Carlton Carrington and Tristan Da Silva can make immediate impact for New Orleans Pelicans

we’ve primarily looked at big men in the leadup to the NBA draft but the Pelicans have other needs too and I’ll tell you why Carlton carington Tristan D Silva and Johnny Fury should all be on the Pelicans radar it’s Monday’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s [Music] go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans at NBA part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison at Nola Jake on Twitter here with youall on this Monday tipping off another week’s worth of shows we are going to get into some draft talk I’ve got a great trade Target Thursday up might even have a guest on Friday show to dive into more NBA draft stuff because we’re less than two weeks away now I think I forget the exact date of the draft but we are coming up on it and we want to cover everything that you need to know it’s going to be on June 26 so right around two weeks or so away from today so we do need to talk all draft and other things we’ve done that a lot here we’ve talked about the big men that the Pelicans could look at because that’s the most glaring need but I want to give you three other prospects and we’ll get into other ones including other big men later in the week too because there’s more than just big men that they need and it depends on what they do this off season they might need to go an entirely different Direction with the 21st overall pick so we’re going to break down a couple of different players for you in today’s show in bub Carrington who I like a lot but there’s a big hesitation on my part Tristan D Silva who I think could contribute immediately to this team like near starting level contributing right away and then Johnny Fury if you want some more shooting that could be your guy and kind of a Do-it all guy as well today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs which helps you find quality candidates you want to talk to faster post your job for free at linkedin.com lockon NBA that’s linkedin.com lockon MBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply and of course thank you for making locked on Pelicans your first list in today and every day we’re here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast subscribe wherever you get your podcast join over 10,000 Pelicans fans on YouTube as well and be C every day that means you listen Monday through Friday so let’s get into the first well before we even get into the first Prospect one of the things I think we got to look at here is the Pelican salary cap situation and where they stand and I just close my cap sheet it’s fine right now they have 13 guys if you count the 21st pick on the roster and that basically means you need to fill out the rest of it and they don’t have a ton of flexibility to spend they can maybe get one one guy maybe two with their mid-level exception but it also means that if you trade Brandon Ingram and send out more players than you’re bringing back you need guys who are going to be able to contribute maybe right away outside of the center spot depending on what you do with that because you’re losing a dude like Naji Marshall likely I should say losing a guy like Naji Marshall and that hurts your depth a little bit so getting players particularly at the 21st overall pick that can step in and have some sort of role immediately I do think is rather important for this team it’s then on you know the coaching staff to play that guy but you still need to fill out the rest of the roster and you know you potentially might even cut a guy whether it’s Jeremiah Robinson Earl or somebody else if you just don’t feel that they’re going to be able to contribute in the way that you want which means you need even more players on this team we’ll get a little bit more into draft philosophy in the next segment here but I want to look at a guy Carlton bub Carrington out of Pittsburgh who is a freshman here here who is climbing up draft boards a little bit here he’s got good size 6’4 essentially with a good Wings span of 68 and he’s young he won’t uh he’ll be right around 19 when the season starts and for Pittsburgh last year this dude was pretty much a bucket getter the lead guy on their offense as and tasked with just making shots and that’s kind of what he does one of the things you notice about him immediately when watching the film is this guy is very much a pull-up threat and a playmaker and that’s what you’re looking looking for there’s a lot of creativity to his game there’s an asterisk with that hold on though you know he’s got a decent enough handle his crossover is very very good and enough athleticism to get by guys on the perimeter and start a drive to the rim and that’s where he’s most deadly not finishing at The Rim because he’s actually bad at that but pulling up and shooting a mid-range jumper and he makes these with remarkable ease and like every kind of shot contested he can make it step back absolutely fade away no problem off balance the dude has it in his bag he’s a mid-range shot maker there’s kind of the rub with bub oh did that in the moment that wasn’t bad that was actually pretty bad hold on to that thought for a minute here though but because his shot making is so good one of the things you noticed about him in college was drawing two guys to the ball pretty often that’s something I’ve said this team really needs they need another player that draws two to the ball in the way that you know Zion Williams does we’ve seen it from Brandon Ingram that is not exactly it teams are willing to let him take those inefficient mid-range like Carrington’s shots and that’s I think a big part of the concern but when he does draw that Defender he’s very good at finding open teammates and dishing out assists 4.1 per game last season that’s a decent College number so when you watch him with that size with the kind of Pull-Up threat that he could be if he extends that shot out to three-point range that’s a pretty scary guy a guy with the ball in his hands who’s a threat to shoot it at any given moment that’s the type of player that you do have defenses pay attention to always here’s the issues with him is that he’s not a