Griffin gets into it on the floor with Randol hard to tell if there are any punches being thrown under there but Griffin took acceptance Adams going long Mor H it he hit it he hit it jat Insanity you got to be kidding welcome to grits and grinds a Memphis Grizzlies podcast my name is Keith Parish we are one week away from the NBA draft so on today’s episode I’m going to go over the latest news and rumors involving the Grizzlies plus we have some summer league updates there’s also a few other things to get into plus uh the first big contract of the NBA off season was handed out so we got a few things to get into before we do it though just a reminder about Underdog fantasy right now it’s a great time to sign up for Underdog because if you use my promo code to FB BF they will match your opening deposit up to $250 they will also give you a free bonus pick so if you want to play fantasy sports for cash you want to pick highers or lowers you can do it all at Underdog fantasy remember that promo code fbb all right I guess we will start with maybe some rumors involving the Grizzlies let’s be honest a lot of the stuff is not hard news we’re in the conjecture phase of the off season of course every team has their priorities every team’s fan bases have their ideas about what the teams should be doing for the gr is of course very focused on improving the front Court finding a big man but then also you just have a lot of options ways you want to build around jaah and jiren and Desmond Bane going into next season one of the most interesting little rumors I saw maybe it’s not that interesting as far as a League wide basis but Matt Mo from the Action Network reported that the Grizzlies are expected to try and find or are expected to try and add multiple centers to the roster this season I mean that could be yes with the ninth pick or even the 39th pick um that could be someone they take in the draft it could also be a free agent they add or it could be a trade now he did mention a specific name as far as a trade Target for the Grizzlies and he said Dron sharp from the Nets that’s right I’m leading the show with a Dron sharp rumor the idea being that Grizzlies would trade one of their bench wings that is like zire Williams or Sant Alama maybe Jak laravia and then like a second round pick for Daron sharp I mean it makes sense theoretically possibly for both teams just because maybe the Nets want to have a look at a wing the gries of course have this hole in the front court is Dron sharp the answer to your front Court prayers I don’t know I am not a Dron sharp expert I feel like I can give informed opinions about a large number of NBA players uh don sharp not one of those um he’s a guy who’s played you know 10 to 15 minutes a game off the bench for the Nets the last few seasons he has not caught my eye over the past couple of Seasons I mean a guy playing you know 15 minutes a game off the bench for a 50 loss team I don’t know if that’s going to be your answer um the positives sharp you look at his per minute production pretty solid he has some really good rebounding stats some really good block shot stats when you go to block shot percentage and rebounding percentage but also I Circle back to again is an admitted nonexpert on this guy I go I Circle back to the fact that he wasn’t playing that many minutes on teams that weren’t that good also he’s going into the fourth year of his rookie deal he’s still very very young that’s something positive he will be playing his age 23 season in 2024 2025 which makes him the same age as some draft prospects like Dalton connect and donon Holmes but uh that means the grizz’s will have to make a decision about whether to resign him or not so I don’t know if that’s a sourced report about potential interest in Dron sharp but that maybe could be just someone to fill out that front Court rotation for the Grizzlies like sharp had not been high my list of guys that I’ve been targeting perhaps that’s an oversight by me like I said he’s never really caught my eye there are also a lot of other bigs maybe similar to Sharp guys on their rookie deals guys making close to the minimum guys who haven’t really broken through you know across the league there’s a bunch of these guys and so maybe it’s my fault for not highlighting them um some other guys like I haven’t mentioned that could fit that mold it’s like a guy like Jackson Hayes um who I believe has a player option you know maybe he opts to leave the Lakers you could also think about guys like Jericho Sims on the Knicks uh James wisman maybe fits into this category guy I’m not that into uh James wisman free agent of course you know he’s a bigger name because of his high draft profile but that could be the kind of guy I mean we keep mentioning modest free agent targets like Andre Drummond you know Jaylen Smith goo patad possibly trading for someone like Daron sharp who’s on the last year of his rookie deal maybe that’s a way you just bolster your overall front court and again the option for the Grizzlies this year it’s not necessarily like making the huge Splash trade doing something like I’ve mentioned on previous episodes like yakob purle if the Raptors maybe add a big man in the draft um looking at like the Jared Allen idea stuff like that maybe you don’t do that maybe you do something smaller around the edges now speaking about some of those guys you know some of them the smaller name some of them names we’ve mentioned before I feel like there is a little bit of reporting that perhaps applies to the Grizzlies like one I’m seeing