Is there a clear way to “Knecht” Dalton to the Memphis Grizzlies?

Is there a clear way to “Knecht” Dalton to the Memphis Grizzlies?

on this episode of lockon Grizzlies we break down the value of a head basketball coach in the NBA we talk about some players that may not be available now but could potentially be had via trade around the trade deadline in February and then a new mock draft from ESPN comes out Dalton connect to the Memphis Grizzlies will try to connect those dots see what I did there and so much more on this episode of lockon Grizzlies let’s lock in you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day that’s right each and every time an episode drops this is locked on Grizzlies and hopefully you’re with us I am Joe Mullen X once again flying solo no to Michel Cole with me on this episode of the show but that’s quite all right we’re going to have a good time and you’re going to get a break from me for a couple of days deich will be flying solo over the next couple of episodes of lockdown Grizzlies although that’s not entirely true I hear there are rumors of a crossover episode coming up that we’ll talk about later on in the program but I will be absent from Lockdown Grizzlies for the next couple of shows after this one heading away uh to do some stuff for the day job dichael will be carrying my uh my weight as he normally does and I am quite heavy so thank you to De Michel for that and thank you dear listener dear viewer for being with us on this episode of lockon Grizzlies today’s episode of lock on Grizzlies is brought to you by LinkedIn jobs it helps you find the qualified candidates you want to talk to faster post your job for free at linkedin.com lockon NBA that’s linkedin.com lockon MBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply we are free and available wherever you get podcasts as proud members of the lockon podcast Network your team each and every single day each and every time an episode comes out hopefully you are liking commenting rating reviewing most importantly subscribing to lockon Grizzlies and making myself and demichel Cole demichel of course of the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee making us a part of your Memphis Grizzlies and NBA content consumption I know de Michel appreciates it I most certainly appreciate it as well it is wonderful to have you along for the ride with us um an interesting NBA finals game one this past Thursday right that happened uh before we had a chance to talk about it here and we’ll talk a little bit more about the finals and the days to come and you know obviously there’s locked on uh locked on Celtics and locked on Mavericks lots of different places you can get NBA Finals content I’m gonna do my best to keep it grizzly specific here on lockd on Grizzlies that also makes it a little bit easier for demichel when he has the show to himself over the next couple of days he can prioritize the finals a little bit current NBA basketball that’s actually being played on the court court but one of the interesting things that’s happening over the span of the last couple of years in the NBA is the expansion of the pay for the head coach a guy that is not on the quarter a gal in theory in the future they should be women uh head basketball coaches there in the National Basketball Association those numbers are going up up up and the rumored numbers for yukon’s Dan Hurley eight years $100 million is the report from Adrian wowski that is something that is in the mix others have reported that as well but wge you know it gets credit you know JJ reick was reported to be the lead front runner by sham Shania of the athletic and then the next day WJ actually says no it’s it’s Dan Hurley that the Lakers covet the most um eight years 100 million dollars roughly is the rumored number obviously Monty Williams in Detroit got a similar deal uh in the last year or so and the pay for these coaches is going up exponentially and one of the main reasons for that is there’s no salary cap on it right we could obviously debate and we’re about to have a conversation about how valuable these coaches actually are especially to the Memphis Grizzlies and Taylor Jenkins but the the amount of money being paid is really just coming out of the owner’s pocketbook right there is no punishment for the team there is no cap hit there’s no detriment in terms of draft Capital roster spots you could pay a head coach whatever the heck you want and while I do get a kick out of the Lakers you know who applied for small business money during the pandemic and that sort of thing calling themselves a family run business eight years a hundred million do that’s pretty good for a small family run business right I think that’s pretty impressive Laker hate aside I do find the conversation about the value of a coach to be a fascinating one because on a smaller level I am I Won’t Say I’m a colleague because I’m not I’m not a peer but I am also a CO coach and in the professional ranks compared to high school where I do my coaching compared to college which is obviously evolved with nil and all the other things going on in the college sports realm it’s an interesting time to be a head coach and it’s an interesting time to be a coach in general it’s a fruitful one if you’re a professional coach in the National Basketball Association apparently but what is the value of a coach especially with regard to Taylor Jenkins because a lot of our conversation over this offseason so far has been about Lincoln’s adjusting scheme right lar Ro coming in an assistant who has