Trendon Watford, Dorian Finney-Smith and the moves the Brooklyn Nets must make this off-season

coming up as the Brooklyn Nets work their way through their offseason heading towards the NBA draft we ask What Becomes of trendon Watford Dennis Smith Jr and Lonnie Walker I fourth looking for hidden gems at low cost something that Shawn marks and the brookin Nets need to do we dive in all coming up next you are locked on Nets your daily Brooklyn Nets podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every [Music] Dayo ah yes my friends it is the lockon Nets podcast right here on the lockon podcast Network it’s your team the Brooklyn Nets every single day he’s Doug Nory I’m Adam arm we other one-year rentals the Nets had but it doesn’t mean that Brooklyn shouldn’t do it and it might be an important part of what they need to decide this offseason yeah look the Nets are going to be a team almost for sure that’s going to have to make moves on on the really Big Time margins this this offseason it’s really things are shaping up to be that way it does not appear as if there’s going to be any Grand sweeping move that’s G be made this off season uh you know happy to be wrong about that but that’s the way things start are starting to shape up so as we’re looking at the team and sort of what they need to do to even be moderately competitive this coming year which might you know be its own uphill battle you know we’re starting to look at like what are the small marginal moves that they can make or should make or have to make this offseason which are going to start kind of redefining whether or not this was a successful offseason remember I think our definition of success um is a goal poost that has clearly moved pretty significantly for Shawn marks and Company just by the nature of how they’re set up but you know in terms of marginal moves this off season you know we’re we starting to look at guys like trendon Watford as being sort of like swing moves for them um just in terms of like what they have what they don’t have and what he showed at the end of the season which I think is at least promising enough to say having him back in the building would make sense yeah and we talked about this last off season about how the Brooklyn Nets should be in the mode of taking shots right how many however many Dart throws you can get if one of them hits then that can be considered a successful off season that’s the ratio that you’re looking for there and out of the group of players we’ll talk about Dennis Smith Jr talk about Lonnie Walker trendon Watford was the one who we were both I think high on coming in I thought he could be something maybe more early it took longer for it to come to fruition but when you look back on a season now for Brooklyn there’s a couple of things one overall I think you can see the blueprint of how he can fit into different versions of teams because he does a little bit of everything can shoot from the outside can drive the basket can run the floor in space is a willing at least and lengthy Defender all of those things point the needle in the right direction yet I’m surprised to look back at a team that was relatively unsuccessful last year and see a player that averaged under 14 minutes the low for his career after the first two with Portland well okay so there’s two ways to look at watford’s season right it’s like sort of holistically look at the whole season and then look at the final 10 games right so it’s kind of it’s kind of here’s where you have to decide sort of what is the real story and this can be hard because it’s it’s the obviously the motivation around the team changed with about 10 games to go when they raised the White Flag said it’s kind of over and let’s just kind of let’s just sort of see what we got we’ll play Noah Clowney we’ll play some of the younger guys um and trender Watford is included in that mix so if you look at the whole season again different coaching staff right jack vaugh they moved to Kevin Ali things do begin to change they again I repeating myself here but the motivations change so if you want to look at watford’s whole season you’re like well okay nothing really here to see much if you look at the 10 games it’s like hey this guy kind of played a ton right and he was averaging I mean somewhere around 27 yeah 27 plus minutes a game over the last 10 games he shot pretty good I mean over that over that uh I mean he had the worst plus minus on the team but I’m not really kind of worried about taking too much away from that shot 43% from three a more than two attempts like he was kind of what you wanted to see more than 12 points a game he was actually you know dishing at the ball okay two and a half assists 5.6 rebounds like there were real numbers there now that was all requisite with getting more playing time but also like it kind of passed the eye test also so it’s hard sometimes hard to tell like if you like which one which do you think this is the sample that’s more relevant right like is it the whole season where we barely ever saw him or was the last 10 games where we saw a ton of them like I don’t know it’s hard to know where I kind of land with this yeah because he had I think seven uh double digit scoring performances over those last 10 games too and to your point that the almost 27 minute sample size now do I think that trendon Watford for his career and he’s still a young player we know only three years into the NBA but do I think that he can is going to be more likely to be a 30 minute player or a 14-minute player well that’s all relative to the type of team so I think the last 10 games are the