Which players on the Memphis Grizzlies roster are the safest from trades this summer?

Which players on the Memphis Grizzlies roster are the safest from trades this summer?

I had someone ask me yesterday said de Michel would you trade GG Jackson then I said whoa what they said no no no no it’s a it’s a big trade chip in a in a big trade and I said you know what don’t worry about what I said we’re GNA talk about that and other Grizzlies potential trade candidates who’s safe who’s not on this R roster let’s break it all down right here coming up on lock on grizzly you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what’s going on everyone and welcome back to locked on Grizzlies I am your host today demichel Co beat writer for the Commercial Appeal right here in Memphis Tennessee thank you you guys for tuning in with us each and every single day on locked on Grizzlies uh we got a lot to talk about today we got a lot to talk about today and on today’s show we’re g to pretty much you know we’re gonna we’ve been talking about the draft a lot right uh first of all thank you to everyone who enjoyed uh the crossover episode seemed like we got some real good uh feedback from the crossover episode sounds like you guys want more of those so we will do more we’re going to talk to a couple of the other uh locked on hosts and try to bring more of those crossover episodes as we get closer to uh the NBA draft uh so that seems like a fun way to get into some of that content but today we’re going to take a step back directly from the NBA draft content and focus more on what the Grizzlies have on this roster and this kind of ties in to the draft content as well because the first question when we talk about all this trade stuff will the Grizzlies trade this pick will the Grizzlies move back will the Grizzlies move up one of the first questions you have to ask yourself is who’s safe on this Grizzly’s roster not even just for the draft but just as we get into free agency and before it and after it and all of that who on this roster right now can kick their feet up and say man I’ll be here when the season starts and as I looked at it and broke it down and of course you know I talk to people about this stuff all the time and there aren’t a lot of guys there aren’t a lot of guys right now who I would say are extremely safe on this Grizzlies roster about GG Jackson at the top of the show we’re going we going to dive deeper in into that conversation here in a second but when you look at the roster right now you got 14 players right but we’re we’re not talking about you know the two-way guys and things like that uh the conversation starts with the big three the core however you want to phrase it John Mor jiren Jackson Jr Desmond B from a safety standpoint from a potential trade standpoint I’m hanging up the phone not listening to to anything I know there was a point I think last summer me and Joe did a show where there was like a Desmond bang you know for jayen brown idea being thrown around uh not on the I think from the grizzly standpoint it’s just you know trade offseason talk or whatever what you do it I know we see it sometimes you know on Grizzlies X and things like that social media platforms uh people used to discuss that idea a lot or whatever but I’m here to say right now johnar and Desmond Bane I think that’s Championship back court you don’t have to move anything there we know what J is Dez to me is that’s as good of a compliment as you’re probably going to find to what job brings especially now that Dez is focusing on being more of a oneon-one score and more of a shot creator that was probably the biggest hole for him uh you some people will say oh defensively you want to see more out of him but I think defensively is very strong you know at the point and Dez competes you not just going to bully ball ISO 40 point game Desmond bang uh not not not to not on a regular basis so with all that being said then there’s jiren Jackson Jr right I think he’s pretty safe too jiren I’m not really moving him for anyone at this point in time no uh he’s still on a really good contract extension talks as we said next next year we’ll be talking about all that more depends on the season that he has uh next season and whatnot and that’s going to carry us into you know that next level of conversation with jiren Jackson Jr but as of right now no to me he has one of the best value deals I mean this guy just won defens player of the year last year and in this season he played six6 games on a Grizzlies team that wasn’t doing that well but he was one of the best isolation scorers in the NBA took his game to another level offensively and it’s something to build on going forward now that those three guys that was easy right I I think everyone for the most part can agree that you know Desmond Bane johnar J Jackson Jr are pretty safe from trade talks with the gist because it it would have to take a a star of a star to get one of those guys moved in the deal but is there anyone else on their level of safety