The Charlotte Hornets can start negotiating with Miles Bridges. Is a deal imminent?

the NBA season is officially over the Celtics win the championship Charles Lee new Hornets head coach does as well now that means teams can officially negotiate with free agents they’re wasting no time we’ll discuss all of that today on lockdown hornets and this do you guarantee victory for the Celtics after last night’s win I think they’re going to pull it out you are locked on Hornets your me on WFNZ every weekday from 12:00 to 3 pm and there’s Doug Branson DJ Doug Branson every Hornets boox score.com that’s where you can catch his substack there he is that’s how you turntable it right there ones and twos baby a few tables I’ve table turns turns tables a couple of times strong strong reaction to the intro Doug people loved it getting lots of Fire emojis lots of likes you got to feel good but honestly kudos to you man I know you worked hard on it it’s a weird thing to do because that intro is so beloved previously so it’s a big leap but we had to do it you did a great job and the people love it DG well it’s time to move into a new future a brighter future for this podcast and hopefully for the Charlotte Hornets that’s right does that future include miles Bridges that’s the question oh man we got to start there I just said brighter fugure we got to start there all right I I follow the bullet points I I am a a follower I am not a leader so the first bullet point here with the nice little cute bumblebee Emoji Hornets miles ahead now I don’t know what that means as far as whether they’re miles ahead of every other team in the East trying to contend or if they’re just miles ahead on this negotiation with Miles Bridges but part of the weird rules now as soon as the season ends Doug teams can start negotiating with their free agents with their specific free agents which means that the Hornets can start negotiating with Miles bridges for a couple of days and then I believe that’s when everybody else has the ability of course we know tampering goes on but whatever right the Hornets can start negotiating so what does this mean for the Hornets could we expect some kind of announcement within the next couple of days I wouldn’t expect so I would expect miles to play the field here what do you think with this news with this weird timeline and how it is supposed to serve as an Advantage for teams that want to hold on to their players that are about to enter free agency yeah so you and I have heard the range for Miles being somewhere in the 20 to $25 million per year you know range okay so if the Hornets were able to get a deal done with Miles I would expect it to be north of 25 million I would expect the the Hornets to say all right we are going to do whatever it takes we don’t want to let those other teams have that opportunity in order to do that I think they it’s all it’s all about money it’s not about location it’s not about you know playing with lamelo it’s all about money it was all about money when they were negotiating prior to this season when uh you know his agency and Miles decided to take the qualifying offer instead of taking whatever short-term deal the Hornets were offering so if it if you hear a miles announcement I would be shocked if that number were not north of $25 million yeah yeah or or maybe even just right at 255 and Miles thought okay this is expected the high end and I’ll just go ahead and take it but you’re probably right if they got something done it means miles would be comfortable not testing free agency which means he got at the minimum of the high end if you will or he just got something crazier than we all expected so yeah that’s what I think if they did if we did see the tweet it would be the Hornets just giving in which would mean that Miles was a part of the plan all along I don’t think that’s going to happen though and you can give your prediction here too but Bobby marks joined us on Wes and Walker last week and had I think a couple of good comments on the miles Bridges situation he’s actually going to release a piece on Miles and some other key free agents this offseason so I would expect that to drop within the next couple of days too maybe it already has and I just haven’t seen it but he talked about the kind of contract that he would offer to Miles he said four years 100 million so 25 annually that’s something he would be comfortable offering to Miles Bridges but the stipulation would be that the first year would be guaranteed and then the rest of the contract would be Kevin Porter Jr style to where if you got in trouble again then you would forfeit all of that money and by the way that style for Houston really worked out for the rockets that was shrewd negotiating on their part especially because you’re taking a chance on a talented player that could possibly help you win games but you just don’t know what’s going to happen off of the court and so once he got in trouble again the Rockets were off the hook for like 60 million something like that and that’s what Bobby said he would do he also discussed how he doesn’t think any of these