Lakers got EMBARRASSED but it has big implications on Brandon Ingram trade for New Orleans Pelicans
the Los Angeles Lakers got embarrassed by Dan Hurley turning down the offer to be their head coach and while it’s funny and it is I’ll tell you why it could complicate a Brandon Ingram trade plus it would be a great move to trade up for Dalton connect in the NBA draft it’s Tuesday’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s [Music] go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans po podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team everyday welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans in NBA part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison at Nola Jake on Twitter here with y’all on this Tuesday we got a jam packed show it’s trying to figure out if I could actually split this into two different shows I’m just going to put it all in one to give you like a a double dose here of two big topics that I think are really important for the team one involves the Lakers getting embarrassed we’re going to laugh and joke but I’m going to tell you how it’s going to impact the trade market for Brandon Ingram and then watching Drew holiday in the finals in game two reminded me of Dalton connect out of Tennessee and I’ll explain why in the third segment of today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s episode is also brought to you by Fuel make every moment more right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started and of course thank you for making locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day we were here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast covering everything you want did a deep draft dive yesterday we’ll get into a little bit more draft talk in a minute here please subscribe wherever you get your podcast join over 10,000 Pelicans fans on YouTube as well and right now let’s laugh at the Los Angeles Lakers because they are embarrassed right now to not get Ukon head coach Dan Hurley this is a horrible look for the franchise and this is I’m building to a point with this I promise we’re not just here to laugh at the Lakers because you want to know why it relates to the Pelicans and that’s what I try and do with everything we talk about in this show and trust me this does but they were embarrassed this was a horrible look for them after the weekend saying oh he’ll make a decision on Monday and it’s like oh he’s probably going to leave he’s going to go take that Lakers job and then it turns out he declined it because the Lakers cheaped out the Lakers cheaped out they they needed to make a Godfather offer to pull him away from Yukon kind of a dream job for him he loves being on the East Coast has won back-to-back national titles is going for a third he’s making a lot of money there basically told Kentucky like don’t even reach out to me with all of this and they didn’t make the Godfather offer it was rumored to be 8 years $100 million that might be enough to get you to leave as a head coach and it turned out to be6 years $70 million it’s a lot of money but that would have made him the sixth highest paid head coach in the NBA not even in the top five that’s not the type of offer that he he can say no to right he said no or that the type offer he can’t say no to he said no to it they look cheap and this is what you get for firing your head coaches and cycling through people so quickly they’re paying Frank vogle who won him a title they’re paying Darvin ham and I guess they couldn’t afford the 30 extra million dollar for Dan Hurley and they’re going to have to kind of turn to the other guys more on that in a second here they look cheap they look foolish their fan base rightfully is upset they’re getting roasted on social media and the media in general is not being kind to the Lakers right now and now they have to go back to JJ reick James bgo stuff we’ve talked about on this show and be like we’re sorry you know it came out like oh Dan Hurley’s been their number one guy the whole time so BGA reic are there being like wait what about us like what’s going on here and now you have to go back to them and be like you know what we actually wanted you all along and they’re going to know that you’re lying now reic and bgo are going to get paid more if they end up hiring one of them or they just start the whole process over but the Lakers basically were so high and mighty thinking that because we’re the Lakers we have LeBron that they could lowball go cheap on Dan Hurley and it turns out they couldn’t right you could read that that reported 8-year hundred million offer as being like his Target number if you hit that I’ll come and sign for you and the Lakers thought so highly of themselves they didn’t do that and look at what happened they are embarrassed from this sort of thing this is a terrible look for the Los Angeles Lakers so that means they’re going to try and overcompensate right you you have to fix this hiring JJ reck even if he turns out to be a good coach ain’t it hiring James Bargo if we think highly of him isn’t going to be the look to kind of wipe this distaste out of people’s mouths to make them look high you know strong again so Anthony IR who’s the former host of lock on Lakers now does his own thing tweeting out that this is the first time he thinks that LeBron could potentially leave the Lakers that’s how bad this reflects on them especially when you factor in you know clutch and their involvement in all of this and you know his his representation how they don’t run the Lakers but they’re heavily involved with the Lakers here