good three-point shooter 32.2% in his uh one year in college and then when you look at his free throw rate which is more indicative of shooting ability the NBA level 782 it’s not an elite number it’s not bad it likely means at the NBA level with he works on his shot he can get that threo percentage up but I don’t really see him becoming a 40% shooter from Deep now not everyone needs to be I like Trey young because he draws through the ball he’s a shooter there’s Court gravity and Carrington if he does work on that shot I think will develop that but then he maybe becomes a little bit one-dimensional this is not a guy who really attacks the rim whatsoever he doesn’t really get into the paint at all and is a below the rim finisher he doesn’t have the UPS to really get up there and finish Above the Rim which is a lot easier for you to score and when he runs into kind of the tight confines of the paint he really seems to fall apart and you see a lot of turnovers there so he needs to get stronger to be able to finish through contact finish at The Rim a little bit and develop a three-point shot that’s that’s a lot that’s a lot isn’t it right like that’s something that really concerns me he has good length I think he’ll be an above average Defender at the NBA level but you’re asking him to develop a three-point shot and get better at finishing in the rim the reason I I mention him here is I think he could be a backup point guard pretty much right away you know with that second unit you can have those those midrange jumpers a little bit more I think and if it’s drawing Defenders to him and he’s creating for others you’ll see units with him with Trey and some others out there and that could really potentially work with CJ potentially right you know he doesn’t need to be Elite if you’re coming off the bench and playing against backups and for a team that could use a guy that could contribute right away and still needs that guard spot when you don’t necessarily have the money to go get an elite backup guard like tus Jones maybe bub Carrington is the way to go I’ve seen his draft range kind of be all over the place it looks like it could be the tail end of the lottery to potentially you know the mid to late 20s so it’s an option I think for New Orleans again he is good size and that’s I think something they desperately need with a with a guard and something that they could address in this draft The Sweet Spot in this draft I definitely think is that like 15 to 25 range in the first round bub Carrington maybe he’s going to go a little bit higher but I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s available at 21 but I think they’re starting to become a lot more interest in him in the draft so maybe not going to be there but an option for the Pelicans if you want a reli you an immediate backup point guard I definitely think he’s the guy that could do it if you want someone that can contribute right away no matter what that’s Tristan D Silva let’s talk about him out of Colorado coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s I know the names that y’all want to hear trust me I listen I pay attention we’re going to cover them all but I wanted to give us a break and look at some other things and allow us to talk a little bit of draft philosophy too and I think when you look at a guy like Tristan D Silva that’s that’s where the conversation gets kind of interesting when you get into draft philosophies you know when you’re drafting in the top five and we did the show last week for the every dayers when you look at like the the percentage of guys who become Allstars like once you get out of that top five it it knows Dives but you’re not only drafting for All-Star potential I think people can fall into that trap of like Boomer bust in the NBA draft a lot of people say it’s a crapshoot right you never know how it’s going to turn out and that’s true but sometimes you also just need players that can can contribute and do good things for you and 21 that’s sometimes what you need to do drafting in the top five like yeah try and kind of go you know most potential even if they might not reach that because you need star players to win in the league it’s truly that simple but when you have a decent enough team when you’re you know it depends on what you’re trying to accomplish usually if you’re drafting in the top five you’re a bad team right you need to go through a rebuild a retool you need to do some other things and you tend to go on like pure potential so you get guys that are young a lot of time to grow and develop but that isn’t always the way that you want to go and I want to point to a guy that was drafted two years ago who’s played well against New Orleans and that’s on the Sacramento Kings and that’s Keegan Murray this is a guy who was older when he was drafted you know was 22 I believe and that doesn’t necessarily mean you you want to go after that guy he was like nearly 22 when he was drafted but he was taken fourth overall and has become a solid contributor to that Sacramento Kings team basically starting the entirety of his career from game one he’s come off the bench twice in two seasons 155 starts out of 157 opportunities and it’s just a solid player and we saw him hit five threes against New Orleans even somewhat recently towards the end of the year there’s something to be said for just getting a dude who can go out and play is Keegan Murray ever going to become an All-Star like absolutely not in my opinion you could see that from when you know you were looking at him going into the draft but at the same point he was a guy that was going to contribute on both sides of the basketball and just help you he was going to make shots he was never going to really make big mistakes or anything like that there’s something to be said for those kind of players and I think when you look at guys in the draft the one that really screams that to me here is Tristan D Silva out of Colorado he’s a senior he’s 23 he’s older but this is a guy that is going to contribute at the NBA level to whatever team drafts him I don’t know if he’s like a Bonafide starter on day one but I think he’s one of the safer guys that you could draft in the NBA to just like