other teams in the NBA there’s like five that have cap space Philadelphia Orlando Oklahoma City dug like some contending teams to where if if you’re Philadelphia and you go for miles instead of a Paul George or the typical darl Mory type star it’s GNA feel underwhelming for Philadelphia and for a team desperate to make Joel embiid happy and that guy to get Philadelphia over the hump right Orlando I’m not so sure that he fits with Orlando where they do Pride themselves on defense I just don’t know if he is the initiator as much as you would want him to be with that style like I I don’t think that Miles has a ton of Leverage here unless there’s another team that’s so desperate Detroit being one I could see being desperate in just saying come back home here’s 2728 year but other than that Doug I I actually think like with the mile stuff Hornets might be in a a pretty decent spot do you see it the same way well they could do what they did with PJ last season again it was different different front off as Mitch cup but he waited until you know the the very I mean he really let that play out he let PJ test the market and the market said n we’re good you know does the market say that to miles Bridges or like you said does you know a Detroit or or another team with C now the Contender thing I don’t think he gets 25 even though they have space I don’t know that he gets that 25 million I think it’s for him it’s probably a choice of do I maximize my dollar amount or do I go somewhere where I can contend that’ll all be about priorities for miles but I don’t see him getting $25 million in Philadelphia or some of these other maybe but I I just I don’t see that happening I think it would you know he would have a better chance I think of getting the $25 million with Charlotte for Charlotte what they have to think about is you know do do you lock yourself in at $25 million a year for Miles Bridges because at that point that signals to me if they did that that they really believe that the lamelo Brandon Miller uh miles Bridges and Mark Williams core is going to grow into something that can take them into you know Eastern Conference contention because if you don’t go after miles it will mean in the short term immediately that you will most likely get worse because not only do you have to replace his scoring but you also traded away Terry Rosier Gordon Hayward who had major contributions PJ Washington to your team as well you know you you brought some things back in the trade deadline but you’ve got to work on on you know filling that and I’m not sure they can do that this off season so in the short term it makes you worse but in the long term it gives you flexibility to construct a roster around lamelo ball and Brandon Miller that might be more complimentary than locking out 25 Mill in Miles Bridges so I think you know those are sort of where the two sides are and priorities and and we’re just going to have to see how all this plays out and then and then figure out you know who’s willing to dance with who let’s talk more about miles bridges on the other side of the break plus still to come here on lockdown Hornets don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet Charles Lee gets another championship ring and Doug there were some Hornets in attendance for that game we’ll discuss that plus a little more on Miles Bridges free agency on the other [Music] side before we do all that I want to tell you this episode is brought to you by FanDuel summertime means baseball the NBA Finals although sadly it’s over and plenty more you can bet it all on FanDuel and right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 200 bucks you can use to bet everything from the finals MVP to who’s going to hit one out of the park you can visit fanduel.com lockon and add a big win to your summer bucket list now we’re going to have to wait until after the summer but we plan on using FanDuel again for BET The Buzz I just hope that one it goes a lot better for us in the next season and we actually have some consistency via injuries I guess we had consistency it was just that everybody was injured all the time I’m hoping we know what we’re betting on going in to bet the key it is key that’s why we suck so bad but we’re going to try it again we’re going to go to FanDuel once we do FanDuel America’s number one sports book more lock down hornets ahead some of the mild stuff Doug you mentioned how in the short term you get worse because he leaves and he is one of the more talented free agents out there you you have some big stars you have some player options that we’re trying to figure out Paul George is an example of that and miles is clearly a tier even with age below some of those guys but he’s still really talented we know this already I I do wonder if there is a way where the Hornets don’t get worse they remain status quo if they don’t have miles on the roster or they may even get better because you are going to have $30 million in cap space to work with if you don’t bring miles back right th those are the two options miles comes back you have like five to work with and then extension