five out experience doing experimental things offensively at the division three level the value of that guy how influential is he going to be is he someone that’s coming in just to give new ideas is he someone who’s going to coordinate an offense at the NBA level is it somewhere in between those are all fair questions to ask and again the Memphis Grizzlies aren’t necessarily giving us all the details that we would love to have when it comes to those types of queries but at the same time if Taylor Jenkins is on the hot seat and we can debate what Hot Seat means we’ve talked about it before here on the show if Taylor Jenkins is expected to have some semblance of success and yet his pay compared to that of Monty Williams and the Detroit Pistons who were one of the worst franchises in the NBA this past season is there a disconnect I would argue there’s not I think that it all comes down to what you’re willing to pay and the type of net you’re willing cast in order to bring Dan Hurley who is a back-to-back national champion at Yukon on his way to becoming a legend at that institution a college basketball legend in particular in order to get somebody who is not going to be wanting for anything the rest of his life if he stays in the college ranks to convince that person to leave that setup to come to the National Basketball Association to take on the show that is the Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James Davis all the challenges that that will bring you’re going to have to pay a pretty penny that’s not necessarily the case in a place like Memphis that doesn’t have that star power John Morant is not for LeBron James there isn’t the pressure around the Memphis Grizzlies that there is around the Lakers there’s an expectation to win but it’s not 17 Championship banners hanging in the rafters you’ve got potentially the greatest of all time on your team and one of the best bigs in the modern NBA era go win a title now it’s a very different Dynamic and energy to go from Yukon to that is going to cost a lot and eight years a hundred million doll that’s guaranteed money just about pretty much all of it give or take the language of the contract so if you’re Dan Hurley and you’re weighing this you in my opinion Dan Hurley have the Leverage you do not need the Los Angeles Lakers the Los Angeles Lakers need you just like Taylor Jenkins needed the Memphis Grizzle to have an opportunity to coach it’s all about how that balances right the shifting gears of power Taylor Jenkins was not Dan Hurley he came up in a very different way through the coaching ranks as Jenkins got his position he had not necessarily proven anything professionally as a coach and he also had not been a leader of a program in the way that Dan Hurley has most certainly been Jenkins is not Dan Hurley Dan Hurley is never going to be on the W on the Grizzlies radar because they are not going to be willing to do an eight-year 100 million contract for somebody like that like the Lakers or the Warriors or the Knicks or some other large Market team might be willing to do I just don’t see Robert perro doing that in Memphis Tennessee I could be wrong and it’d be great to be wrong because I think that’s a great way to get great coaches or if we think Taylor Jenkins can take this team to the promised land it’s a great way to get them to stay but different Dynamics play into the value of an NBA head coach not just scheme not just interaction with the front office the way that they interact with the players is massively important you see it in Jason kid and Joe Missoula right now in the NBA Finals how are those guys able to get the best out of their superstars find the best pieces around them and put them in the right rotations and roles to be successful that takes relationship building and that is the strength of Taylor Jenkins from all we’ve heard of Dan Hurley at Yukon that’s a strength of his but doing that with a college kid and doing that with a billionaire and LeBron James is g to be two very different things what is the value of an NBA coach I don’t know that I would spend $12 million a year on an NBA coach I’m not sure that I would do that if you have the money by all means get there’s no salary cap against it but let me know what you think in the comments do you agree with these reported Laker numbers do you think that is what Dan Hurley is worth do you think that is what Dan Hurley should accept to leave a good situation at Yukon it’s an interesting question and I think it’s one that maybe demichel can explore over the next couple episodes as well since he hasn’t had a chance to chime in that number was just gigantic to me and where that fits in terms of building a roster building a team team helping a team be successful what their role is especially in professional basketball is fascinating to me when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies we are going to be talking about players that might be available later on we talk a lot about trades I’ve talked about Kyle kozma and other pieces but maybe there’s a team that’s going to be worse than we expect who could potentially be in the Memphis Market uh come trade deadline season if things go the way they should go for Memphis this year we’ll talk about that next here on lockdown Grizzlies but first this episode of lockon Grizzlies is brought to you by eBay Motors passion Drive patience the formula for winning to United States customers when we come back here on lockon Grizzlies talking potential tradable options later on down down the road stick with us welcome