them the answer for the Wolves moving forward plus Kyle Anderson’s a free agent where does the bench playmaking come from who’s running the offense Off the Bench for Minnesota next year reviewing the seasons of both mlof and Deonte Morris and kind of going off with that looking ahead it’s all coming welcome and you are locked on wolves [Music] you are locked on Timberwolves your daily Minnesota Series today and I’m going to cover both backup point guards for the Wolves Jordan McGlothlin and Monte Morris and we’ll talk about each specifically we’ll spend some time on each one of them but then I also want to talk about the point guard the backup point guard the bench playmaking um you know I guess the um I don’t know the the point guard by name by position but also that role of who’s who’s going to be the straw that s the drink Off the Bench for the Wolves uh in light of what happened this year at that spot so that’s what we’ll do today here on the show a big thank you for making lockdown wolves your first listen every single day of course this show is free and available everywhere that includes YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms wherever you like to 2bs 2 E’s CK Ian all right so The Tib rolles entered the season with Jordan mlin as kind of the de facto backup point guard but at the same time it was um remember last year going back to the 2223 season mlin had the calf injury was in and out of the lineup early and then really struggled when he came back Chris Finch loves Jordan mlin and and Jordan mcclin does a lot of things really well and so he he was given the chance to have the job early this season he did get banged up a little bit again early eventually lost his job struggled somewhat when he came back and it was a bit of a roller coaster again for mlin and um I guess we’ll start there and then we’ll talk about Monte Morris and kind of along the way and I guess closing we’ll talk about the situation overall so let’s start with mlin um of course T fans I’m speaking in generalities here but I think everybody loves Jordan mcgl he he for what he provides he’s a super beneficial player and of course the the backstory is undrafted four-year starter at USC played in the g- league for a season for the uh Brooklyn Nets g-league team hadn’t made it to the NBA the tber will sign him to a two-way deal in before the 201920 season and 2019 2020 season he ends up earning a a a contract a partially guaranteed contract and then they brought him back again last year in restricted free agency when he didn’t find a job elsewhere so he end up spending five years now with Minnesota and despite the limitations that have always been there um he’s undersized you know he’s he’s six foot maybe uh and he doesn’t have an outstanding wingspan it’s fine but it’s not anything that jumps off the page he’s limited athletically somewhat he’s a he’s a modest athlete by NBA standards and he didn’t have a reputation as a great shooter although he’s held his own at the NBA level and certainly shot the ball well from outside the arc this year he got really hot towards the end of the season um coincidentally after the tile was traded for Monte Morris we’ll talk more about that here in a little bit and he’s also because he was a four-year college guy I mean like he’s already 28 years old now and you know his rookie year he was 23 so there were a lot of things that you know were limiting potentially limiting factors for Jordan mcclaflin and he’s seen his role and consistency in his role diminish over each of the last four years he’s played less and less minutes from his second season in the league which was the the second Co short season the 2021 season during which briyan Saunders was fired and Chris Finch was hired he SE he’s played progressively less minutes each year but there’s things about his game that have gotten progressively better he’s been a better shooter year every year he actually turned it over even less this year if that was even possible remember the crazy stretch he had a couple years ago the assist to turnover was something like I don’t know 30 something to one over the course of a couple of weeks um but he’s improved as a shooter he’s improved overall as a playmaker and he knows who he is as a player because of his size he’s a little bit limited defensively um and he’s also a little bit limited offensively and also the modest athleticism you know plays into that too so there’s certain things that Jordan mcclaflin can’t do and that’s fine nobody’s asking him to be a superstar he’s a role player interestingly the Timberwolves felt like backup point guard was a big enough need at the trade deadline this year that they went out and got Monte morrris we’ll talk about next and Jordan mlin initially lost his rotation spot he ended up playing um Morris I think got a little dinged up and then struggled some and then mofin ended up playing toward the end of the season regularly and was playing really well like went on just this crazy hot streak from outside the ark and eventually both he and Monte Morris