it reported a lot that the Orlando Magic are targeting a center this off season now the magic have the 18th pick they also have salary cap space a lot of people saying they’re going to Target someone like Malik monk or Klay Thompson they also could Target Isaiah hardenstein there’s been reports they might be targeting him and they possibly could pry him away from the Knicks now of course if the magic were to Target a big either through the draft or through free agency I think that makes us think oh then maybe Wendell Carter Jr is available a guy that a lot of people keep bringing up as an option for the Grizzlies in a trade it also again maybe reflects poorly on our dreams as Grizzlies fans that the team that has W Carter Jr and also last year had goo baz another guy we keep mentioning that that team is looking to fix their Center position they decided those guys aren’t the best options but like that’s something to monitor if the magic go the route of adding a big then are their bigs available and that that kind of is the theme for the Grizzlies this off season that so much I think of their pursuit of a center could just be based on who goes where we keep hearing that Clint capella maybe linked to the Grizzlies I think maybe that’s the Hawks letting the Grizzlies know that Clint capella is available maybe it’s the Grizzlies reaching out and saying all right if you’re going to draft a big I mean even if you end up with Reet maybe regardless they’re trying to move on from capella so like you keep seeing the Grizzlies linked to uh some conversations for capella you keep seeing this constant drum beat of the grizzley wanting to trade up for Donovan kingan and if they can’t do that whichever team takes kingan well then maybe you have an interest in getting one of their bigs if that is like the Pistons at five if the Trailblazers at seven take Donovan kingan do you want any of their bigs I mean most people I feel like in the comments of the last YouTube episode you guys were adamant no thank you uh trying to see if Robert Williams can stay healthy but like that’s going to be I think what the Grizzlies are going to do if they’re unable to pull off that trade for kingan I mean maybe the trade is you know just trade your 2025 first rounder if kingan Falls to five or Falls to 7 you know would you offer the Trailblazers at 7 your 2025 first rounder maybe like top four protected to move up and take Donovan kingan if it’s to be believed all these reports of the G is wanting to go get him that trade maybe Mak sense for the Trailblazers they already have DeAndre Aton and du PR maybe they would do it again if the Hornets take klling in at six and they have Mark Williams and Nick Richards Nick Richards another one of those maybe not as good younger centers uh sort of akin to a Dron sharp that you could trade for depending how the draft broke breaks um more draft reports that possibly could affect the Grizzlies um you’re seeing a lot of teams saying they’re going to be willing to trade their first round pick like uh the Philadelphia 76ers interested in trading the number 16 pick for immediate help it seems like the Sixers offseason plan is to chase down Paul George maybe if not Paul George they go after like Klay Thompson um but they are very open to trading their 16th pick for short term or immediate help there’s a lot of teams like this again I think there’s going to be a lot of first round picks available if the reports are true that the Grizzlies are one of the teams that likes a lot of players in this draft you could see the Grizzlies maybe trying to move up and get some of those picks maybe not necessarily even a trade down maybe they trade a future pick to pick up like the 16th pick when it comes to immediate help though that’s where I think the question marks come up for what the Grizzles would actually offer I think the only movable player that the Grizzlies have that a contending team would consider immediate help would be someone like Marcus Smart I can’t imagine exactly what the trade would be with the Philadelphia 76ers I mean I could imagine they’d be interested in a Marcus Smart but you’d want the 16th pick and then something else I don’t know exactly what that would be now as far as another team in the first round that has made it known they’re willing to trade their first- round pick for immediate help that’s the Suns and the Suns have a player that would actually fit well on the Grizzlies that I haven’t mentioned I don’t think maybe more than once and that’s Yousef nurkic okay the Suns had the 22nd pick this year and they keep making it known through the reporters through leaks that they are willing to trade their number 22 pick their 2031 first rounder and nurkic to bring in immediate help to this team now I do think nurkic fits on the Grizzlies downside of nurkic not a good finisher um has extreme health concerns last year one of his healthiest Seasons but last year I mean he played well nurkic’s positives would fit great in the front court with the Grizzlies he’s a very strong rebounder he’s a big body he’s a useful passer he’s also the kind of guy that like you could start and he’s not going to like throw a fit if he doesn’t close games that seems like a perfect fit honestly on the Grizzlies outside of maybe the health concerns but getting him from the Suns this is not necessarily a salary dump for the Suns it looks like the suns are prepared to go well into the second apron they’re trying to get back immediate help I also have difficulty envisioning a trade where you would send like