this is just a bad look like this is what again what you get for for thinking your ish don’t stink kind of stuff right like they just thought so highly of themselves oh it’s the Lakers Stars want to be here all this this guy who is considered you know a top two three coach in college is going to come here guy that everyone would probably like to have coaching their team if they could get him and you couldn’t do what you needed to do to land him it’s a black eye for their franchise it’s not a good look whatsoever so what you do here is if you’re the Lakers and we know this is what they’re going to do is they’re going to try and overcompensate they’re going to overcompensate they’re going to do something else I think they were trying to be kind of be smart with some of their assets they can trade three future first round picks you know they could try and go get a big name and I think that’s what they have to do there is no coach out there that they could go higher right now that would really kind of like fix this make it right in the T in the eyes of Lakers fans and not make the Lakers the laughing stock of the league right now right as their rival Celtics go up three uh 20 in the NBA finals and look poised to equal their number of championships so the only way you fix this is you go Star hunting on the trade market that means Trey young Donovan Mitchell dejonte Murray Larry marinin any of the names you’d want the Pelicans to go after the Lakers are now going to be in the Run for I don’t think they were truly going to be in the running for any of those massive names before partially because I think they were trying to manage their assets but also some of their other assets don’t look that good but there’s a scenario where they could Land one of those guys over the Pelicans and that’s what worries me now that the Lakers feel they need to be hyper aggressive to not lose LeBron James to kind of overcome Dan Hurley staying at Yukon what’s that scenario I’ll break it down for for you coming up here next in today’s episode of lockdown Pelicans well say to to build to the point again there’s one thing I want you to take away from the segment is the Lakers got embarrassed let’s say it again right let’s all it together once more with feeling the Lakers got embarrassed and they’re going to do something to try and counteract that an everyday that means you listen Monday through Friday and now for your second listen locked on Saints host Ross Jackson breaking down everything black and gold what the offense is going to look like it’s been talking a lot about the movement the the motion that we’re going to see different looks than we saw last year it’s getting me kind of hyped make sure Ross Jackson locked on Saints part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day is your second listen today so let’s lead off with this again the Lakers were embarrassed really as simple as that with Dan going back but that makes them desperate that means they need to overcompensate and that’s going to complicate the Brandon Ingram trade market the Pelicans have better assets they have better young players they have other salary that they can move you can include Brandon Ingram in a deal in theory in theory the Lakers can’t outbid the Pelicans for Trey young Donovan Donovan Mitchell is a different story more on that in a second here uh Donovan Mitchell but Larry marinan even though I don’t think he’s going to get moved right this could also mean a guy like you know Trey young and Murray get traded depending on how really the Atlanta Hawks want to retool the roster so here’s a scenario where the Lakers do kind of win or get the player over the Pelicans you know say let’s use Trey young as the example right I just did the show last week if you’re an everyday or you remember of kind of like the dream off season and I said it’s you know the the Brandon Ingram trade is for Trey young but I wouldn’t give Brandon Ingram three first round picks for Trey young right like there’s a limit to what I would do in that deal they a small Market you need to manage your assets smartly the Lakers maybe they don’t now that they are so desperate backs against the wall being embarrassed I’m going to keep saying that do they go out and just completely overpay for someone s St Trey Young’s not available and it’s dejonte Murray right there’s a limit to what you would give up for Murray I think he’s a good player I don’t think he’s an insanely Elite player he doesn’t move the needle for me a ton but if you could get him and add him to the team especially if you don’t have to give up Brandon Ingram that sounds great but what if the Lakers just completely overpay and outbid you like completely to the point where it’s like yeah we can’t match that right remember when Murray was traded in the first place and how much they gave up for him that was genuinely shocking of a trade and being like wait it was that much that’s what he went for here he was traded by the Spurs to the Hawks for galinari and a 20 where where are the picks here I’m like rereading it for Danio galinari 2023 first round pick 2025 first round pick 2026 first round pick and a 2027 first round pick um and one of the picks didn’t convey like that’s an insane amount of picks that he was traded for like you you can’t do that he’s not worth that and I would be upset if the Pelicans did that even though I want them to kind of put their chips in and go after guys think that Rudy goar trade and it was like how much for Rudy goar even if another team wanted to get him they probably weren’t going to do that and it’s like