🚨BREAKING Golden State Warriors News On Gary Payton II OPTING IN To His 2024-25 Contract

[Music] some breaking news early on this Wednesday here on Golden State Warriors today by chat sports I’m Chase senior and that’s Gary pton II opting in to his $9.1 million player option for the 2024 2025 season what does this mean for Golden State we’re going to cover every single angle of this story coming up here on today’s show Kendra Andrews breaking the news just moments ago that gp2 opting into that player option for next year by opting in Gary pton the second now has the flexibility to extend with the Golden State Warriors on a contract extension at some point this off season maybe something to keep in mind and look out for down the road here this is why you subscribe to the channel when there’s Warriors breaking news when they make a move we cover it here on Golden State Warriors today NBA draft next week free agency after that a huge period for the dubs and we are going to have you covered for your One-Stop shop for the best warriors coverage right here on YouTube from my view here and we’ve talked about this on the show this was an expected move as Gary pyton II has stated he wants to be with the Warriors long term and find his way to a multi-year contract extension and when you have this type of money in play for gp2 this makes sense and he knows what it’s like to to not be involved with the Warriors organization he’s played his best basketball for Golden State he’s fit seamlessly on this roster he’s a big cultural fit for what they want to do he’s been a good byproduct of their Player Development system and moving forward Gary pyton II can have a good role on this Warriors team as far as playing time as far as fit and then of course for him the money makes sense and if he’s able to stay healthy this is a pretty solid rotation piece for the Warriors who could come at an affordable rate if he plays up to his standards if he plays up to his potential here’s what gp2 had to say about his contract situation a couple of months ago in April we’re going to figure it out if we can redo it and get it done that would be great but right now this moment take some time let this ease out but definitely for sure figure it out well gp2 obviously took the time he figured it out and he’s returning to the Warriors at least for the 2024 2025 season and he is their best backcourt defender what’s very interesting and overall impressive about Gary pton the second is the fact that he has been able to guard throughout his Warriors tender tenure almost all five positions on the floor Chase has he guarded centers yes because of his leaping ability because of his wings span because of his defensive Talent at times on switches he has had do guard centers down low and he’s held his own obviously you don’t want to do that ideally time and time again because then Gary pyton II is going to be the byproduct of a mismatch but he’s been able to hold his own in those spots and the defensive versatility is the point that I’m making here he can guard point guards he can guard shooting guards he can guard Wings he’s guarded guys who are bigger than him and for a Warriors team that the defensive play for this team has been sporadic gp2 went on the floor if healthy has been a consistent defensive Maven you look at his numbers this past year only 44 games played that of course is the concern 15 12 minutes per with this deal with him coming back and the money that he’s getting paid and the defensive attributes that he brings to the floor if you can bump that up the 17 to 20 minutes per and the numbers can go up a little bit and the games played can increase again for a solid rotation piece 9 plus million isn’t bad and if you redo the deal if you do a new contract extension could you lower that number the three-point number Solid his fit pretty good also the second highest net rating in 2023 2024 at 5.9 now I do want to Circle back to one of the previous points that I’ve made on today’s show and then in the past when talking about gp2 that’s the health and the health is a huge concern because even when he was a focal point of that finals team back in 2022 Miss some time now he used that play into landing that big deal at the Portland Trailblazers and then the dubs pretty much traded James wisman away to get gp2 back and then he was H yet again and when you look at games Miss by year this is why this is a little bit of a risk if you do give him that contract extension and or he only plays out the final year worth 9 plus million there’s been two seasons in the last five in which he’s been able to stay relatively healthy and play 60 plus games 2020 2021 and then 2022 2023 outside of that 36 not good 11 games year not ideal and then 38 this past year I’d be hesitant because of those reasons to give him a longterm extension worth anything more than $5 million because of the health concerns but by exercising this player option it does give you some roster building flexibility and some Financial flexibility both of those things important for the dubs going into 2024 2025 want