The Jazz should pick …? Leif’s Pipe Dream Pick to Reality Pick
we’re drawing nearer to the draft so I’ll give my favorite players that I think the Jazz can get at 10 at different positions on the basketball court and why I prefer them coming up next on locked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello and welcome in locked on Jazz I’m leaf tulen and I’m excited and honored question is I haven’t written out the question but basically which of the players that I give the pitch for is your favorite for the Jazz to take and make it a realistic one because I’m going to give you some players that I think are pipe dreams so probably abstain from the the pipe dreams all right today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now with new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s $200 in bonus Bets with any $5 bet so visit fanduel.com locked on to get started all right in the first segment I’ll explain who I think is available at 10 and touch on those at the top of the wish list that I said maybe pipe dreams in the second segment I’ll tell you who my favorite Wings who I believe would be available are and how I would rate them in terms of preference and I’ll also not only tell you who they are but I’ll break down their games a little bit for you and then in the final segment I’ll go through the guards I like and how it’s possible to draft them because some of them are really talented but there’s a possibility in which they slip all right let’s Dive Right In so the top guy I covered for the jazz is Stefon castle and he would be only available uh available in trades like you’d have to trade up to three for every day or that listen uh I I talked about a a trade in which the Jazz would trade up to three uh for Walker Kesler and 10 for number three and he would be the guy would take and I’d only make that trade if he is there so so much so he’s the type I would only trade up if he’s there at three and not already taken like I would want to make that trade on draft night even though that’s not always possible I believe in his upside more than I do the top end of reash who’s assumed to go one or two I like Castle more than SAR I like him more than kinging as well I think Castle’s safe but boast the upside as well as uh opposed to Ree I I think he doesn’t have potential in Reas and I think Castle does have potential Reas is a StraightLine driver who’s not particularly quick shoots pretty well but not sensationally well as an adequate athlete Alexander SAR does not wow me I think there are guys in front of our eyes who are good but you contextualize versions of what we kind of almost want SAR to be and those are like I don’t think he’s close to chat holgren and chat holgren is not an actual star he’s more of a star in his role and he could be an All-Star but Chad’s not the star on his team jiren Jackson Jr’s been an All-Star I think that’s still a rich comparison for SAR and he’s not the athlete that Jonathan Isaac is so maybe MO is the closest MO is a 16 and eight guy through three years who I thought was a better Prospect coming in and might be better at the five than he is the four and people were saying maybe SAR wants to be a four so that’s interesting clinging to me maxes out at Roy Hibbert none of those guys move the needle as much as Castle does so he’s the pipe dream Castle to me has the developmental pieces in order to be someone who can score inside and out play top end defense and I I’ve even had a friend recently say he he sees him as a shay gild just Alexander and he doesn’t say it’s necessarily a oneto one but it’s basically that Shay gild just Alexander wasn’t forced to be the man right away but had time to develop his Arsenal Be an Effective player while youthful in his career with the Clippers and early on with the with the Thunder and then he just take this step because he was not forced to do so and he had all these traits he’s kind of got a Herky jerky game and he gets to spots without incredible athleticism got an okay shot coming out of Kentucky it’s turned into an excellent shot and then there’s just these traits that you see in players and who are really good Defenders know how to play with and without the ball and I’m not saying I 100% agree but I I see the pathway to stardom being possible for Castle in a draft that I don’t think the pathway for stardom is all that possible for so many now some people ask me because I’ve been outspoken about Rob Dillingham and Reed Shepard who stock appear to be trending in opposite directions I I see re Rob Dillingham as a top or second option who scores with ease and creates for others as well but is terrible on defense and he’s he’s hunted for it but when asked about allar potential the upside of being a poor man’s Trey young or maybe close to a Darius Garland in this class you probably sign up for it and or maybe an extreme would be like Isaiah Thomas I saw someone on Twitter said that Isaiah Thomas roll as a score in a good team which is built very well but that team has limitations if Isaiah Thomas is one of your top players uh dillingham’s falling but I