Latest Vikings News & Nuggets w/The Purple Persuasion

all right welcome back to one bar and L show one bar we got Justin from the purple persuasion in the house they are almost at 7,000 followers on Twitter uh I’m guessing a majority of our viewers are probably already uh following you but if you haven’t get your butt over there absolutely they’re gonna get to 10K before season before theal season that’s the game that’s the game but we got some nuggets let’s Dive Right into these things so what do we got first we got Jefferson Justin Jefferson Floral uh he’s not uh he’s not being very nice to some of these beat Riders yeah that was a good one though obviously Justin Jeffers gets paid Monday uh big money 35 mil per year most guaranteed money that everybody else got so uh happy he’s here we don’t have to deal with that drama anymore but you know Florio continues to Double Down uh and I always you know people hate Florio but I always like him he’s he’s entertaining he keeps people engaged and uh what we found interesting though is he seems to still double down on the Vikings wanting to Trey Jefferson and them still exploring for Malik neighbors I think I mean a lot of it it’s like you know the Vikings are not going to say that they’re you know they’re going to do it or anything like that because they Inked him it’s kind of hindsight 2020 at this point but he continued to double down and I thought it was really interesting if you were to read that full article there was a about the last three paragraphs he spent on the beat writers and how they shield things and um kind of how they’re puppets I think it was he actually or parrot was the word that he used that they were parrot for the team and I do think there is truth to that I think they do have limitations of what they can and can’t write about um I know I’ve talked to Dustin Baker a lot about this too about like a press pass and what it takes to get that and how difficult it is so these people they they have certain criteria or they lose their press pass credentials to interview and do stuff with the team so you know they do have some guidelines that they do have to follow with what they can and can’t report um Florio you know Amplified it and I’ve never really seen like a national media person really Target beat writers like that so I was real fascinated with that and obviously we played some nuggets so that this past week but he continues to double down he’s saying the beat writers were shielding it and the in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter he’s on the team till 2028 which is the most important spot or part so um hats off to Jefferson and how he handled the whole thing and you know he didn’t pull a digs or a Randy Moss kind of you know back in the day so happy he’s here but I thought that was a fun little nugget that’s kind of worth uh kind of kind of keeping an eye on there I guess yeah I mean he love or hate Florio he’s doing something right because everybody’s always talking about him everybody’s always engaging and he does hit on some things so yeah it doesn’t matter if they’re shielding or not the end game is that Justin Jefferson is here and lus and I were getting into this and it’s like if the Vikings even were trying to do it they’re not gonna of course exactly they’re not gonna say so it is what it is I mean uh he’s here floral will continue to get under everybody’s skin and I want a front row C to it and he’s also tweeting some of your guys stuff for yeah he G us some love Yeah but so we I actually long story short I knew the Jefferson deal was going down on Saturday and then I got the full details on Sunday um how to keep it under tight ropes we kind of were teasing it a little bit uh but yeah Florio I think knew too because he kind of hinted that on Sunday and then obviously Monday morning all the Neals everything dropped there and uh he’s happy he’s on the team but you know flor’s got connection so I think with people saying he doesn’t know anything he’s got smoke up his ass all that kind of stuff that I see in the mentions it’s he’s got some takes and you know he does play a lot of different sides and you know eventually some of those do hit but um he knows what he’s doing he know know what’s doing you know for 20 years he knows what he’s doing in the where he’s been at since where he started it from the ground up it’s pretty impressive so I respect Florio for that you know I don’t always enjoy his takes sometimes or the drama that he builds but sometimes in this offseason you need a little drama and you need a little uh stuff to talk about so it’s fun well stuff to talk about uh let’s talk about Sam darnold Sam darnold just lighting it up all damn week lighting it up all off seon uh is this Fool’s Gold what are we going to see here but he’s doing all the right things that’s all that matters he’s got the leg up you know he’s been in the league a few years um obviously he struggled we all kind of know the stam darnold story from number three to being on his fourth team now um but he worked with Shanahan last year you know Kevin oconnell has got the whole Shanahan type scheme so it’s going to be a lot easier for him to learn the Playbook than it is for uh JJ McCarthy which representing the new J.J McCarthy Jersey by the way damn so that showed up that showed up this week on the on Monday actually was a good sweet sweet day actually but going back to darnold I think it’s a um I don’t I think it was pelis it wasn’t parisel it was Rapaport who kind of put out a video saying that uh darnold is kind of like the offseason star he always shines but then once he’s thrown into a game he gets that pressure on him that he just turns into a pumpkin so um I do think that’s a stigma that he’s had and he’s gonna have to break it I think he’s gonna be the starter week one how long he hands holds on to that I don’t know at this stage uh but seems like he’s doing well he’s sitting receivers and the players seem to be you know speaking highly of him but that’s kind of just common sense at this point and I don’t think a a player’s going to be like yeah he’s suck it in practice or anything like that uh to the media but in the grand scheme I think he’s doing well at least the beat writers are all saying that he’s striving he’s calm he’s consistent um which is a little bit different than what they’re kind of saying about McCarthy so uh a lot to go you know it’s you know they’ve only had limited access for certain OTAs