Bobby Marks’ Dallas Mavericks Offseason Guide 👀 What’s next after NBA Finals loss? | NBA on ESPN

all right a happy Tuesday welcome to the off seon uh teams can begin negotiating with free agents on their own roster extensions I do not expect a flurry of deals to happen I think teams are smarter and agents are smarter to put stuff out right away uh but we’re going to do a video on the Dallas Mavericks there is plenty of offseason content on espn.com Dallas is team 29 um their article came out on Monday night we’ve got an offseason draft guide and free agency guide we’ve got um salary projections we’ve got spending tiers um we’ve got everything you need to to know about coming in we’re going to keep on putting out material as far as what we want out there so for Dallas um certainly a team uh I think that um exceeded expectations this year um you come off the lottery last year you basically turn over your roster uh from that 2022 team that got to the Conference Finals that wasn’t good enough um I thought this team was good enough to win a championship I picked them to win they did not Boston proved to be the better team um when you have um you know event at the end of the day your stars got to come to play right that’s the reality is that your stars your stars got to be stars and for Dallas consistently to have both guys play play at a high level just wasn’t there so we are going to talk about the Mavericks off season pretty an interesting um offseason because basically the same roster returns um your two free aens are Derek Jones and um markei Morris and the Jones situation is going to be the most intriguing um Derek Jones has been your ultimate journeyman um Chicago Portland U Miami Phoenix list goes on uh he signs a one-year minimum contract last year took less money came out and said that um based off that option year um for the veteran minimum exception he outplays his contract and now here comes the danger of trying to retain a player like Derek Jones uh you have non-bird rights um where um where Dallas is right now financially uh let’s pull up the Mavericks financially we put it on the on the um we put it on the um on the slide you are right over the luxury tax threshold we will pull that up for you guys okay so you’ve got 13 players under contract remember your draft pick goes to New York which is picked 24 I believe you right now you have 174.000 million doll in salary luxury tax is at 171 you have three players on non-guaranteed contracts Dante exom AJ Lawson Jaden Hardy um remember if if a guy like AJ um AJ Lawson is cut you got to replace him there maybe it’s you get maybe a little bit more savings there so you’re at you’re over the luxury tax okay you’ve got Kyrie Irving bonuses that count towards the apron million dollars so you’re $3.6 million below the first apron you still have flexibility below the second 14.4 so why does this matter regarding Derek Jones as far as where he is from a priority standpoint the most you have to offer in free agency to Derek Jones is 5.2 million that’s the most Derek Jones in his career has made $28 million I wrote about him in the article that came out on Monday 10 free agents the salaries that I would like to pay that I would pay them I put uh Derek Jones in the Bruce Brown category as the contracted keep an eye on remember last year Bruce signs for what two for 45’s got a team option it’s one of these It’s JJ reddic was the first guy to basically come in with these balloon payments um as far as what we uh what we’ve seen um I would not be surprised if a team came in and certainly there’s a domino effect here what will happen in free agency you know Paul George basically controls free agency um there’ll be a domino effect here where um based on what has who has money team’s got to spend 90% of of salary here um by the first day of the regular season will Derek Jones be that guy that a team comes in and offers like two for 46 $23 million team option on the second year if that happens then I think the basically Dallas is where Denver was and they will lose him they will have the $5.2 million Taxman level exception um what I go out and move money so basically you’re asking to move the Hardaway junr or the Cleber contract to be able to free up your $12.9 million um non- tax mid-level exception that’s a tough decision that takes away some of your depth I think you can use Hardaway junr in in another trade because of what you have draft pickwise and despite owing Brooklyn at first and um Charlotte at first and there’s some swaps there Dallas still has their 2025 first and they have a 2031 first that they can go out and make a deal and add to their salary here um there is no extension for Luca this offseason Luca is onee short of the seven years of service criteria he is extension eligible next offseason to sign the biggest contract in NBA history which is 5 years $346 million that will not start until 26 27 so your roster returns okay the continuity Factor returns you have Luca Kyrie and two more years got a player option um for next year I was asked this morning on radio would you sell high on Kyrie probably I’m not I’m not selling high on Kyrie I I think he I think he proved his worth I remember everyone last year got crazy when Kyrie signed for 3 for 120 then they basically said Dallas was out bidding themsel out bidding against some I’d be careful there I think listen you have Hardaway is on an expiring I think you can move him and try to maybe upgrade with your draft picks at 25 and 31 you’ve got uh I wouldn’t do anything with PJ Gafford he got two years 28 million Josh Green Cleber two years uh Lively definitely not I mean we haven’t talked about omx Prosper I I’m intrigued by him this off season because I think he can come in and be that big Wing he could be your Derek Jun Jo Jones J possibly replacement and then you have some decisions with exom Lawson at Hardy I would expect all three contracts to be guaranteed um I would expect Dallas to be a tax team which is fine um there’s no harm being a tax team um I would expect um I mean I think Jane Hardy is intriguing from an extension candidate I mean his minutes went woo it’s like a roller coaster there he’s extension eligible once his contract is guaranteed here um the hard part is you know Dallas is in a western conference Denver’s going to be there again um Minnesota’s going to be there again I mean you could say this team could lose in the first round you could say this team can reach the NBA Finals here um but I do think their their window to compete at a high level I think they found the right identity and I think Jason kid did a terrific job this uh this year uh he’s continually getting better he’s got a really good staff I think Nico Harrison is a really really good general manager I think sometimes when you come when you’re not cut in that NBA cloth where like you didn’t grind your teeth and worked your way up the food chain and you you know you know certainly Nico has a that Nike experience and you have you just have a different perspective on the league um it just kind of opens up your eyes to a lot of different things than maybe your what your kind of what your thought process is um they’ve got a really good front office there certainly Matt ricardi worked for me um back in the back in the day in in New Jersey and Brooklyn he’s really Michael Finley is another person Andrew Baker really really good um front office here and they’ve shown the ability to turn it over if they had to they’re not stuck like being stuck is not a good place to be they can turn over a couple of these pieces because they’ve shown the ability to go out and do that um you know certainly with draft picks they’ve basically taken three first round picks and turned it into Kyrie Gafford and PJ Washington instead of taking three first round picks and turn it into one player it’s turned into three different players here um and they should be applauded and I think that’s why if you’re a Maverick fan there’s a belief there that the team will get better because your front office is constantly looking at to make this roster better um so that’s it for Dallas I think it’s a terrific year certainly not how you want it to end Derek Jones Jr keep an eye on that um what you do with your draft Equity you’ve got the 58th pick in the draft that’s probably going to be a two-way guy um that um you know that’s going to be the the big thing there as far as where where the Mavericks are so have a great day day we will talk soon um draft in a week [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. as long as Luka's a defensive liability that can't play off ball it doesn't matter what they do

