A Brandon Ingram trade will be more complicated than you think for New Orleans Pelicans

we’re all trying to figure out where bran and Ingram will be traded but I’m going to tell you why we won’t actually be able to predict the trade and I have evidence to back it up and how worried should we be about Fred Vincent leaving it’s Monday’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s [Music] go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans at NBA part of the locked on podcast Network your Monday tipping off a week’s worth of shows we’ll get into some draft coverage throughout the week more brain Ingram trades I have a couple of other topics as well that I want to cover and I’m excited to get into this one because been doing some digging going through past trade seeing if we can maybe predict the future a little bit when it comes to a Brandon Ingram trade uhuh and I’ll tell you why that’s coming up in today’s episode of lockdown Pelicans plus Fred Vincent leaving going to the Pistons should we Panic is it fine I’ll let you know in the third segment of today’s show and of course thank you for making lock on Pelicans your first listen today and every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast covering everything you want to know about this pel team go to prize.com lockon NBA and use code all lowercase locked on NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 where’s Brandon Ingram going to go where is he going to get traded who are the Pelicans getting in return that’s like the number one thing that I get asked right now and I get it this is something they need to figure out though I do think they could keep him too but this is what they’re kind of actively working on in the draft right the the fit this year was clunky between Zion and Ingram it just didn’t go the way we wanted to see despite getting 49 wins very good something felt real disappointing about this season and starts kind of with your two main players I think so Zion’s under contract for a long time Ingram definitely seems to be the odd person out particularly after just basically a bust of a playoff performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder so where’s he going to go we got to probably stop trying to predict we’ll still keep talking about trades we’ll still do a trade Target Thursday all of that looking at things but here’s the thing a Brandon Ingram trade is likely going to be very complicated likely going to be three or four teams involved and when you get that many moving Parts with it it becomes very hard to predict no one’s going to have a very accurate three or four team deal two team trades tend to happen for bigname players it’s we’ve we’ve seen it but when you get into that and look at these trades and I looked at kind of Superstar trades to try and figure some of this out when you get into just kind of one-on-one deals right one team and another team two team trades it’s usually involving a rebuilding team Donovan Mitchell to the Cavs as the Jazz started their rebuild right you even have the Pelicans trading for CJ McCullum as the Portland Trailblazers were going through a rebuild and retooling their roster right there when you look at some of the teams that Ingram has been linked to the Atlanta Hawks aren’t going through a rebuild neither are the Timberwolves the cams make a ton of sense but they’re kind of putting out the the smoke that they aren’t interested in doing anything so when you look at this it makes it tough to come up with a okay Brandon Ingram for Trey young kind of deal it makes sense but it’s just not that easy and what complicates it even more is that David Griffin the lead decision maker here for New Orleans has a history of combining trades to accomplish multiple things you know fill multiple needs when they did the Drew Holiday trade it was a four team deal not just as simple as sending him to the Milwaukee Bucks it was a four team deal involving all of those picks but that also brought Steven Adams back to New or or brought Steven Adams to New Orleans and then when they traded away way Steven Adams basically Steven Adams Ronis Valen chunis right that was kind of the Crux of the trade involving some picks and things like that it was also done as a three-way deal with the Charlotte Hornets that involved a Devonte Graham signing trade and even the Anthony Davis trade this one gets a little more complicated was a three- team deal with the wizards but you could easily see that as a bigger deal a bigger trade because they also moved off of Solomon Hills contract with that fourth overall pick that they acquired from the Lakers in the 2019 draft Solomon Hillen four was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a salary dump and to kind of trade down and acquired two other first round picks to get Jackson Hayes and nil Alexander Walker So Not only was it the Anthony Davis trade but it was a trade that got rid of Solomon Hills contract you see what I’m saying there’s multiple things being accomplished in some of these deals you see this you know what you often see on trades on draft night is that maybe a team agrees to a deal but you wait till the start of free agency to finalize that deal so the trades agreed to but nothing is done until free agency with the start of the league New Year because cap numbers then kind of reset or the cap number goes up technically and then it opens up a bunch of different options we may see a very similar situation here in New Orleans with a Brandon Ingram trade the Pelicans have multiple needs we’ll talk about those in the next segment here could they accomplish multiple things in one Brandon Ingram deal that maybe rolls in a free agent signing that rolls in another team giv pieces back to New Orleans maybe or Ingram going to a rebuilding team but then the Pelicans somehow getting Trey young or someone like that in kind of moves that are are making those type of things happen in more complex fashion and I think that ultimately might be what we end up seeing likely what we’re going to be end up seeing yes you have these smaller deals that are one team and another team but when it comes to these kind of complex things unless a team is completely rebuilding then I don’t necessarily think you’re going to find it a deal that makes as much sense because frankly you might have been able to do it