How do the Memphis Grizzlies relate to the current state of the NBA Finals?

on this Friday edition of lock on Grizzlies the dynamic duo Rides Again it has been too long it’s myself and demichel Cole talking Memphis Grizzlies basketball once more I make an interesting connection to the current plight of the Dallas Mavericks and what Memphis may experience down the road we both have a mind meld on Dalton connect maybe not so much on robbert Robert Williams II uh dichael will probably yell at me at some point on this episode and we’ll close out talking about how Memphis and other teams made try to copy Boston in the on the Eve on the wake of them clinching an NBA championship let’s lock in you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day yes indeed we are your team each and every day Apple Spotify Amazon YouTube make to Michel and myself a part of your NBA and Memphis Grizzlies content consumption each and every time an episode drops uh before we get into our pretty meaty Friday edition of the show to Michael you’ve had a very busy week congratulations on your work being done over at 929 as a guest host um I’ve I’ve enjoyed catching up on some of the pods I’m not going to pretend like I listen live because I’m not there in Memphis but I have listened a little bit and you’ve been all over the place as the NBA draft approaches you’re a superstar man well deserved yeah they’re throwing a lot at me at this time of the year you know I mean uh but it it’s fun right you know this time of the year like we’re not covering games and stuff like that but uh you know I take pride in the work that I do around this time of the year you uh whether it’s with the prospects whether it’s just trying to gather what’s going on around the team you know the Grizzles are a very private group like more so if you’re if you’ve been following the NBA just as as a whole you’ll see teams like the Pacers uh the Blazers uh several other teams like you you they will show you who’s working out in the draft workouts and things like that the Grizzlies don’t do that very private uh you find out what you find out you know what you know and uh you know this time of the year people people want to know what I uh know so oh yeah welld deserved and uh you certainly know a lot there to Michel Cole and and we’ll talk a little bit about our our disagreement over time lord earlier in the week because because I don’t know who’s right for the center spot right H yeah I’m I’m it makes me a little worried I appreciate that you listen to the solo shows make nervous well they were telling me did you did you listen yeah hurt my heart a little bit um but we we we have common ground again with dton connect and we’ll talk about the recent appearance you made um over on grind City media doing the mock draft fun with them um well we have a loaded show today and we’re gonna Jump Right In talking about uh and I’m gonna probably ruin this for a lot of people ether right like that’s the name of the song like the be put that’s the nas Beast Nas Ether yeah so Brian wior ethered Luca donic and if you’re an NBA fan you’ve probably heard the rant by now um I have lot it gave me flashbacks to Stephen awami Brown do you remember that yeah yeahall he can’t dribble he can’t another ether yeah um Luca dones got destroyed by Brian windhorst and it’s one of those things that was said if you haven’t caught it it’s all over the Internet you can check it out on YouTube I’m sure on ESPN’s social media it’s everywhere everywhere um but it was so powerful in terms of how specific the critique was of his defense his attitude the way that he reacts to the officials for me to Michael and you know far more about this as a journalists there covering teams every day that is something that doesn’t get said by someone like him unless it came from somebody who doesn’t care that it leaks if that makes sense that’s somebody that’s running something in Dallas maybe not Mark Cuban anymore but that that’s coming from someone somewhere where they are saying this is the issue and it needs to be corrected and willing to take that PR hit which is certainly happening to Luca donic as we speak the reason I bring this up here on the you know as I mentioned earlier the eve of the Boston Celtics potentially sweeping the Mavericks it wouldn’t surprise me if Dallas won game four and then it ends in game five um but on the on the brink of the season ending for both teams one with the championship and one uh with not or without a championship I couldn’t help but make the connection to Memphis because John Morant every once in a while on off the court has blamed others for what’s going on in his career and in his life and jiren Jackson Jr has had silly foul issues and I couldn’t help but watch the end of that game de Michel the end of that game three and see Luca foul out with four minutes to go and see John Morant doing the exact same thing or see jiren Jackson Jr and In fairness from a basketball perspective jiren’s probably the closer comp in terms of making a mistake like that that would hurt the team in that way so the the Grizzlies key players are the exact same age group as Luca donic and they don’t have the professional experience Luca was a pro