Who are the college coaches who could jump to the NBA? | College Basketball
so our dribble handoff this week had had an interesting question who’s the college coach uh that you could see make a move to the NBA sometime soon I I went with Dan Hurley I’ll explain it in a second first though tell us who uh who’s the coach you went with I think that’s a squirrel um I well knowing that you know Dan Hurley was an obvious one and uh and someone was going to pick it um I went with Tommy Lloyd at Arizona now we did this question this drible off four years ago um and at that point we had guys like Bill self Tony Bennett were on that list um who were not repeated here and I think understandably so but I went with Tommy Lloyd uh it is an intriguing one you know who who would be now that Hurley has turned down the NBA who would be maybe the the candidate most likely to still uh give the NBA shot I think Hurley is at the top of the list and he’s got the shortest odds of any of them this is not published as we speak but it will publish later on Thursday um I’ll give you our names across the board here with our staff and then we can get our picks gp’s got Hurley I took Tommy Lloyd uh KB Kyle Boone has Eric muselman um David Cobb has Micah Shrewsberry which is a sneaky good choice and then Cameron Saro took Nate oats which I also think is very possible uh there’s a number of candidates guys that weren’t mentioned that I think it’s not impossible if they were to win big you never know um I guess like Bill self never say never right Never Say Never Bill self uh if Virginia got like really really good again and Tony I know it’s a nonzero chance with Tony Bennett I I almost wonder if if Shawn Miller really you know gets it going does he maybe have a chance one day I think there’s a there’s a chance for that um by the way Mike Hopkins just joined the Phoenix Sun staff earlier this week former uh Washington coach so he uh is taking a break from following Pearl Jam literally on its tour to join the sun staff I like Tommy Lloyd uh sticking out there in Arizona because because he’s got the temperament as I wrote similar to Hurley he runs a pretty sophisticated and and fun to watch offense there he’s also off to an awesome start in his career no hasn’t made a truly deep NCAA tournament run yet but 88 and 20 at Arizona a one or two seed all three seasons set up to be top 25 again in year four and most importantly whereas like Mark FW is not an answer to this question because Mark f is too deep into his career but Mark f is is an assistant on the USA basketball team that’s going to go compete in thep PCS uh next month Tommy Lloyd is in the USA Basketball pipeline right now he just coached the u8 uh USA basketball team to a Championship uh and the fact that he’s 49 if he wants there’s at least he’s If he if he wants he’s got two decades of head coaching ahead of him right and if if obviously if he’s good enough to validate that which obviously looks to be the case I could see Tommy Lloyd being a guy where if we look up in two years four years Arizona is continually a one two3 seed and particularly I don’t know if this is mandatory GP but I put it in my in my capsule if he can get Arizona to a final four and National Championship obviously helps but like just even getting to a final four I think being in USA Basketball circles the people you know who you get to meet the relationships you build I I think if Hurley is the is the shortest odds I would actually put Tommy Lloyd number two yeah I think Dan’s the obvious answer but Tommy’s a great answer you know you could drop him into this is just one of the ways I think about it you could drop him into an NBA staff meeting right now like this minute and he’d fit in he speak the language um he would not be overwhelmed by any aspect of it I could easily see I’m not trying to run him out of Arizona but I could easily see him in the NBA someday um in the chat uh somebody mentioned Kevin young BYU without doubt obvious that’s a name that we didn’t have on our list that he just got the BYU job so yeah yeah but it’s a good answer good answer he has the NBA Roots you know you just pop right back yes um but I went with Dan and this is something something we talked about earlier in the week so I don’t need to go over it too much again but I know that he just picked Yukon over the Lakers and that has been interpreted by some as he just picked college basketball over the NBA but I I don’t think this is that as much as it he picked his current situation at Yukon over what would have been his his situation with the Lakers in other words his situation at Yukon is an opportunity to become the first person um since John Wooden to win three straight national championships in Division one men’s basketball um he’s got a preseason top five team more than that a team that is co-favorites right now with Kansas according to FanDuel to win the 2025 NCAA tournament so that’s like