I say yes but there’s only one guy and it’s not who you think it is because it’s not GG it’s not Vince Williams it’s Derrick Rose I know somebody just listening and said to Michael come stop trolling right now like be serious all right but no seriously I am serious derck Rose Derrick Rose is that key vet right like like you may say come on how’s Derrick Rose safe but take take this past season away do you remember last season how there were some maturity concerns in certain ways not even just with job but just some of the things the Grizzlies would say after games before games uh I know you know that’s C of Reason Dylan Brooks is hear anymore whatever the case may be uh the Grizzlies wanted to do as Taylor Jenkins said more uh walking the walk and less uh talking the talk so uh that’s kind of been an emphasis and man so many players I I can’t emphasize this enough talking to guys in the locker room Derek Rose man they they talk about the conversations they have with him I go back to the moment do you remember the first game in New Orleans When J uh made his season debut who did he walk into the arena with it wasn’t Dez it wasn’t GG it wasn’t zier Williams who he’s very close with it wasn’t um you know Desmond Bane who has a great relationship with it was Derek Rose I think that was a signature moment even at the time they didn’t even know each other extremely well at that point but that’s who J walked into the arena with Derrick Rose son right now plays for John morant’s uh a team like that relationship has developed to the point where Derek Rose has turned into someone who won he can be a deao third point guard and still played decently well you just don’t want to play him too much but Derrick Rose played I mean he still was one of the shiftier players on the team we saw him have a bunch of really good Crossovers and at the end of the day you want to put him on the floor with a lot of good talent want to see him on the floor more with Luke Gard Desmond Bane uh you know jiren Jackson Jr guys of that elk and I think he’s pretty safe because of his veteran standpoint and then he’s on a minimum deal right like what are you realistically getting even if you move there Rose it doesn’t make sense so that’s why in this case I put him on that level of safety he’s someone you know at the beginning of the Season he’s going to be on the roster now there are a couple other guys want to get to real quick who I say they’re safe but were smallest smallest that I would listen to uh from entertainment perspective with these two guys and you know the two names that I’m about to say prop GG Jackson and Vince Williams I’ll start with Vince Williams Because this is easy then we’ll go uh to to GG after that Vince Williams uh right now he’s in a spot where one you have him on one of the better valued deals in the league he is a very solid Defender he’s held his own against Kevin Durant Luca donic uh in several defend several high level scores uh on that level and he loves that and that’s important to me GG Jackson Vince Williams uh with Vince Williams he loves his role he’s fine with five shots he’s going to go guard that guy and if he’s and if and he’s gonna guard him you know to the best of his ability and he’s happy he Embraces that role he wants to be the guy to hold Kevin Durant to eight of 20 shooting you know on that given night and grab the offensive rebounds and things like that he’s cool with doing the dirty work there’s not a lot of guys I mean most guys when they get to the NBA they’re averaging 20 points per game all their life or you go to college have like G like GG Jackson has always been an incredible score Vince Williams in college uh was probably the best player on his team you know over there at vs VCU so you you come to to the NBA and it kind of humbles you in a way and everyone can’t accept that Vince Williams has that’s important and he’s on a great value deal quite frankly Defenders like him aren’t just walking around here on cheese and The Grizzlies need those type of guys right now he’s really safe to me GG Jackson and Vince are in this same category but I wanted to emphasize this point more with GG because uh that’s why that’s why I’m having this conversation right now and it’s the fact that GG Jackson is is extremely safe he him and Vince both but let’s say right now Grizzlies were to go Star hunting you want to go Star hunting with the Grizzlies you say hey I want I don’t know and let’s say next season you know LeBron James retires after this next upcoming season and Anthony Davis says all right that’s it I I’m getting out of La LeBron’s gone time for me to leave and hypothetically speaking and and I’m said this is a very small because you you gotta you gotta stick with me here GG Jackson and Vince Williams are not on a trade list for me by any means necessary but if there’s an Anthony Davis if there’s I don’t know if if Boston loses four stt games in the rest of the finals and there’s toor Mo there and they say Okay Jaylen Brown Jason Tatum it just it