more critical sample size why because in the upcoming season it’s far more likely that he’s going to have the ability to play 20 plus minutes a night if we think some of the other requisite moves get made here than it is that he gets buried or that it is that he doesn’t see playing time why because they’re not going to be a good team so if Brooklyn looked at the back end of the season waving the White Flag as you said and use it as the blueprint for the upcoming year before they get to 2025 and all the razzled Dazzle and all the money why wouldn’t trendon Watford be a player that you want to bring back and say we’re just going to bump you up a little bit here move you up in the rotation have a consistent night overnight roll and we’ll see where we are be the price point on this is not going to be exorbitant to get trendon Watford back in the door I think what becomes interesting is if trendon Watford is looking at it as I want to get a you know multi-year contract that makes it feel like I can grow with the team as opposed to hey you want to take another one-year flyer with us that’s more of a Brooklyn cell to trendon Watford than it is the other way around I think there’s other teams where he could get just as much playing time potentially as he has in Brooklyn it sure seems like it when you factor in the age and sort of like what he ended up showing the last year like he was you know he was on a $2 million contract I don’t think he like bumps himself all the way up to like the mid-level exception right so like you know can you sign him you know Nets are like gonna be over the cap here almost for sure when they sign Claxton so like they’re in a somewhat tricky spot with like money that they can use is he more than like a a minimum guy it would seem like it um is he up all the way up to the ml the taxpayer of Emily like probably not and so now you’re just in this like sort of weird spot with him but you know if one thing that’s interesting to think about like sort of what the team’s motivations are going forward if you look at the end of the season and you think hey we want to give the longest leashes to the guys we’re most interested in seeing like that is a good sign because if you look at this over the last nine games of the Season he had the sixth most minutes on the team it was cam uh Dennis rer Claxton Bridges DFS surprisingly and then Watford then Clowney like that was the most minutes per game um over the final over the final nine games as as opposed to guys like Lon Walker who played less than 20 minutes a game and only played in seven of those nine games right Dron sharp who played six of those games in 12 minutes a game dsj I mean I know there’s some injuries in here right so that that kind of hurt him but he like he was out too I maybe that was all injury point being six most minutes on the team and the performance ends up being okay yep and you start telling yourself a story like this guy is kind of part of what the Nets want to do right what why else would you play him this much 23 years old and and you end up showing your actions speak louder than words you played them right and and I think that like that could be the sign that they’re going to try to do something here the question now is did they play him enough that all the other teams got to see kind of what it was too and now the Market’s going to be slightly bigger than the Nets maybe anticipated classic Brooklyn Nets overexpose a talented player only to lose him in free agency coming up here in a second the final word on trendon Watford and what we believe will be the outcome this off season and then looking at two other players Doug mentioned Lonnie Walker and Dennis Smith Jr production injuries or either one of them someone Brooklyn needs to retain going into the upcoming season we’ll get into that in just one moment all right before we get that tell every our friends over at eBay Motors passion Drive patience this the winning formula for winning championships it’s we continue on today’s locked on Nets episode talking about some of those key players that Brooklyn took shots on this last season and then making sure that you actually do the Second Step because the last word here on trendon Watford is as we said at the top you take chances you hope one of them hits one of them seems to have hit so there there is a lump in my throat or a concern in the back of my head where it’s Nets do the right first step take a chance on players and then mess up the Second Step keep the player like you know that and and you mentioned that last part there if do other teams look at trendon Watford and think there’s an opportunity there and the money does matter here right when you’re over the threshold thinking about the future I I hope that when it comes to Watford specifically Brooklyn and Shawn marks don’t go well yes we want to keep them but on the mle or on the X line and that’s the demarcation here especially when we know there’s other things like veteran players looming over this roster that don’t matter as much at least through our eyes over what they need to do in this next year year and a half I think you could probably get him on I think you get a very friendly deal here on the one on the promise two that’s like here you probably have the best chance to play like if the Nets go into the Nets this this next season sort of with the roster that we think they’re going to have there is going to be there are going to be minutes available for guys who are like somewhat versatile the Nets just don’t have enough it’s like unlikely they can just get so much better talent wise here you can’t