back to lockdown Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen flying solo on this edition of the show no to Michael Cole he’ll be back with us later on in the week flying solo over the next couple of shows as I go handle things for the day job he does that from time to time and and I do that from time to time very different day jobs coaching and uh and being the beat writer for the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee but we have the shared experience of lockon Grizzlies and I look forward to checking out his couple of episodes as I do my do my trip uh for coaching over the next couple of days the value of a coach is an interesting question one that I think we’ll continue to visit especially if Taylor Jenkins is up for a renewal of a contract extension we won’t get those terms because Memphis doesn’t really share them or if Taylor Jenkins does indeed get fired down the road for underperforming but hopefully Taylor Jenkins is not underperforming right the goal for lock on Grizzlies and for you I’m sure dear listener dear viewer dear everyone on Earth given the terrible luck the Memphis Grizzlies have had over the last 16 months or so a winning season would be nice a chance to actually be a buyer at the trade deadline and see if you can acquire some talent to help with this run notice that I said trade deadline and not NBA draft notice that I said trade deadline and not this summer that’s another angle that we haven’t really tackled here on lock on Grizzlies the idea that Memphis is going to make a trade in the draft I think is pretty much a lock they’ve done done it literally the first five years of the Zack kimman ER they have made some sort of draft trade but you can make a trade on draft night without involving any players right it can slowely be draft capital I think the Grizzlies could pair a future second round pick number 39 in this draft and number nine and move up maybe that gets you to number seven maybe that gets you to number six seven with Portland or six with the Charlotte Hornets I think that could happen give or take a a minor role player right I’ve been trying to get rid of John conjar for years you don’t have to make a major blowup move this summer and I would argue as fun as it is to discuss those things and don’t get me wrong I love talking about trades I’ve also said time and again as has de Michael that we have no idea what this team is because we haven’t seen them at full straight we haven’t seen Brandon Clark Marcus Smart John Morant desm Bane jiren Jackson Jr all out there together it just hasn’t happened yet so it feels premature to blow it up unless you know as I talked about last week Marcus Smart Plus number nine gets you someone that’s going to get you a step closer to a championship if that’s not the case let’s see what it looks like right you address the big man situation whether it’s at number nine somewhere else in the draft free agency trade but again I don’t know that I think they don’t need to trade they could sign somebody with a mid-level exception type of deal they could draft someone at nine or move up to six or seven get a Donovan cling and now you’ve addressed it and you go into the season and see what it looks like at least go into training camp and see what it looks like but if you kick the can down the road going into 2025 there will be opportunities you would imagine for trades then as the trade deadline approaches just like Memphis was the team that had to punt and send out assets like David Rody and try to get what they could for those guys the Memphis Grizzlies did that maybe they’ll be on the other end of it this season and some guys that could be intriguing in that way that maybe aren’t available right now because their team thinks they’re going to be good could be somebody like a Harrison Barnes right Harrison Barnes of the Sacramento Kings uh somebody like that could be an interesting selection because of his theoretical fit throughout his time uh in the NBA that’s somebody that we we have uh looked at in the past and seen hey he can shoot he’s got some size to him maybe he could be a guy that could fit in the mix for the Grizzlies and at $18 million this coming season Luke Canard and a future first could get you Harrison Barnes around the trade deadline if that’s the way you wanted to go and if Memphis opted in on that team option obviously we’re still waiting for reports on that so that’s an interesting piece right a Harrison Barnes the king like Harrison Barnes they wouldn’t have given him the contract they did if they didn’t like Harrison Barnes but maybe they’ll be looking for a future first being in a similar spot somebody has to Tumble right somebody’s gonna have to fall and that is a very significant part of this conversation because the Western Conference not everybody’s going to be good if we’re assuming that the Memphis Grizzlies are going to be good somebody else is going to be less good and that is a challenging suggestion for some folks but it has to be reality you’re not just going to say that a team is going to be bad there has to be a caveat with that right if Memphis is going to be good why would someone else be bad another team could be a team like Golden State the Golden State Warriors could theoretically fall down the NBA standings that they look kind of cooked right and an Andrew Wiggins is a name that could potentially make sense if the Warriors don’t trade him sooner to try to extend the Steph Curry timeline but a guy like Andrew Wiggins could be intriguing it’s not the best contract