and stuff like that mid-level exception whatever and then you’re talking about if miles leaves then you have 30 lots lots lots more so could you do the Moneyball thing where you don’t replace a miles with a single player but you go after just two different players that are a little better defensively a little more dependable but can’t really get their own shot don’t do some things as well as miles but play their role really specifically well you add some depth that that’s better than vasam meic and Trey man right but maybe not the starter like I could see a scenario where that happened I I don’t know like I I couldn’t picture a kyp coming here but somebody like that tus Jones I’ve thrown out a couple of times I I don’t know I I think that’s possible if that’s how they decided to play it and then of course you know you you still have some of the decisions to make with berans and some of the younger players on the roster well anything is possible because health is a big factor here like if this team is significantly more healthy next season without miles Bridges they’ll at least they’ll probably be better record-wise and and at least approach replacing some of what you would lose with Miles Bridges because you would have you know you would have more lamelo uh which is going to help with the scoring load uh for sure so yeah I mean I think that’s always that’s always a big factor and then you have to also uh take into account that you you’ve got a new coach coming in and and so everybody’s going to have to sort of Define somewhat new roles and you know figure figure that whole situation out too so a lot of variables when people ask you know well how do you replace 20 plus points per game for Miles Bridges I think you have to step back and ask yourself like why did he have those averages last season and a lot of that had to do with the fact that he was you know the the primary scorer uh along with Brandon Miller last season he’s not going to be that if uh they maintain Health next season so you know I I I’m with you uh I think well would say like when I say in the short term you’re going to be worse I just think in the short term it’s going to be more difficult to compete when you lose a talented piece like miles Bridges but I think it gives you more flexibility to construct a roster that that may be able to do a little bit more in the postseason as lamelo and Brandon Miller grow together similar to the way you know Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown have grown together as as allar is all NBA caliber Talent as lamelo and Brandon do that you want to have flexibility to make trades and to do free agency Acquisitions like Boston has to construct a roster around them that makes a lot more sense it’s more difficult to do that if you have another $25 million contract oh yeah yeah right right we we could just go to that too I mean think it’s so funny man that’s a lot of money for a player that we don’t expect to be a top two player on this squad for it team that isn’t going to contend for a playoff spot next year or top four spot right like I I guess it’s possible high-end scenario you could see them potentially competing for a six seed everything has to go right but man if you’re paying it it’s okay to have a player that makes a lot of money if they’re the third best player on a team that you expect to win a playoff series right like but 25 for a guy that is not going to be a top two player who is going to play for a team that isn’t expected to win a playoff series can can it just be that simple because honestly we’ve talked we’ve talked about it a lot around you know we we’ve done a lot right we’ve dissected this this is what you do for a daily Niche team oriented podcast discussing the NBA but it could be as simple as do you want to pay 2 million to a third best player on a squad that is not going to win a playoff series nope cool let’s move on and that’s how simple it might be for me Doug yeah pre Brandon Miller they were willing to do it and obviously pre fon domestic violence charges they were ready to do it now the th things have dramatically changed and had people stayed healthier over the past even really last season and the the team and you know schn and Plotkin had had a chance to really see what the the team could do uh under Steve Clifford and you know that then that scenario might even be a little bit different but all of that stuff didn’t happen and I think you’re right it might be that simple $25 million a year to a player that’s never been an All-Star and if things go completely right which is healthy lamelo for 70 games which is Brandon Miller continuing his Ascension and staying healthy miles isn’t going to make an All-Star Game you know what I’m saying the ball is not going to be in his hands enough for him to accumulate the statistics such that he would Garner All-Star attention it’s going to go to lamelo and Brandon and so you’re talking about paying $25 million a year to a player who’s never going to be an Allstar and is going to be the third best player on a team that hasn’t proven that they can get out of the play