lost their rotation spots like basically right before the playoffs remember in game 82 when the TS got blown up by Phoenix and it was and all of a sudden Jordan mcclin was in the the rotation like was a regular rotation guy and Monte Morris wasn’t and we said all right it looks like mclin’s going to get playoff minutes and then it ended up being Monte Morris that was the first option off the bench at the point guard spot against Fenix in the first round so mlin post trade deadline didn’t play in the first handful of games after the deadline and then all of a sudden he was in the rotation and he couldn’t miss he had that four three-pointer game in the loss at the Lakers and then he went on this like absolute tear where from that point to the end of well actually let’s do it this way from March 10th to April 7th he was 57% outside the ark 56.8% and he was making one and a half three-pointers a game and then in the final four games of the regular season he combined to get 0 for three outside the arc and I’m sure that that played into him not being in the rotation to start the playoffs but he was playing you know 12 to 18 minutes a game regularly in in in the month of March and in the early part of April so he was Again part of the rotation and it’s hard to look at this Jordan mcgoffin season and say anything other than hey when he was healthy and in the rotation he was actually really good again and like I like where I started he was this was the best shooting season of his career he finished the season shooting 40 what was it like 43% from outside the ark uh no 47% 47.2% now granted it’s a total of 89 attempts over the course of 56 games but 47.2% regardless is great and for his career he’s now 37% I know he struggled last year he’s only 31% but for his career he’s a 37% three-point shooter and certainly he’s been streaky and that was the case this year um but for a guy who was gonna have to fight to get a rotation spot back and was kind of on the fringes of the rotation early this season went um a month without playing from that that game uh the timber overtime went over Boston November 6th he didn’t play again until December 11th and then played sparingly struggled kind of leading into the trade deadline was replaced by Monte Morris and then eventually earned a rotation spot back and and really you know was playing a lot with Monte Morris and then took some of Monte Morris’s minutes down the stretch in the regular season it was in some ways a microcosm of mclin’s first five years in the league where he wasn’t trusted early thought he was going to get a shot and didn’t had some injury struggles that limited him a little bit got a chance struggled when he was supposed to not have a chance anymore supposed to be replaced he got another chance and he was great shot 57% from outside the arc over the course of a month and now all of a sudden but then he still loses his job and then you’re in the playoffs wondering what why is Jordan mcgoffin not playing now to be clear the Phoenix matchup wasn’t you know great for an undersized guard they needed as much size they could get and that’s why Monte Morris got the nod over mlin as as the backup point guard early in the playoffs and then of course you get into the Denver and um you know the Denver series was just knock knockout drag out you know crazy middle stages of that series The Wolves did all the fight fire power they could get and then playing from behind in the Dallas series plus the size of Dallas mofin never had an opportunity and didn’t play until garbage time of of the uh the final game of the season so again th this season was on microcosm of Jordan mcgloin’s career and he was good ultimately when he was on the floor but it was really that month of hot shooting and and also good play otherwise that went along with it that made lifted the overall kind of perspective of the Season or the I guess the overall impact of the the the total body of work in 50 plus 56 games played I want to talk about Monte Morris and then I want to come back to the conversation of like who’s the option next year what are the Wolves going to do um or I should say what are the options and and who who will the Wolves pick in free agency is it mlin is it Monte Morris is it Kyle Anderson is it nobody is it somebody else is it a draft pick is it a a vet free agent how are they going to address the backup point guard spot in the offseason we’ll close the show with that but next let’s talk mte Morris we’ll do all that coming up here next today’s episode of lock out wolves is brought To Us by our friends over at eBay can’t miss analysis opinions and news streaming 247 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day all right let’s talk Monte Morris so of course the backstory Monte Morris is he was a second round pick by Tim Connelly with Denver in 2017 barely played at the NBA level as a rookie in fact only played in three games but then year two he forced his way into the rotation and became their everyday backup point guard he played in 82 games in average 24 minutes