already now the the offseason hasn’t really started the finals are still going on so the Pelicans not making a move not having a deal done for Brandon Ingram yet does not worry me in the slightest but I do think it might drag on into free agency I don’t know if this is something that’s going to be completely fin ized even you know thought out on draft night which is just a couple of like a week and a half away at this point in time almost two weeks away so that’s that’s that first major deadline that’s coming up pretty quickly and you might start to get some of the framework of it but as we’ve seen in the past some of these deals get held up for a week or two as other pieces start to get fit in and until a deal is finalized you can always put more things in involve another team make it a sign and trade make it a trade exception any of those number of things and David Griffin has done a very good job of doing that I think you know you can question the Devonte Graham signing and things like that but if that was the guy they were going to get rolling him into a trade maybe makes more sense with some of these moves so that ultimately is maybe what we’re going to end up looking and that means none of us are going to be able to predict this trade and be very accurate with it to kind of get maybe more of an answer to that and to kind of understand it a little bit more you know we need to figure out you know the question then is what do the Pelicans need and how could they address some of those needs let’s look at that the biggest needs we know it’s a center point guard but there’s more to it than that let’s look at that coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s episode well tell friend about the show and be coming every day that means you listen Monday through Friday to lock on Pelicans for your second listen Ross Jackson making sense of everything mini camp with the New Orleans Saints what’s going on with Alvin chra his contract he’s going to let you know everything going on with the black and gold make lockon Saints part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day your second listen today so we just talked about the brain Ingram trade and that it’s going to likely be just very complicated like it’s really tough to figure out and it’s also Complicated by the fact that maybe he doesn’t have that big of a market maybe he does we don’t really know his contract situ situation is definitely impacting some of this knowing that if you’re going to trade him do you need to give him a Max that’s going to pay him on average 52 million dollar a year and are you comfortable with that and it doesn’t seem like a lot of teams are unless they’re maybe a rebuilding team and they know they kind of need to overpay for some Talent so is there a way to figure out a three- team deal that solves a lot of what New Orleans needs all at once and maybe that’s where we need to start looking when it comes to a Ron Ingram trade could you figure out a three- team deal between New Orleans the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks does Brandon Ingram go to the Pistons does Jaylen Duran then come back to New Orleans and maybe somehow they also get Deonte Murray as well that fixes the center spot which is one of the biggest needs for the Pelicans that fixes the guard spot the point guard which is one of the biggest needs that they have creation right he still shoots threes he fits pretty well here I think you probably can’t get Trey young in that sense but if you can fix Phill two needs two opportunities that you have all at one time maybe that’s the direction that New Orleans wants to go because David Griffin looks to get a lot done in some of these trades I think and I think that’s worth looking at at the history with it right could you then maybe trade another pick to Atlanta so they still have the first overall pick the fifth pick I think is what Detroit has and something else for Deon de Murray like that could potentially work maybe you send Dyson Daniels there something along those lines starts to maybe make some sense all of a sudden you get the rebuilding team that knows they’re going to need to pay or overpay Brandon Ingram Detroit does that maybe that’s Complicated by the fact that traan Langdon was hired there but maybe it also means he loves brand and Ingram because they do like brand and Ingram here they’re not just kicking this dude out the door but they’re looking to do what’s in the best interest of that franchise this franchise and that might not be $28 million over 4 years on an extension but doesn’t mean they don’t like him they like him here they love him here to be perfectly honest with you but they still need to do what’s right for this team to go and try and win it’s a business after all not a personal thing right so maybe that’s how you look at it but could you also maybe figure out a three- team deal with the and we’re just kind of spitballing here the Pelicans the the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta hwks could you send Brandon Ingram to Chicago could you send Zack LaVine to the Atlanta Hawks get then Trey young or Deonte Murray here in New Orleans with that sort of deal and then you do a signning trade with um Andre Drummond to come to New Orleans and be the starting center he’s still got some life left in those legs gives you solid like rebounding a little bit of Rim protection there um kind of not really but it’s a serviceable center and then you still draft someone at 21 to be that rim protector that you want is there a way to find a deal like that what about assigning trade with the uh Golden State Warriors for Chris Paul you know they’re they’re almost certainly not going to guarantee the $30 million that he could make there and that seems to be a massive overpay and they want to shed some salary if they can is there a way to figure out a deal that makes sense there of a signning trade at a contract the mid-level exception something like that for Chris Paul to come in Off the Bench kind of wrap up his career career here in New Orleans where it all started there seems like there could be potential there we’ve heard rumors that the Golden State Warriors don’t want Brandon Ingram potentially but maybe there’s a way to figure out a trade like that that involves another team too you know could you do something like Brandon