option A go do that or um go coach a franchise yeah it’s the Lakers and that’s one way to say it another way to say it is uh a franchise that just finished seventh in the western conference with the best player who’s about to turn 40 years old later this year and who you know by the way could opt out of a contract and he’s not even there um next season in your first season and nobody other than Phil Jackson since P Pat Riley has lasted more than three years as the head coach there so you want to do this Yukon thing as I just described it or this Los Angeles thing as I just described it and oh by way by the way the Los Angeles thing requires you and your family to move 3,000 miles other side of the country away from everything you’ve known as we got closer to decision time it made total sense to me that he would pick the Yukon thing over that Los Angeles thing but as I pointed out in the dribble handoff his circumstances aren’t always going to be exactly this like I don’t think he’s always going to be coming off of multiple national championships I mean he might I’m not ruling it out you know I’m not ruling anything out at this point maybe he never doesn’t win the NCAA tournament again maybe just every year he and so he’s always coming off of back to back to back to something right I’m not ruling anything out I’m watch I’ve been watching the same tournaments you’ve been watching the past two years it took me longer than most to recognize what was happening I admit it I tried to tell you I admit it took me longer than most and to that Dan Hurley says that’s a squirrel you were a squirrel is what you I I accept it all right I was I was I I really like Purdue you know how I felt about Purdue I I I looked up one day I was 60% bullet maker it was a weird thing to go through all right so it took me longer than most to get where where everybody’s at but I’m here now I see it maybe they win every NCAA tournament we have going forward all right but it it’s reasonable to assume they might not which means that uh he won’t always be coming off of back-to-back national championships with an opportunity to to win a third straight so his Yukon situation will change at some point going forward and um also the situations of the franchises that are going to pursue him will be different um I suspect whether it’s a a year from now or two or five at some point an NBA franchise that is a set up better to win bigger immediately will pursue him an NBA franchise B that is more geographically sensible for his family that will pursue him and maybe he doesn’t have a preseason top five team coming back maybe he’s not coming off back-to-back national championships and uh those things combined could lead to him actually making the jump that some people thought he was ready to make right now yeah I I agree with you took the scenic rout GP and I agree with what uh with what you’ve laid out there and I I did think I did an HQ hit on Tuesday um I expect us to be next April back in the Dan Hurley watch conversation because I expect Yukon to be a really good team and I expect Yukon to be either a number one number two or number three seed most likely in the tournament next year and with that to probably win at least two games and that’s going to do nothing to damage Dan Hurley’s case to be an NBA coaching candidate so this and Yukon fans take that exchange obviously like you were spared him leaving now speak of the devil he’s this dude is literally calling me yeah I’m saying I here on the pocket he’s literally calling you right now and unbelievable universe is very weird send him send him straight to voicemail should I send Dan Hurley to voicemail right now send him straight to voicemail he’s getting sent right to say say if you don’t text him straight to voicemail text if you don’t have time for Genie bus we don’t have time for you I’m not texting him that that’s what I would text I’m not texting him that that’s too funny that’s too funny um if he could reject jeie bus you can send him the voicemail I think that’s fair not doing that that is that is spooky um anyway I think we’ll be in that uh we’ll be in that conversation with Mr Hurley every year going forward um gonna be real weird if he was calling you to tell you he decided to change his mind he what if that’s the case coach like what if I just missed a scoop Matt what if I just missed it Matt I’ve had second thought hey it’s uh yeah cuz he’s giving it to me yeah that’s because that’s how that’s going down actually as as we’re podcasting literally by the way uh wo tweets uh sources JJ reck will formally interview for the Los Angeles Lakers coaching job this weekend about time and a strong hold on and a strong performance is expected to move him to the Forefront of the franchisees search so well I would expect he has a strong performance he performs strong doesn’t he he performs strong I can’t speak to JJ reck’s uh performance indicators but um every time