KSL Sports Live: Saturday June 8, 2024: New Jazz Unis + Clayton Keller Interview

you watching KSL Sports Live hey there everyone now is the perfect time to cool off from this 90° heat right grab an icy beverage enjoy the next 30 minutes with us here on KSL Sports Live you know have you seen what Kevin young is already doing for boou basketball he offered the number one recruit in the class of 2025 a scholarship y AJ debons is considering college hoops down in Provo we’ll have that coming up Utah’s NHL All-Star Clayton Keller he will join the program what he thinks of Utah so far and the future of the team here and we take a closer look at some of the Utah Jazz possible picks in this upcoming month’s NBA draft we’ll have that and a lot more coming up but we’re going to start off with the best from the big leagues you know and it’s an effort that Major League Baseball is doing to grow the worldwide fan base Major League started what is called the MLB World Tour as a part of that today’s Third Edition of the MLB London series took place the Mets and the Phillies going head-to-head at London Stadium which was built for the 2012 Olympic Games it’s a multi-purpose stadium and turns out it’s a pretty good place for baseball the Phillies have the best winning percentage in the game Mets are three games back of a wild card and the Mets they get on the board first Starling Marte down the line and left run scoring double Mets take the one zero lead skip to the fourth how about this Bryce Harper at the plate just obliterates this pitch solo Homer to right to tie the game up and how about the soccer celebration for the London crowd they love that and then in the eighth take a good look Nick castanos his ninth of the season the Phillies get the win in London 7 to2 in the NL East the Braves facing the Nationals bottom of the first Nats Eddie Rosario opens up the scoring with a two-run double so they’ve got the two nothing lead early on then we go to the bottom of the sixth runner on first Nick sensel puts the game away two-run H to the bullpen and left Washington gets the win 7 to3 Colorado Rockies visiting the St Louis Cardinals top of the 6th rocks are already up a run when Ezekiel Tovar crushes a solo Homer to left that extends the lead to two to nothing and Tovar wasn’t done Rockies and Cardinals with trade blows going into the seventh inning it’s tied at four that’s when toar comes back to hit a two-run homer he now has 10 for the season after the two today that would give the Rockies the Boost they needed they get the win six to five on the road in the Central Division National League Cubs and reds bottom of the third TJ Fredo launches it to right field solo shot ties the game up at one and he’s not done either fifth inning how about another one fredel has just three homers this season he’s only played in 16 games but two of those three homers of course coming today since naty getting the Win 4 to three Milwaukee Brewers visiting the Detroit Tigers bottom of the second tied at one Tigers Carson Kelly to right field Akil Badu comes in to give them a one-run lead top of the six Brewers Trail four to three when Jackson Cho doubles to left reys Hoskins scores and then Blake Perkins gets the green light he beats the throw home Brewers survive this one to win 5 to four all right if you were watching the PGA Tour last week you would have noticed Tony feno was not in the field at the Canadian open he was prioritizing family over golf today in the middle of his round at the memorial he was interviewed by Jim Nance while he was walking up the course about what kept him busy this past week in Utah away from the golf course a week that began on Memorial Day we had over 30 of us just gathered around my mom’s graveyard and we hung out at the cemetery played football we had some food had a little picnic and it was just an overall great time to to reminisce about the wonderful mom we’ve had and then on Saturday uh I was able to baptize my son and uh at the end of last week and it just great Vibes all around so it was a great week to be home and F now seemed pretty rejuvenated by it all this week on the course walks in the birdie putt on number 11 to drop his score to two under for the tournament then his t-shot on 12 was just magnificent he’s going right at the stick aggressive here but he ends up just 3T from the cup that would set up another birdie for fenale he likes it then on 14 he read this break pretty perfectly perfect enough to drop that 13-footer for birdie fow though would bogy his final two holes he’s at two under for the tournament tied for 11th the French Open Women’s final was this morning between IGA shant and Jasmine Pini first set shant playing at the net crosscourt forand to go up 5-2 she wins a set 62 in the second set she comes out dominant powerful backhand palini didn’t even have a chance at that one now we go to match point Pini service return she gets under it and floats it long eish Fon continues her dominance on Clay her third straight French Open title this is the game we live and breathe this is where High Hopes meet Great Heights this is Mountain basketball and wear it proudly I don’t know about you Mountain