when he was 16 years old where are you at with this idea that I’m having obviously if they make the NBA Finals who gives a crap right like they’re in the NBA Finals Dallas they never been there yeah Memphis has literally never been there before so there’s a layer to that that I think is different from the Mavs but I look at what happened with Luca and I say oh well thank goodness that’ll never happen to the Grizzlies in my eyes that could very easily happen to the Grizzlies if they’re in that spot next season yeah it can um but I think if that happens to the Grizzlies um I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world I don’t you know uh it it means one you had a really successful season it’s probably gonna mean the future’s very bright because a lot of these guys are very young it’s not a Dallas situation where you’re primarily relying on guy right now uh for the foreseeable future you know Kyrie is around for the time being and whatnot but the situation in Memphis is a little bit different so you’ll have that okay we’re right where we need to be just a couple little kinks here and there um I think that’s kind of where where I’m at with it you know like the Grizzlies for one thing like just B basketball wise I’ve said for a while I think I said it before this series start they’re they’re not far off from Dallas Dallas roster I don’t look at Dallas roster and say oh crap like that’s a that’s a force that’s going to scare me for the next seven years Luka is the only one that he is literally only guy yeah beyond that it I agree with you completely I I I I would have zero if you were asking me to proct top teams in the west next season right now I would have the Grizzlies over the MS I and I tried not to say that throughout this playoff run for them because everyone is going to use their recency buys and they’re high on the Mavs while being the timber wolves and OKC and all that but I’m looking at John Morant Disney B jir Jackson Jr opposed to a uh Kyrie Luca and pray for a third player to have a good game core like give me the the guy the team with the three guys who consistently turn out 20 points every game the difference is you know Dallas I mean Luca the best player he’s clearly the best player of that six uh that I just named or whatnot but uh the point being you know uh getting back to your point to the mental side things that’s the area as it pertains to johnar that I’m really really interested to see this upcoming season because I want to say you know what you just said was important you you talked about jiren Jackson Jr uh being more of the equivalent from the foul standpoint I don’t want to put words in your mouth but that’s to me if jiren’s more of the equivalent to the foul standpoint what we’ve seen in the past johnar is more of the equivalent for having the the mental lapses correct yeah yeah exactly so and and when I say that I’m talking technical fouls if you’ve been watching gz do you remember the season with not really the stuff off the court at all I’m referencing on Court mental lapses the rotation stuff Luca donic being blown by defensively at a historic rate I like John morant’s athleticism I think he’s giving more effort on the defensive end if you replace Luca Don’s name with John Morant in the year 2024 with 2025 I wouldn’t be surprised at all next season yeah I mean we saw it in that Lakers series right remember down the stretch of the game Xavier Tillman uh Desmond Bane Dylan Brooks and uh jiren Jackson Jr they all were switching everything when LeBron James came in John morant’s Direction they they hedged it they basically were saying he he’s clearly going that job he wants that mismatch the Grizzlies weren’t letting it happen it was very obvious that Taylor Jenkins at that time was like look we and me and you were talking about it why wasn’t Luke Canard playing couldn’t have two guys on the court who who would consider kind of like big defensive weaknesses from that standpoint and the playoffs exposes those things regular season you don’t see it as much playoffs uh teams the margin of a is so small you’re attacking those things I wouldn’t say I’m worried because because that’s that’s a couple steps up the ladder of for me like I’m worried about if they’re gonna get out the second round next year that’s that’s that’s what I’m worried about if if this team is going to shoot well enough if the bigs that they get are going to be good enough to battle zubba to battle Rudy Gober to battle joic like all the West teams got their guys who’s your guy because if you don’t have your guy we saw it in the first round Anthony Davis 34 and 14 and stuff like that and and you’re gonna be gone so I’m worried can they can they get past the second round and then you know once that happens we’ll cross that bridge but uh it’s it’s definitely something to think about but it’s it’s a couple steps up the ladder right now uh they need to uh check off a couple points before that and to your point if we’re talking about the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA finals next year that means they nailed the off season how however they do it right whether it’s drafting Don is a double double or something whether it’s trading for Robert