just a little bit you did insult him do you have an off switch pal it’s called the board it’s a big red button that says on and off it’s over there to the left it’s one of the buttons I don’t touch but I know where it’s out Jessie started pulling his string earlier and Doc River showed up and gotta get people with get the people with the new I’m I’m trying to book The Ultimate Warrior for next week for some reason Jerry Jones was here like no one asked for that no oh no oh Jesse was so fired up last night you should have seen the he had like Austin videos like screenshot videos he had Ultimate Warrior gifts that first quarter ended like our guy was on oh it’s been a lot of talk it’s been a lot of talk you guys got three more games of it by the way he was already in a chair getting the porzingis cut oh I love it I love it it’s fantastic absolutely fantastic um I don’t know anyone got a king’s question cuz I got nothing I think King’s been able to lay low for a little bit here they got they were able to move on I I hit Bobby Gerald earlier who was listening to the Dream Team he he he he he was he was chiming in on the Dream Team conversation and it was like uh yeah I I guess I guess we got to do this get Bobby in here I mean we’re we’re let we’re we’re we’re you know we’re a day under three weeks away now I know J I think the kings are drafting a player at 13 is going to wear a jersey for the Kings next year who’s you think so I’m saying that right now um I don’t know happen I don’t feel about that the way I feel about the Mavericks but it I still think they move I think that there um there are a lot of advantages to moving the pick this season and uh like even if it’s to move back in this year’s draft but pick up another like a 2025 or 2026 to kind of like lessen the blow of the um of the steppan role then I think that you know like the Kings could actually you know like I I think it there’s a lot of reasons to move the pick like first of all I don’t think you’re going to get a player at 13 that can help you this year and this team needs help this year I mean really help you I I don’t know like crack I mean maybe but he’s he was mocked to the kings of 13 who’s that DT connect you know how I feel about D conect and he fits the the the mon mcir mode I think he’s like 23 24 years old oh good he don’t connect he he not gonna start for you he loves that M loves senior citizens he he could help you this year but the number 13th pick is probably worse um close to an NBA starter on the open market and by itself yeah well I mean by itself I mean you’re going to have to make up the the financials whatever like yeah I mean I think that there’s a way in which you could throw like expiring contracts or one of your 1718 million do contracts uh along with um the number 13 pick to Washington for Kyle kusma like maybe I’m off there but that seems about value and and for as much as it would be you know you would be losing a player it would be more about matching salaries than it would be anything else like I think the number 13 pick like I don’t think if I’m an NBA team right now I I’m not looking at like the top six picks in the draft because I don’t think the value for the contract is there and even at number 13 like number 13’s making almost $5 million a year that’s a lot so I think that they’re players out there that are that are uh that can help you more than what you’re going to get from the number 13 pick and you know whether it might not be kozma it might be someone else but that’s where I think the value is it’s about that level of player not an Allstar level player but a guy who’s under contract who’s 28 29 years old who could step in and be a a major addition to your roster like right away and I don’t know that’s about when we talk about trading the 13th pick we’re talking about working with the team drafting a player for them and trading it right like there’s no trade the Kings cannot like execute a trade today that sends the 13th pick anywhere any conversation we’re having about trading that pick is after a player is drafted right yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah you can’t you can’t trade until after after the uh after the draft so so the Kings could definitely draft King missed the playoffs and where the Hawks [ __ ] until otherwise yeah because because they might not have their 2025 pick and you can’t trade 24 and 25 you can trade 24 once it becomes a player and that’s what we’re talking about so they could package the the number 13 pick with their 2027 their 29 and their 31 and basically roll up four first round picks it’s just that first one go there come on down yeah that first one is going to be um it’s going to be you’re you’re drafting a player for that team and then trading the player so but is is that something that um and and I guess it kind of depends we’ve seen it both ways but is that something that um we as the public would know draft night but it can’t be official until whenever it can’t be official until the moratorium is lifted so the moratorium it used to be the first six days so the free agency you can start negotiating on June 30th now at like 3 o’clock in the afternoon or whatever it is the and that’s like am I wrong is that like a Sunday or a Saturday or something absurd like that Sunday before I don’t know what it is this year it might be a Monday oh I don’t know it’s it’s a Sunday because I remember it is it’s it’s Sunday June 30th okay I remember thinking well that doesn’t help us no well I mean we might know the next day a whole lot of stuff oh yeah but we won’t get to break it live on the air no true suck it when we when we win by we won we won a prize break leag monk news yeah um claim to fame right there that’s it that’s it run it back that’s right yeah let’s report that one more time um yeah I mean so again you can’t announce formally announce a trade until after the the moratorium in so you have these days in negotiate and then it’s either the fifth or the sixth where the moratorium is lifted and that’s when everybody officially signs and any trade that happened that involved players like what we’re talking about officially becomes officially happens so it it’s part of the new the the new calendar year for the NBA begins July 1 that’s the first day of the calendar year and then everything that happens after that is the next season right anything before that is still playing out into your last year your last year sort of whatever um yeah so and someone asked like no I I haven’t heard that the kings are gonna trade for uh for Kyle kma we’re just talking here um no no what I would say is that like that’s probably