basketball looks pretty good right two years ago I received a press release in my email from the Utah Jazz with the big bolt headline purple is back then the Jazz unveiled a black and yellow uniform combination with just one purple City Edition uniform a Rebrand that went over pretty poorly with the fan base but this week purple really is back for the Utah jet jazz on Wednesday the Jazz unveiled a purple white and black combination that includes both the mountain theme as well as the classic J note these uniforms will be put into use already this upcoming season however there will be a bit of a transition the Jazz will still wear the white and black uniforms from last season and then those black and yellows will go away by the end of the year and give way to the new black uniform with the J note at the beginning of the new year and that mountain backdrop then next season there will be a new city addition added to the lineup as well that includes that white purple and black uniforms March 19th feels like forever ago right that was the last time Real Salt Lake lost a soccer game in MLS play 13 straight matches no losses a streak that will not continue this weekend why is that well that’s because for the first time this season rsl’s getting a weekend off they could probably use it to during their 13g game stretch RSL has seen some MVP caliber play from Striker chichu at on after recording his second hattick of the season last weekend Chicho leads the league in goals with 16 he also has nine assists so that’s 25 goals that he has been a part of which is tied with lonel Messi for the league lead meanwhile goalkeepers Zach McMath and Gavin beavers they’ve been Stellar combining for the top save percentage by any team in the MLS at 78.9% now when you have numbers like that you expect to see the team at or near the top of the standings right ours sells 33 points tops in the Western Conference three ahead of LFC only inter Miami has more points with 35 but they’re in the Eastern Conference and they also have played one more game than RSL this season rsl’s next match mark it down next Saturday on the road against CF Montreal BYU’s new new head basketball coach Kevin young has been aggressive building his future basketball roster he’s retained D Hall and Richie Saunders and he’s added keada from the U and M mag from ruers and has also convinced some of the top recruits of the nation Elijah Crawford bro Koslowski and ago danham to come to Provo and now the number one recruit in the class of 2025 is in his sights AJ Debona who will play his final year of high school hoops at Utah prep an international boarding school with top Tier Athletics down in Hurrican deons has been offered a scholarship now from coach young deona stopped by the KSL Sports Studios this past week to talk with BYU Insider Mitch Harper and he told Mitch why playing for Coach young is so attractive is good obviously he worked in the league for a long time and that’s you know my ultimate go so I mean I mean obviously he was saying that obviously he knows my goal is league and he’s been working with League guys for however long he has been so that was his like model like he can get me there since he know what what it takes yeah I mean I’m a narrow down after uh after July 21st after peace Jam so I mean everybody’s in a conversation right now I’ll Nar it down in about a month yeah getting him to the league has a lot to do with the coaching staff he’s built you know you’ve heard me mention some of those names that’ll be on the floor this upcoming season for the Cougars young has filled 11 of 13 scholarship spots he says he plans to fill those last two spots before the season begins but of course that’s only a part of the equation the other part is that coaching staff from Chris Burgess to will Voit John Lenahan and Tim Fanning among others all of the coaches play an important role in what coach young is building at BYU this week as summer Hoops practices began coach young told us about the process of building that staff you know that’s in the college space right there’s recruiting expertise and then there’s all Court expertise right and so every guy that I brought in has a specific niche in the recruiting World um whether that’s Geographic whether that’s networks and so forth so each one brings something different there and then from a tactical side I mean I’ll have guys broken up similar to a football staff with the offensive and defensive kind of lanes and then heavy in the Player Development space as well and in some special projects those are kind of the the buckets that they’ll fill M on the outside it’s coming after dnet and it’s mind frame and dnet head in headit with a furong left to go Sierra Leo it’s closing ground it’s D hugging the ra mind FR a little around it but he’s still right there with dor and an absolute Brother D and my frame it will be D and Lis cers to win the bont Stakes at Saratoga there you go the final leg of the Triple Crown the Belmont Stakes not nearly as close as the Kentucky Derby and no Triple Crown winner this year all right you know when the NHL takes Center Stage for its first season here in Utah this upcoming fall Utah