about 25 million or so a year that could be a challenge right give or take a couple of million but in Andrew Wiggins if he has a bounceback season I’m not saying I would do this trade now I want to stress that don’t yell at me in the comments saying Joe you’re a big dumb dummy why would you trade for Andrew Wiggins he had a Down Season this is about stuff closer to the trade deadline this is about stuff that if the team that Memphis is interacting with if that team starts to fade a little bit if they’re not as good as they would have liked to have been maybe the Atlanta Hawks are in that boat maybe the Hawks are a team that see themselves as better than they actually are jumping up nine spots in the lottery or whatever it was they try to have a strong start and they don’t calendar turns of 2025 maybe a DeAndre Hunter becomes available a big Wing I’ve talked in the past about especially looking at the lay of the land in the Western Conference Luca donic is not going anywhere he’s gonna be a Dallas Maverick for the rest of his career in order to get to the NBA finals you’re probably gonna have to go through Luca at some point you need a Luca stopper is it possible Vince Williams Jr is that guy yeah what helps Boston is they have several Luca Stoppers I think DeAndre Hunter has some of the best numbers over the last couple years defending Luca donic so a DeAndre Hunter a Harrison Barnes Andrew Wiggins these are the types of names that almost certainly are not available right now right but they could be available six months from now seven eight months from now as the trade deadline approaches as teams fall back and then the great uh the if if I’m Captain Nemo the great whale M Cal Bridges right almost certainly not available now Brooklyn has made that clear even with number three being in the Houston Rockets hands but if Things Fall Apart in Brooklyn maybe Bridges is on the block again and The Grizzlies could slide in there so all this trade conversation you know I think a hunter is probably the most realistic name I said Harrison Barnes as well but I’m intrigued as to what you think we keep talking about trades trades trades you could still do a draft trade without trading any players do you think it’s wiser to Kick the Can down the road and look at it from a trade deadline perspective let me know what you think in the comments when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies we’re going to close out this episode the latest ESPN NBA Mock Draft uh has been released uh Grizzly’s name and trying to connect those dots to Memphis uh do you see what I did there a good little preview of what’s to come um but before we get to that I want to talk about how during this entire episode I haven’t screamed at you once right because I love you dear listener dear viewer I would never do such a thing I wouldn’t disrespect you by raising my voice in such a manner as you’re trying to be entertained trying to have a conversation with somebody about the Beloved Memphis Grizzlies already post your job for free at linkedin.com lockon NBA that’s linkedin.com lockon NBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply we come back here on lock on Grizzlies closing out this episode of the show talking about Dalton connect him making sense for the Grizzlies stick with us welcome back to lock on Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X once again flying solo happy to be here with you as always big fan of my co-host Michael Cole who is not able to be with me on this episode but that’s okay as I mentioned earlier in the show he is going to be with you the next couple of episodes solo and again kind of solo I believe there’s a locked on Blazers crossover coming up a a possible what would it take to get up to seven overall if Memphis wanted to jump a couple of picks and make sure they secured their guy I think a locked on Blazers crossover is coming so make sure you’re checking that out with the Michael here in the next couple of episodes but I’m gonna get out of here on Dalton connect and not like you know riding him like a dragon or a horse but Dalton connect being the latest name attached to the Grizzlies we’ve seen it in mock drafts ESPN I think has mocked him to Memphis before the idea that he is an older player ready to produce in the NBA right now really an impressive scorer uh Ton’s mock draft has him going eighth to the San Antonio Spurs that would be right before Memphis picked uh but he’s probably a top 10 selection in the lottery I think that’s a fair guess and obviously Memphis with the number nine overall pick as of now is in that conversation to select aulton connect so if the board breaks down that way it would be interesting to see how connect would fit with the Grizzlies I think he would fit extremely well outside of wingspan he is one of the more athletic Wings in this draft he doesn’t have a major weakness there he is an above average athlete combining it with his scoring ability which friendly reminder at the highest level of college basketball in the SEC was pretty impressive 40% three-point shooter on 6.5 attempts he projects to be a 38% three-point shooter according to tank ofon he shot 77% on his free throws so a decent free throw shooter he is not a complete liability defensively he’s not someone that you can completely and totally lean on in that regard of course but he’s also not a Civ he’s not going to be a traffic cone out there that guys are just going to be dribbling around so the thing that I like most about connect is is twofold I like two things best