Lakers LOOK BAD for Dan Hurley turning them down?! Stephen A. & Big Perk REACT 🍿 | First Take

Bakers were all in on the Yukon head coach but they couldn’t entice him with their 6year 70 million offer instead Hurley will return to the Huskies to chase a third straight Champion let’s get it this week Hurley spoke on what it might have taken to get him to say goodbye to Yukon to leave a place at any moment in your life I think that like to say that that it’s not a motivating factor the finances to leave a place is definitely a thing to leave all that behind they’re probably is a number um I don’t know what that is windy windy windy were you surprised the Lakers didn’t make an offer to Hurley that he couldn’t refuse yes and no um so the way he articulated it there that it’s very hard to want to leave Yukon and it’s that that was his motivation but there’s probably a number maybe not in those EX words but you would have to assume that that sentiment was was communicated to the Lakers either by him or by his agent who by the way represents many NBA head coaches and so on one hand I’m not surprised because the Lakers have you know on one hand I know he didn’t really want to leave Yukon at the end of the day but on the other hand I know that the Lakers at times have lost out on bidding for coaches because they haven’t been willing to pay and if you heard that sentiment and your reaction to that was to make him an offer that didn’t even make him a top five highest paid coach I mean I I don’t know what I don’t I don’t know how I can help you there um you know they did pay Phil Jackson it took a lot of years it took him leaving the the franchise and coming back after three titles and they were falling on their face they did finally pay him $10 million a year when he came back and won his second two titles and his at the end he was making 12 million but it took a lot to get him there they got out bid for coaches a couple of times in 2019 and I I’m not even going to sit here and tell you that I think it’s a horrible look for the Lakers because they have proven that that what what’s most important is talent and drawing Talent is where they’ve got to spend their money but they were serious enough to make this effort to go after Dan Hurley to bring him out to actually offer him the job and then knowing what they what they did what he just communicated and making an offer like they did the problem was Molly it was never about money the needed it to be at least about about money and and clearly it was never about the money because they never offered high enough for him to consider it that way it does it does make the Lakers look bad right over the last four years Wendy Stephen a Miley the Lakers have been dysfunctional and when you look across the league okay when you look at all the teams that are having success they have what they have a good coaching place they have a foundation that’s the the first part and then you have the players and then you add the pieces around your franchise players and then you put in the system and then you take off from there Hurley was the best available guy for this job there’s no way in hell he flies to LA and you let him walk out of that and you let him leave and go back to the east east coast and think things over with his family he’s not leaving La without signing and having a press conference if I’m in the front office or if I’m Genie bus or Rob pinka at the end of the day you want to build for the future that’s been the problem for the Lakers over the last four years really anytime you have a LeBron J James Le team you’re always going to look at the now right did Frank vogle did he deserve to get fired absolutely not I understand him and Russell Westbrook didn’t see eye to eye but that wasn’t Frank voger call that was a LeBron James and Anthony Davis call to bring Russell Westbrook in okay Dolvin ham did he deserve to get fir absolutely not in my opinion but did so I mean at the end of the day you’re not going to blame ad you’re not going to blame bra uh Brun and you damn sure not going to blame Rob pinka even though Rob pinka knew that this Laker roster wasn’t good enough to make a Deep Run in the Western Conference you have to have a coaching place you have to have a foundation I thought Dan Hurley was the perfect guy for this job they should have NE never let him leave out of LA and now they’re back to where they started from so now they’re going to go out there and I’m not trying trying to disrespect JJ reick or Sam Cassel I I would love to see those guys get a shot but they’re not Dan Hurley right and I’m not saying danen Hurley has an NBA resume but what he has done on a Collegiate level shows me all type of signs that he was D he’s destined to be a good coach or a great coach in the NBA as well I I’m sorry I am surprised that the Lakers didn’t make a better offer to Hurley but the reality is none of us should have and that’s the caveat that we have to throw in there now obviously I’m a little bit different than Brian wih horse and Kendrick Perkins so let me show y’all how a little bit different I am you know because you know me and if you know anything about me you know where I’m going where is the Los where is the Lakers franchise where does the Lakers franchise reside that would be Los Angeles right crypto you know where I’m going big perk what state is Los Angeles in that be California California so you know me you know where I’m going right so we understand it’s the sunshine it’s ttin to town it’s the beautiful weather of Southern California because it can’t stand the weather in Northern California because it’s similar to New York why the hell fly all the way to Cal Northern California when I can get the same weather in New York City that’s just me but Southern California now that weather’s special okay they know it and as a result you have a weather tax that’s what they call it okay why do I bring that up when do you know this federal income tax rates about 37% do you know that I made a mistake you know that I made a mistake y’all state income tax I’ve been walking around talking about how it was 13 like 13.3% to be to be exact I forgot that as of January 1st it went up to 14 it went up to 14% 14.4 to be exact so the third the 37 plus the 14% that’s just federal and state it don’t count all that other stuff right okay oh by the way I got the I got the Artic I got an article right in front of me did you know that not only that but there have been several proposals over the last few years to increase the rate to 16.8% income tax rate in Cal in California this is true if you’re Hurley and you’re coming from Connecticut and you’re counting the dollars cuz clearly he was and your genie bus and your Rob Pinker and you’re the other ownership members of the ownership group for the Los Angeles Lakers how in God’s name do you come to this man with a salary that’s ranked sixth for a two-time reigning National Champion who’s universally recognized as the best coach in college basketball today why would you do that it makes no sense so I’m looking at it from that standpoint and I’m saying my Lord we know you missed out on tyo we know Monty Williams went to Phoenix instead of coming to you we know you locked up with Frank vogle because he ultimately delivered the chip but then you booted him out the door Darin and you make all of this noise knowing that at least 51% of his money is going to come out of his pocket now if Stephen A Smith could sit up here on national television and break take down tax rates that is directly going to impact his wallet how the hell did not somebody in the Lakers organization not know that how did they not figure that out we know they know better what they thought was is what they’ve always been guilty of thinking we’re the Lakers and because we’re the Lakers we might be able to get away with something that others might not and what Danny Hurley did was say no you do not you don’t get away with that uh-uh there’s better options and it could end up being the best thing that happened to the Lakers because maybe just maybe somebody will wake up their Finance folks this ain’t about basketball y’all Rob pinka don’t have any control over what was offered to Danny Hurley we know that decision dollars comes from above and damn it it might not be just jeie bus they got to get their act together and get with the times you want a big time coach to come up in there then pay for it and the less you pay the less you may end up getting that’s just the fact absolutely Wendy thank you so much for being with us have a wonderful weekend enjoy the game tonight and we’ll talk [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