hockey fans they’ll quickly become familiar with the name of Clayton Keller Keller is a four-time Allstar who has led the team in points each of the last three seasons he joined Jay Stevens on the KSL Sports Utah Puck Report podcast talking about what kind of team we’ll see on the ice this season yeah I think uh I’m a highly competitive guy um always striving to get better and you know as I’ve gotten older and played longer in the league um I’ve turned into to more of a leader and you know I think I’ve done a great job with that um you know I think you just learned that you know throughout the years I had you know some setbacks um you know a pretty big injury that I was able to to rebound from and um you know that kind of opened up my eyes to you know just a whole another part of the game and um you know I think we’re you know going to be a very fast team skilled team and you know a team that you definitely want to watch not a team that’s going to you know put you to sleep know four or five of us have been here for you know a pretty long time and then you know we’ve had some young guys um coming up that we’ve been around for a while and I just think that you know we’re we’re a super close group and um you know we do everything together and you know there’s not one guy that doesn’t you know like another guy it’s you know a tight room and everyone feels you know at home in the locker room on the road it’s it’s always such a you know pleasure to to come to the rink every day and you know everyone’s you know for the most part you know there’s obviously days where you’re not going to be super happy at the rink but you know the coaching staff and you know us in the room you know always make it you know a good place to you know come and get better and and uh put up as many wins as we can oh can’t wait for hockey to start here in you this fall you know in 3 weeks from uh now Utah’s NHL team will have the sixth pick in the NHL draft who will they take off takes a PE quick shot well we’ll give you a bit of a closer look at some of the potential picks that the Utah NHL team might be interested in at number six as well as who the Utah Jazz may take with the 10th pick in this month’s NBA draft and Colin Saxton second season with the Utah Jazz has been documented and we’re giving you a sneak peek at the documentary that’s out that’s coming up next in three weeks we’ll be watching closely as Utah’s NHL team makes its first ever selection in the NHL draft and with the sixth overall pick there’ll be plenty of talent to choose from in that spot question is what will they pick if Utah decides to focus it its attention on a forward Ivon demidov could be a great Target but only if he lasts that long he’s widely considered a top three pick in the upcoming draft he played this past season in Russia scoring 23 goals and 60 points in just 30 games played then he added 11 goals and 28 points in just 17 playoff games with that team now we know Utah needs defense and finding one of the top defenders in this draft could be a win for Utah Sam Dickinson the seventh ranked North American skater going into the draft could fit the profile there he played last season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League he finished fourth among defenseman with 70 points and fourth with 52 assists Cole Eiserman is a big left Winger at 6 foot 196 he is projected to be taken anywhere from third to 13th in this draft his left-handed shot one of the most dangerous shots in the draft class he had 48 goals and 73 total points in 45 games this past season with the national team development program in the USL we’ll definitely keep our eyes on all of that what else we’ll be watching will be the NBA draft that’ll take place just two days before the NHL draft this month and the Utah Jazz currently have three picks in the draft beginning with the 10th pick in the first round it’s anyone’s guess who the Jazz uh will take or what they’ll do with these picks but could the Jazz show interest in Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham one of the most aggressive freshman in college hoops Dillingham averaged 15.2 points and 3.9 assist while shooting 44% from three-point range he did all of this while coming off the bench for the wild cats playing 23 minutes per game or maybe his Kentucky teammate Reed Shepard will find his way to Utah Shepard projected as a lottery Pick averag 12 1 12 points 4 and a half assists and 4.1 rebounds per game this last season and his shooting accuracy very impressive 53% from the field 52% from the three-point line while taking 4.4 threes per game that’s good the 6-3 guard is just 19 years old another possible pick at number 10 is Matas buellis from the G League ignite the 68 forward has some of the best tools in the draft he loves to finish at The Rim throwing down several highlight reel dunks for ignite while averaging 14.3 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game he can play both the two and the three and has the potential to be a multi-positional Defender as well you know not a bad way to spend part of his second off season with the Utah Jazz for Colin seon is maybe heading overseas and uh where he