per game for the 201819 Denver Nuggets that was a team that upset the Spurs in the first round actually no they didn’t upset them they were actually the the two seed that year they beat the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs in seven games and then lost in seven games to Dame and the Portland Trailblazers uh in the second round of the playoffs both of those were seven game series so he was there their primary backup point guard then for for three seasons he had some injury problems uh briefly in the co second covid short season and then resigned headed to the 2122 season this uh somewhat lucrative deal for a former second round pick of course it was a three-year was it three years about $28 million the year one was 8.8 million and he became their starting point guard in the 21 22 season started 74 games for Denver averaged 13 points per game shot almost 40% from the field and that Denver team was disappointing that was Nicole jokic’s I think his first MVP season and they only finished six in the west won 48 games and lost in the first round in five games to Golden State uh in 21-22 he was traded to Washington in the off season started 61 games for the Wizards and was fine had some injury issues there I think um I can’t remember what the injury was that year shot 38% from outside the Arc was consistent you know just for a bad team goes to or gets traded to Detroit last offseason hurts his quad I think in preseason and ends up only playing in six games right before the trade deadline basically to try and prove that he was healthy the Wolves trade for him It’s the final year of his deal and he uh makes 9.8 million total this last year he made 9.8 million and never really seemed to be himself I’m sure because the quad injury but he was actually pretty good for Minnesota it was just limited impact limited minutes available because they lean so heavily and Mike Conley and I’m sure that the idea was let’s give Conley some rest let’s let Monte Morris you know uh get a bit of a rhythm never really happened I my hunch is it’s a mix of Morris never really fully got his conditioning this year he also got tweaked something got a little banged up early in Minnesota and connley was so good and Chris fin just wanted to rely on Mike connley and then as the toward the end of the regular season like we talked about the first segment Jordan mlin was awesome so there’s less opportunity Forte Morris you might look at the at the his line and say okay 15 minutes a game Five Points a game you know not not anything to write home about well that’s true except he shot 42% from outside the arc which is an easy thing to forget because remember in the playoffs Monte Morris was one of 14 outside the arc he was really bad in the playoffs and that certainly is GNA Cloud you know fans recollection of mon Morris I didn’t realized he had shot the ball that well in the regular season so I went back and was prepping for this 42% now of course the the total volume in terms of games played he was what uh 25 of 59 so I mean it’s not nothing but it’s not a massive sample in Minnesota but he’s a career 39.1% three-point shooter he’s been 38% or better in four of his Five Seasons that he’s been a rotation player so he is a plus three-point shooter he’s a good Defender not a great defender he’s a solid Defender the problem is that he’s undersized and that was the The Challenge he had in the playoffs and really the only Advantage he had for playing over mlin is he’s slightly bigger right mlin six foot with the modest Wings ban Monte Morris is 6’2 with the modest Wings ban he’s a little bit bigger I don’t think he’s really 6’2 but that’s what he’s listed as so the Timberwolves aired on the side of Monte Morris in the playoffs and he shot one of 14 outside the arc and it was a a clear minus offensively now he’s only like he turns he turns 29 here later in June so he’ll be 29 at the start of next season he’s in his prime now provided that there’s no lasting effects of the the relatively severe you know muscle soft tissue injury he had back in October of last year and I think struggled to come back from him over the course of the Season there’s no reason he can’t be a one of the better backup point guards in the league remember he started 61 games the year before for a bad Washington team but he started 74 games for a good Denver team the year before that and was you know got six Man of the Year votes back in his second season in Denver like he’s been a really really good backup point guard and at times a solid starting point guard over the course of his career so he would be a fine option if the Tim rolls are looking for a quote unquote traditional backup point guard somebody who can do you know be similar to Mike Conley he’s not quite as big as Mike Conley and I know Conley’s undersized but he’s as long as he’s fully recovered he should be a little better um I shouldn’t say better well he should be better defensively than Conley at this stage in Conley’s career we saw Conley get beat quite a bit off the dribble in the playoffs