Ingram to the Golden State Warriors Chris Paul in a signning trade to New Orleans Klay Thompson in a signning trade to the Detroit Pistons Jaylen Duren coming to New Orleans maybe you’d probably need more than that for Brandon Ingram but maybe the fifth pick then something along those lines there’s ways to start to get kind of creative then again you’re addressing your point guard you know you’re still trading bra Ingram which is a goal too and then you get your Center as well so point guard Center coming back to New Orleans in that sort of deal that’s I think the way we probably maybe need to start looking at this trade because it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be just as straightforward and looking at how David Griffin operates as I’ve been saying and I’m reiterating The Point again this is something that he often looks to do and then maybe it drags on to free agency right well it would then because you’re doing signing trades with players so that would then you know get finished around July 6th 7th something along those lines you know maybe a guy gets drafted and a team covets him and that’s involved in the trade somehow too so you start to get the framework of it on draft night and then it expands and expands maybe another te maybe you get a five team deal who knows but we’ve seen that kind of be how the Pelicans operate a little bit so I think that’s something that’s really worth keeping an eye on as we go forward kind of on Brandon Ingram trade watch and what it could end up being here and the other side of it is and we’ll talk about this later in the week or even next week that you know maybe they just keep Brandon Ingram you know I don’t think they’re just like we’re going to trade him for nothing you know I do think there is a contract number that they will feel very comfortable with we’ll try and project out what that is and there’s reasons to to keep him you know one of the things that I really thought when you listen to him in his end of season media availability was he knew he wasn’t good enough this year like he really truly knew he wasn’t good enough this year and that he needed to be better and maybe needs to change you know the three-pointers came up a lot said he needed a point guard but then you look at the film and you’re like no you’re you’re stepping into a lot of these long twos if he does you know that introspection over the offseason over the summer here I think that’s when maybe he realizes what he needs to do to be better and then can fit I’m like the longest defender of Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson can fit together I I did that show once a year twice a year for years because brand inam can do that he just needs to change the shot profile and kind of get bought into being a member of this team and not necessarily the number one guy there will be moments when it is that but if he Embraces that role this is a very talented scorer who’s giving you more on defense than he ever has before and for a guy to do that later in his career to really commit on that side of the ball that says a lot in a very positive way about brandan Ingram and probably doesn’t get talked about enough he’s also a very good facilitator to the team he can pass we’ve just got to tweak some things to make him fit around Zion who at this point is the franchise Cornerstone that’s what you need and you need more shooting and Zion’s not going to just become a very good three-point shooter or on volume right the thing is you know when when Brandon Ingram fans and I don’t like to kind of get into that stuff particularly on the show here you know people are like why don’t you ask Zion to shoot threes why is it why is it BR Ingram one of them is proven he can shoot threes and the other hasn’t one of them has done it on volume and decided to stop doing that and that was a conscious Choice by him and his play style that’s why that’s why when you look at their careers brand Ingram has a year year his first year in New Orleans where he shot 39% on 6.2 attempts per game it was 3.8 attempts per game last season he can take more threes simple as that Zion in his career right this year was his he he’s averaged half a three-point attempt per game he’s not going to miraculously become a good three-point shooter maximize players skill sets he’s also a 34% shooter from three like including kind of an outlier year of his rookie year if you take after that the three other years he’s played what is his three-point percentage 32.4% we don’t need that guy taking more threes maybe a little bit of a pull-up mid-range jump for sure but not more threes Ingram’s got to do but you can keep him if the trade market doesn’t develop and he’s willing to kind of make those changes and I think there’s potential for that too so we’ll look at you know what would it look like if brand Ingram stays here in New Orleans both on an extension and not on an extension to I think that’s important that’s something we’ll look at later in the week here unlocked on Pelicans so coming up next enough of trade talk for a minute the Pelicans did have a big loss and this is a big loss make no mistake about that assistant coach Fred Vincent leaving heading to the Detroit Pistons time to panic is that is that like how big of a loss what’s that going to impact what’s that mean for the team I’ll make sense of that for you coming up here next in today’s episode of lock on Pelicans today’s episode of lockdown Pelicans is brought to you by priz picks leaving the New Orleans Pelicans going to be an assistant coach on money Williams staff over with the Detroit Pistons a bad team this guy is actually very important to this franchise and I’m not going to sugarco it this is to me is a big loss big loss but not one that can’t be overcome not an irreparable loss not like whatever it is right there’s no irreparable damage to the team done by him leaving it hurts though he’s of the best shot doctors in the league and as an assistant coach who’s been here through multiple regimes starting with Monty Williams and been here for 13 years helping multiple players learn to shoot significantly better that is a important thing you know when you look at a coaching staff you know try and ask yourself this what is the ultimate goal of a coaching staff of a coach of of assistant coaches and all of that it’s it’s to