in he regressed last year too compared to the last time we saw him in terms of athleticism yeah yeah career averages people are going to go well points but yeah like watch the games man watch the games man we’ve been screaming that ever since we’ve been doing the podcast but right it’s it might just be that simple um you want to move on talk Charles Lee on the other side for sure let’s do it all right sounds good there’s the te’s coming up next on the lock on Hornets podcast don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet Charles Lee gets another ring he’s done this twice now got to be a good sign I hope and I’ve got a final finals take okay do you guarantee victory for the Celtics after last night’s win I think they’re going to pull it out I think it’s a good idea I I we’ll see find out what Doug’s prediction is for the finals between the Celtics and the Mavs coming up [Music] next this episode is brought to you by eBay he was one of the lead assistants under the Mike buen Holzer tree we’ve seen some of those guys get jobs elsewhere Darin ham was on that staff they all have the Hawks connections and then Charles Lee after they get rid of Mike buher in Milwaukee they go after Adrien Griffin that was a train wreck but Charles Lee actually leaves Milwaukee goes to Boston works with Joe Missoula is the lead assistant there is the first guy on the staff and sure enough he wins another ring I look you can only love it there’s no downside to winning another championship to me I know some people were like well I hope he just gets into the Spectrum Center a little earlier so he can start working with the players now man winning another championship being experienced going deeper and deeper into the postseason to me I don’t see it as any other thing as something positive and he is getting some quality time with the players Mark Williams Brandon Miller Grant Williams all in attendance for last night’s game Doug well it’s all about cred like he walks into the first meeting with the player and says I just won a championship with a team that almost every single player was a defensive Plus for this team so what do you think my focus is going to be and what do you think your focus should be this season it’s improving the defense I was looking at the numbers from dunks and threes where they have their estimated plus minus stat and for this the Boston Celtics they only had one two three players three players that were below average in terms of defensive estimated plus minus those three players were SP Mauk Su s oh I saw him he was he was in a weird camera angle last night where the first pan they have to the whole team celebrating SP is right in the middle and I thought about tweeting about it shout out to Su Fe and then you’ve got Luke cornette who is only a defensive minus when he’s not playing the Hornets then he’s you know when he Luke cornet turns into Luke cornet The Hornet killer when he plays Charlotte Hornets and then pton Pritchard is their worst defensive player according to defensive estimated plus minus but he’s a plus 2.1 offensively which is like 91st percentile so it’s sort of the lamelo factor like you can be a minus defensively but you better be plus plus plus plus is what uh Clifford would always say about James Harden like it’s okay for Harden to be bad defensively because he’s one of the best offensive players in the league now you go to the Hornets would you like to take a guess at how many Hornets last year were a uh were above average according to percentile in defensive estimated plus minus yeah how many I mean I would say did did we get to two did we get to two we got to you’re you’re exactly right we had two players now I won’t make you guess who they are but I’ll just let you laugh at who they are it’s Cody Martin at plus 2.5 97th percentile probably could have guessed that honestly like just from reputation probably would have been the guy you got that’s the easy one but he only played 28 games now this next guy played 63 games but didn’t play a whole lot of minutes he was 56 percentile in defensive plus minus and that’s JT Thor yeah everybody else either average Bryce mcgallen Trey Man Mark Williams were right there at the average Grant Williams was right there at the average Bridges was 45th percentile Amari Bailey 45th Seth Curry 44 and then everybody else was below 40th percentile in defense all the way down to Brandon Miller who was a minus 1.4 in the 20th percentile def defensively so this and by the way like those stats we I mean the Nerds will tell you rightfully so right that that number is is pretty good at evaluating All Things Considered because like the idea is that there’s no great stat to evaluate defense those are like pretty reputable stats as far as you know how good these guys are at D there all there are always going to be issues with defensive stats particularly defensive catch all stats but you cannot argue with the idea that there were only three players for Boston that were defensive minuses below average really and then the Hornets only have two that were above average and those two players were not