Williams I third and he has the healthiest season he’s ever had Brook Lopez has a Renaissance Jared Allen is the is a dude literally they sign Andre Drummond like whatever it is they nail it right and it goes exactly the way it’s supposed to and at that point you roll out the ball and you do the best you can the the difference for me is Memphis hasn’t been there before Dallas has and I think that you can enforce that a little bit more with these Mavericks as opposed to the Grizzlies but let demichel and I know what you think do you agree with de Michel and I think I kind of agree with demichel to be honest with you getting out of the second round is the first major step for these guys but again I couldn’t help but watch windhorse uh just destroy Luca donit and think again basketball specific not talking about offc court issues um this the type of mistakes that jiren and jaah have made in the past I saw some similarities there when we come back here on lockon Grizzlies I mentioned Time Lord I’ll give to Michel a chance to to be mad at me over my response to his drafting him uh earlier on this week plus we we will end on a positive note at least in that segment because we we found each other again with Dalton connect and that’ll be uh what we focus on next coming up on lockdown Grizzlies but first this episode lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by prize picks with prize picks you can turn $10 into $1,000 in a single demichel probably gets mad at me for a little bit and then we’ll hug it out at the end stick with us welcome back to lockon Grizzlies I’m Joe Mullen joined by my co-host Michael Cole of the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee he’s an award-winning Memphis Grizzlies beat riter he’s been a guest host over on 929 FM ESPN there in Memphis been doing all sorts of great guest spots if you’re thinking to yourself Joe you’re just sucking up to demichel because you know he’s mad at you yeah you’re exactly right because I came out and I you know we talked about The Ether beat a moment ago I feel like it kind of ethered the time lord idea um maybe not entirely successfully because I do think there’s a I’m interested to hear your counter because I think there’s an easy Lane that I left open there oh yeah um you gave me you gave me a layup but I yeah I did I’ll dunk it in I’ll yeah I I figured that was coming um so I’ll stop killing the lead and like I said we’ll end hugging it out with Dalton connect but uh your response to my my time Ln disdain yeah see it’s one thing to disagree with the ACT I’m okay with that you know and we saw in the comments a lot of people were okay with with with Tom Lord and some people were were not because of the entry stuff and I thought more of that was kind of the self-explanatory part I look everybody knows this I grew up in Memphis Joe covered the Grizzlies during all those days I know the Chandler Parson stuff I I I know know you know the long history guys who have injury problems and you want to stay away from them I’m very clear on that so the idea of getting him you don’t sign off on that trade unless you you dot your teas and eyes and make sure physically everything’s okay all right now that we got that easy part out of the way now let’s get to the real sure you you don’t want Tom Lord former you know second Team all defensive player big part of a Celtics finals team uh In fairness I did acknowledge all that you did you did but to say that you would take Brook Lopez a aging 36 year old when you got a 26 year old who’s dealt with some injuries but has not even reached the prime of his career yet I can’t I there were there were so many other guys I mean because look bro Brook Lopez has clearly played his best basketball and what I think is he still has good basketball in him but Milwaukee has in such a great situation for him the fact that he has Giannis the fact that he had Drew holiday the fact that he could just drop in the paint and if you listen to Mike Richmond and Me Talk locked on on on the podcast how Mike sold me was you’re not getting Robert Williams to be an 82 game player you want him for those 16 wins in the playoffs uh you still gonna get Donovan clinin still gonna have Brandon Clark Robert Williams can change games defensiv L as well as either of those guys and potentially even better I mean I’m thinking of the idea of having Robert Williams and jiren Jackson Jr in my front court and and everything that teams throw at The Rim just gets swatted into the fourth row that’s what I’m thinking about so with all that being said Brook Lopez he’s gotten played off of the floor last couple times I’ve seen him in the playoffs like it’s even in that series when they won the championship it was Bobby poris down the stretch because Chris Paul and Devin Booker were pick and roll and they’re they’re playing that drop coverage and they’re cooking them when we get to the playoffs we saw with Stephen Adams already I want a guy who’s gonna be in the game impact the game and that’s what I’m thinking of with Robert Williams more so than a Brook Lopez he doesn’t even fit the timeline Joe he’s 36 like what I no Mar smart fit the timeline think he just turned 30 he’s fine I think that we you make