What We’re Hearing on Darius Garland Trade Rumors – Sports4CLE, 6/18/24

so we’ve also heard the reports uh that if Mitchell signs long-term extension Darius Garland in his representation um would ask for a trade do you do you believe that is that is that legitimate or what are you hearing relative to that I do believe that that is real um but just because a player or a player’s Camp wants a player out doesn’t mean that the Cavs have to um actually go through with that they could sit there and they could say hey sorry we’re not going to get the kind of value in return for Darius that makes sense for us to go that direction I totally understand why you may want that to happen but it doesn’t make sense for us to do that I’ve also gotten the sense in talking to a lot of people um inside the organization and outside the organization that Darius wasn’t thrilled with that getting out there and it’s not necessarily coming from Darius it’s coming from people around Darius and I totally understand where they’re coming from Dave like Darius was the guy who was the face of this franchise before Donovan Mitchell got here he was the guy who was trying to get his own signature shoe from New Balance before Donovan got here he was the guy who the offense ran through before Donovan got here he was the guy who got the biggest contract in franchise history before Donovan got here with Donovan here he doesn’t have those same opportunities with Donovan here he’s not going to be looked at the same kind of way and his people are always going to look at what’s best for Darius what’s going to allow him to make the most money what’s going to make him most marketable what’s going to boost his resume what’s going to give him an opportunity to win all those different factors many of them have disappeared now that Donovan is here now that Donovan is the alpha um obviously this is an opportunity for Darius to win he’s been to back-to-back playoffs but his people are looking at a situation saying well I could go somewhere else still have an opportunity to win and get those other opportunities off the court that matter when it comes to negotiating another contract down the road because that’s how agents and representatives are supposed to operate they’re supposed to think that far in advance um but the other thing that comes into play here is like I said the value that the Cavs would get back in return for Derk um and if it’s not something that is going to enhance their chances of taking another step forward as an organization um Darius is under contract they gave him a big contract they rewarded him handsomely um and it’s his responsibility as a player to play out that contract for as long as he’s here