and you know I’m sure in the fall he’ll be a little bit more fresh but he’ll also be a year older Conley I’m talking about but mon Morris I think can provide similar level of Defense albeit in a smaller frame and he has a a more consistent track record of success as a three-point shooter than say Jordan mcglauflin so there’s a lot to like about Monte Morris as a future option as a backup point guard in practice on the floor he was every bit as good as mlin those guys were both solid and it’s funny because it’s still one of those things where you look at the playoffs and how short the Wolves rotation was neither one of those guys was was ultimately in the rotation against Denver or against Dallas in the second round in the Conference Finals and if you look at any national website or whatever blog that puts together like offseason needs everyone brings up backup point guard I mean you’re not going to do better than Monte Morris in terms of a backup point guard with a track record unless you’re gonna go find I mean you’re just not like tus Jones is a starting point guard at this point in the league and he’s also gonna be way too expensive for the Wolves but like that’s an exam that’s one example right you’re not going to find a better backup point guard than Monte Morris because if you do then they are start they’re not a backup you’re not going to afford him Monte Morris probably will get more than the minimum next this offseason it’s going to be really hard if they want to bring him back and mlin in my opinion was nearly as good as Monte Morris this year he’s smaller and he’s less consistent and the wolves have shown the um the willingness to pull the plug if they feel like moff is not playing well and to be clear when mlin is not going well it’s not good because he’s a guy who doesn’t turn the ball over and when he’s not going well he suddenly will turn it over he’ll just be clanking shots he won’t be guarded on you on offense Monte Morris was this way in the playoffs but over the course of his career there’s more consistency than with Jordan mcgoffin um I think mcgoffin is a vet minimum player this offseason and I think Monte Morris is going to command more than that probably the mid-level exception maybe a little bit more it depends on what teams think about you know his uh the injury he suffered last October and if it’s something that could happen again or if he has lost a half step since then or you know he is going to be 29 later this month mclin’s 28 like these guys are both they should be in their athletic primes but um they you know mclin’s had calf injuries each of the last two years Monte Morris had the soft TI tissue injury the hamstring or the quad I guess I think it was last October with Detroit so how are teams going to valuate these guys in the offseason I want to close the show today by talking about what direction the Wolves may go here um what other options they have and then also Kyle Anderson’s a free agent too and he was kind of a deao point guard at times for Minnesota last year so we’ll close the show there we we’ll cover all that here next today’s episode of locky wolves is conditions apply all right so this offseason the temp rol’s top seven rotation players are all under contract we talked about this early last week and uh you know it’s the starting lineup plus NZ Reed plus n Alexander Walker Kyle Anderson so seven of the top eight I should say KY would be the other player in that top eight he’s an unrestricted free agent and is almost surely going to be out of the Wolves price range this offseason there also were some some clunkiness related to spacing with him and goar both on the roster and on the floor at the same time but of course Kyle Anderson was big in terms of um now the Wolves lost in five games to Dallas of course but he was uh much more impactful in that series than he was earlier in the playoffs and you know there’s there’s certain pros and cons certain drawbacks to Kyle Anderson but he’s a valuable player and he’s going to very likely be outside the wolves price range of this offseason the other guys on the fringes the rotation like if you’re going to go out to 10 players it’s these two guys we’re talking about today it’s Jordan mlin it’s Monte Morris those are your top 10 rotation players on the roster that finished the season last offseason the reason why Jordan mcclin was on The Fringe of the rotation was essentially the 11th guy at the start of the season last year I I mentioned that earlier but I didn’t really explain why you’ll remember the timber R signed Shake Milton to be their backup quote unquote point guard he’s a combo guard he’s a scoring guard a two guard in a point guard’s body who never was actually able to shoot the ball well for the Wolves this year Troy Brown Jr was also On The Fringe of the rotation Shake was probably the the seventh or eighth guy somewhere in there with Kyle Anderson and and um you know probably ahead of Niki Alexander Walker in terms of pecking order on the in the rotation and Troy Brown was like the 10th guy mlin was