significant factors in their rotation at least by games played or minutes played okay so I want to give you one more stat and then and then and which is this is really my NBA Finals take is that defense and finishing at The Rim those are two things that are good indicators of whether a team is going to compete in for a title or not and they were two things that Boston excelled at across the board and two things that the Hornets did not so you go to rim percentage and for the Celtics um they had only one two three four five players below average at finishing at The Rim OA prette brette Drew holiday Sam Hower Xavier Tillman Jaden Springer now Hower did all of his work from Beyond The Arc holiday 2 and gave you a lot on defense but everybody else above average for the Hornets they only had uh only four players five players excuse me were above average at finishing at The Rim Nick Richards Grant Williams uh povy so that’s two players they brought post trade deadline Mark Williams Miles Bridges and then Trey man was just below that so you know again another area where they have to clean it up they have to get better Brandon Miller lamelo bals what they’ve got to work on as well but they’ve got to bring in players if they’re not going to bring Bridges back they’ve got to bring in players who can finish at The Rim Doug I don’t know if you still have the page in front of you but I I would if you could check the frequency though because what’s interesting is I don’t think that Boston actually got to the rim as much I know Zack low preached about it really all season long he would say that he wants the offense for Boston to get there a little more in part because they are good but we know about the Missoula offense it was look for the open three and I do think they were good shots but man they shot a lot a lot from three this season that was the idea from their offense they bring in KP of course who is a stretch big and a better three-point shooter than Marcus Smart so that’s going to help you quite a bit and so you you have to wonder what I like about this is okay Charles Lee was a part of a team that when they got to the rim they finished really well but I don’t think they got there all that frequently like as far as top five top 10 whatever 26 in the league and frequency at getting to the rim they were fourth in the league at rim percentage so they didn’t get there a lot but when they did they crushed it right so that goes right into the point while you are trying to figure out how to incorporate that more into the offense the other side of that is shooting a lot of Threes which does serve to the advantage of Brandon Miller knockdown shooter and lamelo ball knockdown shooter so what I like is that you can have a foundation to chill on you have your identity we’re going to look for open shots we’re going to try to get lamelo and Brandon open with some of the other Shooters on the team whoever that may be and also still work and work and work at getting to the rim and maybe we see that percentage increase like part of this is just having Tatum having Jaylen Brown like having really good strong players and so it’s not like you can bring all that strength from all the guys that we’re talking about and apply it to the Hornets but maybe there are some tricks of the trade like I I go back to Charles Lee working with Grayson Allen right and Grayson working a lot more off of the ball off of screen scens getting to the rim more that was something he mentioned in some of the audio that we played I I do think that that’s a part of the teachings of Lee like I I’m excited about this Coach man I’m excited about the staffs it feels like we’re getting this guy on the rise it feels like we’re getting someone that has been very respected when he’s as hot as ever right you you can’t get a leite you can’t get somebody as hot as Charles Lee the guy lead assistant on a championship team has been in interviews before I’m allowing myself to get excited and to be heard again Doug well and if if Lee can’t get some Buy in defensively uh you know from lamelo ball and others then I don’t know who can and and I don’t know how lamelo ball could have watched this finals with with how Dallas struggled to defend with their top players and and walk away from that and go I’m I’m good being the the level of defensive player that I am again I I I don’t think anyone expects lamelo ball to be Elite defensive player with how big he is for their offense but there has to be some improvement because that’s that’s what Boston showed Boston showed that you have to have defensive Buy in across the board and but you can do it you can build you can build a team around two players that you drafted and and then use every available tool trades and free agency to help build a roster and that’s what Boston did from you know Drew holiday to Al Horford and then you make some Savvy picks you know to to fill in the rest of your sort of role player roster KP the trade that brought or I think that was a trade acquisition so you know again I I hope that I I know that Jeff Peterson at least I know it in my heart I I