rely on Simmons Watford is like a he’s not been Simmons but you know there are some similar like there’s some like sort of crossover traits here in terms of how their games are formulated and so if you tell yourself that whole story I think like he probably he can look at the Nets and say my prob best chance to play a decent amount is on this team if I’m if my performance level is good so I think there’s probably some mutual my guess like some mutual advantages to like bringing him back and and possibly getting it like on a super friendly thing here again like navigating the salary cap around this kind of player is a little weird because he doesn’t fit one box perfectly yeah and right because like I said like one thing is gonna be too much and the other thing might be too little and then you’re kind of caught in between and the Nets might not have access to some of that money but the if you do multi-e because you’re like hey it’s gonna be super Team friendly but this year you’re G to play a lot like I think that like that is something that can work in their favor maybe at the minimum I don’t know it’s it’s a little confusing but I think the Nets should probably try to prioritize to it because they’re goingon to need the versatility they already the the the roster is already so devoid of guys who can do multiple things that anyone that can do m multiple things should be some kind of priority with this should be treated at a much higher higher uh threshold of totally like they just don’t have enough guys like I I get that he’s not a perfect player but I mean look down the look down this roster we said it so many times they just have so little in the world in the world of like just even guys who can bring the ball up the court like I they really don’t like they just they just don’t have these guys and I was about to say like label him as a guy who can write can run the can run the floor in space it can shoot a little bit from outside and also can do some ball handling there’s not there’s not more than two guys maybe on the roster that you would label as saying can do all three phases adequately enough and that’s what makes it interesting to see what they do when it comes to when it comes to Watford now the other players here Watford and then Dennis Smith Jr I’m going to go to Dennis Smith Jr because I find him the more interesting player out of the two mostly because Lonnie Walker is pretty good and he does shoot from the outside and he can ball handle but to your point about what happened at the end of the season it looked like at least under Kevin oi there was some there was some definition of what you don’t do enough of Lonnie Walker and what you need to prove to us now he did start to do a little bit more of it and start to get some credit new coaching staff we understand that but Dennis Smith Jr is interesting to me mostly because you get the both and has injury history has always been a part of his game 56 games only two starts plays a little under 19 minutes but I I think in theory this new version of the team going forward could use a guy like this in the back court do I do I think that the defensive upside we talked about with him coming in was not as impressive as I hoped it would be yeah probably he’s a little undersized in the back court very undersized in the back court along with Cam Thomas but I do think that his mold makes sense here and he unlike Watford is I doubt viewed around the league as oh watch out he’s on the upside here it’s mostly this is a guy that plays a certain brand of basketball he’s going to miss some time here and it probably cost you nothing to bring him back in and just give yourself a little bit of an additional back stop in the back court knowing that you brought over shuder as well over the course of the season yeah I think that like this is again a little bit I don’t know if the end of the year tells the whole story again there was injuries in here and there’s going to be it’s going to be a little confusing to sort of know exactly what the like hardcore idea that the team has around any of these guys is and he definitely had injury issues and I and I get like that that some of this is going to be problematic it was clear that they kind of like love the guy personality wise and I’m not exactly sure that’s they feel the same way with Lon Walker I’m not saying they don’t but it’s clear to me that they do love dsj from like just like a guy like sort of just a dude in the locker room love the way he competes he has a lot of respect around the league like he kind of reshaped his career to be you know going from like a high draft pick to kind of a bust to kind of like an all defense guy um like sort of guy and so I think there’s a lot of respect for him in that sense it’s like a little weird to it’s like he’s just another guy that just kind of doesn’t totally fit with this team just because because they don’t have certain other things like like for instance if they had like Donovan Mitchell right then you’re like okay we can live with an offguard who can like push the pace a little bit and be a little pseudo point guard and live with the shooting but we know that the other guy can like handle like primary ball handling duties all the time yeah and if you like think that’s Cam Thomas and I guess so but it’s like if they just had it’s almost like Diaz J kind of gets hurt that the Nets don’t have enough other enough Talent on on the rest of the roster so then he gets exposed and now he’s taken above the break threes which you just cringe at every single time and you know he got 29% from Deep this with with the Nets and