I’ve seen him speak I seem to think he performs pretty strongly I think he’s going to perform well I think he’s I think he’s a good performer oh man that’s too funny um that yeah by the way that as an aside that will be fascinating to see if J.J RIT gets the Lakers job I think that’s that’s Cinema and all that good stuff that’ll be good theater um and it’s good for us it it suggests we might have a bigger bigger future than we think I agree I mean I AG I I agree I like I I like it when good things happen to podcast yeah yeah maybe not the Cavs this year but you never know like I mean yeah I mean I I don’t know that we can go straight from you know the podcast in boot to the Lakers but like you know can we get to you know can I get can I get an interview with the Jazz oh you’re so you’re still scking like NBA regardless okay I didn’t know if you were hoping like maybe to to Parlay this into like a vacancy in the American next season or something like that okay no I’m higher no no no I may I a in higher perhaps not for the most glamorous glamorous franchise in the NBA but um you know I wouldn’t mind I wouldn’t mind getting a sit down with the magic I think they’re doing all right right now oh trivia time trivia time yeah Paulo huh no no but to our audience that is very dialed into both uh can you name the head coach of the Orlando Magic yeah Brian Hill I think in the history of the mag Hill was the coach of the magic when they went to to the finals in 1995 people I think in the history of the magic that’s the only coach I know no I think so jacqu vaugh jacqu vaugh you got no chance here Jamal Mosley yeah of course I’m gonna give you right now the list of the Orlando Magic is Orlando Magic’s head coaches in the history at trivia time how many head coach the Orlando M all right trivia time again uhuh what year did the orlandoo magic become a franchise oh that was 1987 you’re close 1989 yeah how many head coaches have the magic had one Brian Hill stop he’s the only one well trivia time how many times has Brian Hill been the Orlando Magic’s head coach I think like seven it’s twice all right Matty gcas Matt gcas was the first I remember that I once I I once went I went to multiple games as a child in the CMI area where I lived in Florida as a younger child I saw multiple Bulls magic games with Matt gcas leading the way there so when I think Orlando Magic I don’t think Brian Hill I think Matty gcas Matt gcas Brian Hill Richie adado I feel like Scott skyle should have coached him whether he did or not we’re getting there hold on okay Chuck Daly what I couldn’t I didn’t believe Doc Rivers come on you remember when he coached the magic Doc Rivers oh oh sure sure Johnny Davis Chris jent Brian Hill back in 05 to 07 That’s My Guy Stan Van Gundy oh yeah of course fight with he used to fight with the white Howard every correct that that remember that clip where he’s talking about how much the white Howard hates him or something like that and then Dwight how walks up on it doesn’t even know what’s going on yes I do remember that’s a good one it’s amazing Jack vongh I knew ja James bgo coached the magic for 30 games in 2015 and then the moment you’ve been waiting for yeah Scott Skyles I knew it one season one season Scott Skyles Frank vogle I got to be honest I had no idea Frank vogle coached the magic FR vog has coached everybody yes he and he’s still under contract for everybody everybody Frank Fogo gets paid for 30 franchises right now he has he has direct deposits every day from somebody Steve Clifford and now Jamal mostly 14 coaches since 1989 for the match isn’t it while you say Steve Clifford all these guys they just B they everybody they all coach everybody uh can I get some booting holer with that I hear you man I hear you I hear you the whole way man it’s the same 50 people coaching every NBA franchise oh man that’s to once you get in you’re in like that’s true it doesn’t even matter if you’re good it just like once somebody says you can do this system I know yeah then it’s like somebody else thinks you can do it we got people talking about James bgo being a candidate for the Lakers it’s like sure why not you say so I mean he’s had a he’s had a job before so I don’t know why we would done I mean he had a job before so I don’t know why we would we wouldn’t give them the job again no wonder they’re starting to look at podcasters I mean what are your options you could either hire somebody everybody else is already hired or a podcaster those are the options it’s either it’s either JJ reck me or Alex Cooper who do you want to coach your NBA team me JJ or Alex or Doc Rivers who’s I think on team number nine so yes exactly yeah the do rivers it’s it’s basically at this point if you’re an NBA franchise you got to hire me you JJ reck Doc Rivers Alex Cooper or Joe Rogan that’s where you’re at that’s who that’s that’s where that’s your candidate pool at this point or Steve Clifford obviously