in mini camp um but we’ll get a lot more kind of a tell and training camp and when the fans can start seeing and putting everything together yeah that’s uh that’s when shit’ll hit the fan I’m I I I’m impartial as far as how the quarterback shakes out this year if it’s Sam Dar I mean obviously we all want to see JJ McCarthy course it would just be fun but if it’s Sam darnold and McCarthy doesn’t touch the field once like I’m Not Gon to care I’m not gonna well we all root we’re all Vikings fans at least the true fans are are fans and we’re all going to root for whatever quarterback they throw out there week one for the whole season uh I do think they’re shielding McCarthy I wrote about it I’ve tweeted about it um I think Ben Gosling kind of was the first one that hinted at it that I was listening to on access Vikings they’re really they’re really that you know the the coaches especially aren’t talking about him too much you can tell that the social media account is barely posting anything McCarthy wise we still haven’t gotten the JJ to JJ connection which is just mind-blowing to me even though it’s in training camp Ori Camp so I I think they’re they’re definitely trying to temper expectations and we’re just gon to have to roll with it as fans I mean and if it comes down to it would you rather have JJ McCarthy play the whole season and let’s say we go five and 12 I think and just and his his confidence and everything just is mean that that can that messes with a rookie quarterback for sure like if we’re gonna if we’re gonna be a like a seven and 10 team whatever I’d rather it’s be Sam darnold I mean get over the hump McCarthy comes back next year he’s 22 years old got plenty of time plenty of times till four years on the contract and then they could even extend him if he’s showing like that he’s worth it and they could even milk two more years of that so they easily have at least five even six years of like solid cap hits for him so I’m not real worried about it and I think the schedule’s pretty rough that first you know through the buy even post buy those two games it’s pretty brutal I think throwing McCarthy into that is just probably not a good idea anyways and you know say you were one or two and seven or something like that then maybe we could explore throwing it in there put him in when the season’s already and he has no pressure uh but we’ll see may maybe Darnell lights it up and you know kind of re resurrects his career like Baker uh did with the Buccaneers this year and he was on his four team too so it’s like you know maybe they just need a right system some actual competent offensive skill players around him and you know he puts up decent you know 4,000 yards 30 touchdowns 1015 interceptions I think that’s that could win us a lot of games all right well just quick on McCarthy we already mentioned it but uh he’s at a little bit of an up and down as any rookie quarterback will but it sounds like he got a little bit better on Thursday a little bit better showing yeah he did so yeah there was I think the media had they had full access for camp this week they only had one in the past two weeks for the OTAs so they really have only had about five days of for them looking at McCarthy um obviously the team’s not saying a whole lot about him but yeah it sounds like he was pretty inconsistent he’s got a big arm he can hit those deep throws but it sounds like he needs that I think we talked about on the show too like kind of a he needs instead of a fast ball he needs a curveball he needs a knuckle ball so those intermediate in intermediate to short throws that I think he needs to dial up his touches a little bit um I think I can’t remember if it was Gosling or or Lewis mentioned that he had like three straight incompletions which is or three balls hit the ground which is kind of rough but sounds like Thursday was his best day and he was lighting it up I think there was a sweet little throw to um I think it was Theo Jackson he was throwing some bombs to sounds like he’s really has a connection with tunan the tight end so uh sounds like he maybe he’s improving and things are clicking and it’s just it’s mini camp you know they’re he’s trying new things new footwork new uh you know it’s trial and error you don’t want to just be you know safe the whole time you got to try things what can I get away with what can I not get away with try this footwork try this movement and stuff like that so this is the time in season to do it um not in the regular season you’ll be trying that so I’m not worried uh even if he doesn’t play the whole season it’s not the end of the world uh obviously we all as fans want to see them like we said but uh I think it’s going to be a slow development they’re preaching patience and um I think that’s kind of the route they’re going to take even through training camp and into the regular season yeah absolutely you mentioned uh Bob t our new Phenom tight end just ripping it up cing everything toet Taps he’s looking like Bob tundy of 2017 baby uh I I admittedly am getting way too excited for Robert tonan uh but I do think he’s gonna be catching some balls really and often uh until hackinson gets back I think so too I with all these tight end I think they mooved canil Harry to tight end as well so there to me there’s they’ve gone after a lot of tight ends this offseason in some way shape or form which signals I think hackinson is going to miss at least half the season is my guess I think the earliest he’s back as post by um you know after we get back from London uh and you know I think Tan’s good I think the Packers and the Bears didn’t really use him a whole lot I think that the Packers he was a little more uh you know better I guess for them or at least statistic wise um but the Bears I don’t think used them a whole lot he was only at like he like really low snap rates and field is and that type of quarterback to really like use the tight end a whole lot so I wouldn’t reach too much into his historical aspect but I think he’s going to get get a lot of touch this year I think Josh Oliver is not the pass catching tight end he’s more of the Run blocking extension of the o line um I think Mt and him are gonna get a good good amount of reps and I’m actually interested in Harry man I think he’s got the size he’s got the speed you know I I think that’s a sneaky under the radar Type move that could be that could pay big dividends I think so I’m excited about that but Tan’s gonna