that’s that’s not a great number I’m not like saying that’s like hey he shot 29% but like it’s almost impressive because if you just rolled through your mind you would go there’s no way this guy was sniffing 30% from Beyond The Arc and he almost did it so you know he went through some stretches where they did go in but I I think that he just kind of gets hurt in that they just they got enough guys who can’t shoot on the team yeah like that’s like the Nets have have enough dudes on the team here that want to play some minutes that can’t really shoot that well and so when that’s the problem it’s like you just at at some I how many lineups do we see this year where you think to yourself I mean how’s this lineup who’s gonna score yeah like who’s like how’s this lineup gonna score like it’s like gsj and Claxton and then like you know whoever else and and all of a sudden and it’s great defensively it’s awesome but like you just like you can’t run anything in the offense so I I think he probably gets hurt a little there too and the big exposure there was too in those you know quote all defensive lineups and difficulty shooting was also like well the defense doesn’t look good enough to Warrant saying we’re going to take some of the you know lack of Returns on the other end of the floor I like him and the point you B about just mentioned Lonnie Walker here as well the organization clearly likes the the model of Dennis Smith Jr and what he brings to the table again I wonder if the injury factors as well make it easy dealing with a hip I think it was at the end of the season that kind of kept him in and out a lot i’ still played mid teens minutes there down the stretch in the last handful of games I find that interesting you know bring him back what does it look like and maybe most importantly unlike a trend in Watford where I think hey let’s keep him in the building because he’s young and there’s a long-term opportunity here and as we get maybe a draft pick and all these other things and get to our big off season you can see Watford fitting in to a lot of versions of this team maybe Dennis Smith Jr over the course of the first half of the Season gets himself to a spot where other teams look at oh yeah would I throw you you know second round pick to get Dennis M Jor you’re you know something low level maybe there’s just enough there at the trade deadline for a playoff team that just wants a little bit of that grit coming off the bench unlike Brooklyn who’s in that weird spot of overexposing a player that has a nice skill set but needs to be ranked accordingly on a roster and they just don’t have the players there which was by the way the theme for the team this whole year it’s like everyone’s a little overex everybody is just everyone’s a little out of place everyone’s a little out of place and when everyone’s a little out of place you get the record that the Nets had like that’s just kind of what happened let’s um let’s get into Lonnie Walker here coming up in a second and also talk about the most critical component of making any of these decisions which is one we’ve talked about Dorian Finn Smith you got to get guys out of the way if you want to keep a player like trendon Watford around all that and more to close out the show coming up in just one moment all right before we get to that tell your my friends over at LinkedIn if you’re hiring for your small business you got to free terms and conditions apply all right so as we close out today’s lockdown Nets episode talking about couple of critical decisions the Nets need to make why because everything that they’ve done this off season and everything that you hear it’s not going to be the Big Splash that you were hoping for the Superstar is not coming this season you’re gonna have to wait until another year goes by and in the interim you can learn about trendon Watford you can maybe take a chance on Dennis Smith Jr Dorian finy Smith becomes a big component of this but Lonnie Walker as well he seems to be the other end of the Dennis Smith Jr Spectrum in terms of did the organization really like what they got from him in terms of serve I’ll say serving Your Role whereas he’s explosive offensively and I think you can make the argument Lonnie Walker was trying to do what the team needed what they lack which is you know score a guy that’ll take in his hands and go at the Bas but on the back end of the season it seemed like the coaching staff was saying hey man you got to be a two-way player for us which I can appreciate and also don’t think was the right was the right thing to be saying to Lonnie Walker it’s kind of like yeah man if you can cook go cook like that’s what we need more of going forward but philosophically I don’t think that he has a a clear path coming back like maybe the other two do I don’t think so either and like I do think there was some injury stuff in here for sure right like he was dealing with some injuries and he came out like shot out of he was arguably one of the most the that’s most important players early in the season I mean he really played awesome Off the Bench yep and you’re like man the Nets really found something right like they really really it was like I think that was like one was like oh Shawn Mark special right like they found something here this guy was undervalued oh I can’t believe these other teams didn’t bring him back you know L you how could you not go back to the Lakers like these teams that like maybe could have really used them and then it kind of tails off as the season goes on like some of it’s injury again some of it seemed be more than injury like you sort of