wanted to say that he’s a number one or a two option and that’s why I say I say he’s the better Prospect he’s falling so it’s possible that the Jazz could get him but I don’t think the Jazz take him because the Jazz are putting forth a concerted effort to get bigger and more versatile and he limits versatility despite that ability to score basketball that is very rare now then there’s a lot of jazz fans maybe a faction of which really like uh Reed Shepard Reed Shepard and and Rob Dillingham are often spoken about in the same breath but seems more Jazz fans like Shepard than Dillingham I think Shepard has a chance to be on a championship team more than Rob Dillingham but but there’s a huge butt in this be I only see that because I see him as a rotation player Allah scaled up version of pton Pritchard Pritchard was an All-American as a senior uh Reed Shepard was a really good player as a freshman he’s younger but you don’t take a pton Pritchard maybe even if he’s a younger version maybe a little scaled up and pitard to me was more of a natural point guard than Dy than Shephard anyway you don’t take it that high over the talent that I foresee from Dillingham as a score who can give you 18 to 20 right away whereas I think Shepard’s maybe a fifth man or a sixth man on a team what I mean by Fifth man is a fifth starter so but you guys get my point he’s the fifth or sixth best player on a championship team that’s more likely than re than Rob Dillingham winning a championship as the option one or two now let’s get to some other players that I think are a little bit dreamy but not insane tjon Salam I believe he’ll be gone by eight which is the San Antonio Spurs pick he’s French maybe that’s the title wanyama but I also think he could be gone before that uh Salon I I think is very very very good he’s got all these tools and and you’re looking for tools and attributes that will help you win in the longterm none of these guys are going to turn the franchise around immediately even the best player in this class likely won’t have this Transcendent effect that you could see like when Bama for instance was unbelievable did not win very much like the San Antonio Spurs were bad partially because I think they were trying to be bad and so even when wanyama was lifting them to new heights uh they still weren’t winning but I just want to preface that that there was a they were bad and they did have a generational talent I don’t see a generational Talent so none of these guys are moving it so maybe you don’t go for tools and attributes more than you do immediate production then there’s Cody Williams my hunch is he’s taken before number 10 my that’s just my hunch even though in a lot of drafts maybe some boards he’s not quite there I just don’t think teams are going to pass up on a 68 playmaking Wing whose brother is a a blooming star in the NBA but those are those are two of my favorites probably my two favorites as we speak right now that I think are likely to be around where the Jazz pick and maybe best case scenario so I’ll break down their games and how they could fall to the jazz or who else is there if they do not but first let me on the free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day all right so welcome back to locked on Jazz I just read through a lot of names in the previous segment about who I think’s available I I talked about the deficiencies of some of the top guys I talked about a few players that could fall and then I talked I got to the meat and potatoes of of the Wings everyone on the on Jazz Twitter knows that the Jazz want wings that’s probably because uh a couple years ago the Jazz had two diminutive guards and it it was proven it didn’t work even though they were excellent Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley great back court didn’t win a championship so what’s the way to win championships the Celtics just did it the big wings that play two ways and are versatile so who are those guys in this draft that the Jazz can get and why aren’t they going higher well there’s deficiencies in a lot of these guys but let’s let’s introduce you to a few of them let’s start with T John Salam I think he’s likely gone by pick eight but the pitch for him is basically he’s 18 years old played professional basketball in France played for cholay basket who wasn’t the best team which allowed him a bigger role he scored 10 points per game which is about 14 per game on per 36 minute stats if you’re looking for how much he played and then he also just had he has unteachable traits he’s got big long arms that aren’t just thin and slender but he’s got big kind of thicker legs that you you want to see a prospect have the ability to put on weight put on muscle and grow but he’s not all he’s not a string bean right now he’s 68 or sorry 68 69 with about 207 to 210 pounds and what he does really really well is he runs the floor like a deer he plays like his hair is on fire always working hard and then there’s the fact that you’d be like oh he’s probably not very skilled is he raw yes but is there refined skill absolutely he puts the ball