a Marcus Smart for nurkic even to match the salary you’d have to probably take back like nir little I mean I don’t know if that makes the grizzly immediately better Marcus Smart a way better player in a vacuum than you nurkic but I think theoretically if the Suns offered you the 22nd pick in this year’s draft and the 2031 first round pick that they have available to trade like two first rounders even if one is the 22nd pick two first rounders and nurkic to get Marcus Smart I think it’s a fair it’s an even trade and it of course fills an exact need for the Grizzlies and in that situation you could use the ninth and 22nd picks in this year’s draft Maybe at 9ine you get someone like connect or you get Cody Williams or Ron Holland and then at 22 you can pick up one of those bigs maybe kle wear drops maybe it’s EES Missy maybe it’s Philip howski whoever it is at 22 that could be an option there maybe donon Holmes like that could be again a theoretically interesting thing no one’s reporting this that like Marcus Smart is even available this is just again me continuing to go back to my analysis of the fact that uh his skill set a little bit overlapped on the Grizzlies and he remains the most movable player who has immediate value I think to other teams you’re not trading ja jiren and Desmond I don’t think Brandon Clark’s going to be on the move right now probably holds more value to you than anybody else if he’s healthy that’s a great pairing in the front Court you’re already so thin in the front Court you’re not looking to move that guy anyways and then the young guys I think Vince Williams Jr and GG Jackson you highly value them and I don’t think you’re ready to move on from those guys to bring in help now again nurkic fits in the category of a player who’s not that sexy necessarily but whose skill set fits great with the Grizzlies now looking at some of the most recent mock drafts I think these are always maybe fun to go over to see what people are saying League wide about the Grizzlies the latest one from ESPN from Jonathan gavone has the Grizzlies taking Cody Williams this is one of the first times I’ve seen the Grizzlies linked to taking Cody Williams He Cody was in Memphis over the weekend working out for the Grizzlies I’d be fine with that option I mean honestly I’ll probably talk myself into whoever the Grizzlies take if they keep that pick but um as a wing and a shooter and someone who’s decent in the pick and roll to my understanding seems like a good fit especially with his size um one reason maybe gavon has the Grizzlies taking Cody Williams is Dalton connect is off the board I keep seeing lots of people mock Dalton connect to the Grizzlies at 9 uh gavon is saying that right now um the Spurs and hornets and Trailblazers all have shown some interest in Connect so with those guys being on the board six seven and eight right before the grizzly at nine um perhaps connect wouldn’t even be available for the Grizzlies to take at nine um the ringer Kevin oconor has the Grizzlies taking Ron Holland with a ninth pick of course his last mock draft had the Grizz taking kle wear um Yahoo has the grizzly taken connect again I keep saying connect all over the place for the Grizzlies of course we don’t know if those mock drafts really mean anything my big takeaway from the draft big boards I’m seeing and these mock drafts is the continual fall now of nicoa topic also of like ton Saloon he’s been all over the place um and I think I’m saying his name wrong again like that guy’s been all over the place seems like he could be a good option and of course Ron Holland keeps being available I remain interested in his athletic upside and defensive fit on the Grizzlies now um the Indiana Pacers have signed Pascal SE yakum to a 4-year extension this is the first contract handed out in this year’s NBA off season this deal was expected to happen basically when the Pacers traded for seak but I think there’s a ripple effect that might be of interest to the Grizzlies much like we’re monitoring other teams to see what they do during the NBA draft if that Mak some of their bigs available uh I think the Pacers paying Pascal cakam already having Miles Turner and also reportedly being interested in retaining restricted free agent Obi toppen I think it makes some of their front Court players possibly available we keep mentioning Jaylen Smith Jaylen Smith again reportedly going to opt out of his player option he sees maybe no path to playing time on this Pacers team that has seak and Miles Turner and probably is going to resign Obi toppen uh and of course has jarus Walker also has Isaiah Jackson under contract so if Jaylen Smith is a free agent that’s a guy I’ve maintained an interest in for the Grizzlies to help fill out the depth chart in the front Court the other guys I think are also worth monitoring to see whether they are available much like a guy like Daron Sharp why not Isaiah Jackson or why not jerus Walker jarus Walker a lottery pick from last season if that guy is available that might be a very worthy player to seek out and see if you could add to your team at least find out what the price is it’s probably still pretty high a guy taken that high in last year’s draft is certain to have a lot of fans but if the Pacers don’t see any way that he can directly get on the court anytime soon maybe you could pry him free I don’t know if it would take your ninth pick to get it I don’t know if it would be worth it to trade your ninth pick to get jerus Walker a guy who did not play that much for the Pacers last year but