to hear from you when when we talk about gp2 on this show videos do well and he is a fan favorite are you happy that he is going to return this upcoming year why for yes and for no let me know down in the comment section right now as for the Warriors backcourt depth as of this moment Steph Curry Bonafide Superstar Stephen A Smith would say Bonafide Superstar Brandon psky going into year two a lot of potential on both ends of the floor for him to be a high level impact player I like the ability and the potential that he has moving forward in his respective NBA career Moses Moody I’ve seen the flashes now it’s time for him to take that Jonathan kaminga leap in which kaminga made last year you have gp2 and then summer league Legend Lester Q play The Young Guns pyton should not be getting minutes over pmy or Moody which makes him the fourth guard on this roster which is why ideally again within extend you lower that number but I think the issue that the Warriors have had is the depth and now in bringing back gp2 you have pky you have Moses Moody you could do worse as far as your guard depth than those three players right there now gp2 might be the fourth guard on this roster but again that’s fine because if he’s getting 15 to 20 minutes per night he’s playing High level defense he’s throwing down some hammers in transition or in the half court and he’s knocking down some threes that’s a valuable player as part of your rotation and when the playoffs come around you know that if you have a defensive assignment for gp2 he’s going to be able to handle it now do you want to play him over the young players no because you want to see these young guys blossome you want to see them develop and you see the ability that pods has that Moody has psky last year as a rookie you will take these numbers and then going into year two can he be a 12 to 15 points per game guy while maintaining 45% from the floor almost 39% from three if that’s the case great news and then for Moses Moody can he become that 10 to 12 points per game guy can he up the three-point numbers to 38 39% and then 46% from the field should be used situationally but that’s not a bad thing that’s not a slight on gp2 defensive assignments depending on the matchup you need some athleticism you need some explosion that’s when you put him into the lineup and you could also use him as trade bait at some point looking ahead yes he’s played his best basketball with golden state but other teams might look at him dunks athletic athleticism defense an occasional Corner three that’s a playoff rotation type of player that other teams could be very interested in now here’s some Intel from Anthony Slater on gp2 Payton’s midsized $9.1 million expiring deal could be valuable and salary matching for potential trades the Warriors are exploring various Avenues to improve as the draft and free agency near so it’s no guarantee he plays out the final year of his contract with golden state and that brings us to this portion of this conversation while he’s under contract for 2024 2025 there’s a couple of different Avenues in which the Warriors could go about the gp2 situation and what did I say a little while ago this gives you financial and roster flexibility and you knew that gp2 wasn’t going to opt out $9 million for him is good and it could end up paying dividends for Golden State whether he’s on the team or off the team Warriors must be under that second apron to aggregate by the way so be Mike done leaving should the Warriors give an extension to gp2 I would say no unless you can lower that number s for sign P for pass and a Slater said he can be used as salary filler my final thoughts here we know that the Warriors are looking on forward and they might try to move on from a CP3 from a Klay Thompson from a cavon looney the Warriors are in a spot right now where they’re trying to save money and give an extension to a low man on the depb chart with injury concerns kind of contradicts that right the next move that you should look out for there’s a deadline for it June 28th if the Warriors cut cavon Looney that’s $5 million that you free up so potentially and it’s still a very expensive roster move on from cavon Looney 5 million here then you have Klay Thompson Chris Paul that’s a lot of money that gives you flexibility as well another reminder subscribe to the show when breaking news happens we break it down yesterday’s show six moves to beat the Boston Celtics make sure you go check that 1. I love GP2 and it's great he's staying but he was never opting out because his injury history means he's overpaid despite his valuable on-court production. Moses and Podz need to each be playing 25-30 minutes every night next season but GP2 rarely lets us down when healthy and an extension for $5m per season might be a good option, although now he can be traded so if that happens Quinones has showed that he's more than capable of pickling up extra slack if needed which should also see him improve.

  2. When he is healthy he is good but he is injured a lot. Warriors can trade him depending what they want to do.