The Godfather offer thing what the Lakers should have done we can tie it all together here for Dan Hurley and they didn’t do that the Lakers might do that they might include three first round picks plus other swaps and other things that they can offer to go completely overpay for a player and if Trey Young’s the available i’ say it’s Murray that’s a better example here the the Pelicans aren’t going to compete with that and they’re going to let the Lakers do that even if maybe the Pelicans need to go and get that kind of guy that’s what this could cost they might just mortgage everything here and while it’ll be fun to watch the Lakers not do well in the future when LeBron James leaves and it’s an agene Anthony Davis who’s kind of unable to be the number one guy that doesn’t matter because I want the Pelicans to be good more than I want the Lakers to be bad and I think that’s an important thing to look at with this right the spite the stay Petty all of that’s fun but I’d rather the Pelicans just win right if they both make the you know both miss the playoffs but one’s worse than the other that does make me feel better if the Pelicans make the playoffs lose in the first round and the Lakers just don’t do anything don’t make the playoffs like no one’s truly winning there and so you look at this and it’s like maybe they trade Austin Reeves D’Angelo Russell in three first round picks to the Atlanta Hawks for Murray you know if it’s just you know maybe you value Russell maybe you value re maybe you value all those first round picks because of how combustible this Lakers situation could be and the Pelicans got a lottery pick out of it right they could get a good pick next year too all that still potential sometimes you’re kind of banking on all of that right the Pelicans got the seventh pick in the draft from the Lakers that’s pretty significant from some of those future picks if they completely overpay and you know the Atlanta Hawks value those picks because they don’t have picks of their own because of the Murray trade that’s a lot like that’s a lot I don’t think the the Pelicans are going to match that and that complicates the brand Ingram trade market if one team just comes in and completely completely overpays we’ll see what Brandon Ingram’s trade market is I think it’s a little bit up in the air right now so that’s an area that does concern me here with this so it’s easy to laugh at the Lakers they were embarrassed by all of this but if it means they go and land a bigname player because this is what they’re going to try and do to overcompensate for it I don’t love that because the Pelicans are competing with them for the same players and maybe the Lakers feel desperate whereas New Orleans is shown maybe they kind of have a propensity to to really truly manage their assets better than the Lakers will but you don’t get your guy there’s something to be said for that it’s not an ideal situation let me know what you think do you think this complicates the Brin Ingram trade market let me know in the comments down below so we’re going to stick in this segment we’re going to switch gears to the NBA draft I want to start with with game two of the NBA finals and Drew a holiday looking freaking awesome awesome one we all love Drew holiday so that was just really cool like the two teams in there I’m rooting for the Boston Celtics cuz I want to see Drew holiday get another ring he was F Flatout fantastic in game two he had 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting 11 rebounds a steal and a block and what was so impressive about what he did was the way he got those points that 11 for 14 right like that’s really good that’s an insane game I saw this tweet I don’t know who said it otherwise I’d credit them but there was not one single isolation possession for him he didn’t score as the pick and roll ball handler so again the ball in his hands or a postup basically all of his scoring kind of came in the flow the rhythm of the offense not being the guy not going okay I’m going to take my Defender one-on-one or anything like that the Celtics do a lot of that but Drew holiday doesn’t need to be that guy so to just completely fit into the Rhythm the flow of the offense was just to have that kind of performance there with the defense that he gives you but we’re focusing on the offense right now was truly like an incredible thing to watch he had I think that Finals game is to me one of the more impressive that I’ve seen in a really really long time when you have two guys in Jason Tatum Jaylen Brown who handled the ball even if Tatum’s scoring’s a little bit weird in this though I do think he’s playing relatively well in the postseason you have porzingis who’s a big part of their offense too to see what Drew holiday is doing and how he’s fit in and kind of being that kind of player again not one single isolation possession to score not one time being a pick and roll ball handler and then driving to the basket scoring that way or pulling up catch and shoot off of cuts things like that right like that’s how he scored in that game think about that with a guy like Zion Williamson he handling the ball the court gravity that he has if you can get a guy that does catch and shoot situations off Cuts think like a hyper herb Jones that’s how herb scores but what if you you had a guy that was like crazy good at that sort of thing that’s what Drew holiday just showed you in that game while also being a really good three-point shooter he’s had one of his best three-point shooting careers of his season this year with the Boston Celtics draining north