alluded to here earlier which is like maybe not all injury maybe just kind kind of fell out of favor also maybe or a combination of the both if it had been early in the season I think we’d be like oh 100% brought him back might not be able to afford him maybe his Market maybe his Market’s like so big now that the Nets can’t even actually do it but I’m actually and I think I think we were on record at one point of saying like hey you know as the trade deadline was coming it was like Hey if he’s going to have this type of start to his season and the team’s going to be bad like maybe you get the old flip value here out of Lonnie Walker now that went completely out the window on the second half of the season and again like there were injuries in here and he it’s a sometimes a little hard to tell you know what’s the chicken and what’s the egg and but it’s like so I don’t 100% know it did seem like there was non-injury related reasons where he was not playing later in the season or he would come in for like a really short stin and then just kind of be out and that was that was kind of it the shooting just wasn’t as good I mean there were other there were just other factors here that just didn’t seem like they were lining up for a guy that was GNA like keep going I don’t know it’s would it shocked me if they brought him back not at all would it shocked me if he was gone also not at all and like another team sort of takes a takes another fly in him at 25 it’s getting a little close for him sort of career-wise about where it goes here right like 25 going into age 26 Season hasn’t been able to like really stick for over the long term so it’s probably close to makeer break time for him if they if they said they were bringing it back I would TR I would trust that the process was good and they like saw enough that like they thought it would could be a whole season worth and if he went I don’t think any fan at this point would think it was any great loss and it’s unfortunate because I again if we said this at the beginning we we did this uh conversation December we’ feel it was nuts to not think about bringing him back but it just kind of tailed yeah and of course and remember you go back to his third year in the league when it was with San Antonio I that was the peak when he started 38 games he started 32 with LA the year prior coming over to Brooklyn so but it’s a player who has now three teams under his belt to your point after the first four with San Antonio could be playing on a fourth team Dennis Smith Jr has played on six teams in his NBA career and if the Nets don’t bring Watford back he’ll be going on to his third team so you know this is the theme some guys just become journeyman players that bounce around the back ends of rosters and and by the way when he was with LA you think about players like this and go right because in a year when they go on a run and you’re in the playoffs and Lonnie Walker kind of hits the mark wow this could be something and then it goes away because you are a replaceable commodity in a lot of regards the other factor for him I I think inside of this room too was looking at Dennis shuder when they brought him over and in I think you got the veteran presence the kind of both and he’s not a perfect player either but you start his crowded room remember he’s under contract so you’re going to have those decisions to make there are cap decisions to make around this potentially as well not that we not that we get into socials where shuder took the Nets off his you know profiles and who knows what’s gonna happen this off season for him maybe Doug as we close it out he falls into the bag along with Dorian finny Smith of do you need to clear out two old old veteran players this off seon to make sure that if you want to bring back any number of these guys you create those opportunities and also opportunities to go out to the market and try again sign three four guys remember uh Bates deop was here that didn’t work out right there were other players that they brought in uh basley that didn’t work out you fired off five or six looks one maybe one maybe it’s Watford came back you need to repeat that process again this season to see if you get another player to add into the rotation going into 2025 oh this is why the third thing that Nets need to do I mean like so I would say TR does not fit into the same mold as DFS who we agree that has to be traded this offseason and looks like he will be traded right like so if we’re saying the third thing that like the Nets H have to do here it’s trade him because and the difference is he’s like he has more redundant skill he has a more redundant skill set with the what the Nets actually do have than what the schroer has which is like they probably just gonna need him to play point guard right at this point so I think that’s the thing that probably saves him from being traded I mean even if the Nets draft drafted traded into the draft and drafted a point guard which I think would probably be something like what they would do it’s it’s still they still need them right so I like um even if they went out and signed somebody like on a veteran minimum then they still need him I they just this is how short they are with guys like this and so I think with the DFS trade I think it’s very clear they have to trade him it would be a Monumental mistake almost for like and he’s just he’s going to take playing time away from guys you want to develop yep other teams could use him the contract’s good it’s kind of like for what right to like keep him around here and so it would be it would feel crazy if they didn’t