get a lot of work early in the season till Hawk’s back for sure yeah he wants to go on top I mean he was he was one of the top tight ends back when he was with with Rogers and the Bears he went to no man’s land uh so he I think he wants I think he’s got a little chip on his shoulder he’s getting paid pretty much nothing nothing and uh he’s coming in as an underdog guy so I would love to see him get a touchdown or two early in the season uh wrapping it up let’s go to the secondary cornerback safties a lot of chatter going on there with Lis Cen is gonna make it Andrew Booth uh Doogie was saying some things and then guys like sha Griffin just ripping it up yeah well we’ll start in the the furthest back in the secondary I think scene is for my face I think he’s a I think he’s very much on the block of getting cut not making the roster um I know Doogie had mentioned on Scoops this past week that he feels at this stage he really emphasized that like as of today he feels a little bit more confident about him making the roster and talked about how he does not think Booth is gonna make it but we’ll get to that in a second uh but I think it’s a long shot he’s he’s buried deep there uh Jackson and Warder up there on him so he’s probably the last safety on the roster and I think they’re going to have to bring another cornerback or two in there I think they’re going to go with maybe five safeties instead of six like they did last year so it’s it’s a deep room as of now I think the only way that they keep seeing is maybe they think Smith retires next year um I can’t remember Ward or somebody’s going to be a restricted free agent uh Bam’s also going to be an unrestricted free agent if they don’t extend him this off season so that room could get real thin next year but as of now he’s he’s the low man on the totem pole but we’ll see how he does in camp scene has to prove that he can play special teams if I he didn’t even get special teams action he was getting I mean but that’s the only way he makes a team in my mind because if they cut him um I mean obviously they’re eating some cash there and at this point maybe they don’t even care but if he can be a special teamer I think he I think he can sneak on the whole know new kickoff format I think it’s not the same so it’s like certain skill sets are going to be better for the new kickoff format I think that’s going to be trial and error I think for a lot of teams for most part I could even see teams just like punting on kickoffs and just letting team start at the 30 and not dealing with potential kick returns or big returns and stuff so that’s going to be an exciting thing like early on in the year for a lot of teams to figure out but regarding the secondary and the quarterback situation sounds like sha Griffin’s really dominating I know Lewis had a lot of high praise for him um you know he’s able to play on the outside and they I know Flores ideally wants to put Byron Murphy Jr into the slot and then that kind of leaves an open outside spot too for certain packages in the nickel um whether that’s Blackman or Caleb Evans or Kyrie Jackson I think there’s a lot of that’s some good competition I think going into Camp uh and yeah boo I think he’s the odd man out of this whole thing I would pretty much put a lot of money on him not making the roster I think he’s buried he’s proven that he doesn’t know what he’s doing uh the light bulb thing we talked about a couple weeks ago I talked about with leagus I think he there’s just too much there he’s broken and there’s you know mclan showing some praise as an undrafted free agent as a quarterback so it’s and he was getting some starting reps this week at sounds like so if Booth isn’t there and he’s in the practice side field it’s it’s a long shot for him too and he already proven that he can’t play special teams either so uh I think that the cornerback room and the safety room are going to be interesting battles this this upcoming offseason into the training camp looking back at the first two picks quacy scene and Booth B yeah the whole 2022 draft was yeah probably not great H Nick Nick Muse is gonna make up for that he’s gonna C I don’t know if Nick M is gonna make the roster either we’ll see it makes Tai Chandler and that’s probably about you can get out of that draft class yeah was not fantastic but we’ve made up for it since then everything’s looking good and those those are pretty much the biggest news and nugs one last one I’ll throw in yeah throw it in is just Jaylen Naylor yeah sick missed all whatever this whole week I mean and it maybe if with him it’s just bad luck I mean he is always missing time whether he’s sick whether it’s an injury critical times too it’s not like at some point you just got to be like dude we got other guys stepping up we’re moving on yeah I saw that today I only saw that he was out Thursday I didn’t actually didn’t even know that he was out Wednesday or Tuesday and Wednesday so he pretty much missed all of mini camp and he was dominating and OTAs this is what he does he shows like the speed he shows versatility um that he can catch you know he’s made some splashes in games when he’s very limited you know his time even in the regular season but he’s just one of those players that just can’t break the illnesses the absences from practices whether it’s um you know he’s got an injury which has been most of his NFL career and then I don’t know what sickness he has that he couldn’t play but in these critical times where he needs to Showcase his talent to be that wide wide receiver three he’s just not making the case but I think he’s another one on the chopping block of the 2022 class too from quacy so yeah I mean it’s it’s bad luck I mean clearly the guy wants to be alter he must have been on the cusp of his pants or something the fact that he just could not go out there he knows I mean he knows how important this is and there’s a spot to be had it just sucks that we’re not uh as of now anyways seeing when he can bring that maybe maybe he breaks the the Jinx or whatever he’s got going on and can play a full training camp I think if he misses any single time in training camp he’s he’s on the chopping block pop some em modium Mr Naylor we want to see you out there uh those are the news and nugs Justin once again appreciate you hopping on persuasion hit him up on Twitter give him a follow do it and uh we’ll be back next week sounds good thank you guys so much thanks for having me on