just ain’t going to work you start a conversation more with the GG or I I don’t know if Vince is a conversation starter but but you you start a conversation more and Center a package around a GC more so than Desmond bang jiren Jackson Jr or John Morant and the reason I say that is there’s no one else on the roster who’s getting you an elite level Allstar do the Grizzlies even need an elite level Allstar I don’t think so I’m not that’s why I I think GG should be on here to the end of his contract but the point that I’m making is a lot of people can make this point that if you want to build a a big deal around going to get another star to pair with Desmond Bane jiren Jackson Jr and John Morant before jiren’s next contract kicks in you start with either Vince or Gigi and nine times out of 10 teams are gonna ask for Gigi first 19 years old high level score 69ine Wing could very easily see him being a 20 point per game score in the NBA at some point uh that’s the name he is right now the Grizzlies most tantalizing chip if they want to start hunting again will the Grizzlies go start hunting again I don’t think so I think the Grizzlies now are just at a point in time where they can just be fine with going to get guys who are complimentary players around their stars and if they’re going to get complimentary players none of the players players that we’ mentioned so far make sense as players to be the ones uh in trade talks but there are some other guys on the roster who I feel like they’re safe pretty much but uh I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re moov we’re going to talk about those guys here next coming up on locked on chrisli but before we talk about those guys this episode is also brought to you by better help listen here better help is the place where where if if you want to benefit from therapy better help is a place for you to go to get a great experience because whether or not you’ve been to therapy personally uh there are benefits to going to uh therapy out here and look I’m here to tell you I’ve had my share of battles out there I I and I think of a lot of my battles in the Sports World and one of those that comes to mind for me today is some of you know that I’m a Green Bay Packers Fan I’ve been a Green Bay Packers Fan my entire life the 2014 NFC Championship game the Packers were up 19-7 it pains me to talk about this five minutes left in the game with the ball in the fourth quarter against the Seahawks and we lost uh we lost it was a onside kick two-point conversion 28 2822 game in overtime and the Seahawks went on to win the Super Bowl that year uh that’s something that I’m still coping with myself to this day I will not rewatch that game but there are things that are bigger than Sports here in our well and then that’s why you should give better help a try because if you’re thinking of starting therapy better help is it’s entirely online it’s designed to be convenient flexible and suited to your schedule and all you got to do is fill out a brief questionnaire to get matched up with a licensed therapist and switch therapist at any time if you want to if you’re not feeling the vibe with your therapist just switch therapist there’s no additional charge in doing that so right now you want to get some things off your chest like I had to get that off my chest y said thank you for listening uh go get some things off your chest now with betterhelp all you got to do is visit betterhelp.com lockon NBA today to get 10% off of your first month that’s betterhelp.com locked on NBA to get 10% off of your first month coming up next here on locked on Grizzlies we got to talk about the players who are safe but they’re on watch stay tuned for that welcome back to locked on Grizzlies everyone I am the Michael Cole beat Rider here at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis Tennessee breaking down the players who are safe may not be safe on this Grizzlies Rost in the first segment we talked about johnar jiren Jackson Jr Desmond Bay that Trio but I can set a couple other names as well Dereck Rose GG Jackson Vince Williams so we’re up to six roster players right now there are 14 players currently on the Grizzlies roster and now this next category is is a little bit different those first guys that I mentioned no way I see them being moved no way this list I don’t necessarily see a couple of these guys being moved I’m going to divide it up a little bit and some of this is based on some things that I’ve been hearing and some of this is gut feeling and whatnot but I want to start with Luke Canard because I think Luke Canard is pretty safe and and if if you’ve been following the Grizzlies if you’ve been following me and Joe mull X this summer we’ve me we’ve mentioned Luke Canard a lot here’s the situation with Luke Canard the contract is you know a large number it’s 14.7 million to bring you back uh L canar is probably gonna barely play over 14.7 minutes not barely but you know somewhere around 24 25 because you you’re supposed to have John Morant Desmond