MARC STEIN REPORTS MONTY “LIKELY” TO RETURN TO THE PISTONS! ELEVEN REASONS WHY HE SHOULD NOT!

welcome to the Piston fanatic I your host Dave Dalton and I’m excited to share my passion and perspective of our Detroit Pistons as we go on this Fantastic Voyage together I’ve been a dieh hard piston fan since the days of Dave Bing and Bob laner I’ve also been the barity basketball coach of a very successful program in northern Michigan thank you so much for listening I appreciate each and every one of you and it mean a lot to me if you would subscribe and like we got some news not the news I wanted to hear on Friday news broke that after the hiring of Fred Vincent the shooting coach um from New Orleans that we stole and I’m excited about is a clear signal that Monty will be back with the Pistons and um so that’s what they report that he will likely be back and so that this a source with knowledge of Detroit’s thinking described it as a likely outcome so I don’t know I don’t know I think Vincent we would wanted him and being able to keep him whether um we hired Monte or not they did Coach together he was working under Monty’s staff back in the you know years ago with New Orleans and for five or six years and so now there that I don’t know what exactly who the source was it’s interesting because James Edwards III and Omari sanova who are beat writers for the Pistons have not reported a thing James in fact actually said that he thought that um that the signing to Vincent what did not mean that necessarily we were going to um have Troy come back Monty come back excuse me so anyway I just want you to let you know I I’m not for fighing coaches I’m a coach I love coaches I feel bad for coaches to get fired unnecessarily I support coaches no coach is perfect every coach makes mistakes Chuck Dy my hero he he was a great coach he did things I disagreed with I thought he should play Rodman more earlier before he started playing anymore but you know there’s just a lot of things but I think that um I’m going to go through a list of things so it’s not just one thing that Monty did wrong that I feel like he does not deserve to come back and again my hope is that this report is inaccurate and that trean Langan comes to the realization that Monty shouldn’t come back and now my fear is that you know Tran’s not been here all year he has not got to see everything that’s happened behind the scenes he does not know and depending on who he talks to and I know there’s a lot of people who love Monty Williams I think by all accounts Monty’s probably a wonderful person and I you know if you are you know heartbreaking his wife was killed in a by a drunk driver in a car accident years ago and he’s remarried since then but he spoke at her funeral I listened to that and it was very touching and he’s he’s you know in a lot of ways a great man but he is not the great coach for the Detro our Detroit Pistons so um like I said it’s not just one thing is a bunch of things so number one though you have to say 14 and 68 if that’s not a reason and you know everything was not his fault the roster was flawed there lots of injuries but there’s been lots of flawed rosters with the pistons and with every other team in the NBA there’s lots of flaw rosters in the history we’ve had some terrible teams and they have not finished 14 and 68 and there’s been that’s one of the worst records not it is the worst record in piston history but it’s one of the worst records in NBA history all the teams you know and they’ve all had flawed rosters lot not all of them but lots of teams have and they have not finished this badly so you know whatever you want to say you know whether he deserves all the blame he doesn’t but you know it’s just it’s crazy and you know there it’s interesting with coaching Jason kid he made it to the NBA finals there were he was trash by so many people on the internet and by it looked like he was going to get fired people said he was no good Chris Finch who coached the Minnesota timber wols they he was criticized it looked like he was on the hot seat and to get fired and then they had turned around had a good year so could Monty turn around things and with a better roster could we have a good year yes it could happen I I would never eliminate that idea from possibly happening but that doesn’t mean that he deserves to come back and and I’m again number one was the record and again I didn’t blame everything on him another thing so before he got hired I he wasn’t the guy I wanted but I thought it wasn’t a bad hire the thing that I and I said it on my podcast that gave me pause is his handling of DeAndre Aton so DeAndre Aton they make it to the Western Conference finals and in the game seven they’re getting destroyed and he benches DeAndre Aton and there’s always there was rumors that there was you know tension between him and Monty and then they they showed they at one point in the playoffs with Monty with his arm around him and talking to him and people made a big deal about oh see how Monty relates to his players well Monty benched him you know the whole team was doing terrible they be they they lost like by like 50 in the game seven I don’t know it was a it was a terrible blowout but he decided that it was you know DeAndre Aon is the only one that got benched and didn’t get to play so and then there was everybody knew that there was tension there and there was a problem and then the next season comes around they resign Aon to an extent for four years so he’s going to be part of the team well they they traded him but you know he was going to be part of the team so you know Monty was the coach and he still had to deal with him but they get back to training camp they’re two or three weeks into training camp and a reporter asked um DeAndre Aton has Monty talked to you about what happened at the end of last year he said no Monty hasn’t said a word to me and that was a red flag in my eyes also I don’t know how much Monty was was involved with Jay Crowder so Jay Crowder started for the sons when they were really good and then all of a sudden they decided they were going to start uh cam Thomas or Cam Johnson excuse me and and instead and so then I think when they notified him that then there was I don’t know what happened behind the scenes but then for whatever reason they did not bring him back he did not play he he a good player who had been a starter for them set out the year until they finally traded him to the bucks so I don’t know again I can’t I don’t have ideas whether that was uh all on Monty but still those things lead you to believe and especially after we got