that again is the sort of thing that is kind of interesting and definitely looking at the Pacers situation with their front Court it seems like a guy like Isaiah Jackson or jerus Walker if you could get them from the Pacers for maybe a discount that would be a good option for the Grizzlies now um let’s take a quick break and then we’ll go over uh some talk some national talk about the Luke Canard player option and we’ll look at the Grizzlies summer league schedule that just came [Applause] [Music] out all right I’m going to hit a few more things kind of Rapid Fire to wrap up this show I guess I could point out that Xavier Tillman won the NBA Championship on the Boston Celtics congratulations to Xavier Tillman he posted on Instagram that I guess he facetimed jiren Jackson Jr after the final game so there’s a picture of like Tillman wearing his Boston Celtics NBA championship hat and jiren is comically covering his face as if he’s groaning that Tillman got a ring but that’s pretty cool for Xavier Tilman I was happy to see that guy um get that success and win a title on the Celtics I guess also maybe Lamar Stevens gets a ring cuz he played on the Celtics but uh who knows I’m not totally sure how that all works um the Utah Summer League schedule dropped the Grizzlies play their first Summer League game less than three weeks from today they play on Monday July 8th at 8:00 P.M Central against the Jazz they play on Tuesday the 9th 600 P p.m. central against the 76ers and then Wednesday the 10th against the Thunder at 6 p.m. then of course the Vegas summer league starts on Friday July 12th that schedule has not come out yet as far as players we could expect to see at Summer League Of course whoever they take in the draft whether it’s the ninth pick or the 39th pick or maybe the 57th pick or whatever they end up picking you know you would assume whatever the whatever players they take in the draft are going to be there then I think we’re planning to see gii Jackson I would say probably Jay clavia I expect to see Scotty Pippen Jr there maybe Trey Jimson I wonder if Tariq bovich will come over again um you know they took him in the second round last year and he played Summer League last year beyond that who knows but like if all those players do play I mean maybe they bring back like decky JW uh Timmy Allen Matt hurt some of the hustle guys who got on the roster briefly last season but like if Scotty Pippen Jr GG Jackson Jak laravia and Trey Jimson all play and then you add like oh I don’t know Ron Holland or Dalton connect to that summer league team they could be crushing people that could be an incredible summer league team um but that’ll be fun uh to watch now of course the draft is June 26th summer league starts on July 8th NBA free agency begins on June 30th an important day before that is June 29th that is the deadline day for the Luke Canard player option now if you’ve been listening to grits and grinds I have basically come to the conclusion that I assume the Grits are going to decline that option um I was listening to dunon where Nate Duncan um said the following sentence he said it’s impossible for me to imagine they’re going to pick up his team option now the reason he said that and the reason my analysis has been the are probably going to decline that team option it’s because if you don’t pick up that team option it gives you a lot more flexibility about what you can do this summer it gets you far away from the first apron it frees up your mid-level exception to use it gives you some wiggle room when it comes to trades it gives you some wiggle room when it comes to potentially using the Steven Adams traded player exception also Luke Canard has had these health concerns you can’t really depend on him also he’s basically your fifth guard I’m considering J Desmond Marcus and Vince Williams Jr is four guards I’d rather play over Luke Canard also if you decline his option you could using that mle sign a better player potentially for Less so for all those reasons I think they’re going to decline that player option this is repeating myself but that is also why Nate Duncan said he can’t imagine they would pick up that option I mean they could bring back Luke Canard for also if they do pick up the player option the scenario where I think most of us or many of us feel like they would pick up the player option is if you do get a trade worked out if on draft night you can trade Luke canard’s contract as part of a package to bring back like Clint capella or something in that situation maybe the Hawks would value having that expiring salary in that situation you pick up the team option and you include him as part of a trade now if you don’t um pick up that option or if you don’t sign him to a longer term cheaper deal the guys on dunon their analysis of the Grizzlies for this offseason which I thought was interesting just because it’s interesting to hear a national perspective someone who doesn’t follow the team day by day every single day a lot of times they have good big picture ideas and they were pointing out what they would do this year decline that Luke Canard team option and then with your mle just signed the best Wing possible not not the best big possible they said get a big for the minimum or trade for a cheap big maybe like a dayon sharp or something but get a cheap big and then spend as much of your mle as you can bringing back a guy like Naji Marshall or Cody Martin or Kelly UB or buddy heel some of these names I’ve mentioned before their thinking was first of all you can never have too many