on the floor okay his shot looks really good and he has the confidence the the ability to put that shot up is something that matters when when your team’s in a big moment well he in the biggest game of the season to that juncture in the quarterfinals against Paris he orchestrated an upset scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter being the best player on the court and that’s a really good league and it was an Underdog Story and the best player on the court was an 18-year-old who had 10 straight points put backs three balls coming off screens shooting threes head fake getting to the rack rebounding defending good players did it all he’s one of the tools iest players in this class is he G to give you immediate reward probably not but I don’t think he’s also that far away like some other players that are drafted just for the raw tools so that’s that’s an introduction to tjon Salon if he were there at 10 I would be pretty shocked and I would I would jog to the podium it’s not a Sprint to the podium one but I would jog to the podium now there’s Cody Williams I think he’s gone but I say that with less uh belief than I did about tjan Sal likely being gone for the Jazz at number 10 Cody Williams I think is gone because he played varying roles at Colorado demonstrates some touch shooting the ball despite low volume which I think is a really good indicator for how well you shoot the balls how much you shoot it how much your team has confidence in you to shoot the basketball he’s tall can handle the ball can score in different areas of the basketball court shoots floaters gets to the rim has length defended different positions he’s considered a good Defender and and he didn’t impress the combine agility drills but he is 6 and long growing into his body he’s weighing about 185 lbs right now and said he wants to get up to uh about 200 but he said he doesn’t know exactly what’s going to work for him uh he’s a very well spoken kid who has an older brother who’s a blooming star in Jaylen Williams of Oklahoma City from Santa Clara I don’t think they’re exactly the same Prospect so if you’re looking for a comparison I don’t think it’s that maybe if you’re old enough which is well beyond my years maybe he’s Jaylen Rose esque the one that was in Indiana was about 20 per game for the Pacers and plays kind of an old school game compared to right now of shooting mid-range jump shots creating for others as a supplementary ball handler not quite the point guard that you think traditionally right now but Jaylen Rose was the facilitator for those teams that were in the era of when I was born but right now Jaylen Williams is brother Jaylen Rose excuse me played in that era Cody Williams Jaylen Williams’s brother Cody Williams has this ability to create for others and attack matchups you you had a vote of confidence on a team in Colorado that was quite good made a run in the NCAA tournament eventually falling to Marquette they played they played a style where they had two players that were all confer Tristan D Silva is likely to be a top 20 pick and KJ Simpson probably like a top 40 pick both were all conference had the ball in their hands and yet when they wanted mismatches to exploit it was often in Cody williams’ hands that’s a leap of faith I I know that he’s talked about it being available at 10 my guess is he can’t he won’t fall that far because there’s there’s too many traits to like and the the deficiencies aren’t as glaring like his shot even even though it didn’t look good at the combine and I saw it I was unimpressed by that facet he did shoot 40 plus percent from three on low volume Matas bis’s shot is far worse off Ron Holland shot far worse off so I I think his deficiencies are the least glaring and I think he ends up going who could take him you may ask that’s a great question I’d guess the Hornets the Blazers probably take the longest looks the Hornets are at six the Blazers are at seven they take the longest looks and maybe the Pistons at at eight or sorry at five the Spurs I don’t think would take him at eight it it seems like they want either a guard whether it be Nica topic Rob Dillingham or maybe they want tjon Salon pair of Frenchman with Victor wenyama depends what they do at their fourth pick and who’s picked fourth so that’s why the Spurs are a wild card the Hornets could go for a long slender Wing I don’t think they take him because they have Brandon Miller they have lamelo ball they have some of these young pieces maybe they go for someone that can fill a more defined role because if you don’t figure to be the star there there is maybe roles that you should be selected to play because they have two young talented players in place the Blazers definitely have young talented players in place with the ball in their hands so that may limit him maybe they go for buellis who’s a little bit taller maybe ton Salon who’s a little bit burlier believe it or not even though he’s not very heavy himself than Williams and so there is is a world in which he falls yes obviously he’ have to get through the Grizzlies as well at 9ine but I