to see what happened with Ivy and Jaden Ivy was promising rookie he did Sensational at the end of his rookie season and then he comes in all fired up to have Monty b as coach and you know he’s one of known as one of the hardest workers he puts in more time than anybody and then Monty chooses to bench him and play Killian Hayes over him and play him more minutes it was not just a thing you know it’s not just that uh Jaden didn’t get to start it’s just that he still played kiling more minutes killan Hayes has one of the worst shooting efficiency um numbers in NBA history and we just kept playing him and everybody knew we didn’t have shooting and he just announc you know after he started his last game with the Pistons he got cut and then not one team the last two months of the season has signed him as even their 15th man and so that just you know who knows what Monty obviously there were things about uh Ivy that bugged him you know and I I can attest to the fact that there were players even though I might have loved them as a person that there were things the way they played that you know if a person you know took bad shots or didn’t Sprint back on defense or those are things that that bothered me and I don’t know what bothered him because ivy again he’s one of the hardest workers on the team so th those are red flags so but you know that’s just judg me judging Talent you know and figuring things out I always say that a good coach figures things out they figure out what players to play what defenses to play what offenses to run coaches figure things out what what putting players into what positions to play those are all good things that coaches decide and so but Monty decides that even though and here’s the other thing we were a young developing team we were not going to win and make the playoffs and so we needed to develop our young players but yet we decided to play Isaiah livers over assar and um Kevin Knox they got to play they started over him and then also the mer the roller coaster r that he put so assar starts I didn’t think he was going to start when the season started I you know I loved him at I I wouldn’t have drafted him I can admit to that that I thought he was a bad shooter he didn’t play at a a good level of competition he had lots of time where he worked at with uh overtime Elite on his shooting but he still was a terrible shooter and we needed shooting so that was why I didn’t like him and I wasn’t sure about because the competition level was so mediocre and overtime Elite but he started and he played he was sensation he was the talk of the league and then he plays like I don’t know how many games he started and played a good start and he was considered by everybody everybody in the media from all around the league was saying that he was one of the top three rookies in the league and then all of a sudden he benches him and for guys who you know if if it was for a guy who was good it would be one thing but he started him he benched him for guys that weren’t any good and his minutes dropped and you know how that impacted this young player who goes from starting and getting all these people telling how great he is I mean he was getting so many rebounds and and Steals and playing such great defense and he was even scoring points and then all of a sudden he gets he gets jerked around but anyway just shows Monty’s judgment and the same thing with Killian over uh jayen iy how any coach could think you know that is not a good judge of talent and he’s going to be our coach so oh then you know a lot of these things it didn’t take a rocket scientist it’s not like iag all tons of my fans but listeners felt the same way and they knew the same things and even even um podcasters and uh NBA analysts from all around the league were you know they paid attention and thought this is a joke this is terrible what’s happening and so but the all bench lineups so how many times we would start a game you know and it took Monty 50 games before he ever played assar and Cade and Duran and iy together it took like 50 games before he finally figured it out and so but we but we would play these all bench lineups and we would the the starters would be ahead then we put in the all bench lineup and all of a sudden it’s a 16 to4 run and then all of a sudden we’re way down in the hole and then we try to fight back and then sometimes it happened again in the second half and he would then you know he would even say that after a while that well I got to stop using the All bench line lineups and he didn’t do it and then like the next game Jaden Ivy’s the 11th player he played 11 players in the first quarter I think or at least the first few minutes of this by the first few minutes of the second quarter Ivy was the 11th player to get put in and you know it just was crazy but he would say one thing and do another thing and then they had to have an organizational meeting and they had to tell him and it was like oh yeah I just figured out oh this is a good idea to play Jaden Ivy and put the ball in his hands once in a while and it took you know 60 games and somebody else had to tell him to do it so you know like I said he he his indecisiveness of what he said in the press conferences about players and strategy that he then didn’t follow up on and and most of us thought that some of the things that he said were the right thing and we were all excited and then he turned around and did what he did before anyway so anyway a thing that um that did bother me some and I’m not for coaches going crazy and getting technicals all the time but we got screwed this year and it’s a common thing for the worst teams the refs know who the good teams are and the bad teams are and they and they’re just human nature they give calls to the good teams I mean I’ve watched it my whole life and and so we would get screwed Monte wouldest it after the that we got screwed but he would never fight he would never get mad and not that you need to throw blow a gasket and get a technical but why he never showed you know and a lot of piston fans said he got that contract he didn’t want to coach this year and we just kept on throwing more and more money and and so he just didn’t care about coaching but I I don’t know where was the fight and I want to remind you of this and I because I disagree with a lot of people that the thing is when he said No at first he didn’t want to coach his wife was dealing with cancer and supposedly by the time that we offered him the biggest amount of money that had been resolved to the point where she was doing okay and you know so there was time there but he