Stephen A. CONCEDES the Cavaliers is the BETTER JOB over the Lakers?! | First Take

there are currently two coaching vacancies in the NBA speaking of Hollywood of course the Lakers job is open after Dan Hurley opted to stay with Yukon and the Cavs a top young team in the East is in need of a leading man here’s my guy Wendy on the Lakers versus Cavs job get your second win folks for many people in the NBA I think they would think that the Cavs job is more attractive now you’re going to say why why is that yeah number one the most important reason is that the Cavs roster is better the Cavs have a better team than the Lakers do I don’t know if the Cavs have a better team than the Lakers on August or on October 1st we can debate that the Cavs have a better team secondly the Cavs play in the Eastern Conference the Eastern Conference right now the ability to compete and win at the highest level is it’s an easier path and frankly the Cavs organization might outp pay the Lakers on a head coach all right Andrea let’s break this down what do you think is the more attractive head coaching job would you say Cleveland Cavaliers or Los Angeles Lakers this one was tough because I think an opportunity to coach LeBron is always an incredible opportunity for any coach that wants to cement his career but the Cavs is the better job job security wise we’ve seen what H has happened to Lakers coaches they’re fired after one season they’re fired after two seasons they’re fired after winning a championship the West is a gauntlet just like Wendy just said it’s almost impossible to come out of the West even the top team doesn’t come out of the West so the West is a gauntlet you have more job security all of this also depends on whether or not they’re going to keep Donovan Mitchell which that’s a little up in the air so we’ll have to see Donovan Mitchell is a huge key when it comes to depth when it comes to role players knowing their roles exactly Max stru is going to be big for them I think the Cavs is a much better job in terms of security knowing what you’re getting and playing in the East they made it further in the playoffs this season than the Lakers did yeah uh the conference is a a factor I get that but we don’t know what Donovan Mitchell is going to do nobody knows he you know he’s flirting with the Knicks they also fired should come to New York this is where he’s from he’s from up there Bren Connecticut and all that uh they did fire bicker sta which wasn’t fair I could argue ham I can’t argue bicker sta bicker sta did a good job they want to playoff series he didn’t have two of his stars there against the Celtics they actually won a game they were competitive and they fired Bernie bicker staff really that’s that’s a little weak and the history of an organization has to play into this the Lakers are the second biggest franchise in the NBA Celtics are one Lakers are two Knicks are three those are your three franchises Bulls would probably be before those are your franchises Cleveland is not on that level LA’s got some sex appeal to it that’s why they fired their coaches so recently that like you would take that job with lack of job security because of the franchise history that’s why coaches are getting fired left but Cleveland just fired Bricker staff why’ they do that you named one how many have the Lakers fired oh they also fired plat they didn’t keep blue yeah I understand they fired ham and they fired hard Vogal I get it I understand yeah all right Stevie let me you chime in for a change go ahead let me hear listen I love me some Genie bus so to me to say something like the Cavs is a better job I you have to take into consideration who you’re working for and she’s a special lady she means a lot to the game but I would have to concede that the Cavs are the better job at this moment in time for a couple of reasons I think that number one one the expectations are exponentially Higher Living in Los Angeles the pressure cooker that it is particularly when you’re representing the Lakers and although Genie bus is one of the the great people you’ll ever meet the reality is is that sometimes when you’re in that market you have to succumb to the pressure and that can be a headache so if you’re trying to have tenure someplace it certainly would be Cleveland over Los Angeles secondly Donovan Mitchell he’s not LeBron James but he is a star in his own right he’s 27 years of age and I don’t suspect that he’ll stay either but because he’s 27 and is as terrific as he is there’s assets that you can acquire for somebody like him because he’s not 39 going on 40 he’s not in his 21st season going on his 22nd season and because of that he’s got Youth and he’s got that youthfulness on his side to go along with his star studded play um particularly in the postseason he doesn’t show up and choke he shows up and puts on a show in his own right so we can’t forget that either you got to look at Moy he’s a big time asset he’s only 22 years of age Jared Allen you know when healthy he’s only 25 years of age the senior citizen on that Squad in terms of the main Cog in their rotation is a Caris LeVert he’s only 29 years of age and so when you look at a Max stru who’s 27 along with Donovan Mitchell a Darius Garland let’s not forget his name a star a starting point guard rather and a really really credible player he’s only 24 years of age and so if I’m looking at it from that perspective and I’m thinking about the assets that I have available to me and then I’m taking into account the the the number of changes the Los Angeles Lakers have made in recent memory combined with the fact that you just made the best coach in college basketball you know calling it a big time offer before we saw it and then you see it and suddenly he’s the you’re offering him to be the sixth highest paid coach in the NBA you know W with five different guys already getting paid more than him but you’re asking him to relocate himself and his family to come and take the Lakers job you’re you’re you’re feeling yourself as a franchise to some degree and you’re not really adapting to the times that we’re living in and understanding from an ownership perspective you’re GNA have to come out of pocket you G have to pay some dough you’re going to have to make that kind of investment because when you’re coaching the Los Angeles Lakers guess what you need need to have some cache that’s what it really really comes down to and that’s what we have to look at I would tell you that the Cavs is a better job right now then the Los Angeles Lakers until the Los Angeles Lakers prove to us that they’ve recaptured some stability in terms of having a willingness to pay coaches not try to pick their staffs and stuff like that and do things a bit differently than they’ve been doing it you think Hurley made the right choice staying in Connecticut uh you know it’s a very tough call I would have gone I think it’s a very interesting point with you with Andrea and what Stevie are saying the Laker roster is is dubious he got a 40y old 40y old in Lebron I love his Emoji by the way it must be me that was funny who LeBron I loved it but you gotta probably deal with bronnie which is another issue altogether bronnie should not be anywhere near the NBA right now let’s be honest wow oh come on he’s not an NBA player you know Steve is he an NBA player Stevie bronnie you’re hot this morning not not not not not not yet but he has he has some people say he has the potential I haven’t seen him yet doggy I haven’t seen him Ste he averaged Four Points a game at USC I mean it’s not like he play no no no no no no no no no no I’m not saying that I’m saying that people were talking about before obviously his heart ailment took place at USC they was talking about the potential that he had he got cleared to play this year but they brought him back slowly and they believe that he may have the potential I’m not saying I haven’t seen doggy I haven’t seen him I’m just telling you what some are saying but others have been relatively critical of him and saying he’s nowhere near ready wow last thing really quick so do you feel like the reason Hurley stayed was because of the money I think the reason Hurley stayed is because the Connecticut thing to him is stronger than the Laker appeal yeah family wife loves it there he’s got it going he’s won the two titles they’re making he’s getting paid what you know better than anybody 89 million a year now when contract comes in we’ll see so let me get this straight the Lakers tell everybody Stevie that this is the guy they want they fly the family out there Thursday night they romance him and the offer they give him is6 years $70 million that’s I mean you got to be kidding me that is a atrocious job they were awful with that [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

