ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on Lakers’ Next Steps after Dan Hurley’s Snub | The Rich Eisen Show

where do the Lakers go from here now what be don’t know um so you know the guy that they’ve had the most conversation but as far as I’m aware yes is is James burgo now I’m not I don’t have Rob Pink’s datebook I don’t know who he’s talked to someday maybe I’ll figure I’ll find out but um bgo is in Cleveland right now he may have the Cavs he may have an offer to coach the Cavs with them the next 48 72 hours I don’t know maybe they’ll hire maybe they’ll offer Kenny ainson who’s also coming in this week um but if you’re the Lakers you’re sort of the guy that you spent the most time with is um is bgo and he’s in another city potentially about to get another job so if you really wanted James burgo you better frankly you better have made the offer before midnight last night and as far as I know bargo’s at that interview so you know you can deduce whatever you want from there I know everybody’s talked about JJ reck who’s my colleague who I have immense amount of respect for um you know on a personal level I hope JJ gets what he wants and if he wants the uh he wants the Lakers job go get it buddy um best of luck to you um but I don’t think JJ’s done a formal interview like uh bgo and Dan Hurley have so um you know we’ll see the other candidate that they’ve that they’ve talked to that that I know about there could be 35 candidates I don’t know about I’m never going to sit here and pretend like I know it all um is Sam Cassell Cassell is coaching the Celtics right now he’s helping you know Joe Missoula run practice today to try to win win another ring so you know Lakers have some guys who are busy who are on their list and the draft is two weeks from tomorrow and before we get to the finals Brian last question on this is what is going to be the first order or orders of business for the new Lakers head coach well I think you have to have a vision about how you want to play but the the the the big challenges for this Laker organization are the two guys with player options one obviously being LeBron James um the belief SL expectation is that he is going to opt out of that player contract and be or that player option and become a free agent um more to renegotiate and give himself a better terms which is totally fine but when you know when you’ve got an unrestricted free agent you can never 100% say everything’s going to be fine it would be a mistake to for the Lakers not to want to re-recruit LeBron so that new coach is going to have to have some discussions about LeBron about what he wants the team to look like that’s going to be at the top of the list and then D’Angelo Russell um D’Angelo Russell has a player option for 18 million this is a real conundrum you know I could probably spend an hour talking about D’Angelo Russell’s conundrum I know that your audience probably wouldn’t enjoy that but um if he opts into his contract he’s almost he’s very likely to be traded um if he opts out of his contract the Lakers have suddenly cleared $18 million off their books which would give them the opportunity to potentially spend some money their mid-level exception which is 12 million bucks and they could go out into the marketplace and find another player but they’re also having a player who averaged 17 points and shot 40% from three point range become a free agent on them and they may need to seriously consider reigning him if they can’t replace them and so those are big important um front office decisions and you have a draft pick at 17 and you have tradable pieces on your roster that you’re still going to look to upgrade so I would say that you know the Lakers have 99 problems and the head coach isn’t number one uh and by the way like their roster is in a much better place than it was in 2019 when they hired Frank Vogal you know they’ve got a lot going for them it’s just that Rob pinka has got some big you know tough decisions to to make to try to make this team better this summer catch the rich eyes and show every single day on the Roku Channel 12 to3 Eastern for free

  1. During Jeanie Buss's 9-year tenure since the death of her father, the Lakers are 288-425 (.404) Several Low Profile NBA Teams Have Better Records in that Stretch….We all Love Jeanie but at some point She has to look Herself into the Mirror. She needs to bring someone else Into these negotiation to the table other than Herself.Players Play – Coaches Coach,GM's Manage,Owners Own..Jeanie The Owner needs to Step Back as an Owner and Bring in – Hire a Negotiator a New Dept..The Lakers Brand Is no Longer enough to turn things around..Not Into This Day & Age of The New Landscape of The NBA..The Dr Buss Ways of doing things today is no longer fits in The NBA Landscape.Jeanie needs to adjust quickly before it's too Late,But I think we're already here..At The Breaking Point..

  2. Nobody wants to coach LeBron James and AD because it’s not really coaching the team. It’s taking orders from players so I don’t blame Hurley for not accepting the job.

  3. Lakers had a great idea on the vision of wanting a coach that can have a program with developing and utilizing young players moving forward. I think that they need to stick to that. Chris Quinn of miami heat and David Adelman of Denver nuggets both would be excellent options since they both are good with developing players and are young. If not them I'd even look into other top tier college coaches. You have probably 2 years left of Lebron focus will be to compete and contend and then post Lebron you enter that new Era developing and utilizing young players to the test. I'd give any coach a 6 year deal atleast and layout whaf they want.

  4. I’m so bored with the Lakers and their perennial dramas, especially every year during the NBA Finals when they’re not in them! But if anyone can make this latest “drama” interesting, it’s Brian Windhorst and Rich on the Rich Eisen Show . . .

  5. The words "I don't know" shouldn't really be coming out of an NBA senior writer's mouth. These are layup questions that Rich is asking.

  6. Lakers should try to go after UNC Tar Heels Head Coach (Hubert Davis) , Hubert took UNC to the NCAA Championship game a couple seasons ago. He's a former player who could relate to his players on the Lakers and played in a NBA Finals as a player (1994 Ny Knicks Vs Houston Rockets).

Or the Lakers could do a trade with the Golden State Warriors and bring Steve Kerr to the Lakers (were Kerr grew up in the Los Angeles area as a kid). Lakers would send $$$, players and Future 1st round Draft picks to the Warriors for Kerr to Los Angeles. This is what the Clippers did with Doc Rivers when they brought Doc over from the Celtics via trade years ago.

  7. I don't think you can say the Lakers are in a good spot. Losing DLo (cause otherwise you have a guy to trade) for nothing is a big hurt for a roster that doesn't have much to build on. They have the 17th pick and even if they hit on a guy who plays as good as Jamie Jaquez played for the Heat (which would be incredible), they still wouldn't be top 4 in the west. This should be the year Lebron announces he retires after and take a big retirement party like Kobe did. Instead he will drag this out and likely force the Lakers hand in trading all 3 of their last first round picks to get a guy like Trae Young

  8. Until Lebron and Davis are still with the Lakers, it is not an attractive destination to prominent coaches. They are essentially coach killers. 😅

  9. There is a part of me that hopes reddick is hired just so he stops calling games. He’s pretty awful at it.