Bane uh all in the fold and they’re gonna play most of the minutes and he’s gonna play some minutes alongside of them but so is Vince Williams so is Marcus Mar like he’s not going to be a 28 minute guy here in Memphis and 14 A5 million these days is a lot of M to play a guy just to you know play 22 23 minutes so the point that I’m making is he’s safe but I think the the ideal situation for the Grizzlies would be to bring him back on a new deal say okay yeah the team option is is the he’s on a $4.7 million team option the ideal situation is okay decline the team option sign a two-year deal 20 million 10 million a year two years 20 million 3 years 30 million now you got more long-term security uh and The Grizzlies get the less annual uh value value per year I think that makes sense uh for both situations but what if Luke says eh I don’t want to do that I want to make all I want all my coins give me all 14.7 million and I can go somewhere else after this season appreciate you Memphis it was fun enjoyed the rock he has more leverage here Luke Canard has more leverage you want to know why I’ve talked about it a lot and I don’t know if everyone’s hearing me but this is this is what I know this this Ain me just spitballing here the Grizzlies are coveting shooting this summer just like they did the last couple Summers and the execution wasn’t there the idea was there right feel like okay yeah we go get David Rody really good college shooter didn’t really work out not on the roster anymore Kennedy Chandler yeah you know there were questions if if it would translate but if you look at the numbers he shot the ball well in college hasn’t really worked out even to a lesser degree you know uh Kyle Anderson we’ll see you later we’re bringing in Santi Al dama in the rotation uh 34 35% three-point shooter decently well but you need more Jake lvia is he shooter is he scorer whatever the case may be he’s been more scor and shoot it to me with all that being said the point that I’m making here with Luke kard is the fact that the Grizzlies need him the Grizzlies know that they need him they don’t want to trade him Luke Gard is only not on the safest players list because there’s a situation here where the Grizzlies say look we know we know he’s not going to be back after this season let’s go ahead and recoup some value for him now that’s why he on this list but you get the point Luke Canard is very safe because of what he brings to this team he is that other shooter when when Desmond Bane isn’t on the floor that teams have to honor at all times he’s that guy the Grizzlies need those type of guys and he’s very safe because of that couple other guys that I want to mention Brandon Clark I won’t spend too much time on Brandon Clark because uh Brandon car simply right now coming off the bench double digit score every year in his career up to this point uh we saw him even in a limited role this season and the bounce is still there now he has full off season to kind of you know use it more he was very you know cautious with you know how much he wanted to you know expend a lot of his energy just simply because he was getting his legs back but he still looks like Brandon Clark the floater uh the jump stops uh the pick and roll stuff all of it is still in his bag pretty much the same player I think he’s pretty safe the Grizzlies signed him to a contract extension that now he’s he’s playing out over the next couple years and whatnot and I think he’s pretty safe but again with this whole conversation Around The Bigs and matching salaries and things like that because uh you know he is one of those those middling salaries that if the Grizzlies want to make some moves he’s a guy who makes uh sense in that case but I think he’s very safe as well another one is Marcus SM right like same thing you know I I with BC and to a lesser degree Luke Canard luuk Canard is more of a need I think Marcus SM is more of a want on this Grizzlies team the Grizzlies want Marcus Mark as much as they need luk Canard does that make sense things make sense uh he’s valued he gives you some of that veteran presence some of that uh you know that certification that I’ve been here I’ve done that um you know like Derrick Rose does with the Grizzlies but the difference is with the development of the the GG Jacksons the Vince Williams Marcus Smart’s position has become more Expendable you can even say to a lesser degree with the development of a Scotti Pippen Jr like oh okay he looks like a future decent backup point guard in the NBA that makes Marcus Smart more Expendable as the backup point guard for the Grizzlies when he’s not playing you know in the starting lineup in those rotations and whatnot when Jo comes out of the game and he moves the point guard makes him a little bit more Expendable in that role so we’ve had the conversation like he’s going to be making around 20 million per year next couple years and he’s the big contract that’s bigger than the Luke Canard deal that’s bigger than the Brandon Clark deal if you want