a fair point and I think that going back and listening to that episode that that is the the reason you do this trade if you do it is the Grizzlies as they are currently constructed should win 46 to 48 games yeah you you add a Donovan kingan in my opinion and I don’t want to speak for you yeah I think that adds a couple more wins for sure because you have a legitimate big who does a lot of the things that makes this team click if you watch enough Memphis grizli basketball especially when Stephen Adams was on the floor you watch clinging tape you know it to be true they are very similar players at a cheaper cost it makes all the sense in the world Robert Williams is somebody that to your point you would not need until the playoffs and look at the NBA finals for example going back to our example that we talked about earlier in the show if Memphis is fortunate enough to be there game one’s on a Thursday game two’s on a Sunday game three’s on a Wednesday right like there is no concern about being burnt out if Robert Williams doesn’t play until the playoffs and he’s just that X Factor for you I I could see that conversation I think that is a good selling point um but yeah that was the layup yeah I realized listening back I probably could have thought of somebody better than Brook Lopez I was focused on not giving up the draft pick that was my focus but it that it wasn’t the best uh the best choice I will acknowledge that um a good choice that both of us made recently I had an episode about Dalton connect uh you recently you brought up your appearance there on grind City media with Kelsey Wright she’s great for the Grizzlies and you’re doing the the mock draft with grind City media’s draft coverage you represented Memphis I know a thing or two back in the day doing mock drafts and representing the Grizzlies you did a good job taking Dalton connect the way the board shaked out I would have done the exact same thing and I think that this is where we come back back together my friend it sounds like and again I don’t want to put words in your mouth I know you like wear out of Indiana if if kingan is not there and you said this to Kelsey you’re not looking for projects you want guys that can produce right now yeah and connect is that guy at that point there literally is nobody else in my opinion that combines that ability to produce now with what Memphis needs and scoring like aulton connect in the words of the great Joe Mullen X are we trying to win a championship or not if you’re trying to win t-shir you need to get t-shirts made for that one if you’re trying to win a championship you go get a three-point shooter who’s ready to play in playoffs and I’m gonna take it another step further I mean wow why am I gonna say this people are gonna overreact go for it I don’t care whatever dton conette the way that his profile projects if he turns into the type of player that I think he can be uh he’ll be more probably more capable of knocking down playoff three-pointers than Luke Canard oh well that’s not I I agree with that completely I that’s not too wild right because when did Canard was a lottery pick wasn’t he like 14 yeah went late he went late Lottery 14 yeah um I think that’s actually I think he’s a better Canard like I I would be okay with him being the Luke replacement long term yeah I’m I’m talking about the younger version I think long term but but we’re talking about the right now I think next season in the playoffs when teams because Luke Canard said it himself like in in so many words every time I ask him like Luke why why aren’t you able to get too many three-pointers off this game that game that game uh I gotta be more physical I gotta be more physical he knows what he has to do but when you hear to me when I hear a player say something so many times and it’s over the course of multiple Seasons it’s a weakness at that point he can’t physically do it yeah it’s it’s he knows what he has to do but it’s not a strength of his game it is not a strength of his game uh to deal with the physicality of that’s why certain teams if you look at Luke Canard shooting profile who he shoots well against when it’s the Clippers when it’s the Lakers when it’s those super fysical grab your shirt a little bit when you come off that screen bump you a little bit uh guys those are the teams that’s a little bit harder for him to gr against and as good as he was from the standpoint of you know when he was on the floor in that Lakers series the team was better you can make the argument that you know if he doesn’t get it they they have a better chance of winning that series but he wasn’t making a lot of three-pointers he he just wasn’t and and D KET you know just because he’s more naturally comfortable as a scorer luk Canard is shooter D KET is a shooter but he’s scorer too and uh that’s why when people say oh he’s the replacement and things like that he could be yeah down the road like you thinking of your year head but as far as next season I want both on the roster in addition to Desmond bang I think that Dalton connect is a playm maker as well at the very least for himself yeah right maybe he’s not a playmaker for others to be honest with you I see some gigg Jackson in the way that he