Lakers interviewing JJ Redick this weekend, Would this be a good hire? | NBA | FIRST THINGS FIRST

check in on the Lakers head coaching search which is now entering its seventh week and has yielded two candidates uh the good news is that now the Lakers are interviewing JJ reck who used to play basketball and also does a podcast recently with LeBron James this after they were publicly scorned by Danny Hurley Brew will’ll start with you do you think this would be a good hire at this point just hire somebody I mean a warm body is a good hire at this point what what is taking so long you can’t listen you can’t hire him right now or else we don’t get heard about ethical scoring in the NBA Finals broadcast this is this is look the they should hire he’s not even a candidate Mark Jackson after him go get Sam Cass I was gonna say what about Sam C they’re not gonna get Sam but of the guys that are been have been named I would go get Cass hold can I ask you a question real quick on that and then you finish it was like oh they can’t get Cassel cuz he’s right you got to wait for the finals to be over for Sam Cassell cuz he’s coaching it evid they got to wait for the finals to be over for JJ anyway so I don’t know why casselle wouldn’t be involved no they they should of the guys that are being named it should be casselle he was a leader as a player he he was respected as a player he’s respected now he’s a great communicator paid his dudes yeah he’s 15 years as an assistant with some top coaches all right so he should be the one but now I mean look JJ is just a complete unknown he might be be great he might be horrible you know we don’t know how he’s going to respond In the Heat of the Moment In terms of making substitutions and things like that adjustments things like that we know he knows the game okay we don’t know how is he G to really coach LeBron hard and be able will LeBron let him Coach him hard because if and how will the players react will the players think this is just LeBron’s guy or LeBron’s really is coaching team does LeBron want a coach like remember this is similar like like Steve Nash Steve Nash I think is a decent comp he I don’t know if he has the strong personality as a stronger personality as reck but he had the co-sign of his Stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving all right and it and you would have think I mean Nash was obviously a very smart player so he knew the game knew the X’s and O’s and it obviously didn’t work work I say does LeBron want a coach because remember Kyrie was like you know we we we really don’t need a coach we can just get out there and do our thing and I and LeBron obviously is very smart about the game so is he going to let JJ Reddit coach him that’s a real question because they apparently are friends and so that can be a challenge so look maybe it’ll work maybe it won’t you can’t tell me it’s a great hire or a horrible hire at this point cuz it’s a complete unknown so I I think I do know that LeBron wants a coach because Danny Hurley told Colin two hours ago that LeBron texted him during this process that once it came out that Danny Hurley was a candidate that he was texting with LeBron and talking with LeBron and see and Hurley talked about how excited he would have been to coach LeBron which is almost and Hurley also then said in a earlier interview on levitar show essentially yeah it was about money like there would have been a dollar amount to get me to coach the Lakers that’s also lowkey just before you go like LeBron’s back to the Lakers well right or no I didn’t listen so here’s the thing I think so Dan Dan was careful in what he said to Colin he said if you know that LeBron told me if he was there but I I do think it is more than a lowkey of had they signed Danny Hurley LeBron back to the Lakers now I don’t know now now because the other thing is this James burgo is on that list James burgo might get hired by the Cavs here shortly like they are they are going to end up potentially whether they want to admit this or not with their second or third or fourth choice even though they are the Los Angeles Lakers and I just I I have a really hard time being convinced that the Lakers think this would be a good hire because they publicly went after someone else I mean that’s that that is to me are you suggest they don’t think there’s a good hire CU if they don’t think it’s a good hire don’t hire him well yeah but I it’s not like people are CLA oh reck’s the next guy re but but like but we are we already have very influential members of the media pinning this potential hire on LeBron James and so I think one of the biggest Pros that JJ has in his colum from the Lakers perspective is if it doesn’t work usually GMS don’t get to fire for Co is but it’s not my fault LeBron had us do it and so I just I that’s just a horrible way to do business well there’s a lot of things it’s a horrible way to publicly recruit a guy and then lowball him in a way that all of us knew was lowballing him and then where that guy is comfortable going on the radio and TV a couple days later and being like yeah they didn’t offer enough money which I’m paraphrasing I don’t want to be unfair to Dan but he said very clearly of course there’s a dollar amount that would make me pick up and move my family of course there was fin dollar am what I don’t understand like I don’t think he wanted to go there and he even said that he had a deal with Yukon already he said he said his Yukon already and the numbers agreed to so why are you going LA because he thought they might offer him $100 million we agreed to this number with Yukon yeah yeah and then I think you can there’s buyouts I think you can go but the here’s the other part of it and this is where I want your take Wilds if if we were adding a fourth person to the show yeah and it’s like hey our number one pick I won’t say any names but is a retired Hall of Fame basketball player and then we don’t get him it’s like okay instead we are going to hire a guy that used to run an analytics Department in the NFL be like well that’s weird were you just trying to add someone or did you have a vision in mind so that so if your number one choice is seasoned grizzled hard ass college coach with this long development resume why is your number two Choice the young guy who’s never coached anything hey Coes his kids team no I’m not trying again I’m not trying to be rude but but the their resumes are not similar you understand what I’m saying like there’s not a decision tree there that makes sense to me I’ll expound on that cuz someone this is not an original thought I saw someone tweeted at me I was like all of mine are by the way that’s a good point that the Danny Hurley hire would be more like the Brad Stevens higher and when you come in it’s like hey I’m here to develop the young guys develop a culture but it’s also time to close the door on the old veterans that got us this Championship restart send everybody to Brooklyn get draft picks and build build start building with Tatum and brown and now it’s finally but they were going to try to do both but that does I don’t know if that works like if you’re gonna bring in D I think if you brought in Danny Hurley it’s it’s a bit of a rebuild and then try to go but you’re bringing in JJ you have to be an sbob team that’s not no it’s sbob expectations and first round Bob Talent like I said if they go out in the first or second round in the next two years which is likely JJ Rd could get foot back on the carousel right but it’s just I just want a continuity of decision like if the story after missing out on Danny Hurley was Jay Wright on his way to La for well his name was I know but it was but the L you know he has interview and if it was the leading candidates are James bgo Mark Jackson Sam Cassell I’m like okay I know Sam hasn’t been a head coach but a lot of experience whatever it is this doesn’t track know these are two diametrically opposed the only similarity between JJ reck and Dan Hurley is they have both been on JJ reck’s podcast okay I just don’t want to have you shoot yourself in the foot if we’re going down the podcast Lane of people who really love basketball analytics and love LeBron James you’re well that’s kind of what I’m saying that if you don’t land JJ I’m obviously in at least the same category so I also coach Junior High basketball by the way to a district Championship thingk oh yeah thanks for watching subscribe here to get more from the show and to check out clips from other shows on FS1

