The Latest on Donovan Mitchell Contract Extension Talks With the Cavaliers – Sports4CLE, 6/18/24

question is Donovan Mitchell uh will he sign the extension uh we’re not sure yet take a look at this Donovan Mitchell recently posted this um on his Instagram it’s him hugging Jared Allen on the court uh down at looks like it’s rocket mortgage Fieldhouse but Donovan Mitchell Post in that um let’s welcome in Chris Fedor Cavs beat reporter for the plan dealer cleveland.com so the Cavs could begin contract talks with their players Donovan Mitchell um when the final concluded last night the NBA Finals have you heard anything relative to that extension yet Chris no nothing on that front Dave um I don’t think it’s going to be a complicated process um it’s not a situation similar to the one that the Knicks are going to deal with with OG anobi um when it comes to anobi right there’s a little bit of a debate about how much to pay him in a long-term extension um and you’re trying to figure out what is his financial value when it comes to Donovan Mitchell it’s pretty straightforward the Cavs are going to make an offer of four years around $200 million and it’s all about um to me is there going to be an opt out in the fourth year is there going to be um different parameters within the contract that Donovan is comfortable with that the Cavs are comfortable with is it going to be three years is it going to be four years those kinds of things um that’s that’s to me what the Cavs have to work out with Donovan it’s not how much is he going to make in this contract because he is one of the best players in the NBA he’s eligible for a certain kind of contract and there’s nobody in the NBA that would give him anything other than that contract and it it sounds more and more like he’s going to take that contract is is from everything we’re hearing is that accurate enough yeah that’s the sense that I get and and look Donovan has been saying to everybody that was willing to listen um that he is happy in Cleveland that this is a place where he believes he can win and I do believe that the Cavs making the move to go away from JB vicker staff has increased the likelihood of Donovan signing long term um I also understand that for Donovan um this is an opportunity for him to get some Financial Security this is an opportunity for him to get the kind of contract that he has earned and if he feels like down the road that the organization is not making steps in the right direction they’re not giving him an opportunity to play in the Conference Finals in the NBA finals which is ultimately what he wants out of his career then he could always request a trade he could always try and get out of that contract so even if he does sign long term this off season with the Cavs it doesn’t mean that that’s where he’s going to finish his career or he’s going to play out the the contract that he signs this is a players League Dave it has been a players league for a number of years um they have the power and during this era you see guys request trades after signing one extension all the time um so I I think Donovan understands that there are a lot of different factors in play when it comes to this extension and there are a lot of benefits for him being here in Cleveland he’s been involved in this coaching search he’s going to be involved when it comes to the roster decision- making that the Cavs um are going to to to go down the road of this off season all of those things are going to appeal to a player and if he goes somewhere else other than Cleveland is he going to get those same things I don’t know it’s fair to wonder about that so it does feel like this is just a matter of what is the contract going to look like for Donovan how many years is there going to be a player option but it does feel like this is the place where where he wants to be in where he believes um is a good basketball related situation the thing is you know anytime that that you’re a player and you turn down a contract extension there is an opportunity for the organization to just trade you um and the minute if that were to happen the minute that Donovan allows that to happen he loses some of his power he loses some of his leverage and he loses the ability to basically pick his basketball situation and there is a real chance that if he would turn down a long-term contract extension the Cavs would trade him into a situation that isn’t as good as this one that he has right now in Cleveland a team that came off um in Eastern Conference semi-finals appearance and a team that actually Beat Boston in one of the games

Dave Bacon and Chris Fedor discuss the latest on a potential contract extension for Donovan Mitchell with the Cavaliers.