scores the ball at times so I think that they do it in different ways but the fact of the matter is connect can still get his own shot he can find a way to create for himself and I do see the value in that so um what let us know if you agree it sounds like to Michael and I are are Plan B being Delton connect it sounds like we’re on the same wavelength there if it’s not clinging or even aware right like I think it should be clinging but yeah I’m not where’s probably my trade down guy as long as the as long as it’s a big at some point they can I’m kind of at that stage yeah uh let us know what you think in the comments about Dalton connect obviously we talked a little bit about him early on or if you just want to make fun of me for suggesting Brook Lopez I think I I earned that on this Friday edition of lockdown Grizzlies when we come back we’re gonna close out the show talking about Grizzlies talking about the NBA being a copycat league and how Memphis can copy Boston if they can stick with us welcome back to lockon Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X joined by my co-host to Michael Co the Commercial Appeal there in Memphis Tennessee it’s been a blast of an episode we’ve laughed we’ve cried we’ve hugged it out the dton connect and now Full Circle episode yeah we bring It full circle we started off talking about the Dallas Mavericks how Memphis could potentially mirror some of the mistakes of Luca donic uh in the future and whether or not that matters I think it’s fair to say that it’s possible that uh that John jiren encounter some of the same kind of onc court flubs but at the same time if Memphis is in the finals I don’t know how many of us will be complaining um the Celtics are the team that is on the cusp of getting their 18th Banner which I think will make them the highest ranked champion in the NBA I think the Lakers have 17 championships and this will be Boston’s 18th more than likely right it’s not over quite yet but for all int yeah for all intensive purposes it’s over it’s hard to imagine this Boston Celtics team losing four times in a row to anybody much less this Dallas Mavericks team I am curious to Michael we’ve talked about being patient before nobody in Memphis except for maybe jiren right I think every once in a while you hear Rumblings about trading away jiren and I don’t think anybody really takes that idea fully seriously the idea of trading away Jaylen Brown was a very serious idea a couple of years ago and that didn’t happen and obviously the Celtics are reaping the benefits so aside from the idea of patience with a core that is still relatively young what do you think the Grizzlies can take away from this Boston Celtics run maybe not to copy yeah but to try to emulate since this is a league where people look at what’s working now and they try to model themselves off of that whether it’s the short term or whether it’s the long term like you can make an argument the Memphis Grizzlies franchise the last five years have modeled themselves after the longterm success of franchises like the Spurs and the Bucks Joe what if I told you the Grizzlies are already emulating a lot of the things that Boston do yeah I would agree with that they already are Boston led the NBA this past season by a wide margin 43-point attempts game close to two almost two more attempts than the next closest team it it was something that was noticeable and I mean we just saw a game where they missed 29 three-pointers but they still made 17 because they took 46 um Boston loves to chunk three-pointers you know a team that finished in the top five in three-point attempts this past season the Memphis Grizzlies Memphis Grizzlies they’re top five should they be anywhere near the top five no should anywhere near if they keep Luke Canard and get dton connect and still have Desmond Bane maybe we can talk put him in the top two at that point but right now the ideas are there Xavier Xavier Tillman Senor played in game three of the playoffs for Boston Celtics big big impact I think he played 11 minutes was plus nine knocked down a three-pointer had two blocks he made a nail in the cofin corner three yeah do you know why they put Xavier Tillman in the game tell me dichael in the words of Joe moula because one he played against the Mavericks a lot duh two he played in a similar defensive scheme as Joe moua said himself basically the switch part of it the Celtics wear you down defensively they can switch a lot of switchable guys we talked about this at the uh earli in the show a little bit with Xavier T J Jackson Jr uh Dylan Brooks and Desmond Bane used to be in the game the only guy that they would hedge was J and then the other four was just switching everything and what it does offense you can run the cutest prettiest play in the world but if they’re just switching everything it’s gonna come down to you either having to take advantage of a mismatch or you’re just gonna have to isolate against someone and try to get a dribble Drive scoring opportunity that’s what those type of defenses do but at the same time you have to have a multi-positional uh defensive caliber players then there’s one more thing this one everybody ain’t gonna like as much first two everybody’s