On First Take, Stephen A. Smith, Andraya Carter and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo talk through whether the Los Angeles Lakers or Cleveland Cavaliers job is the more attractive one at the moment.

  1. Everything they are saying is true, but what are the Lakers to do. Should the
discontinue as a team. They have to still have a coach.

  2. East has always been easier , guess it’s okay to say it now since LeBron isn’t there. The Cavs is a better prospect cause frankly they don’t have LeBron and no coach can survive let alone work when he is there.

  3. Jeanie Buss is overrated. The Lakers have been a mess since the great Dr Buss died. Winning 2020 was a rare exception to our mess the last 10 years. Its time to admit the lakers are no longer the organization they once were.

  4. The problem I have with these sports writers and tv sports anchors is the
fact they say how bad the job is,
but then they the Lakers can’t find a coach or if the bite Reddick that’s
a mistake. What are they supposed do. At the end of the day, they still have to hire a coach

  5. JAMES BOREGO HAS 447 WINNING PERCENTAGE AND HE IN LINE TO REPLACE BLACK MEN WITH BETTER WINNING PERCENTAGE S THAN HIM.MEANWHKE AVERY JOHNSON ARE BLACK MEN WITH WINNING PERCENTAGESOF 577 AND 526 ANDTHEY CANNOT GET HEAD COACHING JOBS. SAM.CASS3LL AMD PATRICK EWING CANNOT GET HEAD COACHING JOBS.. I CHARGE THE NBA WITH BEING AN ANTI BLACK RACIST INSTITUTION AS IT PERTAINS TO HEAD COACHING JOBS AND GENERAL MANAGER JOBS

  6. Why is the guy analyst keeps looking down on the middle female analysts' thighs the whole time he was speaking?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  7. The Lakers haven’t kept a head coach for more than a couple years since Phil Jackson, they have two old and injury prone stars, and they’ve fired every reliable coach or executive they’ve had like Magic, Byron Scott, and now Phil Handy. They just fired a head coach who has been swept in back to back years by the same team however maintaining a close point differential in both series. Ham was not the problem; yes he wasn’t an excellent coach, but his rotations were not the main issue. LeBron is too old to be the closer and star player and AD can’t anchor a defense anymore. Lakers should structure a long term contract with an experienced veteran coach with nothing to lose such as Mark Jackson and he’ll either bring order or lead a rebuild.

  8. That lowball offer from the Lakers was a plan, knowing he would not accept that offer. It basically was a smokescreen to hire JJ Reddick from the beginning. Furthermore, they are trying to cover for the idea that they have relinquished hiring decisions unto Lebron. 😂

  9. I feel like we should wait and see what's going to happen with Mitchell and Garland before we anoint one roster as better. The Cavs are younger, and the East is easier, but one job being more desirable doesn't mean the same as a roster being better.

  10. Cavs are the better team?? Right, I want to see any of these idiots bet on the Cavs in a 7 game series vs the Lakers. Clowns

  11. Dude Bronny averaged 4 Points, 2 Rebounds and 2 Assists..he ain’t got no business being viewed as an NBA prospect. And we all know why he is though..

  12. AVERY JOHNSON ,A BLACK MAN HAS A WINNING PERCENTAGE AS A HEAD COACH OF 577 AND HE LAST COACHED IN THE NBA AT AGE 47 IN THE 2012- 2013 SEASON
BUT JAMES BORREGO WOTH A 447 WINNING PERCENTAGE IS A CANDIDATE FOR 2 HEAD COACHING IN THE NBA
THE NBA PRACTICES ANTI BLACK RACISM WHEN IT COMES TO BLACK NBA HEAD COACHES

  13. Coaching Lebron in no way is a positive on a coach's career. Outside of Spo (who was already established in Miami) and Ty Lue (who took an already built team back to the finals) no other Lebron coach has gone on to a strong career post lebron. YOu're just the scapegoat for the bad roster Lebron forces the team to put together. And for someone coming out of the NCAA, coaching Lebrons lakers for 3 years could completely destroy your pro career.

  14. Just let LeBron be the coach. At this point he’s uncoachable. If they don’t win, they will blame any coach and LeBron gets off the hook.

  15. Calling the East easy is hilarious. This playoffs just showed how easy it is in the West..the sweeps, series ending in 5. Even their best team the Mavs are choking in the finals…simply a mediocre conference😂