  1. I know Handy wants the head coach position. To me it would make more sense to give him the head coach position and give JJ assistant coach.

  2. Reddick is all talk. And lebron would be the real head coach during games. James just want a scape goat when they don’t win. I can’t believe the lakers are gonna would actually extend his contract. Lakers are not gonna win with lebron as the best or second best player in the next couple years. Create a deep roster now by developing current young talents and wait for a younger franchise player in free agency.

  3. Because they wanted to hire him all along… they just needed a fake candidate to change the narrative to make it seem like they were going to hire someone else…

  4. They should hire me. Ill sit back and let lebron coach the team. Ill take the blame after a year or 2.

  5. I think JJ will be a good coach. Nick's being a hater because they don't like each other but it isn't like some crazy risk to take

  6. Thats why nick thinks he knows more than actual coaches and GM's? becuase he coached a jr high team once? lol it all makes sense now

  7. Nick this CJ over Lamar nonsense has to stop! 😂😂. Cj last game was against Lamar. He threw for 175 yards. 0 TD. Lamar Threw for 152 and 2Tds. He ALSO ran for 100yards and scored 2 rushing touchdowns! Case closed.

  8. I know this isn't going to be a popular thing to say but at this point of his career Lebron needs to be and should have been treated like WHAT HE IS WHICH IS AN EMPLOYEE. But because that was never established the Lakers have the problem they have NOW.

  9. I don't think the Lakers wanted Dan Hurley anyway 🤔. They're doing this to hire Reddick for Lebron! They're a silhouette of their former selves.

  10. i pray redick gets the job and they never win a game. he is a woke dirt bag that fits LA perfect. larry bird comments were terrible. keep drawing up plays with lebron. lebron will tell you what to do soon.

  11. No, terrible hire. You fired Ham cause he didn't have enough experience to make necessary adjustments, so in response to that you hire someone even more inexperienced? The Lakers front office are morons.

  12. "They are going to end up with their 2nd or 3rd or 4th choice, even tho they are the Los Angeles Lakers…"

Um.. I think that is "because" they are the Los Angeles Lakers, not "even tho"… 😉

  13. All the coaches at the NBA level can to is teach the players the X’s and O’s of what offense and defense they want run and then try to convince the players to buy in. There’s no real teaching or coaching involved. If the players respect the coach they’ll do it, if they don’t respect the coach they won’t listen to a darn thing he has to say. J.J. Redick already thinks he knows more about basketball than anyone who has ever played. Just wait until he gets the nerve to start yelling at players. It’s not going to end well.

  14. Players don't always make good coaches, even if they're great. The mentality is different, and takes a toll on you that you may not handle.

  15. nobody wants to coach lebron he has a documented history of hogging all the credit if it works but if it doesn't he gets coaches fired…..he even tried it with spoelstra but didn't work

  16. Nobody wants to deal with LeBron. Just make him the head coach and move on. If he doesn't want the position, trade him. What's the worst that can happen? He retires because he doesn't want to play for another team? Ok. LeBron is more trouble than he's worth. Let him be someone else's headache.

  17. the draft being next Wednesday makes me think they are going with jj. you cant have a coaching vacancy heading into the draft