like yeah tell me more D Micha y’all ain’t gonna like this one as much the Grizzlies actually like the idea of jiren Jackson Jr playing the five Allah Li how Boston has went away remember we we were just talking about uh the 2022 where we talking about Robert Williams and I went back and watched some of that you know Robert Williams in 2022 and they did a lot of Robert Williams Al Horford parents in that playoff off Series against Golden State you don’t see that in this series those wings are playing and it’s porzingis or it’s Horford or it’s tman it’s been Luke Cornett in in small D you’ll even see Jason Tatum play the five yeah they ain’t playing about that the point is the Grizzlies have similar ideas I know the idea with the big yes they want a big but I’ve never said that that big is going to be the starting F the fifth start uh it it could be you know another Ford uh it could be someone who’s already on the team it could be a big but the point is they like the idea of jiren Jackson Jor star that’s why it has not been completely dismissed as the that oh jiren’s moving back to power forward we have not heard that that’s not the case it depends on how the draft works out who they get uh free agency how all that works out but the Grizzlies are okay with the idea of J starting the season as a starting center so the point is as I wrap is up though uh they have a lot of similarities with Boston one of the biggest difference being that they have an actual true point guard in John Mor uh that’s a big difference because the point guard is your general and and you know that’s why the Grizzlies offense looks a lot different uh but stylistically they have a switch heavy defensive scheme they want to get up a lot of three-point attempts and they like the the idea of being able to go five out for a large part of the game uh so they have some of that but the difference is execution grizzli got to make some changes around the roster uh to be able to to play that sty if you want to be top five in three-point attempt per game you better get you uh four like that team you know Jason Tatum’s 37% Drew holiday and Derek white are over 40 Kristoff porzingis you know just shot great from three-point range this year Jaylen Brown had a down year and he still was at what 35 36% so you just got to have the horses for it got to have the horses it’s funny how that works if you have really good players you’re usually really good that’s strange but in the nuts and bolts of the game like the reason that the Celtics are in a position to to possibly sweep the Mavericks is the scheme in the x’s and o’s in the way that they’re executing yeah that is very much uh the case I do get a kick out of the point that you’re making here if Memphis does go on a run they make the Western Conference Finals maybe they do heaven forbid make the NBA Finals someone’s gonna write a think piece how the Memphis Grizzlies are trying to be like the Celtics and you heard it here first on lockon Grizzlies pH FKS they’re already a lot like the Celtics as we stand right now and it’s going to be fascinating to watch how that continues to evolve going into a pretty important season in Memphis for Taylor Jenkins the head coach John Morant the Superstar Zack kimman the GM and everybody associated with the Memphis Grizzlies franchise thank you guys so much for being with us on this episode of lockdown Grizzlies again it’s so good for both of us to be back together again to Michael let’s do it again on Monday’s edition of the show I think that there is you know probably going to be some NBA Finals conclusions some bows that can be tied could tman his flowers a little bit Yeah I think that would be nice shouting him out and and continuing to acknowledge the the run that the Boston Celtics have gone on but the eventual end of the NBA Finals means we’re that much closer to the draft maybe another mock draft Roundup all sorts of different directions we can take because I think on Monday partner correct me if I’m wrong we’ll be nine days away from the NBA draft since they’ve moved the first round up to the Wednesday yeah yeah we’re getting we’re getting close in the two-day drafting that me me or you uh really like but I’m just thinking out loud here too uh going back to tman one of us maybe looked this up or maybe one of the lock on viewers will tell us this but it’s happened a few times where guys immediately leave the Grizzlies and go win championships like there’s a running list here it’s not just a is the biggest one happened numerous times yeah we got to figure out how many times that’s happened it’s starting it’s a good luck Tor type thing or something you know yeah it’s a good idea I like that that’s a good vibe and that’s a good reason to be with us on Monday for lockdown Grizzlies make sure you’re liking commenting rating reviewing subscribing however you get podcasts at Apple Amazon Spotify YouTube make us a part of your NBA and Memphis Grizzlies content consumption 1. I'd just take Eady at 9 if DC is gone. There's just not much difference in the two for me. The Grizzlies just need a giant to play 20 or so minutes a game, rebound, and be big. Otherwise, anyone under 6'11 is a no-go for me, regardless of skillset.
