Stephen A. thinks Monty Williams was ‘IN PURGATORY’ with the Pistons | First Take

breaking news into first take this morning out of the NBA after one season the Pistons have fired coach Monty Williams who leaves with five years in 65 million plus left on his deal sources telling our Adrien wowski wow Stephen A your reaction to the latest I don’t know how well you know Monty Williams Molly but you know I know he’s a Class Act he’s a Class Act he’s a very God-fearing man and as I said on First on get up earlier um Monty Williams know doubt is on his knees looking up to the heavenly father and thanking him for this right here right now he’s been in purgatory uh for quite a while uh being with Detroit um I I I don’t know if he’ll ever admit it or not but there was clear hesitancy once he took the job clearly you know it was a lot of money involved got about 13 million a year Etc but Detroit has not been an ideal place for quite some time and you know him being out of that situation particularly with with Troy Weaver being going as the GM it is clearly the right situation the right decision to be made Monty Williams as far as I’m concerned never belonged in Detroit my belief is that he should have stayed in Phoenix they should have work like didn’t he get a raw deal in Phoenix sure did I think he got a raw deal in Phoenix and if you’re going to end up someplace he he should be in some place like LA or something like that but the Detroit situation no it was never the right fit for him I’m happy for him even if he doesn’t I’m assuming he already knows to be happy but just in case he doesn’t Monty you be fine my brother fine everything’s going to be all right you’ll be just fine I know Detroit had a nice draft but it feels like that team they need they need an overhaul me because it’s just the city deserves better and it just and they fired Van Gundy quickly too a couple years they gave him a fortune and they got to that guy rid of him in a couple years they’ve had a history of doing it GM well but you got to remembery had control and so what happen is he was held respons that’s since Tom Gores had bought the team in 2011 he’ll now be looking for his sixth head coach no that’s one of the reasons why they can’t win a game also I also want to say this um I know we’ve been talking a lot about JJ reick but with Monty Williams available that is a situation that the Los Angeles Lakers should should should should should look at okay so I I would I would definitely say that as well they should look at it um obviously jeie bus you know how much I love jeie bus I’m rooting for her to find the right person for the job respect bra pinka what he’s going to do you know and yes I respect Kurt Rambis too I was joking around about him earlier but I was I I respect him too so listen they all going to be a part of of the process and we’ll see what happens and um you know I I think Monty Williams definitely should be a candidate for that job what do they have the fifth pick in the draft who the Detroit yeah they did not win a fourth or fifth pick they did not win the lottery somewhere in that area they had what they lose 29 in a row what was the number like it was 28 29 in a row I mean I mean that’s that was and they were pretty they they gave you an they can turn it around though the Lions turned it around we said about the Lions for years they were knocking at a Super Bowl this year easier in football you get the one quarterback who plays well basketball you need a lot of different guys it’s a little different but you’re right yeah you’re [Music] [Applause] right NBA is

On First Take, Stephen A. Smith and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo join Molly Qerim to talk through the Detroit Pistons firing Monty Williams after just one season at the helm.

  1. So when they fire coaches do they not get paid their money? Is there no penalty of firing them?

  2. A class act , he took the job and did very little to improve play. Remember when good coaches made players better. How is this guy credible to coach LA? Lost in the finals and didn’t adjust after

  3. Few other jobs allow you to get fired and then still walk away with $65 million. Don't blame the coaches. Blame the idiot owners.

  4. JJ Redick has just lost his Lakers job opportunity. Monty will become LeBron's next Yes Man Coach. Detroit is too impatient, at least give Monty another season before firing him.

  5. Stephen A is not gonna say Monty is a bad coach because he’s bkack and their friends. He most definitely likes to give black coaches all the praise right or wrong.

  6. This is a bad joke praising a man that stole millions just to give Killian Hayes the most minutes a guy they cut b4 the trade deadline…

  7. 1. He’s not that good of coach
    2. He’s going to be asking for similar money you think lakers cheap organization will pay him more then 13 mill a year lol
    3. Lakers blow

  8. The Pistons did him a solid. He wasn't gonna succeed there and the front office is a joke. At least he got paid. Sad cause I miss the Pistons being a competitive team.

  9. Pay me a tenth of what they paid Monty Williams & I could do just as good of a job or better. There's no way anyone else could do worse

  10. Stephan A is crazy. Monty is so overrated, and it’s about time. There is no way this Pistons team shouldn’t be better with so much talent!!

  11. Hes just not a good coach. Sure he got phoenix to the finals but they didnt win….so thats that. Detroit had zero expectations and he didnt do anything there. good coaches can build something out of nothing….Maybe he can go back to being an assistant coach somewhere. Hes not strong enough to lead superstar led teams