raise your ceiling you know you look at or sorry raise your floor you look at ceiling and floor you want guys that have a huge ceiling so you just go up and up and up there’s something to be said for taking guys that have a high floor too and you know what they’re going to give you the draft is a crap shoot and you need to win don’t don’t you know take the risk necessarily and I think the Silva is a guy that’s going to really be able to help he’s got good size he’s over 68 with a 610 Wings spin 16 points per game last season almost 40% from three five rebounds 2.4 assists he’s a very good spot up three-point shooter and when you watched him play you could see it they just kick the ball out to him and he’s almost automatic every single time he can get to the rim he’s not an extremely athletic finisher you’re not going to lob the ball up to him I don’t see him playing in the pick and roll and when you look at him in kind of that lack of like Elite burst Elite athleticism he’s definitely more of a forward than a wing he can play on the wing a little bit too so he’s Limited in what he can do but do you need a guy to be your eighth man ninth man 10th Man like this is the dude to do it he’s also a good passer and very versatile like that again 2.4 assists per game last year which for not starting point guard or someone like that is pretty useful and so he’ll make the right passes the ball won’t hit his hands and just stick and when you watch him play at Colorado he can get out on the break and lead your fast break something that New Orleans wants to do so him being a very good Defender where he can switch and play out there on the perimeter and try and force Steals and then lead the fast break himself or be an advantageous part of the fast break that’s the type of player that I think fits New Orleans really really well he’s never going to be an All-Star he’s never going to be an All-Star in the NBA but he’s a guy that you’re going to like having on your team is just going to do a lot of those sorts of things and I think that’s really what you’re you’re looking for here you know he shot the three ball at 40% on almost five attempts per game his free throw percentage was 83 and a half perc like that number is pretty good he’s lacks rebounding really if you’re looking for kind of like one thing for him that’s really a big knock on him is he doesn’t get to the free throw line a ton and he doesn’t rebound particularly well probably makes him more of a backup than a starter I think but this is a guy that I think could get close to 40% in the NBA and has done such a good job of playing and being as consistent as possible I think is an important thing he only had one game this season two games this season where he failed to score in double digits that’s a useful player to have on your team he’s older so the upside is limited yes but sometimes you just need dudes who are going to contribute if we are looking for a replacement for Naji Marshall I think this is the type of guy that would be a really good cheap option to do that he’s going to shoot the three he’s going to hustle for you he’s going to play good defense maybe not hustle for some of those boards that Nai did but he’s going to give you shades of that and maybe that develops over time so I understand in the draft a lot of people want to go high ceiling and I don’t think D Sila has the highest of ceilings right now though give me a Keegan Murray as kind of guy who’s going to step in know his role have a defined role and then just go and do it well because he plays defense right and because he can shoot he’s almost guaranteed to get like Willie Green’s approval here on him I think and so getting out there and being able to kind of contribute that way really works like you could have him you know run some of the point guard duties I think with that second unit he’s that good of a passer when you look at it with both his left and you know right hand as well that’s a really useful thing to try and see from a guy like this so on ball defense is good off ball defense is Good from him that’s going to fit what New Orleans wants I think he out of Colorado is going to be a really great player and I think years from now whoever drafts him is we’re going to look back and be like oh that dude was a steal like why didn’t he go higher he didn’t go higher because he’s 23 that’s like a death now in the NBA draft here but he’s going to be a very efficient useful player in that kind of wing forward spot and I think New Orleans could use a guy like that to replace Naji Marshall who’s likely going to be gone this off season get guys that are going to contribute right away because you’re trying to make a run for the postseason Keegan Murray was a starter on the third seed his rookie year I don’t think Silva is as good as Murray but I think he’s going to be able to help and contribute he could contribute to a playoff team which we hope the Pelicans are going to be next season he definitely can do that so coming up next what if you want to go with a little bit more upside and a guy that you think is going to be able to really shoot the ball extremely well and just do all those little things that is Johnny Fury who has probably the best name in this draft right like that’s definitely up there Johnny Fury let’s look at him out of Kansas coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs when you’re hiring for your small business you want to find quality professionals that lockon podcast Network your team every day second listen locked on Saints Ross Jackson breaking down everything black and gold make sure you check him out mini camp mandatory mini camp coming up I think he’s going to tell you what’s going on why the offense is looking good what the quarterback depth chart is going to be that’s all the stuff I care about you’re going to probably care about it too locked on Saints for your second listen today so we talked about how Naji Marshall is probably going to be gone you know he’s on a very cheap deal I I think like Detroit loves him and is going to probably try and bring him over there especially with you know um I just blanked on the Alaskan assassins actual name so cool Tran langon running their