can’t know for sure I have no evidence I gotta think that Jeff Peterson looks at this and goes I can make an impact in every single one of these areas to transform this team and transform this offense and transform this defense into something that’s a little bit more balanced and a little bit more competitive well Doug I actually the better example might be Dallas because there’s no perfect example but with Boston it’s okay go get Elite Defenders all across the board and Derek white and Drew holiday and then KP was a good rim protector that can shoot oh and have it all start with the most the the richest player in NBA history and then Jason Tatum who’s going to get the the second biggest contract right or he’s going to get the next big contract with Dallas you have an offensive Centric player who’s ridiculous on that end of the floor in Luca lamelo is not in Luca’s level but that mold ridiculous offensive player not good defensively that’s lamelo and what did Dallas do surrounding him you had some up and down years you get to the Western Conference Finals you don’t even reach the playoffs because you decide to tank but with that draft pick you select a really good defensive Young Center and drik Lively and then at the trade deadline you go out and you get players who weren’t all stars but you picked them off of teams that were toward WS the bottom and PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford both of those guys had excellent excellent moments in the postseason and then you just had your two stars and Kyrie and lamelo in the back court really help but what do they win with vastly improved defense Doug their defense improved a ton and they don’t have all of the elite style Defenders that Boston does so maybe even Dallas is the example okay Charles we don’t have the Defenders right but Dallas gets so much better on that end with the nice organizer and Sean Sweeney we’ve talked about before maybe that’s the the mold you look at yeah yeah you might be right I wonder if that PJ Washington guy is getable I wonder if they could I wonder if they could they could get that gu no no I look I think there are there are a number of different ways to to to get there and look if you’re telling me that they’re Dallas um I’m going to tell you well that’s not enough to win a championship but guess what it’s enough to win playoff series we’ll take it I would take look they got punked Dallas got punked in that finals I would take that I would take give me the Hornets getting punked every year for the next five years in the NBA finals I’m absolutely taking it and I’m going to enjoy the ride no the the point stands Charles Lee champion built off of Defense can that message get through to this team and you’re right I think you put it well if it if it can’t from him if he can’t get through then it’s big time blow up like for the Hornets because at that point you just got to reset everything and find new players that will defend and open your eyes and open your ears because now Charles Lee uh is Unleashed from Boston now he gets to join Charlotte and talk about what he expects from this team what he wants to build I hope he cleans up that lean years comment that he made to Mark Spears what does that mean I mean we didn’t talk about that in the miles Bridges segment but if they have talked about lean years coming up I can’t how how does how do you how do you sort of make that work with giving $25 million a year miles Bridges I don’t know yeah uh but but maybe he cleans that comment up we’ll see I I can’t wait I cannot wait to hear more from Charles Lee about what this team is and I hope it means to Walker that this organization as a whole from Jeff Peterson all the way up to schlotkin that they can start talking about the vision what I have been pining for and I’ve speculated that hey maybe they’re waiting on Charles Lee to join and they’ve got their whole crew together and now we can start to sort of get aign and talk about what that is but you know I think the the fans deserve to know what the bleep is going on and what the vision is for this team Beyond sustainable success like I’m tired of hearing about sustainable success I want to hear about what the actual plan is for moving this team into playoff contention yeah should get a an an announcement on the Charles Lee introductory press conference at some point maybe today maybe uh perhaps in I would imagine the next two and we’ll keep you updated on that of course we’ll be there to cover it also stay tuned for like just this NBA draft announcement you know just just to I don’t know just for not necessarily lock on Hornets but perhaps we can go hang out and see who the Hornets are going to usher in with the sixth overall selection got some stuff working with WFNZ so that’d be cool if the locked on crowd could go out there just yeah yeah just just keep your ears open as Doug said that’ll do it for lockdown Hornets thanks for 1. why go through all this trouble to not resign Miles.

  2. Never miss a game. Miles "athleticism went down" due to an outdated system run by Clifford, and no Melo to toss him allies.