the 11th guy the idea was that mlin wouldn’t be needed as much because of shake Milt and that’s why mlin was getting pcds and four minutes a game and six minutes a game whatever back in October November last year but sh Milton ended up just being atrocious in the Tim’s uniform Troy Brown of course plays a different position and was in and out of the rotation you know frequently like it was suddenly he was playing 12 minutes and then he wasn’t playing at all and um but mofin was was right on The Fringe of the rotation because of that so last offseason the idea was to have a guy who could be a scorer who could contribute off the dribble who could provide the punch that Jaylen noell was supposed to supped to do the year before Shake was supposed to be that guy neither mlin nor Monte Morris are that guy and neither really is I mean neither is Kyle Anderson Monte Morris has a little bit more in terms of juice scoring shops whatever you want to call it off the dribble he will look for his own shot he’ll try and get off the mid-range jumper he may try and get into the lane more so than Jordan mcclaflin he’s a higher usage player than and in fact that actually bore itself out even in the brief amount of time Monte Morris played for the Wolves this year in 27 games Monte Morris had a had a higher usage rate than Jordan mcclaflin um he also had a way lower turnover rate than Jordan mcgoffin because in part because of the usage rate he was just getting more shots off but he also had a lower three-point rate he wasn’t simply a catch and shoot three-point shooter and that was essentially mclin’s role on offense for Minnesota um he that’s the only time he was really shooting the ball was um was was catch and shoot three-point shots in fact fact usage rate wise mlin was dead last of any player that played for Minnesota this season taking out Justin Jackson who appeared in two games for Minnesota on a 10-day deal he had a lower usage rate than every other player that suited up for the Wolves this year Jordan mcclaflin did Monte Morris was down there too he was uh third to last if you include wend Elmore Jr but mlin was dead last in usage so what are the Tim roles looking for out of this backup point guard role well one of the things we identified last week on the show and one of the things I talked about in the the last post postcast of the Season that I did with Tyler mcaf and Luke Inman following the game five loss to Dallas was the Wolves need some backourt scoring some Wing scoring somebody to help take the pressure off of Anthony Edwards Shake Milton was supposed to do that this year I thought it was an interesting choice for the Wolves to look for that in what’s also your backup point guard role because by definition it’s a backup role and it’s not exactly the same as like you know the easy example that we keep going back to because we just saw this decimate the Wolves defense is Kyrie iring and Luka donic now those are two very different things I get it but you need to have some sort of punch Off the Bench Nas is that but he does that in his own way a very specific way the Wolves need to get that from somewhere else and again Shake Milton was the stab at that last year two years ago it was supposed to be jaying no well so what are they going to do this year mon Morris is more of that guy than Jordan mcin but he’s not really that guy Kyle Anderson isn’t that guy either he will shoot you know hunt his own shot but he’s not going to stretch the floor even as well as Monte Morris especially not as well as Monte Morris or even as well as Jordan MLF so none of these three guys fit that shake Milton jayen noell bench score type role that also can run the offense n Alexander Walker is the closest thing but he’s better when he’s not searching for his own shot it’s great that yeah he can jet to the rim and get off a reverse layup and score and traffic and he’s athletic in transition but you don’t really want n Alexander Walker scoring in the half court that’s part of partly why he was overlooked early in his career with New Orleans and then with Utah because he was expected to be that guy’s a lottery pick in the first place people wanted him to be a scoring guard Alexander Walker and he wasn’t that guy he’s a three and D is type player he’s more than that I I think and clearly has had amazing stretches but they don’t want to rely on him as a a sixth man I’m putting this in air quotes if you’re watching on YouTube or if you’re not watching on YouTube a a six-man type score he’s not Jamal Crawford but the Wolves clearly were looking for that with Shake Milton last year and they truly believe Jaylen noell was that two years ago I don’t know where they’re going to find it and we’ll get into free agency here in a couple of weeks we’ll get into the draft I’d be shocked if they thought they were going to get it out of the draft this year picking at 27 and 37 in a week draft but there’s different Avenues the Wolves could acquire somebody like that they just don’t have cap space so there’s a world in which they bring back