grow your players to put them in position to succeed to maximize the players a shooting coach does that a guy who’s going to help a player shoot is maximizing that player it’s going to make him better grow him and is only going to help your game plan and everything with that losing that guy is definitely something that very much can hurt you so Fred Vincent is going to be gone this year right he fixed Lonzo Ball’s shot Lonzo ball was an awful shooter coming to the New Orleans Pelicans in the trade for Anthony Davis horrible if you remember the year before was traded to New Orleans they played the Lakers and they just dared him to shoot he took like 15 threes and I think made three of them was just an awful shooting game and the Pelicans defensive game plan in that game against the Lakers was let Lonzo shoot because we’ll leave him wide open for three he’s going to take those he’s going to miss them he was horrific shooting his first year in La he shot 30.5% from three his second year 33% immediately first season in New Orleans 37 a half% second season in New Orleans 37.8% Chicago until the injuries have kind of like derailed his career 42.3% after leaving La and working with Fred Vincent his career turned around look at the improvement from herb Jones over the years as he’s worked on his three-point shot it’s been incredible right you don’t need me to tell you this again but herb has gone from 33.7 to 33.5 so a little bit of a dip there but to last year 41.8 on more volume than he’s ever taken more attempts per game than he’s ever taken Anthony Davis is a very good jump shooting big man who do you think he worked with to develop that mid-range jumper that he had the three-point shot that he had in the bubble that basically led the Lakers to a title that’s Fred Vincent’s work even if that player isn’t here anymore but Anthony Davis was one of the better shooting bigs in the league working with a guy like Fred Vincent these things truly matter Brandon Ingram became a good three-point shooter and you know at times a reliable three-point shooter here now because Ingram doesn’t take them is not a reflection on Fred Vincent the three-point percentage being so good is a reflection on Fred Vincent Ingram the year before he came to New Orleans 33% from three first year in New Orleans 39% it’s a significant difference there his three seasons in La he shot 30 33% from three in Five Seasons so far in New Orleans he shot 37% Fred Vincent doing the work losing him hurts there’s just no getting around that now he’s taking getting more money a better job title you know he he’s wanted to advance his career but he’s been a little bit stuck here in New Orleans so leaving probably makes a lot of sense for that I think he’s been here a lot of time because of his family and now maybe it’s just the right time in his life to make that move and we wish him nothing but the best it’s done a great job here in New Orleans developing guys and I think that’s been a really important thing but it’s it’s also not something that’s necessarily going to like cause this team to collapse or you know again nothing is IR is causing irreparable damage to the team they can shoot well you know they they’ve learned from that guy and there’s other people that know how to teach players how to shoot too Vincent just happened to be one of the better of them I agree with that so that’s why it’s a loss but ultimately this team success is is based off of a couple of things first and foremost being Zion Williamson he’s still here the role players that we like that we think are going to be really good herb Trey Murphy all here even if they bring Brandon Ingram back CJ stays in his same role this team won 49 games last season now if you don’t improve in the west you’re likely going to regress and get a little bit worse but there’s still a talented team here and there’s no tail spin or anything that’s happening this is just natural shakeups and if anything as I’ve said when we talked about James bgo potentially leaving and other people potentially leaving if you can come to New Orleans do some good work and then go on and get a head coaching job Advance your career other people want to come here that is the sign of a very healthy organization that is doing very good things so this does still reflect well on New Orleans even if it hurts even if it’s a loss but then you go and you try and identify the next great shooting coach you bring him in and you put him in that role same for the front office and they’re you know making some changes there with all of that that’s what you do and I think that’s what you’ll end up seeing New Orleans do what ultimately determines the success of this team’s health and Zion Williamson and how they are maximizing him right the the culture was not built by Fred Vincent it was built by everybody here right like those are the things that are worth keeping in mind this off season which is there’s more changes to it than we’ve seen in the past everyone kind of panicked too when Teresa Witherspoon was basically fired let go right it was fine it was totally fine right she was close to his eye on what’s it going to be meant nothing it’s a business they understand that you know same with Fred Vincent same with the people in the front office leaving it’s good for people to go get promoted get other jobs that’s what we want to see like root for others success there’s not enough people in the world doing that let’s end there that’s a great positive note to end today’s episode of lockdown Pelicans on I appreciate you all so much we’ll get into some more draft talk the Pelicans don’t have a second round pick but I want to look at a couple of second round prospects that I do like if they end up with a second round pick in a trade let’s say who should they be targeting who should they be looking at even for undrafted potential guys too that’s something they’ll look to do because they’ve had a lot of success with two-way contracts so they’ll likely look to grab a guy and put him on that let’s look at some candidates for those type of things because the draft is going to be here before we know it so that’s going to do it for this episode of lockdown Pelicans part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day as always I’m your host Jake Madison Nola Jake on Twitter and I’ll be back with y’all tomorrow