has been a part of NBA without ERS but this past year was his second year at the Jazz and he always says there’s always more it’s a documentary that’s the title for it that’s been released this week on his YouTube channel and we’re giving you a sneak peek right here on KSL Sports Live the direction of life will always be a to know I say that to say don’t allow the state you’re in right now to keep you there the bigger you dream the more you realize what’s what is possible and what many call impossible don’t allow the outside noise of what people might think or feel about you discourage or intimidate you at the end of the day there is only one person who can stop you from get to where you where you need to get to fight through any adversity fight through any obstacle fight through any challenge be your number one whenever the world tries to put you down but I feel like when I was writing that right there I had to tell myself like keep pushing like push to push to the Finish Line sex as we told you’s been great the last five at home he’s been great the last four overall that was the start the start New York was the was the start of it um first time I I started all season I feel like I I deserved it even just how I finished the season from the start to to now I’m no-brainer I feel like my hard work my sacrifice and just the many many hours in the gym before the game even after games getting them shots I feel like that dedication like really really paid off and you could tell like my game just continu to get better over the season I felt like I was uh one of the best on the team and I felt like I was one of the best in the league the three from the corner might be an eight count there it is good call Mike seon look at this he is fired up a young bull I think the horns are out ston inside and one might be the play of the game get right back up yeah I feel like uh I do remember that I do remember that um I feel like that was that was one of those those bundled up like you know emotions that you just got to you just got to let it out you just got to let it out and I felt like that was that was one of those times your leg was healthy you’re ready to go and you just it hasn’t totally clicked I think consistently the way you want how have you kind of been keeping your unrelenting energy the whole time oh no I’m going keep pushing I’m going keep pushing I keep believing in myself that was a huge game huge win for us and that was super exciting just to to to start to start and show like I deserve to be here I said hey if you look at Colin’s career he goes from lightly recruited to top pick to 20 point a game score then he gets injured then he gets traded what has been the 17 months here to get him to the point he is right now where he’s this playing this well and this much of a positive impact there was a lot of narrative about Colin when he was first traded here as somebody who scored a lot in Cleveland hey knocks it down but wasn’t on winning teams you know that probably seeped into my head a little bit last year uh it would be like taking somebody on a date but calling their ex first I needed to look in the mirror in the off seon and have a little bit of humility about mine and Collins relationship me and Coach relationship over the season even over last season it has been a whole 360 um at the end of day we’ve been we’ve been through good times bad times we argued screamed yelled at each other and I feel like this season he was like okay I’m going to be I’m going to be hard on you and I’m going to coach you and I feel like for me that’s that’s getting the best out of me um holding me accountable for each and every mistake holding me accountable for the little things as well as the big things even um not allowing me to get too high and get too low and just making sure that like okay like just staying coachable at the end of the day everybody going to count you out you know what I mean but like I said the only people that’s with you is your family um through the good through the bad they’re the ones that’s going to continue to push you over that hump and push you through through the finish line so anyone that has said bad things about me I just use it as ammo at the end of the day I use what you’re saying against you I use what you’re saying to prove you wrong and a lot of people think oh just don’t worry about the outside noise don’t worry about um this to that some times also noise is good just to see like okay what are they saying about me and how can I improve when they said I couldn’t shoot I done shot almost what 40 in my career I think it’s like 39 something they said I couldn’t play they said I couldn’t facilitate I didn’t I done show that all that is just to you know I a’t use it for what it is um outside noise and sometimes you got to take and botle it up and and go out there and perform and that’s how I’m looking into it this summer I got a a lot of things I I know I need to work on a lot of things that I need to improve on but I feel like next year it’s going to be real fun popular women’s basketball player on the planet these days but she’s not going to be going to the Olympics read more about it Cel sports.com