to go swinging for a big and it’s one of those jiren Allen deals right jiren Allen is making 20 million a year Marcus smt is the contract that you’d have to dangle in those talks that’s the only way that you trade Marcus smt I really don’t see Marcus Smart being traded just like I don’t see any of the other guys on this certain area being traded but if the Big Splash happens this summer like if somebody told me right now somebody told you right now hey the grizzly are gonna make a big slash this summer I’m from the future I’m telling you a big splash happened I’m not worried about GJ Jackson and Vince Williams being moved I’m not worried about John morand Des bang uh Jaren Jackson Jr Derrick Rose if a big slash happens I’m saying was it Luke Canard was it was it Brandon Clark was it Marcus Smart involved in the deal and to a lesser degree even Jake Loria I put Jake Loria on this list because uh you can make the argument now yeah we haven’t seen enough from Jake yet yeah I agree want to see more especially now with everybody being back you know he got a lot of run late in the season and the confidence stood out to me I mean I talk about it a lot you know certain guys be like man you know I feel like I needed that opportunity I learned a lot from it whatever I don’t think that was Jake laria’s Vibe his Vibe was more of I mean I felt like I could have been doing this it’s just you know I’m getting the opportunity I’m healthy confidence is everything in the NBA you you show me a great player I show you a confident player it’s that simple and the fact that he’s only played two seasons the situation is a little bit different than David Rody David Rody just felt like just wasn’t a three he wasn’t a four wasn’t a shooter wasn’t a scorer you wanted him to be a great defender but the metrics weren’t screaming oh great defender I I understood the move Jake lvia there’s still a little bit more meat on the bone there let’s see how next season turns out then you got then you have this conversation next offseason with this next group of players the guys who are in roster spot Jeopardy right now to me we’re gonna talk about them next here on locked on Grizzlies but before we talk about those guys this episode is brought to you by our friends over at FanDuel listen FanDuel is the place where you go uh to make everything matter a little bit what FanDuel is America’s number one sports book coming up next on lock on Grizzlies a couple guys are in Jeopardy going for roster spots let’s talk about those guys here next here on lock on Grizzly welcome back to locked on Grizzlies everyone and recapping what we talked about so far uh the safest players on the roster some guys who are pretty safe but if they’re going to be moving they’re going to be moving probably in some larger deals uh but now we got to talk about some guys who I feel are kind of in roster spot Jeopardy and when I say roster spot Jeopardy these are some guys that the Grizzlies either need to move because they need more roster flexibility or it just makes sense to move on from I’m going to start off with the guys that it makes sense probably more to move on from and to me that’s Santi onama and John Kar John kar’s name was in trade talks in February that is a fact his name was mentioned in trade talks to the point where we asked him about it and I I know you know from people that I’ve talked to that he was very well aware the people around him were very well aware uh that his name were in Trey talk the idea that he could be moved to a team like Boston to a team like the Pacers and so forth but uh John kar’s name was in try talks uh as recently as February now we’re in the summer if you’re familiar with the Grizzlies this is this is where they do most of the deals some teams they February you know they do most of their work then n in Memphis summer time is is is is when the magic happens and for a player that’s already been you know mentioned in trade talks at least that I can confirm uh John Kar is probably one that’s going to continue to be brought up uh his contract yeah you got you know he’s on a new deal there there’s longterm you know next three four years uh he’s under contract here and making over six million per year but there are teams that I think that would take that value you you can you can argue that he he’s a plus Defender solid rebounder you just need to put him on the floor with other scores and he can knock down some open three-pointers he just has to take him you know at a higher rate and he’s starting to do a little bit more of that uh and add more to his game offensively and he’s he’s a good trade Chip he he would be a good trade chip in that case um and that’s a guy who I think if he’s back in Memphis Chris are fine with it cool you know John Kart works as as you’re you know I think 10th or 11th man someone who’s just outside of the rotation the next guy is is Santio D this is a trick youing because some of you won’t agree with me on this some of you say h demichel Santi is pretty safe I’m not ready to