How can Luka Doncic & the Mavs build off their run? + Bronny James to the Lakers? 👀 | NBA Today

the Mavericks they fell short in their pursuit of a second Championship but had a memorable run as the fifth seed in the Western Conference in the second season with Luca and Kyrie Dallas finished the season 16-4 in their final 20 games that’s the best record in the NBA from March 7th to the end of the regular season and they were optimistic about their future despite the loss take a listen it doesn’t matter if I was hurt uh how much was I hurt uh I was out there uh tried to play uh but I didn’t do enough I’m proud of any of every every guy that step on the floor all the coaches all the people behind uh obviously we didn’t win finals but uh we did have a hell of a season and I’m proud of every one of them I enjoyed this journey more than any other season uh just because of the Redemption Arc and and being able to learn as much as I did uh about myself and my teammates and the organization and the people that I’m around it’s a lot of good people here so uh it makes coming to work a lot of fun and uh when you have that type of environment I think uh you know it’s easy to achieve goals that are bigger than yourself cuz everyone’s really dialed in and having a good sense of Joy about them that’s really great perspective there from Kyrie the Mavericks of course fell short but Luca I mean he still became the first player to lead an entire postseason in points in rebounds assists and steals in NBA history so across gamees three to five of course he missed like 20 straight threes and I think that maybe colors a little bit the way that we remember this finals run from him it was actually a very impressive postseason so Brian can you just put all of this in perspective as you look back at the totality of his first Finals what can he build off of yeah I’ve got good news and bad news the good news is Luca his his flaws are all correctable what is holding him back I honestly believe that he can overcome I think he’s been trying to overcome some of them for most of his adult life but I do believe he can he can get over it and I do think that when he does do it cuz I firmly believe he’s got the talent to be where Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown were like last night it’s going to be all the sweeter because he went through this um the the bad news is I I just think that the Mavericks missed an opportunity to make this series more competitive um and there’s a couple different reasons for that but I’ll always wonder what would happen in game three if he didn’t fell out and how that would have affected the series sorry Wendy you’re always supposed to start with the bad news and the good come on you threw me off you thre me off but look when I think about the Mavs they may not be at a championship level just yet but they’re in the second best position considering that they have the privilege based off of what they’ve earned in the postseason to just tweak all they have to do is make tweaks to their roster it’s not like you’re finding something completely new you have you found a core after the trade deadline where you mentioned they had finished the regular season 16 and four they found a really good core they found a really good strategy those dunks those threes the one-on-one isolations they have most of the recipe for Success now you just have to fine-tune the those little itty bitty ingredients I’m with you but let me say this they the math season was a success Seas like they should not be hanging their heads no one in the organization should they had a successful season now what that being said Luca when you pointing at him he got to stay he got to get in better shape sustain it throughout the longevity of the Season get that part of it the second part of it is the Player Development part you got a guy like Phil handy that’s out there who is a master at Player Development you get guys like Derek Lively back into the lab expand his game where he could knock down jumpers he showed us one three-point shot that heame four and then you get PJ Washington in the lab Luca get comes back in better shape and then you have these pieces around them right do you want to keep them or do you eye guets maybe this grto over there in Golden state right in Klay Thompson because you could ass shoot wait I don’t know if director Kathy can get perk and ey up is it the Joel and bead a little bit but it’s really I’m looking at the camera you know what I mean go after clay go after clay already he already started he didn’t already started his social media post you what did you say follow unfollow weren’t you the one who talked about how you know yeah this a little different this hit a little different I’m not mad at it but I’m not mad at it because what they need they need a space and and when you talk about a tough Western Conference sure that it’s only getting tougher that’s going to get better you know Denver going to correct them uh do some things to add to their personel you got to get stronger I think though when we start and finish this conversation uh and looking at the rest of the the West here some of the people some of the teams that we could be seeing next season up at the very top who want to get their get their get back on Luca donic it certainly starts with him but Kyrie Irving Brian back in the NBA finals for the first time since he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers and I asked him if he ever doubted he’d be back on that stage and he said no it wasn’t really doubt but he had to go through some things to get back here what do you make of his performance in these fin he used the the phrase Redemption Arc last night and that is actually what we saw in this season but he fell just a little bit short of completing it because he just didn’t bring it in Boston and I really wonder what would happened and certainly the Celtics were the best team of course they earned their way there but if the Mavericks were playing Milwaukee or they were playing Philly they beat any other team I just think Kyrie person they beat no no but they beat not even so much beating them how would if Kyrie have played even if they were playing Cleveland I think Kyrie goes to Cleveland and no problem but something about Boston he didn’t quite get over and it affected the three I really do believe effected the dud gam but that’s