of 40% of his threes he’s been the exact kind of player that you would want on the New Orleans Pelicans the timeline was weird we don’t need to rehash this of like they shouldn’t have traded him or anything like that like they they did the right move there I think and did right by him for where they were kind of in their rebuild process what if you can go and get an offensive version of that and I don’t think Drew holiday is going to do that every single game but there is a player in the draft that I’ve mentioned like almost a month ago on this show as a trade-up target for the Pelin because you’re going to need to trade up to get him but that Drew holiday game reminded me of him I’ll explain why that’s Dalton connect out of Tennessee let’s look at him coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s episode of lock on switch gears a little bit we just kind of shifted in that last segment talk about Dalton connect out of Tennessee this is a guy that I am kind of insanely high on in the NBA draft and I think the pelins are too y there were some rumors right away after the lottery you know in the days after that after the combine that the Pelin were looking to potentially trade up I don’t know how much there is to that but we always know they kind of fixate on one or two prospects kind of up there and I think Dalton connect is one of those guys so he’s a little bit older a senior out of Tennessee went the jco route before one year at Tennessee he’s 23 he’ll be 24 next season so this isn’t like an 181 19y old but you want a plug andplay guy and if you’re in everyday or we talked about kind of plug-and-play guys in yesterday’s show and why this team who’s trying to be competitive to go out and play right now wants to have someone that can step in their depth might be tested a little bit particularly with Naji Marshall leaving so getting a guy that can come in and give you some offense or defense is an important thing to get you need to get someone in this draft who can contribute right away a big would be great but there other players too and Dalton connect is absolutely one of those guys 66 with a 69 wingspan and pretty good strength and decent enough measurables borderlining on good at the NBA Combine this was just a hyper productive college player especially at Tennessee where he averaged almost 22 points per game shot 45% from the field and 40% from three but here’s the thing with his three-point shots his three-point shooting was 47% on catch and shoot threes this is a dude that kind of scores in all different ways but is also an elite shooter this is someone who looks like he will be a 40% shooter on good volume high volume at the NBA level and he also gets downhill and attacks and gets to the free throw line so while we were talking about Drew holiday kind of playing off ball cutting doing all those things dck is really good with the ball in his hands and aggressive and scoring and also has some like sneaky good like functional athleticism is probably what you would call it where he can actually finish at The Rim he put on a lot of muscle you could see it from his Jo film to this year at Tennessee where he can handle contact where he has good touch and can finish with both hands at The Rim just kind of does everything I don’t think you’re going to use him at that way at the NBA level and he might kind of struggle to adjust with that kind of being a number one option a number one scoring option even though I think he definitely can be it’s the off ball stuff he does like everything you want out of an off ball guy he has like a shocking amount of basketball IQ a shocking amount of basketball IQ something that David Griffin said they want to add in the you know to the team this coming season he just has that like feel for the game where he looks around and just knows where to pos position himself something very similar to Jordan Hawkins and so for a wing player who can cut and relocate and find open space to shoot that has good size and good athleticism that’s a type of player that I’m really interested in you look at how he relocates after handling the ball passing it moving around realizing when someone’s cutting and then relocating to kind of fill the spot that they were in so he provides an outlet for that other player would fit perfectly around Zion Williamson like absolutely perfectly around Zion Williamson and when you look at what he did going from Joo to the SEC that says a lot about him as well I think right he took a big step up in competition and still delivered on all of that and again the shooting looks phenomenal he took six and a half three point attempts per game right you want to add more shooting as a knockdown guy a movement shooter a pull-up shooter in a spot-up shooter that’s what this guy can definitely do and he has enough athleticism and moves in his bag to create a little bit of space I don’t think he’s going to be an elite creator for others at the NBA level but using him as an off ball Guy where his usage rate is a little bit lower it was fairly high in college that to me screams like the type of player that I want around Zion Williamson this guy’s going to come down and immediately knock down shots at the NBA level the knock on him is twofold I don’t think he’s an elite rebounder though I don’t think he’s a bad rebounder and defense hasn’t totally in there when this guy’s on the floor especially if he’s going to be with the starters that’s who they’re going to probably try to be picking on I will say his defense got better at Tennessee so again going to the SEC and Grading out as like maybe