about connect number one he is a bucket getter right if you want to subscribe to the idea that you finally have a 6 foot n Wing that can play basketball at a high level why the heck isn’t he starting GG Jackson if you want him to be your starter in my opinion dton connect if Donovan kingan’s not on the board makes the most sense because that replaces what I have been saying the Grizzlies need for a long time in addition to that six foot n Wing they also need a bench bucket getter and that’s one of the things I like about GG Jackson going into the season doesn’t mean that two seasons from now or even a season from from now it’s not GG Jackson as a starter on the wing but I think going into a title contending season if that’s what the Memphis Grizzlies are serious about trying to do I have a hard time believing starting a 20-year-old Getsu there right so if if you disagree with that that’s fine maybe the Grizzlies disagree with that maybe GG Jackson will be the starter Dalton connect can be drafted and then be that guy that comes in and is your bench bucket getter he could be that 20 minute a night scoring 12 points off the Ben bench trying to be a Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his rookie campaign we saw a lot of different forms of offense in his bag we talked about the six and a half three-point attempts per game he shot the ball 16 times on average a game so while he took a lot of Threes he also took a lot of twos he was dribbling he was creating for himself he was Finding ways to get open against high level competition his assist ratio is not that great it’s basically the same as a GG Jackson or maybe a little bit better so connect checks a lot of the same boxes that gig does in terms of being a scorer right and that’s not to say that connect is better than Gigi because I’m not sure he is and Jackson certainly has a higher ceiling connect is 23 years old and giigi Jackson I don’t believe has turned 20 yet right or if he has turned 20 it literally just happened so the ceiling is higher on Gigi not saying in any way shape or form it isn’t but connect can be that bucket getter now right just like Gigi can if you want to start GG connect can be that guy off the bench that’s one reason I like him second reason to like him and I mentioned a little bit earlier I like that he’s older I like that he has experience I like that he’s played a lot of basketball Ron Holland has been a topic of conversation on social media I know de Michel likes Ron Holland we’ve talked about him a little bit before I’m not questioning the talent the talent is most certainly there I’m going to get t-shirts made are you trying to win a championship or not is it possible Ron Holland has the highest ceiling in this draft yes that is possible if that’s what you’re looking for cool but don’t tell me that you were trying to compete for a championship now because you’re not if you select Ron Holland he played for a team that literally is now defunct it doesn’t exist anymore in the g-league ignite who could have possibly foreseen professional aaou not working out oh me I did and if I seem frustrated or angry I am because I thought the g- league ignite was a bad idea from the beginning you’re playing games that essentially don’t mean anything are they better prepared for the pros I guess we’ll find out over the span of the next 10 to 20 years but in the short micro sample size that we have the guys coming out of the g-league ignite are not ready for NBA contributions right away as a season goes on they improve they get back into the swing of competitive basketball they show growth the talent is there but is it in a place where it’s ready to contend for a title that’s my question so to me if you like Ron Holland it’s a philosophical thought you are looking down the road I am trying to win a championship now and Dalton connect helps you in that process now especially if you want to rely on another young player in GG Jackson Ron Holland and GG Jackson together could be really freaking cool in 2030 are you trying to win a championship or not that is my question and that is why I prefer Dalton connect in those conversations let me know if you agree or disagree with me in the comments thank you for checking out this episode of lockon Grizzlies it is much appreciated the next time that lockon Grizzlies hits your YouTube Apple Spotify Amazon uh playlists or wherever you get podcasts it’ll be to Michael Cole flying solo again be on the lookout for a locked on Blazers crossover show talking about trading up for number seven overall that sort of thing I’m going to provide a trade idea even though I won’t be on that show in the flashh the trade machine the armchair GM will be there don’t you worry U make sure you’re checking out the Michael’s great work over the Commercial Appeal and of course his episodes the next couple of days here on locked on Grizzlies like comment rate review subscribe all those fun things make us a part of your NBA content consumption each and every time an episode drops I appreciate it demichel appreciates it and most of all hopefully you appreciate it and you feel a little bit better about the Memphis Grizzlies at the end of each each and every episode speaking of the end of the episode that’s where we are have a wonderful rest of your day have a great rest of your next couple of days and I will see you back here soon here on 1. I would be unbelievably disappointed if the Grizzlies don't get a Center by October. Whether it's Clingan or through a trade. I'm riding the Clingan hype train though.