Monte Morris with the mid-level exception and he likes Tim Connelly and maybe he likes Chris Finch and like this makes sense and so he’s the deao backup point guard and they tell him hey you know you scored 13 a game as a starter for Denver a few years ago like get out there and score some buckets for us off the bench or it’s you know between him and Alexander Walker and Nas and you kind of split up that scoring that’s what I would do I think Monte Morris is a fine fit as a backup point guard and if I mean he may command more than the level exception I could be grossly underrating what he’s going to make on the open market but I just think this was clearly the worst year of his career throwing out his rookie season so I don’t know that he’ll get much more than that but if you can bring him back and lock him up as your backup point guard and believe he’s going to be better than he was to close this season then I think that’s the move and I love Jordan mlin but I just think think there’s a little bit more there with Monte Morris a little more offense a little more consistency perhaps a little better defense a little more size and you still have Alexander Walker you still have um nazri to give you scoring but between Alexander Walker and Monte Morris you’re you’re gonna get some offense Off the Bench there you’re also going to get some playmaking um and again I don’t know that that’s what the Wolves will do because I think that they really I think Chris Finch really wants somebody he can turn to Off the Bench that can get out there and score I’m a bit wary of what that means because neither Milton or Jaylen noell were good the last two years and that it it brought down the overall production level of the bench so I’m curious to see what they’re going to do this offseason we certainly evaluate some of these minimum free agent uh you know potential free agents for for minimum contracts that’ll be kind of the next thing we’re going to finish play review series we’ll get into draft stuff and then we’ll look at some vet minimum type guys in free agency because that’s really what the Wolves will be looking for what are some names to watch out for who could fit the shake Milton esque role or take this backup point guard role from mofin SL Monte Morris KY Anderson with with uh you know bench turnover Beyond seven of the top eight we’ll call it slots eight nine 10 maybe 11 Off the Bench are going to need to be filled by guys they bring in or by guys we previewed that or we reviewed last week you know Josh minet Leonard Miller Etc what’s that going to look like I think it’ll be interesting because it may not matter next April next May when the wolves are in the playoffs but it certainly matters the five months before that leading into the playoffs getting the Wolves a top top seed in the west is going to matter and in depth matters in the regular season they had it this year but now you’re losing Kyle Anderson um you may or may not believe mofin or Monte Morris would be the answer they also didn’t have Monte Morris of course for most of your last year um and ultimately they traded Troy Brown in and Shake Milton because they weren’t providing what the Wolves thought they needed to I I actually think Troy Brown’s still a good fit for this team and I wouldn’t mind seeing him back in Minnesota but um anyway that’s that’s again more of a free agency topic so be interesting to see how the Wolves back fill the the backup point guard spot and some of the bench scoring as well we’ll uh continue the player review series on Tuesday we’re going to get into rotation guys now you know working backwards actually we’ll talk more about slow-mo and his season inter review I think we’ll do just slow-mo and Nik Alexander Walker on Tuesday show and then we get into Nas and the five starter so big week coming ahead coming up for that and then we’ll spend some time on the draft following that so A Lot up coming here on lockon wolves a big thank you for making the show your first listen every day of course the show is free and available everywhere that includes YouTube The Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t have a consistent answer at backup point guard this year, and both Monte Morris and Jordan McLaughlin are free agents. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) debates if either player is the answer and what the Wolves may be searching for in such a role. 1. Having a true backup during the season is all that matters so Conley can be fresh for the playoffs.

  2. If the owners truly have no issue paying a big luxury tax bill, they should try to bring in Morris and Anderson back at whatever cost 8-10 million per year on a one year deal. If they don't work out you can always trade them at the deadline for another 8-10 million player where if we let them go and sign a few vet minimum players, we wont have tradable pieces outside of our core players.

  3. Really wished we kept Troy. Confident ball handler that could shoot. Finchy needed to loosen his leash. He won us 2 games when given significant minutes