  2. Trade for a guy like Jerami Grant and sign a shooter like Gary Trent Jr. Get rid of THJ, Kleber and maybe a pick to get Grant

  3. We should get rid of tim hardaway dwight powell & maxi kleber for a consistent 3&D player & start playing omax next season to see what he can give us & ofcourse luka have to at least put in more effort on defense

  4. First thing is Luka needs to lose some weight and get back to his bubble shape.

I want to see them trying to implement a different offense and get the ball moving a bit more. That style of play may work against certain matchups but they won’t win a championship like that.

  5. PJ and Lively gotta skill up(learn post moves) Luka can get in shape and get another shot creator

Too reliant on Luka & Kyrie to penetrate

  6. I can't really see them getting to the Finals again anytime soon. The West is so tough, it's really a toss-up, a lot of different teams can make it, whereas in the East there's only like 3-4 real contenders. The team that gets hot at the right moment usually goes, & Mavs got hot at the right time this year. They need to get rid of dead weight like Hardaway, Kleber, & go grab some defensive wings like the Wolves got. People are crapping on Luka as a defensive liability, but imo he was great throughout the entire playoffs up until the Finals. I felt like the Celtics were just too good that it became demoralizing, so it felt like he sort of just gave up defensively. Did people forget how he shut down every Clippers star in the 1st round? They all shot poorly when guarded by Luka. And Luka got a lot of defensive stops in the 2nd round & WCF as well, he was always in the passing lanes. He needs to go back to playmaking too, felt like in the Finals he was trying to do it himself, reverted back to too much iso ball & forcing bad shots. The Celtics were just a bad matchup for the Mavs, I think the Wolves & Nuggets would've done better.

  7. Mavs are just a few pieces away. The main thing they need is a two-way wing who can create his own shot. Mavs have decent 3&D guys (djj, pj, & kleber) who can catch and shoot, but not a guy who can create offense other than Luka and kyrie. But Luka and kyrie won’t have it going all the time, so they really need another guy who can create and play good defense. It doesn’t necessarily need to be another star tho. I’m thinking about a guy like jerami grant, Kelly oubre, or a Gary Trent jr. Players like those would take the Mavs to the next level imo.

  8. i think mavs should pursue Paul George probably becoz he has no ring, PG joining the mavs will give him a chance to win a ring