uh I think there’s a world I would say there’s about a 35% chance Cody Williams is there for the Jazz at at 10 but who knows prognosticating this draft is a exercise and futility because I I don’t know what’s going to happen and I study this all the time then there’s a guy with his stock certainly falling that I would have been shocked if you told me this in November that’s Ron Holland I’ve made this pitch Barlo for the every dares made this pitch yesterday uh so the Jazz definitely have a chance at him they have a chance at Ron Holland of this Trio he’s probably the most likely to have it to be there for the Jazz and if IID told you that in November you would have looked like looked at me like I was an alien saying that Ron Holland who was projected to be a top three pick uh maybe even the number one pick and the Showcase that actually showed a blossoming star and Alex SAR according to everyone was supposed to be the showcase for Ron Holland to do exactly that so there’s that Ron Holland you heard the pitch yesterday but if you didn’t what does he do well he scored 20 a game as an 18-year-old in the G League playing professional basketball he’s a really good athlete at 6’7 uh he had a 38 and a half inch vertical struggles to shoot the ball but does create separation attacks the rack uh I compare him at the high end to be like RJ Barrett on the low end to be more of the ilk of Josh oogi a defensive energy guy who plays really hard but lacks the skill offensively to be a super useful offensive piece we’ll see maybe he’s in the middle of that and what how good is that I don’t know right now of those guys I I think Sal and Williams uh look to be picked higher but those three I would be very happy to take I would happy happily take the gamble of taking those three so for that to happen the Jazz to have their pick of the litter of that Trio or even two of those three Wings maybe just one of them the Jazz especially for the case of Cody Williams because I talked about how I think there’s a chance he falls and the two teams I I mostly t on the Pistons I don’t know what they’re going to do at five but you know maybe they’re they’re the team that snags them I don’t know but six and eight at least I can see six and seven I should say at least I see a way he doesn’t get picked there for the Jazz to have a chance at Cody Williams let’s say I think the Jazz need to hope that dton connect a a older player who can really shoot the ball but the reason they take him over a guy like Cody Williams would be safety that that this player is more immediately projectable and has more immediate returns at least this team should think maybe a guy like Devin Carter Rises meaning teams attempt to draft safely take the more immediately projectable players Alla haime hakz or Allah Brandon Poky of last year maybe even if you go a little further back Christian Brown was picked 21st after playing three years at Kansas and made immediate playing time not a ton but some of it in the NBA finals for Denver that year and then played a ton this year after losing Bruce Brown so maybe teams go that way that believe they can compete sooner rather than later that’s how the Jazz would get to Cody Williams well coming up next let’s discuss the guards who I would consider drafting but first a word from FanDuel summertime means baseball the NBA finals and more and you can bet it all on fandle the NBA Finals just finished but it doesn’t mean betting’s over right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet yeah you heard that right that’s 200 bucks you can use to bet everything from the finals MVP which was Jaylen Brown you could do it for baseball who’s going to win each game to who’s going to hit one out of the park could it be my guy Rafael Des who earlier this this year hit six home runs in six cons or hit a home run in six consecutive games that’s never been done before could you take a swing at De and see if he can take a swing to hit it out of Fenway that’s one I’d recommend visit fanduel.com lockon and add a big win to your summer bucket list FanDuel America’s number one sports book welcome back to lockon Jazz leaf with you here and I’m giving you kind of my preference for who could be available what does it mean to be available at 10 and how can it happen well it start at the top I talked about Rob Dillingham at the top I think he’s a number one option on a team that probably doesn’t Faire that well and that’s not a slight to Dillingham it’s just there’s not very many small guards that have the enormous cap ability and capacity to score and lead a team to the promised land while being deficient on one side of the basketball and a lot of guards are deficient on one side of the basketball that it’s very rare you get that good of a two-way player dillingham’s not necessarily the most inep defender in college but he’s not a good one in college and he doesn’t bode that well on defense in the NBA when if they play attack that guy a basketball and he will be that guy that said I think he’s a more Shifty Maybe quicker version of Darius Garland Garland shot the heck out of