By Prez

The Sales Pitch: The pitch for Ryan Dunn is bigger Herb Jones. He’s one of the greatest, most versatile defenders we’ve seen in the NCAA for some time, akin to OG Anunoby. He has the size to rack up stocks like a center, the explosive athleticism to cover whole swaths of the court as a help defender, and the agility to defend ball handlers. Even if his offense is a mess upon entering the NBA, all you have to do is turn him into a capable spot-up shooter and cutter to make this pick a hit.

Questions about their projection: You can’t be a zero on offense and get minutes on the Knicks right now, full stop. So picking Dunn would be a bet that you could develop his offense and offensive confidence from nonexistent to pro-level in practice and in Westchester, and there aren’t many examples of that kind of bet actually working.

Important Stats:

  • 8/7/1/1.3/2.3 on 55/20/53 splits
  • 9.6 offensive rebound percentage (OREB%), very high for a wing
  • 5.5 average dBPM over two NCAA years. Completely insane numbers
  • 2.8 steal percentage (STL%), 10.5 block percentage (BLK%) averaged over two NCAA years. Insane numbers
  • 1.36 points per possession (PPP) on cuts, his most frequent play type
  • 21% on C&S jumpers, a horribawful number
  • 67% at the rim

He’s a project for sure being so raw in offense but worth spending our #38 SRP, stash him in GL to fix his shot.

  2. Dragon-Bender

I really wouldn’t want to burn a 1st on him but think our second would be a good spot for him.

I don’t think that shot ever becomes respectable. But he is an all class defender

His height was measured at 6’6.25″ at the combine

If we pick him, i’m confident this FO sees something more than a taller version of Frankie Smokes. And if we do get him at #38, there would be no need to live through some “developmental” shit like that again. No 1st round pick pressure.

Deuce is a prime example of building up his offense and offensive confidence if you look at his shooting numbers his 1st 2 years to just this season alone . Granted Deuce can do more off the dribble but if Dunn can develop his 3pt shooting alone that should be enough to get him on the floor.

I think he is worth taking at 24 or 25 depending on how the board falls. We are in a great position where guys can sit and develop without the pressure of having to perform Day 1.

It’d be cool to get him if we don’t plan on playing him for 2+ years

Like others have said. A 2nd Rounder here is fine. That offense is bad. Not really really. Definitely looks NBA level almost. As long as there’s no MKG level shit.

  8. The one we’ve been waiting for!!

I see in comments below he is shorter than advertised at 6’6″? If he is truly 6’9″ we can use that length especially if Precious signs elsewhere.

However as we know, he would need some serious development offensively. Not the worst problem to have, but looking at the defensive #s, that shit don’t grow on trees and it could add to our already top tier defense.

Do we really need offense out of him?

Insanely versatile aggressive defense, rebounding and athleticism (transition dunks) ..I’m good with that off the bench for a dude picked 24 or later…and crazy affordable.

News flash…. History says we’re not finding any efficient starting players who can score at this point in the draft.

  10. I dont think he is ever going to develop a league average jump shot which makes him a no for me. Even with his defense, the Knicks dont have a floor spacing center so what lineup do we ever play Dunn in that doesnt have major issues on offense. I have a posted a few times about him on here but I think we would be better off taking Harrison Ingram who can do similar things to Dunn though maybe not as good on D, he is still a good rebounder for his size and will likely be an average 3 point shooter.

Use our first on Tyler Smith, then use our 2nd rounder on Ryan Dunn