While we wait to figure out where the New Orleans Pelicans will trade Brandon Ingram, Jake Madison says it will be more complicated than you think. Jake takes a look at the trades David Griffin has made for the Pels to see if we can get any insight. It could be a three team deal involving teams that haven’t come up in trade rumors so far like the Chicago Bulls and Zach Lavine or the Golden State Warriors and Chris Paul. Plus, how big of a deal is Fred Vinson leaving to go to the Detroit Pistons?

  1. I hope he does get traded. When he’s the focal point of the offense he’s proven he can make the right plays. When he’s playing second fiddle to Zion or CJ he struggles.

  2. Three team trade NYK receives MIKAL BRIDGES and Jose Alvarado

NOP receives Mitchell Robinson, Bogan and 2 1st rd picks from NYK

BKN receives BRANDON INGRAM and 2 1st picks from NYK

  3. It’s a slow drip of talented people not a wave. We can’t keep losing great talent like Taylor Jenkins and think it going to be ok

  4. It's funny to see this getting walked back. BI played well with Zion and they were +13 together. BI also played well with CJ and they were plus +13. It's more likely BI was never seriously on the block. Like they were entertaining offers to see if something awesome came along but weren't desperate.

  5. Anyone that would ask why Zion isn’t taking the threes doesn’t understand basketball. I can assume they are not an everydayer.

  6. Hm idk. Can’t be a sign of a healthy organization if people see others leaving.
If it does attract any talent it’s from them seeing this as a rotating door organization which sucks.

  7. Building a team around Zion (By doing things like trading Bi) is not likely to make the Pels a better team until and unless Zion himself develops a reliable Mid-range and 3-point shot and as a defender. Trying to just put "shooters " around him will likely be fool's gold … as even the best shooters are unreliable … and ZIon; 's game is predictable for defenses ( way more predictable than BI) …even Lebron struggled for years until he either developed a better jumper … and joined other superstars on teams … until ZIon majorly improves as a player all of this trade talk will just amount to much ado about nothing. and as seen in this year's playoffs .. the teams that made it the farthest were the teams with good mid-range shooters

  8. Losing Fred is going to be felt but I think he has left his mark on the team. I really do think that BI was negatively affected by the USA team play. He needs to get out his own head. They were giving him the 3 shot at times.