when your leader needed a leader like think about it he’s been the leader of that team everybody’s been leaning on Kyrie’s shoulder because he’s been there before but in that moment when you in a hostile environment you actually need somebody to come and put their arm around you and Kyrie didn’t have that because they don’t have that’s where that re witha and his grow poti they have when jayen Brown and uh and J it’s kind of the one two punch there that they didn’t have but they are in a really good place and they’re set to bring back most of their rotation here just wait till starts hitting all those three so you know we stay ready so we don’t got to get ready but I wasn’t prepared for another Countdown the finals are already behind us but the NBA calendar Waits for No One we’re only eight days away from the start of the NBA draft the Atlanta Hawks they are on the clock so here’s a look at the latest mock draft from our very own Jonathan gavone Zachary ret is the first pick to the Hawks followed by Alex SAR at two to the Wizards the Spurs taking a pair of point guards at 4 and8 as you can see here and look who is here in the building with us here in New York City it’s the one and only Jonathan Gabon it’s the Jonathan time of year everybody so as we look at the draft especially at the top what is the biggest question mark that you have what are the Atlanta Hawks going to do at number one okay they have they’re working out ret tomorrow that’s the first time any NBA team will get a look at him live in their building they’ve worked out Donovan kingan and they loved what they saw there Quinn Snyder put him through a detailed film session he shot the three ball really well uh he had a great interview he showed some real ability out of short rolls and so they have a tough decision there at one and and and the question is do they slide back possibly to four the San Antonio SP Spurs own their pick next year it’s unprotected can you get the bo of Both Worlds slide down to four uh maybe get Donovan Kling and or Reza Shay get your pick back and you know really allow yourself to possibly go into this rebuilding process by trading Trey young down the road they have a big decision there to make yeah so I think Victor wanyama has an expectation that the Spurs are going to improve quickly and like the question they have to weigh obviously this is another French Prospect is paying that kind of price for a player who’s not viewed as a franchise player you’re talking about re I mean number one pick you’re hoping for a guy a franchise player like wanyama this draft just isn’t as deep paying that kind of price for a player who may not be a franchise player who may at his best be what Jonathan a your third or fourth best player I think weighing that is one of the things that the Spurs have to to judge you know going into this process yeah because this draft certainly isn’t being build necessarily as chalk full of Camp Miss fa of the franchise type talents of course one of the other big questions in this draft is where is bronny James going to go you have a new mock draft out this week week where do you have him slated I don’t think it to surprise anybody that we have him 55th to the Lakers this has been I mean that’s a big deal this is the way that it’s been trending for years now NBA teams that I talked to say they cannot get bronnie James into their building teams that are drafting in the late 20s and the 30s the Phoenix Suns have a second workout scheduled with bronnie later this week but other than that we have not seen any NBA team be able to work him out the sense among teams is that his agent Rich Paul you know does not want him on a two-way contract and the the range that he’s going to be picked you know that 40 to to 58 range those are where two-way contracts are handed out so it’s looking right now like bronnie James is going to slide there to 55 I don’t think any NBA team wants to you know pick him and deal with the repercussions of that so that’s the way it’s trending as of today the way they’re they’re the way Rich Paul is acting is the way the player acts when he’s got a draft promise am I right in saying that and so you’d say well why who would have a draft promise well it does doesn’t take much deduction where somebody would promise Brony James it would be at the pick the Lakers have in the second round well I want to go back to the Victor wom yamad the Spurs they got to make a move they got to do something cuz I haven’t been around him but listening to him in his postgame interviews and when he addressed the media he seemed like a player that wants to win now he’s not okay with losing and I understand a lot of players have to go through the process and things of that nature and The Growing Pains but he’s ready to win now I think he has made when I think he has made the Spurs I candy I candy attractive place any discr All Stars you may have out there they probably want to go play with this man right now but the first picks enough in this market to get an elite player but but they could use the stuff that they would trade for the number one pick they could use elsewhere right for other players the question is whether Rish or whoever whoever they go Jonathan thinks re is a possibility there there’s also veteran free agent like a Chris Paul for example who can help bridge the gap you draft a couple of guards you bring in somebody like Chris Paul to Mentor that player and help you get you a little bit more competitive I don’t know that they have to make the playoffs next year but they want to get better I want to follow up as a question because if you look at the Spurs this season outside of Victor webing Yama and a couple of other players they have a lot of needs what would you say is number one on their priority especially going into the draft back court they need guards and they need shooting they need you know they can’t every time Victor Ren banama puts the down the entire defense collapses on him they were the worst shooting team in the NBA last year they need to add shooting and they need to add more playmaking around him I love when Jonathan gavone comes to set because we always learn so much keeping an eye now on Trey young what the Atlanta Hawks are going to do at number one and what repercussions is exactly what repercussions that has for the rest of the NBA Victor wanyama Building there and bronny James