of those guys second of all sign a guy in his 20s to a four-year deal where eventually you could move off that deal if you wanted to also they like Marcus smartt maybe not starting at the three they also big picture-wise look at the Grizzlies team and say uh starting jaw Desmond and Marcus Smart that’s not ideal let’s move Marcus to the bench let’s get a real small forward in there and we talk a lot about maybe GG Jackson having that role or Vince Williams Jr having that role I’m super comfortable with Vince Williams Jr having that role but to those guys they’re thinking hey sign a good player who can come in and play that role who makes less than Luke Canard let’s say you sign one of those guys like uh Naji Marshall or Haywood High Smith or Caleb Martin let’s say you get one of those guys with your full mle all right that’s your 13th player your ninth pick is your 14th player again you’re bringing back 12 guys from last year if you let Luke Canard go uh if you keep your top 10 pick that could be your 13th player if you sign somebody with your full mle that’s your 14th player then get a free agent big on the minimum that’s your 15th player and they also were saying like they could just just be patient do that and then at the trade deadline this year then you can make your move like draft a guy sign somebody with your mle and then see how this team looks with Marcus Smart playing alongside johnar jir Jackson Jr and Desmond Bane and then make a big decision about the future at the trade deadline as opposed to doing something on draft night I thought it was an interesting perspective and thus uh I would pass along to you and uh finally oh might as well mention uh ESPN came out with their power rankings for next season they dropped these right after the NBA Finals notably the grizzly were pretty low in the power rankings the Grizzlies came in 19th in these way too soon Power Rankings I’m not I mean you know me I don’t get mad about Power Rankings also I understand power rankings are purely for entertainment of course they mean nothing um but right now the Grizzlies don’t have a center so like I’m not bothered at all by the Gres being 19th in the power rankings like they they weren’t done by tear I assume the Gres are in a close tier with all the other teams that were around them like the Kings and the Warriors and the sun I mean maybe the suns are clearly better um I actually think right now the Suns despite their issues going forward next season the Suns could be better slash most people are going to expect them to be better than the Grizzlies so like again I’m not super worked up that the Grizzlies came in this low I think there’s a lot of obvious teams that are better than the Grizzlies I mean without a center the Grizzlies are not better than the Celtics nuggets Mavericks Thunder Timberwolves or bucks I mean what about like the Knicks or the Pacers or the 76ers or I mean the Clippers I mean personally I think next year the grzes could be better than the Clippers and you know maybe Paul George leaves them so like the Grizzles could be better than the Clippers next year but also I’m not mad that in June a publication is saying that the Grizzles are lower than the Clippers that’s it’s not problematic also I think based on the season that Grizzlies had and you look at the season some of these other teams had it makes sense that like the Cavaliers or the magic uh the Pelicans are ranked ahead of them I mean the Pelicans won 49 games last year um like the Pacers again made it to the Conference Finals so I’m not super worked up about it I think um once the Grizzlies get to Center then we will move up in those Power Rankings but as of now the griz’s have a lot to prove got a lot to prove you got to see a Y jiren and J and Desmond all playing at the same time also I think it’s fair to have concerns about the Grizzlies overall and their health issues as a team look at the games played per season for johnar Desmond Bane and jiren Jackson Jr and oh by the way Marcus Smart it’s not ideal and then you consider the front Court where it’s like we need Brandon Clark to play coming off that Achilles injury so not ideal but the future of course is bright I’m going to be very optimistic about this team I would expect the Grizzlies to have a better season uh than a lot of these teams that listed ahead of them however as far as Power Rankings go for the end of June or the middle of June yeah it’s cool we don’t have a center um we will fix it all right uh I think that’s everything for today again not a lot of concrete information but um there are of course so many ways the Grizzles can go and it’s a fun for me at least to think about what those ways might be anyways again NBA draft one week from today I’m extremely excited about it I’ll keep 1. I don’t want cappella, but I would like Edey or ware. Getting another pick would be awesome. The 2025 pick I don’t care about because I fully expect it to be a bottom pick. Please no filapowski , he’s not gonna amount to much

  2. I’d love to see the Grizzlies draft Zach Edey and sign a cheap contract big to hold the fort until Edey acclimates to the NBA. Edey has the drive and potential to help the Grizzlies get over the hump and win a championship! Like his style or not, he sets screens, bangs bodies in the paint, and makes free throws. People doubted Luka Doncic's style too. Let's get the guy who’s willing to prove himself and has the drive to do so. With the latest NBA draft and trade rumors, plus the summer league schedule, it's an exciting time for Grizzlies fans!