On First Take, Stephen A. Smith, Kendrick Perkins and Brian Windhorst join Molly Qerim to talk in-depth about whether they are surprised Dan Hurley turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach job in favor of remaining with the UConn Huskies.

  1. The Lakers need to clean house. Jeannie won't sell the team but letting LeGM have his way has borderline crippled their future. Also, GM Rob needs to be fired and thrown in the trash twice for good measure.

  2. The lakers need to a coach that will bring lebron to the block and play pf. Have another pg bring it up and feed it to lebron. Lebron needs to read the defense and make the right play. The run and gun offense isn’t for lebron anymore. Lebron has another 5 years if he plays pf and plays like Karl Malone and Barkley in the 90s.

Curry and klay era is done. No one is as capable as them on the same team .

  3. Who wants to coach LeBron? He destroys teams and ends coaches careers because he feels that he knows better and shows dissent when things don't go his way. The best thing for the teams in the league is for LeBron to leave. No one wants to deal with him nor his baggage!! He's like a tornado leaving all kinds of mess in his wake.

  4. I don’t understand what all this talk about the Lakers being cheap is. There are 32 HC jobs in the NBA. Yes Hurley has proven himself on the collegiate level. But he hasn’t done ish on the Pro level and yet LA was willing to make him the 6th highest paid coach out of 32. To me they made a very fair offer and should not have broken the bank on a coach who hasn’t proven anything in that profession. He may in up being a very good NBA coach but let him prove it , if he wants money that will move him because he also very well not be a good coach in the NBA. Can you imagine the noise that would be heard had they made him the highest paid coach? People would have lost their minds🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

  5. Dude wasn't ready. I think cold feet. I'm not putting this on Lakers. Stupid.

  6. He said there probably is a number, but he just don’t know what is. But he definitely know what it AIN”T!!! 😂

  7. If California keep on raising the taxes like this that population gonna drop to only elites living there lol.

  8. Everyone been knew this about the lakers but people was so busy hating on bron they ignored & put all the blame on him this why you gotta have your own mind & judgement cause perception will brain was you smh

  9. Well we're seeing one of the reasons nobody wants the job. The finals are actively happening, the lakers haven't played since may and they have been a topic of discussion everyday, literally every day. That's a scrutiny nobody wants. Great job by the way from the network that had an issue with lebron saying words at the beginning of the finals but has spent this entire series talking about him and the lakers

  10. These comments are hilarious. The Lakers were smart not to pay an unproven college coach albeit from a reputable basketball family $100M. They need a coach with the combination of a sharp basketball mind and unshakeable confidence to lead a storied franchise. I would argue none of the previous coaches outside of Pat Riley and Phil Jackson met those requirements. So good luck to Hurley in the pursuit of a 3rd national championship.

  11. It’s not a bad look. Its worst look. No excuse for this stupidity. Come on, they insulted him with the lowball offer, but turned out they insulted themselves.

  12. Perk loaded😂 he studdaring look all around 😂😂😂😂 everything's but the screen. One eye open 😂😂😂

  13. He did the right thing. Lowball offer. Then taking a job with No real job security. Lebron doesn’t. Respect his coaches. And Davis isn’t any better than Lebron. UConn. Is a Great job. To have.

  14. $70 M for 6 years in California after taxes, inflation rates, and the cost of living is a lowball offer from the Lakers. Hurley did a W move.