around the value for him and actually it’s probably more than a lot of teams can give up for him uh and there is murmur out of Washington that they are interested in moving on from him they’re also I I know last season the Kings well last offseason the Kings did have conversations about kakma and they had conversations uh earlier than that about kakusa and whether he would fit with their with their current build and so like just putting two and two together like they’re these are going to be part of the conversations that pop up whether like the kings make a move like that or not who knows but uh they certainly like it’s a possibility that they could entertain that well look this is this also something that we kind of talked about a couple weeks ago we just reading the tea leaves not not reporting but we talked about mik Brown guy No Cap we talked about who’s a Mike Brown grind and all this other stuff or who’s a Monty McNair guy kind of feels like Kyle kosma would fit the mold just based off the fact that I don’t know maybe he’s tried to get him two or three times already he tried to get him uh tried to trade for him yeah um at least kicked the tires I don’t know I don’t know who said no but kicked the tires on them in free agency and I don’t know maybe discussions at trade deadline I don’t know but here we are again possibly looking at Kyle kosma again at the very least even if even if none of that other stuff fits right like anything uh the the free agency or trade deadline or anything he did say hey I’d like to trade for this player at least one time so he did like him at least that one time so it’s not inconceivable that he might like him still yeah and like look I I don’t love Kyle kusma as like an end all Beall player to make the Kings like an instant you know like Championship Contender but he does have a very nice skill set he can shoot the three ball he can rebound really well for power forward uh he can run the floor really well um there are a lot of things to like about the way he plays and and how he might fit with the Kings there’s questions about whether you know he’s fully committed to like winning and you know especially if he had other opportunities last offseason and chose to go back to Washington which was never going to be a winner that that could be a concern for sure but at the same time like the Kings are at a point where he would be a talent upgrade and you have to look at Talent upgrades as long as you can fit him within your team and your system and the biggest thing with kusma is he has three years left and it’s a declining scale contract that goes from 23 to 21 to 19 yep and that’s just like oh my goodness really and and in those years he’s like 29 30 and 31 so those that’s a really really good you’re getting a guy in his prime in a declining scale contract it’s basically the same exact thing the Kings did with with Harrison Barnes a few years ago and I don’t think the Kings need to attempt to acquire a singular player that I mean it would be great if they could acquire a singular player that makes them a championship Contender I think they need to try to acquire players that make them better Kyle kosman and I think you said this a second AG Kyle kosma makes them better of course depending on what the deal is like Kyle kosma makes them better but you would hope along with the process there’s potentially more things for Monty MCN to do this offseason and headed into the trade line that continues to make this team better yeah I mean it wasn’t a single PJ Washington trade that made Dallas better like they did a number of things uh that that made them better it wasn’t just the Rudy gobear deal that made Minnesota better it was the Mike Conley deal that made Minnesota better like there’s a lot of different things that happen for these teams that build themselves up build themselves build themselves up and and and the Kings have taken those steps right the uh the the domas step is is is the biggest one man recent and Malik monk will go a long way but there’s there’s a lot you got to do along the way yeah I I think that you know again there’s going to be all kinds of different players that are available this offseason that we don’t know about but but this team has to improve the talent level like you can’t just expect like a coach to get more out of a team like he can get a little bit more out of the team he can he might be able Mike Brown might be able to push his team up to 49 50 wins we don’t know um barring injuries and and just flat out missing free throws in crucial games in crucial moments of games that cost you um what you you should know is that that the talent level is at a certain point where you need more you need more of something and I I don’t know that we we think we know what that is is length athleticism more physicality it’s why even like the valent Tunis things come valent chunis things thing comes up and I’m like hey yeah I would take valent chunis um I don’t want valent chunis playing 35 minutes a night unless deonis sabonis is is out for a couple of weeks with an injury but he brings not only you know like rebounding and size and some defensive Acumen and some scoring potential and rebounding but he brings an attitude that changes the players around him like he’s he can be an enforcer and that’s something this team needs and I think they’re you can keep going around the the backourt need more size right like we looked at some of the guys that uh who who did the the Kings according to I think werman had um had the Kings bringing in the kid from Providence uh why am I drawing a blank now um anyway what’s that the big kid no no they had him I’ve got it right here they uh they’ve brought in Devin Carter for an interview um and you know Devin Carter is like gritty and can hit a three ball uh he he’s a great defender but he measured in at 62 and in a quarter at the at the combine with a almost six foot n wingspan but still we’re talking about an undersized player and for for like a shooting guard so I don’t know it it’s definitely a uh you’re in a situation where you have to you have your basic core guys that you know that you want to be there but you have to up the value of all the players around those guys and I’m not sure how you do it with every position but I I certainly think you could get a bigger backup point guard I think you need a a younger maybe more versatile uh like backup center you need three and d uh guys at both the the three and the four and then you know you can you can Bank on a guy like Keon Ellis if you want but I think we can all look at Keon Ellis and go okay look he hasn’t really proven that he’s a NBA