  1. lol Florio is so desperate for approval. He wants everybody to believe that his trade take was true 😆. MOVE ON

  2. Darnold will be better than Average. The only thing I dislike about Sam is in his interview he says Um um um every other word. He drives me nuts.

  3. How does Rapaport explain Darnold's 4-2 finish to the 2022 season then?
It seems everyone remembers Sam's bad start to his career with the Jets, but is happy to forget that Kirk's first 3 seasons were arguably WORSE. Kirk went 2-7 in his starts, throwing more INTs than TDs 19 vs 18, and had a completion rate of only 52% one season., and that was when Kirk was protected behind RGIII, and Sam was thrown into the fire!
Kirk was a 7-10 win player for 8 seasons including 4 with the Vikes until KOC, JJ and TJ came along. Darnold went 8-9 with that Panthers roster and coaching set up, including nearly stealing a game off a full strength Vikes team with a 98 yard 8 point drive after the 2 minute warning.
Sam also did something with the Panthers, that Kirk was never able to do with the Vikes – went toe to toe with Dak in Dallas losing 42-36 in a shootout. Next start the Darnold and the Panthers led the Eagles until a literal last minute tush push. And they demolished the Lions scoring 30+ in three quarters, the week before that Lions team beat the Vikes comfortably in Detroit. The Vikes were never competitive with the Cowboys or Eagles, and never dominated the Lions in Kirk's entire tenure.

Most folks argued that Kirk was the reason the Vikes would never win a SB. Kirk only own over the fan base in his 1.5 seasons under KOC. Why couldn't Darnold be at least as good?

  4. It takes 6-9 weeks to change a habit, so all this micro assessment of McCarthy is OTT. It will probably take JJ 2 or 3 months for some of the fine tuning, that McCown and KOC are doing, to start feeling natural.

  5. You can really tell who knows very little about Josh Oliver, when they call him strictly a blocking TE. He was known as a receiving TE, coming into the league and had to learn how to block lol

  6. It's only minicamp. Not even training camp. Why are we even talking about individuals.
I could easily see them roster 6 Safeties and 7 CBs with Hitman and Shaq potentially gone next year. Signing Risner might mean that they only roster 9 Linemen, which might enable them to keep an extra DB or two. It will probably depend on who they think they can get on to the PS.

  7. Onebar, Allen is a prime example of what Florio and the PP are talking about He's so damn careful about how he questions the players, it's a joke. Yet, like his deceased big paly darkstar he "bigtimes" all us listeners/fans. Both are all REAL PHONIES—they think we don't see this, but the joke is actually on them. Their interviews are basically worthless!!

  8. Hi O&L, I'd like to see Darnold play this season, let the rookie learn/train in the background. Considering the lack of talent he's had to work with, and he still did reasonably well, I think he has a lot of upside with the Vikings. A lot of targets to throw to, a good run game, a semi-solid offensive line, and we can't forget a good defense. I hope it works out for him, I'd hate to see the rookie get thrown in with the sharks right away. SKOL and Rock On!