team now you know they need to spend some money they need to bring in a little bit of toughness he’s definitely a guy that’s going to be able to do that and probably wants to have a bigger role and he’s just never been paid in the NBA and whoever’s going to pay him is probably where he ends up as he should take that deal so you need those just do anything guys if you’re looking for a player in this draft that’s around the Pelicans range I think there’s other ones but if you’re looking for like a Willie Green kind of guy that play that I think he would really like Johnny Fury Kansas freshman is probably that guy and he has been one of the biggest risers in the pre-draft process you saw him going late in the first round but now he’s potentially going to go in the lottery with how well he’s doing so I don’t know if he’ll actually be there when it’s the Pelicans pick at 21 and he’s very raw with a lot of upside so kind of the opposite of a Tristan D Silva type of player but oh that potential there the shooting and kind of the do anything attitude he has is really great shade under 68 around a 68 wingspan so not bigger really than you know what what his height is here but he’s young 19 and a half right now average nine points per game but shot the ball extremely well in a very limited rooll 35.2% from three almost five rebounds per game as well he’s a catch and shoot threat this is a dude whether it’s deep behind the arc or in the corner or on Cuts whatever can get the three re ball and then shoot it and when you looked at Jordan Hawkins going into this last draft right that movement shooter aspect of him moving catching shooting moving catching shooting all of those sorts of things Johnny Fury definitely has that and he is really good size too I think and one of the things though that they always asked him you know that you saw from him at Kansas is he just kind of did everything there were games when it was like you need to be a rebounder and he went out and he tried to rebound the ball pretty well there were games when it was like we need you to pass a little bit more so he moved the ball within the offense a little bit more there are games when it was like we need you to shoot a bunch of shots okay shoot a bunch of shots those are the type of things that he was willing to do like on on a game- to game basis and was pretty flexible about and that’s the type of thing that it feels like Willie Green would like this is also a guy who can get to the rim and score and is a decent finisher there so having him kind of be all of those things and then a Defender who moves pretty well somewhat limited but he’s not a bad guy on defense there’s enough athleticism and you can see he tries on that side of the ball that’s great he’s not the quickest guy you don’t want him defending number one or two options but this is a guy that at least will fit in with like a team defense and if this team actually adds in some Rim protection I think you can get by with Johnny Fury out there and also the name come on that’s fun Johnny Fury if he was John Fury that wouldn’t work nearly as well but Johnny Fury’s from Australia I think is just kind of like a fun name to have on this team with everything and sometimes that that matters look at how much fun everyone was having with Grady dick last year too but Fury definitely looks like he’s got some high upside I think it’s going to take him a little bit to really achieve that right you know their shap I think there with Dyson Daniels where you see a lot of the great things the rebounding the play you know at times passing in the defense from Dice and here you’ll see the hustle the rebounding those sorts of things but it’s lacking some of the offense and other things Fury though at least should be able to shoot at the NBA level right away and I think that’s important so he can contribute he’s going to play defense he’s going to try he’s going to kind of do all of those things and that to me screams a little bit of a wiie green player even if he’s going to be a little bit more raw than some these other guys that we’ve talked about of these three I would probably go Tristan D Silva bub Carrington and then Johnny Fury in my order there but I think the first two are closer who’s what’s what’s your order of these guys if they’re all on the board at 21 for the Pelicans are you taking Carrington to Silva or Fury which one do you like just these three if you want another name throw them out there too but pick between these three uh first and maybe the other names will get talked about in future show cuz we’re going to do more draft talk here I want to look at guys like Isaiah Collier there is a couple of other big men yes I’ve listened to y’all like Tyler Smith that we’ll probably get into maybe a little bit more in depth Tomorrow there’s a couple of players out there though that I think could be pretty useful for the Pelicans here and also some upside plays and could the Pelicans trade up could they trade down those are all going to be potential things here that the Pelicans could do and we will look at it the trade down scenario is a very specific scenario that I could see them doing if one like very specific scenario presented itself that’ll come later in the week so that’s going to do it for this episode of lockon pelicans I appreciate yall so much for listening as always I’m your host Jake Madison Nola Jake on Twitter and I’ll be back with you all tomorrow to talk more NBA draft let me know the prospects you want to hear about in the comments down below see you all next time

The New Orleans Pelicans need to replenish their depth around Zion Williamson this offseason and the NBA Draft and the 21st pick have the ability to do just that. Jake Madison looks at Carlton ‘Bub’ Carrington out of Pittsburg, Tristan Da Silva from Colorado, and Johnny Furphy out of Kansas as guys who can make an immediate impact for the Pels.

  1. Tristan da Silva is the best case scenario. If he is available at 21 you gotta have him. Also Bobi Klintman would be an excellent pickup, can see him being something like Cam Johnson or Christian Wood with defense.

  2. Johnny Furphy I think would be nice as well with his cool name 19 yrs old at 6’9