the ball when he was picked by uh by Cleveland out of Vanderbilt and he only played a few years or excuse me a few games at Vanderbilt Kentucky Rob Dillingham was was the show he orchestrated everything made made teams fearful scored out of pick and roll hit a ton of shots he shot 45% from three and most of his diet was uh off the dribble really difficult really difficult to do that now you give him a spaced basketball floor and I think could be the highest scorer of this class A guy who scores 24 a game in his prime and is able to drop eight dimes but that team probably doesn’t figure to be doing that well if he’s scoring on that diet of shots that’s that’s just the reality of the situation I also don’t think the Jazz like this archetype of player because they’re trying to find the point guard of the future but you just saw the Boston Celtics who Danny hay had a significant hand in constructing they won well their guards Drew holiday they just traded for a I believe he’s a seven time all defensive player Derek white all defensive player big guards you both score the ball but it’s not necessarily their main Forte then you have the big wings that he drafted and obviously the Jazz are hoping to emulate and Tatum and brown or excuse me Brown and Tatum in terms of 16 and 17 draft in in the correct order there so what other guards are there are there bigger guards that could be picked even though they may possess less scoring ability well that brings us to Nica topic he’d be really interesting topic for reference 6 foot6 guard out of Serbia he uh scored 15 points six assists but he recently tore his ACL that could be a blessing in disguise a lot of picks that have been picked in the lottery and come back uh have have gone on to have great careers and they all say it behooves them to to have that year learning and rehabbing with NBA teams well you have to have significant talent to go on the lottery anyway so maybe that injury kind of that stat of injury recovery is is a little biased but any anyway what does he do well he’s an 89th percentile pick and roll operator he’s 6’6 what does he do poorly that allows him in this class to be still available at 10 potentially well one he’s injured but two his shot is shaky and he’s not he doesn’t have this burst nor the top end guile or strength that you would say well Luca donic doesn’t have burst uh there’s other guys who have who aren’t super fast but they’re tall and know how to score well he doesn’t have the guile nor the shooting that Luca donic possessed obviously donic is crazy good he’s more of a slasher who relies on being taller and have being crafty around the rim but I wonder if losing some burst and then at the NBA level not being able to shoot is it’s kind of a death null at times if people are able to go under his screen and they’re athletically able to uh you know contest should he shoot it or if they go over and can still get back and influence his pick and roll game there are some scares but he certainly if everything pans out and he’s a pick and roll operator at 6’6 who can put the ball in the decks score the ball and make you pay for uh with each read he’s great at deciding whether to shoot it or dump it off that that would be a person to take I I would like topit at 10 he’d be just as high on my wish list in fact I think I have him high rated more highly especially before his injury then I had Cody Williams and tjon Salon I know Jazz fans are right now like scrambling how we need a point guard well if you really think about it keonte George probably overachieved as a rookie yes is he a FR point guard I’m not going to say that he is for certain and Danny Ang is right to take take his time making that assessment but that was konay George’s first year being a point guard and he was pretty good at it yeah he had some shooting woses but that’s the least of my concerns is his shooting I think he could add some Arc to his shot and I think he could become better but if you had a point guard who had some of the the assists the individual Talent showing on the the the passes he made in pick and role the learning curve in which he picked up playing the point guard and still managed to score as well as he did in some games he had nine threes against the Golden State Warriors like that was really really difficult to do for anyone and he did it as a rookie so I I don’t know why the discourse is so negative at least the discourse I see surrounding keontay George because even if he’s not the franchise point guard he’s definitely a franchise piece down the road not necessarily the piece that moves you forward he’s not the franchise player but he’s a piece that can Elevate the franchise and this is what you’re drafting in this class so I I wouldn’t be so Swift to move aside from konay George for any of these players here even as much as I like Dillingham as much as I like topic then you get a guy who’s older dillingham’s a freshman topic is an 18yar old Devin Carter 22 years old rugged physical Defender who made his living for his first three years of his collegiate career as a Defender someone who