an average Defender I think is a pretty good thing he definitely seems to have the work ethic to try and become a good Defender whether maybe some of his you know lateral side to side movement holds him back that remains to be seen in could be the case but he’s a willing Defender and he tries it’s not going to be kind of the same hustle guy as Naji Marshall but he’s going to be more of that kind of knife on offense can give you some of the slashing that Naji Marshall gave you will definitely give you more of the shooting than what Naji Marshall gave you that to me is the type of guy that I would go and get he doesn’t have the same like insanely high ceiling that you would like and I think that’s maybe why he’s going to fall out of the top five top seven top eight particularly with the defense too but if he’s there at 111 12 that’s where the Pelicans maybe need to get on the phone and look and see what it would take to potentially trade up could you trade you know the 21st pick in a future first round pick to get up and draft him while also acquiring two second round picks Dalton connect and two second round picks while giving up this first and another first that to me I don’t know if that’s the exact trade that you’d be able to do I would look into that trade because I think that’s the type of move that would work really well could you call the Sacramento Kings and go right down to 21 they’re 13 we’ll give you next year’s pick too you give us two second round picks in a future draft because I don’t want them in this draft call it a day I would be thrilled with that sort of deal particularly if the Kings aren’t going to part with dearen fox or someone like that well then they need other picks to trade to try and bring in a big name because they want a guy like Brandon Ingram you need future first round picks to do that go give him those future first round picks or at least one to go and get the guy here that I think would really help and I do think dton connect can definitely do that and be that guy I’m like very very high on him and how he’s played and I think he’s going to be a very solid like high floor plug-and-play guy in the NBA and I think he fits exactly what the Pelicans would want could probably lead your second unit a little bit too solve some problems for the Pelicans right there let me know what you think is there trade up guy you want to see is it connect is it Rob Dillingham someone else we’ll look at some of those prospects as well later in the week and we’ll have a very fun trade Target Thursday show as well so please subscribe wherever you get your podcast this is the lockon pelons podcast part of the lockd on podcast Network your team every day as always I’m your host Jake Madison Nola Jake on Twitter we’ll be back with y’all tomorrow to talk more draft and other things going on around the team we got a James brego update that we didn’t even get to touch on in today’s show we’ll look at that tomorrow as well and I’ll see you all next time
The Los Angeles Lakers were embarrassed by Dan Hurley turning down the offer to be their next head coach and while it’s fun to laugh about it, Jake Madison says it has big implications on the New Orleans Pelicans trading away Brandon Ingram. Plus, Dalton Knecht from Tennessee is a guy the Pels should look into trading up for.

Havent been on in a while…sorry jake
Hog wash
You still blowing smoke
It was all BS by LA to not be too obvious about LeBron hiring JJ last month & drafting his Son
Jrue needs to come home after he win this 2nd chip
What up Jake
yea…this is great. For once we aren’t the ones getting embarrassed publicly
Dang now they gotta get JJ, Lakers # guy all along. Shucks
the pels most certainly should manage assets responsibly and the lakers will be the lakers. they will fail again tho. pels will continue to rise
Every dayer!! 🇵🇭🇵🇭
I don't know why we need another wing player… I'd expect Hawk to take Naji's minutes assuming Naji is gone, and then we still have Herb, Trey, and (sigh) Dyson (who is a guard but can't dribble). Would rather look for a big in the draft to be our long-term center to learn behind whoever we (hopefully) can trade for.
Who cares f$ck tha lakers don't waste time on them cmon jake
Herb Jones and Isaiah Crawford together would be some lights out defense. Should pick Crawford at #21. I hope Dyson stays with the Pels and improves his play making and shooting. Hopefully new point guard with Jose as a strong backup. I like the small ball lineup with Zion/Trey at center
We talking bout griff he's tony montana got all the work scared to make a deal we as organization are not the one
The Lakers are the most iconic franchise in the NBA, I’m sorry but I don’t see the embarrassment..
Dalton Knecht would be a great pick ! He was impressive during march madness !
Dalton Knecht is not a guy you trade up for, especially in a bad draft. You get him if he slides but you don't trade up for a guy unless he has star potential.
Every dayer comment
Ain't no way Knecht is avail for us…unless part of a BI trade with the lower draft pick…and Willie Green no play rookies, unless you play defense like #NotOnHerb
Fans hear the Lakers' name & think they have unlimited money. However, they really are a Mom & Pop organization not owning other businesses. Gail Benson looks down her nose at Jeanne Buss. Now time for Gail to spend some & finally go over the cap & get this team talent.
Every dayer
Better draft an older player if you don't draft a 5 because Willie don't play young rookies. (See Hawkins)
Only you want trae young
Let the Lakers have trae
Lebron to Golden State.
