The Real Reason Mikal Bridges Isn’t On The Knicks: Inside The 2018 NBA Draft

you know when we look at that 2018 draft we spoke about Mitchell Robinson and the diamond of the of the ru that he has become for this for this organization and the Elder Statesman uh now in the lottery things things didn’t go out as as well um you know the Knicks did select Kevin Knox there I thought maau Bridges was the guy that uh that the team would have went for you had other players like you know Michael Porter or or Shay gilis Alexander how did you reflect back on on that uh on that 2018 draft is there anything you would have done differently well you know it’s it’s easy to say that now if you want to look at what guys have gone on to do at different situations you never know what they would have done coming in to New York it’s at that particular time in their lives you know obviously sh gild just Alexander’s become you know he’s one of the favorites for MVP this year he’s been a terrific player but no you know our process you know was sound I the unfortunate thing for us and for Kevin at that time there was so much change going on and what we knew with Kevin was that he was not going to be a guy that was necessarily immediately going to pay dividends because he was so young but thought that maybe he could grow with the group over time but then as you know there was a lot of change that he he had to he had three coaches in three years so I don’t care who you are as a a player especially as a young player that’s going to be difficult and uh you know he he he was a POS you know he was a talented young man coming out of Kentucky he was a position uh of need at the time we thought you know at that small you know three four position kind of where the league was going and it didn’t work and one thing I know and I’m comfortable with and and if you can find this person you find him for me but there hasn’t been a GM I don’t care whether it’s basketball football baseball wherever that hasn’t made a draft pick a trade or something that didn’t work out and I think the important thing in all of that is not to you know wallowing in it oh it didn’t work out versus saying okay how do we recover because look we’re all human they’re going to be some mistakes that are made but it’s how you recover it’s how you acknowledge and raise your hand okay that didn’t work so let’s pivot to fix it and make it work and so that’s ultimately what you go ahead and do and I think the what was uh and we’ve talked about this what was a bonus in 2018 even though we drafted him in the second round Mitchell Robinson was viewed as a lottery type Talent so he worked you know go figure he end up working out and he still a star center of the Knicks today whereas Kevin Knox who was the the lottery pick now has not been able to really gain footing around the league so I never look back uh I mean yeah you you know you learn I’m I’m a person that beli you know I learn from every situation in life but I don’t look back I don’t have you know regrets you can’t live life in regret man because if you start living life you know I should have done this should have done that I mean think about all of us in life how many times could we be saying that and you never get anywhere you have to move forward

  1. Props to Scott for not taking the easy route and just saying “Mills wanted Knox, Mills was the President of the team, so that’s why we drafted him.”

  2. So much BS coming out that man’s mouth. Robinson was not a lottery talent, and Knox was just a total waste. Ntilikina was a total waste. The talent evaluators that have overseeing the draft over the last 10 years has been utterly abysmal! McBride, Robinson and Sims is all we have to show for our draft success🙄 pathetic.

  3. Who cares about bridges. If we redo that draft the target is SGA. And I don’t want to hear anything about revisionist history either bc I said back in 2018 that we needed a point guard, I didn’t see superstar but I did see a 15 and 8 type of guy

  4. The 2018 Knicks organization would have traded Mikal Bridges for Nikola Mirotic and a bag of oranges. I don't hear anything from a guy who spent his last days sitting in a corner waiting for his retirement and NBA pension to kick in. Long live Leon Rose.

  5. I never liked Knox coming outta College, Just a clumsy athlete w/ a terrible motor. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but it was a handful of prospects I would’ve rather taken over Knox, Fumbling on him & Ntilikina back to back really hurt the rebuild for awhile.

  6. I remember that draft being sure we were going to get one of MPJ, Mikal, or Miles Bridges. Knox took me by surprise.

  7. They get a lot of credit for Brunson and all the free agent and trades that make up this team. But it’s draft after draft full of mistakes, and especially at position of needs. Brunson was the diamond, and everyone gets to keep their job….but if wasn’t for him, everyone should be fired for so many missed great players.

  8. Never pick a guy with low motor. Even if they look good in tryouts. NEVER ! Even watching him in Summer League I wasn’t impressed. Too right hand dependent then and still the damn same now……Now when I saw Jayson Tatum 😩😩😩😩😩and this was when division still mattered. Knew he was gon torch us for the next 10 calendars lol We was doing old Knick maneuvering by swinging for the fences

  9. I'm surprised (or maybe not) he doesn't mention Calipari's influence of the Knox pick. Remember, the Knicks are all about anybody with Kentucky ties back then.

  10. Need yo take a lesson from the Boston Celtics. They drafted Smart, he panned out to be a starter and a decent player. They Drafted Brown he became a a starter and a great player. They drafted Tatum and he became a great player. However they traded Smart and other good players to get the players they needed to get where they are today. This is what the Knicks need to but don’t want to holding on to players they feel will fill Madison Square Garden because they are from New York or played in the area. This is why the 1972 Knicks will be the last team to win a championship.😑

  11. I got the impression at the time that Perry wanted Knox for his upside/athleticism. At the time, I thought Michael Porter Jr should have been the selection because mock drafts had him near the top for a long time. Knox was probably second on my list because Calipari kept hyping him up as a future star.

Imagine if the Knicks knocked it out of the park by selecting Jokic, Mitchell and Shai or Mikal in consecutive drafts. Instead we got Cleanthony Early, Frank and Knox.