was a pest M was more of the ilk of a aggravator scored sparingly kind of have a knack for making big plays fan favorite if he was on your Providence Friars not a fan favorite of the rest of the big team well his senior year or I guess his red shirt junior year Devin Carter uh scored 20 points per game collected nine rebounds per game was an all defensive player on Providence and figures to be a lottery pick because of the sheer production with which he was able to play at Providence and take different roles I know there’s some smoke building that the Jazz like him I know a great mind one of my favorite people to talk basketball with in the world Gordy cha former Jazz coach under Jerry Sloan loves Devin Carter I don’t know if he loves him specifically for the Jazz but he he he’s said many times many people have said well the Jazz needs some defense and if you’re not going to get the star franchise why not get a player that could help sooner rather than later I tend to be of the opinion you need to have a projectable that the team needs to get better in the long run rather than hastily patch up some some holes like I don’t think the Jazz improving their defense marginally with a really good defensive rookie does that much for the Jazz’s future that’s why I tend to bank on traits and upside but I definitely would scoff at the idea if someone like Gordy likes him the reason I’m hesitant about Carter he’s had only one year of of a good shooting season Carter had a 39% three-point percentage the last season he played and it was on high volume and he shot him off the dribble he shot him from deep but years prior did not shoot well players that are similar to that who shot poorly in previous years and previous stops who were good to Defenders Davon Mitchell Davon Mitchell shot 45% at Baylor in his his showcase season in which he ended up getting the ninth pick after winning the national championship well before that I think he was a 29% shooter it turns out the 29% shooter at Baylor the year before that and Auburn before that even were probably more true and closer to what he would be in the NBA than what he what he showed at 45% he wasn’t able to stay on the court offensively and now he’s he’s kind of a uh searching for a home he he’s not necessarily a guy that you’re certain is going to make the NBA roster and actually get minutes Carter I don’t think is necessarily as much in that case because he’s a really good rebounder and he’s a better shooter because he shot more difficult shots but I don’t necessarily think he’s the guy that I’d have a lot of fa faith in and I wouldn’t hitch my franchise and especially I wouldn’t get my hopes up if the Jazz took him that would be more of a short-term patch the holes up for me rather than a long-term ploy to get better something that excuse me play to get better um beyond the the short term that would only work to me if the Jazz chose the direction of competing sooner rather than later and as you guys know I’ve been vocal about the Jazz playing the long game of getting better gradually by attaining stars through the draft to compliment the likes of lowry Markin to compliment keontay George should he be the point guard of the future or the two guard of the future to compliment whoever this year’s rookie is I I think the stars are to be found later and if you were to trade once you have nice pieces and able in order and enabling the Jazz to have a true star you’d only trade that to get a true star once you know you have the foundation to make it worthwhile to do so that’s my perspective I know I’m not the only one who thinks that but I know it’s not a consensus belief so let me know what you guys think who would you take what do you think of that analysis and it’s been a pleasure talking to you guys as always I got another fun episode and just a disclaimer for you guys Friday the episode will be dropping a little bit later but I’m having the athletic writer Tony Jones who writes the best pieces on Jazz basketball is a hoopster himself knows he knows all about the NBA watches tons of college hoops loves the draft even if he didn’t have to cover it he would be watching the draft that’s the type of guy Tony is so I’m having him on Friday but the the recording will be later so I will have that up Friday evening as opposed to the the way the we hours of Friday morning like I typically do and last thing to to ask you guys you guys know what I’m going to ask lockon has launched the first first ever National Sports 247 I would select Cody Williams out of Colorado.
If the Jazz were serious, they would trade:
Collins
Clarkson,
Sexton
Yurtseven
Kessler
Markanen(maybe)
and any future 2027,2028 draft assets to teams for as many 2025, 2026 draft rights.
(Try and get the Boozer twins, and Ace Bailey, maybe Flagg).
Then use any additional future picks and salary stash to trade or to pick up 2025, 2026 free agents. Go ahead and get rid of that OKC debt!!!!
Who else is here from the recommended section?
I have Ron Holland, Cody Williams, Tidjane Salaun and Dalton Knecht in that order of who I would take as perfect 10s.