starting shooting guard on a on a good team yet we think he has sort of like the the mold that you’re looking for but you still have to head your bet there with something else at that position so I I think that there’s just a lot a lot that the Kings need to do here in this offseason as far as assessment and being really really honest about what some of these guys are and what they aren’t one of the the it’s really early too so you know know that we can maybe get this answer a little later a little bit more clear of an answer but do you think Kobe Jones is a part of the rotation next year I I I really liked every time he he got an opportunity to play it feels like the the thought last year was as good as he may look in whatever appearance let him be in the g-league and get the Reps that way and do they maybe look at him like they look at Keon where I can’t remember if it was two or three years I think it was just two years but Keon took that time in the g-league and eventually got to the point where now he’s an NBA rotational player do you think next year they look at Kobe as possibly an NBA rotational player yeah I’m not sure yet um like I think we’ve talked about this a little bit but like look the Kings like Colby Jones they do like i’ I’ve had conversations with them they like the player they think that there’s a possibility he could be an NBA ball player um and and I think what you’re going to want to see is what he looks like after the summer like how much time does he spend in Sacramento how much time does he spend working with spe specific development coaches and getting better uh Keon Ellis was undrafted not this last season but the summer before he only spent one year in the G league and then the goal well the idea this year was to put him in the G league but it didn’t ever really work out he he was with the parent Club from almost the start of the season because he earned his way into that position during training camp and then he kept getting better and better every time he got opportunities the problem is for for uh Kobe Jones is that Keon Ellis exists and so I would like to tell you that kobby could potentially jump in and be part of the rotation but there’s going to be a key on Ellis that he has to get through now and I don’t think that there’s enough room I I don’t think you can walk into the season with a backcourt of dearon fox with a backup being Kobe Jones and Keon Ellis and Malik monk at the two that doesn’t that’s to me that’s like pretty risky because you’re going with two young players who are are still unproven there will come a point where we know that Keon Ellis is either like truly a rotational piece long term or not and hopefully it will be like early in the season so far he’s shown me yeah I’m willing to even go as far as giving him uh like let him compete for the starting job coming out a training camp at the shooting guard spot but you need to figure out who and what he is in your rotation before you worry about Colby and Colby might spend a whole another year you sign Colby to a four-year deal at a minimum scale as a second round pick and and the last two years are team options but you can take your time with him you can let him like again grow in the g-league become more of like the ball handler or more of a point guard at the g- league level and then when there’s opportunities bring him up and see what he’s got is that what you think they primarily want from him the ability to be like a ball handler I think he’s a jack of all trades I think he can play the one the two and the three and his versatility is really nice and you know there’s always a case where there’s always a possibility that he develops into like a Christian Brown like type player where you know again the energy he plays with uh his he’s Fearless like both going for rebounds and going to the basket but also shooting threes like there’s a lot to like about his game um but you still need to what he does has to fit into the concept of of what you’re doing as a team and as of right now I think he would still be a concept breaker he’s still a guy who who’s kind of freelancing and doing his own thing about half the time and he’s got some potential but like he he needs more game time more floor time I I I like his game a lot man I’m really excited to see where he ends up um because almost every time he he stepped on the floor last year he he impressed me I liked what he brought to the table whether it was him getting three points or 13 points but just his energy his his understanding of the game just his natural understanding natural basketball IQ um I it it it’s it’s shine bright for me I I I saw you know often so um I just wondered if he if he had an opportunity to crack the rotation on a regular basis this this upcoming season yeah I think like the style of player that that I compared him to early on is like sort of that Manu job like just does everything and some of it’s sloppy some of it’s a little and I’m not saying he’s as good as as Manu and we’ll have the same type of career but you never know like how a player develops he also a little bit like John Barry so you know like a guy who plays with his hair on fire the whole time and and does some good work by doing that he he Causes Chaos on the court and you know you need one or two of those guys in in your either rotation or on your bench that you can go throw at somebody for a few minutes here and there you think he could help I think he could yeah do you think the 13th pick could help if it’s don’t connect I mean if if it’s a project guy I I you know I don’t know but I I look at a guy and like I said uh Kevin oconnell um was the one who who mocked Vikings coach yeah 49ers uh oh no that’s the Chargers uh coach I was the 49ers defensive assistant defensive coordinator is is the guy who was the Chargers coach right yes yeah I forgot his name the associate head coach yeah Staley Brandon Staley Staley I was like what was his name um but he’s the one in in His Latest mock has D connect Fallen to 13 and going to the Kings okay and you like I said you’ve heard me talk about it I I said this was a top five guy in this draft yeah I I I’m a big believer in his game and and how it uh translates to the to the NBA I feel like he’s like a almost like a France Vagner type uh player a little smaller than him but in a little better natural score but I could see him coming in the which the Kings drafted frons well you know yeah shout out go Blue it’s it’s all fun Jesse’s making us end the show so have a great weekend we will see you guys here Monday beginning at 10: a.m. with the Insiders here on Sacramento sports leader ESPN 1320