trade him whereas like truder say they just don’t if they traded him you better get a couple guys back that can do the one thing he does that not many other guys on the team can do do you think that my my last my last thought too is here God I I hate to say it but do you think there’s a world where the Brooklyn Nets whether it’s shuder D le Center Dorian fin specifically are like now let’s see how he looks to start the year because his value probably fluctuated throughout the year and over the last couple of Seasons with Brooklyn sometimes having shooting slumps Etc do you think that Brooklyn is willing to commit the first 25 games of the upcoming season to quote showcasing Dorian finy Smith one more round to see what teams are willing to give up from obviously with the week 2024 class is no one’s going to give you a 2025 first round pick by all accounts the way the NBA’s discussed it but I do just one that part of it a willingness to try one more time to peek out his value I think it’d be a mistake I think you need just move on from him now because you’re already two years behind the time to trade him but I wouldn’t be shocked if that ends up being a narrative we hear Brooklyn of course wanted to trade Dorian finy Smith but unfortunately they did not get the value that they believe he’s worth on the market this off season I mean how is a guy that’s going to be 31 increasing his value at this point sense but like I it just doesn’t happen like it’s just not wasn’t inreasing valum from 29 to 30 either realistically but they kept him anyway you know so that’s that’s the problem here right it’s just like just look at the his whole history of the league like these guys when you hit this age it’s kind of like this is what you are and it doesn’t get better right like and and and so I don’t that would feel crazy to me like if they stood their ground on value for DFS at this point I mean it really is throwing the baby out with the bathwater it’s it just doesn’t make any sense and if we already agree that they’re two years behind on it and I can even tell myself a story for the last two years where like the motivations were different they’re trying to make the playoffs he is a good functional piece like he was shooting the heck out of the ball like they kind of did seem he was a really important piece especially when like you know Dron got hurt claxon hasn’t been the healthiest guy in the world like they kind of needed bodies at some point but now like with especially with Clowney showing that he can play real minutes like you got he’s gotta go he’s gotta go like it’s just it’s very clear it’s like it’s it’s so obvious that if we’re doing a podcast in August like DFS is still on the team I think we’re it’s a it’s a total I think we’re on The Fringe of a very very dark timeline going into the season for the brook I mean honestly even if it’s like hey like the Royce O’Neal thing it’s like you wanted a first you got some seconds okay fine go let’s move on let’s move on with our lives here like it just um and and I and I really hope they don’t stay on their ground around that I don’t think they will but Marx has not pulled the trigger quickly on some of this stuff in the past and it’s so it’s like I think I can’t be definitive about it till actually happens keep walker uh sorry keep keep I’m now I’m going to close out on a terribly sour messed up note keep trendon Watford thank you keep Dennis Smith Jr if you want I don’t think Lonnie Walker returns two out of three is not bad though Brooklyn has some pieces in the back court as they continue to try to build that’s the theme for me and that’s all I’ve got to say about that all right make sure you subscribe to lock on anet over at YouTube over 7,000 subscribers now on our way to 8,000 let’s go baby much appreciate everyone that’s rocked us all through Brooklyn that’s basketball basketball basketball basketball basketball basketball basketball basketball yeah

The Nets might be faced with running back a very similar team to last year, though there are some moves Sean Marks and company must make this off-season. The Locked on Nets guys discuss the play of Trendon Watford at the end of the season and how it might be a sign the team trusts him with another contract. 1. Most likely Dorian Finney Smith has the most odds to be traded either at the upcoming draft or this summer. Brooklyn wants to improve on the areas of need and with Noah Clowney's emergence and Watford potentially coming back there really isn't a set time for Doe on this team….

Brooklyn could try to get a late 20 selection for Doe which could let them get a decent prospect to develop…

As far as Watford goes he's a solid two way player who can play power forward and point guard. Given Brooklyn's lack of versatile offense, Watford would definitely help improve that if he comes back….

  2. As long as Cam Thomas becomes the focal point of the offense, it's fine. If Claxton gets prepared to play the Sabonis role, we'll be fine

  3. When healthy Lonny Ealker looked great. Agree he kepy us in many games early in the year. Good 3 point shooter, slasher and ginisher at the tim. He had a hamstring injury which is hard to recover from in short term

  4. I've been a long time Sean Marks supporter, but I agree if we don't trade DFS this summer that would be bad. Even for a first 3 years down the road.

  5. Good pod guys. I think Brooklyn's move is see if trading one of their players can get them in this draft. they need to get younger and more talented. they have a better chance finding a diamond in the ruff in the draft than what is currently on the roster.
