Jayson Tatum on if he doesn’t win FMVP: “Isiah Thomas didn’t win FMVP every time. Tim Duncan didn’t win FMVP every time. Larry Bird. Steph Curry only has 1. Kobe won 2 out of 5 championships…I wouldn’t be the slightest bit sad that I didn’t win FMVP. I would be ecstatic just to win the Finals.”

That’s a fair comment! Finals MVP doesn’t mean too much in the grand scheme of things if you’re a multi-year contender.

  2. aligreaper19

it’s only recently that fmvp was considered a really major reward, it was just seen as a feather in the cap back in the day

  3. ColdCocking

The truth is that you just have a way better chance of winning a championship if more than one player is in contention for FMVP

  4. StopGlazingMe

The Celtics are set up so well that if you told me that Tatum and Brown both retire with FMVPs I wouldn’t even blink an eye. Their best players are 26/27 and locked up for the next 5 years. That team will be contending for a long time

  5. RareCreamer

Say you care without saying you care.

He went straight to comparisons to help validate himself instead of just saying “I don’t care, I just wamt to win the championship”.

Where did this obsession with Finals mvp start?

Like in 1985, where people telling Magic his ring didn’t “count” because Kareem was the finals mvp? What about Kareem in 80 when Magic won the award?

  7. WolverineLong1430

As long as he wasn’t a bum during the finals, I don’t put that much weight in FMVP. People act like FMVP means everyone else was trash and was carried. Tatum was just as important as Brown and played very good. Brown just played better.

  8. Acework23

you do need atleast one though if you wanna be that caliber of a player so i guess you gotta win another title?

  9. __I_AM_HUMAN__

Well it’s going to Jaylen Brown right now, unless Tatum does something magical in game 5.

  10. MiserablePiccolo287

Difference being those guys won more than 1 chip and did win FMVP in other occasions.

For Tatum that is not a given

  11. JOE_raccoon

    C O P I N G

We’re gonna get a footage of Horford consoling a crying Tatum walking back to the locker room

  12. > when I left Shaq, you said I was selfish. But now that I’m retired, y’all don’t even count the 3 I won with him. What would y’all be saying if I didn’t win the 2 with Pau?

    – Kobe Bryant

  13. FMVP only matters that much if you’re in the GOAT convo tbh … it’s a distinguishing counting metric. If you’re just a great or solid star player , it’s whatever.

    For the Jordan’s, LeBron’s etc it’ll matter

  14. KnickedUp

Tatum knowing all those historic stats tells you how important the award is

  15. 693275001

Haters will find a way to slander him for this btw

  16. Benvenuto_Cellini_

Its been on his mind clearly lol. Good attitude to have though.

  17. blacksoxing

What are “we” talking about here? Dude is trying to win his first CHAMPIONSHIP. Who cares about the finals MVP?

If it was say his 3rd then yea, may matter just to start trying to “rank” him alongside other greats. Right now though he gotta focus on getting his first as trust me….if the Mavs pull this one out Luka/Kyrie are going to get ALL the shine, and Tatum/Brown will be treated like the biggest busts of all time (undeservingly in the greater scheme)

It’s a great response and he’s right. Even though it might seem weird to some people that Iggy won Finals MVP that first Golden State title I don’t think most reasonable people discredited Steph. We saw how that first Finals went with Iggy and LeBron. I don’t think reasonable people discredited Kobe. It’s about the journey getting to the Finals as well.

Now with that said reasonable people aren’t on TV 20+ hours a week spouting off shit takes. And if Brown wins you just know the Tatum slander is going to be out there. It’s like some people have this weird agenda against the guy when I’ve personally never seen a reason to dislike Tatum. If he wins a ring he accomplished the ultimate goal and that’s all that matters, fuck anyone who tries to discredit that.

Plus he’s young. He’ll have more opportunities. This isn’t a fluke run.

Also if Jaylen wins, it’s not like it’s going to a guy Jayson fuckin hates. They’re friends and teammates who’ve been thru wars.

  20. GiveMeSomeIhedigbo

Side tangent about Isiah Thomas—I think he might have been slightly overrated because since he was the best player on two title-winning teams, people look at him with the more modern player vs player lens as him “carrying” the team when it was more of a group effort. In the years where they went to the Finals (1988-1990), he was not in the MVP discussion, and did not make All-NBA. To be completely fair, there were only two All-NBA teams until the 1988-89 season. He never won MVP, and I was surprised that he never really came close (5th in 1984 and that’s it).

  21. ChucoTeacher

The way people move the goalposts and just can’t celebrate a person’s success (which hasn’t even happened yet).

  22. Jameszhang73

Man, they are trying so hard to evoke a response from him. It must be frustrating knowing he’s a step ahead of them every time. They are just making him more likeable.

  23. CravingKoreanFood

It’s gonna be funny if he Chuck’s up like 40 shots today

  24. MrGrieves88

He hasn’t even won the championship lol, this is a dumb video

  25. chloroform42

LOSER MINDSET FIRE THIS BUM!!!! Man the media obsession with whether Tatum or Brown is better, whether either is a superstar, what tier they’re in, who fucking cares, they’re great and the team is phenomenal overall

  26. ExpectedOutcome2

It’s still a damn shame the voters gave Steph’s FMPV to Iguodala.

  27. ExtremeGamingFetish

I mean that’s what JT and JB have been saying all season. They just want to win

  28. TreyMcnally

Doesn’t care about finals mvp but then lists five other players that haven’t won fmvp..

  29. Texas12thMan

If he doesn’t win it, he’s definitely texting Kobe to air his grievances.

  30. Overall_Implement326

Yeah, I don’t believe that at all.

  31. JesusSinfulHands

For the first championship, usually everyone on the team is on the same page in terms of doing what it takes to win. It’s the 2nd time around that the disease of more comes creeping in.

  32. socialistbcrumb

I’m a Jayson Tatum fan. He’s my favorite player. But more than that I’m a Celtics fan, and I truly do believe he knows which proper noun on his jersey is the important one. I mean are people really rooting for a FMVP over just a championship for their team? He can’t hit the broad side of a barn right now which sucks, but as long as he’s contributing overall to us winning I don’t care if he has the best series.