give up on sanama and I’ll was ask you this I say okay I’m fine with that I am but when it comes to that ninth spot in the rotation when we know that luk canar Vince Williams and Brandon Clark are going to be in the rotation if Marcus sm’s back in the starting lineup and you add another big to the starting lineup so that’s five guys right there and you know those next three are with Vince Williams Luke Canard and Brandon Clark Taylor Jenkins likes to play nine who’s your ninth guy you say you want Santi to be your ninth guy okay cool okay fine so you said put GG Jackson on the bench yeah okay gotcha then you’re like oh no no no wait no no no I don’t want G I don’t want GG on the bench exactly that’s my point Santi Alama roster spot has become more Expendable just like Mark just like with Marcus Martin the last segment San Alama is more Expendable because of the development of a GG Jackson and GG Jackson is going to be stronger this year because right now he’s you know he’s 19 year old guy still feeling out but G Jackson by the time he feels out is going to be much stronger than Santi Al dama I think you know he just has that frame he has those wide broad shoulders where you can tell dude’s going to be strong right now you can move him around a little bit but eventually that ain’t going to be the case Santi is a guy who has value another team would say yeah we like him as a stretch for on our team he makes sense for some other teams he would make sense for the Grizzlies because of this you know the potential like Santi hasn’t had a great shooting season yet but I’ve watched Santi shooting practice I’m not if he shoots 38% from three-point range next season I’m not going to be surprised cuz the potential is there and that’s why I don’t want to to trade Santi no but you don’t want Santi just rotting on the bench when you know you can get some value for a guy like that that’s and that’s where I think we get to the idea of the idea of R of his spot being in jeopardy with the idea that the Grizzlies could use you know an extra spot on his roster that’s where his name comes up in this conversation and other guy who was in his draft class last guy that we’re going to mention the other the 14th player that we talked about on today is zier Williams this one is a little bit different because Z Williams I mean personally I I love having this guy around his energy is great um he’s a true Pro I always go back to after that uh loss uh it was January I think 2023 January 2023 when the Grizzlies yeah lost against Golden State it was a uh the Rival week game in San Francisco and zy Williams made a had one of the worst games of his career and we know how much it it means to these guys to beat the Warriors and uh I mean players didn’t really want to talk after that game I don’t think J wanted to talk Dylan Brooks didn’t want to talk the locker room just was very just down and Z Williams just sitting in the corner with towel over his head and you know I have a job to do and quite frankly a lot of you wanted to hear from Z Williams after they came and I walked over to him talked to him didn’t really want to talk I mean I’ve been in I’m a sore loser I wouldn’t really want to talk in that position either but he owned the moment and um you know he talked about that moment and that that I learned a lot about zier Williams you know as an individual as someone know he he’s built to handle you know all the criticism that has came his way and it’s probably going to continue to to come his way as a former top 10 pick who hasn’t necessarily lived up uh to the hype that you would want from a top 10 pick even though he was always sort of viewed as someone who’s a younger Prospect who’s going to take a little bit more time to develop but his R SP is in J uh there were reports out there that he was on the trade block in February these were nothing nothing that I ever was able to confirm on my end more like the John Kar stuff but there were reports out there that Z Williams was in a trade talk as well so sort of from the same lens uh if that’s the case and we look at it like look the Grizzlies need roster spots uh even if the Grizzlies trade down right like I’ve talked about the idea of the Grizz straight down the guys that are in the roster spot in Jeopardy here the guys that we’ve talked about in this third segment those are the guys that could be packaged if the Grizz say hey let’s go down to 16 or let’s go down to 19 let’s go down to 14 in the draft you don’t have to give us another pick back we let’s package a player so we can open up a roster spot these are the guys that could be in that conversation so I think that pretty much sums up how I view the roster again some of that is int some of that same things that I’ve been hearing some of that is just gut feeling some of that is just kind of common sense right like johnar of course it’s Common Sense know he ain’t going anywhere any time soon thank you guys for tuning in to locked on Grizzlies on today and remember that lock on has launched the