he didn’t he he was Phoenix owed him three years and 21 million so he could have sat out three years and got 21 Millions now if we don’t in fact like the report says that we might take him back again for another year he would get 60 some million dollars to not coach so not feeling to bad for Monte about that because again it it never seemed like he cared we haven’t heard anything from him but yeah so um I think that he um we didn’t see players improve how many players name me Kade improved during the season and he loved Kade and I think you know I think he formed a good relationship with Kade and I think Kade liked him because he always you know was real positive about Cade and so I think that that’s one thing but who else improved so in fact s got worse you know he he played pretty good at the end of the season when he got to play part of the reason he played worse because just because he didn’t play as many minutes Ivy so I got a lot to say about Jaden Ivy and so I think that people’s uh knowledge of him and what they think about him is different than um what really happened last year you know I think he was bad at the end of the year but I don’t think that there was I think that that was just something that happened and it happens to other players not just him so um I think that Duren did Duran improve everybody’s down on Duran and he did play Bad defense his defense did seem to be worse than it was before but doesn’t the coaching staff take some respons possibility for breaking down filmou Duran and showing him you know there were never even any signs he’s talented he has athleticism he’s strong and yet he never was in the right place to help out on defense he never hardly blocked a shot and so you know and what other players can you say really improved during the season did our team get better on offense or defense our whole defense we we never got better on defense and we didn’t have great Defenders we were and we had a young team and they don’t defend well and then our offense our offense what I I would watch plays we we had this one play where Kade would pass the wing somebody pin down break up Kade would cut down set a pick then he would pop back up then we would get him the ball on the top and then he would go play one on five again but anyway we just didn’t have movement and things you know you you watch Dan Hurley’s offense at um Connecticut is way better than our offense and there never were signs there was just a couple sets that we ran on occasion rare occasion and there’s times when you needed to let j iy j j iy would go you know 10 possessions without touching the ball or you know just having a SAR stand in the corner is you know not with any movement or putting him in the pick and roll there was just no imagination or nothing ever run you know it doesn’t seem like they put in any time or thought into that another big thing was um the end of games that’s when a lot of strategy is done at the end of gamees and we were the worst end the game team you know with um close games within three points in the last three minutes we were by far the worst team in the NBA and clutch time which is five minutes left and Five Points difference we were by far the worst team in the NBA by far and does the coach get all the blame no they don’t the players got to make shots and things but still we were by far the worst it wasn’t even close and he definitely deserves some you know some the same for that so anyway I just hope you know it’s it ain’t over till it’s over so it hasn’t happened yet we don’t know for a fact that he is going to come back as the coach and I know it’s you know I think that um trean Langan you know again there’s people that like Monty a lot he’s a real personable person and he tugs at people’s heartstrings and he knows the people that you know he’s friends with people a lot of places and so if those people are influencing trasure Lang decision you know I guess that could happen but it will be a big detriment again I am not denying that it couldn’t happen that we could have a good season we could win 30 Games next year with Monty is the coach we could we have a better roster just having panto and Grimes and everybody back healthy and you know a year older and a new shooting coach and free agents you know we get Naz Marshall and some stuff things can turn around but still I just listed you 11 reasons why Monty doesn’t deserve to come back and so it’s the C the cumulative effect of all those reasons not just one and I think that you know he just proved that he doesn’t deserve to come back so anyway I know you can disagree with me that’s fine I know we all have different opinions and that that’s my opinion though and I hope that I hope that I uh I hope the report’s wrong I hope that he’s not back I hope that we get a new coach like Mark dagnal that a young guy or whatever that that knows the game and that can turn this thing around and anyway I want to thank you for listening again listen to the next episode of three Championship drive with Lance cap rosi I’m G to be on it I’m going to be a guest I’m really honored that Lance asked invited me to be on the show but be the reason that somebody feels loved and listened to and go Pistons

A source with knowledge of Detroit’s thinking say piston Monty Williams likely to return! We discuss 11 reasons why he doesn’t deserve to!

  1. I'm glad Monty's staying. This is his year to prove themselves. Let's hope they start building a roster than can shoot and space. 3-point shooters need apply.

  2. As he should. been telling yall this since the season ended.

A bunch of fast food chain workers thinking they know whats best for a billion dollar company is hilarious.

  3. The knee jerk reaction is just to fire every coach every year. You yourself noted how Coach Kidd and Coach Finch were on the hot seat. It's actually kind of ridiculous. Even coaches who win championships are getting fired two years later.

I'm from Michigan but I've lived here in Nola for the past 15 years. I loved Monty when he was here coaching the Pels. I enjoyed seeing him succeed in Phoenix. I think he will eventually get the Pistons into the playoffs but damn if yall want him gone after year #1 I don't really know what else to say.

  4. Where is everyone within the organization? Serious question. No formal releases…no quotes from management… no introductory press conference.. literally nothing. I find that incredibly strange. Almost as if they are hiding every move from the public.

  5. It's going to be hard to root for this team. I don't know a single soul in Detroit that likes Monty as coach.
