Lakers have SECRETLY HIRED JJ Reddick?! | Importance of Hiring BEFORE Draft + Lakers TRADING Up?

[Music] welcome back everyone following the Dan Hurley drama the Lakers have turned their attention back to their prior coaching candidates with the primary one of course being JJ reic who according to reports may have already been hired by them too now keep in mind that it’s not coming from Shams W or anyone like that but from Anthony Irwin and according to him the Lakers have hired JJ reck to become their next head coach which I think we all expect happen but nothing has been made official quite yet and according to Cham shiria there has not been any agreement between them and I’ll let you hear about what he had to say yeah Sean speaking of coaches JJ reick looks like the deal uh is Final in La so congrats to you sounds like sounds like you were correct the whole time yeah deal look like though we saw it on the internet feels like did he did a similar deal that they offered Earle like what’s the money like do you have any idea and J J Jay will also said this morning on uh get up I believe yep he said yeah there yeah go ahead there’s not an agreement as far as I know for JJ reing as of right now we’re speaking right now almost 1:45 pm. eastern time um what this stands is JJ reick went in to LA on Saturday and had in-person meetings multiple hours with Lakers with the Lakers brass with Rob pinka the general manager vice president bassador operations ownership as well I’m told his meetings on Saturday were very impressive all the Char characteristics you see in JJ reic that you could Envision in JJ reic those all shine there of course we don’t know exactly what kind of Coach he’s going to be until he’s in that seat when you deal with adversity when you deal with losing three games in five nights when you deal with a player when you deal with a locker room issue like there’s there’s things that come about you guys all played you guys have been a part of it we’ve all we’ve covered it as well there’s always issues that come up how will JJ reck how would he handle that when he’s in that situation but listen as far as where his situation and where stands in this process I said it May 24th I said June 4th and his status as a front runner to be the next Lakers coach has not changed since those dates and it has not changed now I think what the Lakers are doing now with Rob pink and that that group is doing now is taking the next few days after the NBA Finals now that JJ reick is done with his finals duties and now finally get to making a decision and getting to it as far as a head coach they do want to have their head coach in place by the draft the draft is next week again until we get an official confirmation on it from a more reliable source I would be a little bit hesitant to call JJ reick their head coach though with that being said I do expect it to eventually happen whether it’s sooner or later reic will very likely become the 29th head coach in Laker franchise history and with that in mind how should we feel about it and what would be the best way to make him a good first year head coach we’ll talk about exactly that during today’s video but before we get too far into it if you want to stay up to date with everything Lakers throughout talking about the importance of the Lakers hiring reig if they did in fact hire him which would probably be a good thing rather than waiting in my opinion after all we are only a little over a week away from the NBA draft and while I from like to have a head coach before then as they do have a couple of draft picks with one of them being a top 20 pick and if you don’t have a head coach for that then you’re drafting a player without having any input from the guy that will be coaching that player and that would be something I’d like to avoid if I were them not only that though but you obviously want their input on the guys that you’re drafting I mean with them apparently viewing reic as a quote unquote long-term option for their team and a guy with Pat rly kind of potential and I think you should be asking him about the guy that you’re drafting if he really does end up being with their team for 5 to 10 years then he’ll be coaching that player for that entire duration or at least I hope he would be as that would mean they hit on the player that they drafted which they really do need to do after not getting much of any production from their 2023 draft picks though it definitely is still too early to write them off I imagine they would like to get a more immediate impact from who they draft next potentially with them drafting a more NBA ready kind of player now I have no idea if that’ll happen or not but again the point here is that they should be having that conversation with their head coach who they may or may not already have picked out but I really do hope they do before the end NBA draft I mean it would be one thing if they had no draft picks or maybe just a late second round pick but again they have a your lottery Pick and according to reports they might even be thinking about trading up higher and that would only make having a head coach even more important by that point simply put you do not want to make any addition to your team without having a head coach I don’t care if we’re talking about a rookie a 15-year bed or the 15th guy on your bench you want the input from the guy that will be coaching them and if he does not think that player would be a good fit for their team then you you probably want to know that before you draft or sign that player which you obviously cannot do if you don’t have a head coach before that point and that will become even more important during free agency and well that’s not very long after the NBA draft ends in fact it’s kind of already begun like I talked about during my last video due to a rule change regarding free agency every NBA team can negotiate with their own free agents following the NBA Finals meaning the Lakers can work out a new contract with a guy like tan Prince right now if they wanted to and again you definitely do want the input from your head coach before doing something like that and every moment they wait to her head coach be wasted time now don’t get me wrong they should not wait to sign anybody but they do run the risk of their head coach not having a good plan for that player and if they would sign a player that reic would not really want or cannot Envision within his Playbook then that could be a waste and that’s something they should want to avoid with all of that in mind here though I cannot imagine they’ll wait too much longer whether that be JJ reic or not I think they will hire a new head coach though I do think that it will be reic and they have a lot of work to do between now and the next 2 weeks not only with the NBA draft in their own free agents but then with signing free agents on the open market although potentially making a trade or two all of which they will need their head coach to be on board with I mean the NBA draft in their own free agents are one thing but making a big change to your team is another thing entirely and that is what tends to happen in early July you never know what free agency might bring and for team like the Lakers they have a lot of options and if I’m being honest I’m a little bit worried about it over overwhelming a first time head coach I mean if they’re making multiple draft picks altering their team through free agency and making trades that could be a lot to take in and especially for a guy that has never been head coach before on any level now I’m not saying they should avoid doing any of that but they definitely should keep it in mind I will be keeping redic very involved with every move they make not only to get his input but to help him feel comfortable with every move they make though I think that can only do so much even by involving him he’ll likely be overwhelmed if they don’t put a good coaching sta around him and I’ve been very adamant about the importance of this simply put they got to be willing to spend money to put good staff around him I’m talking about one two or even three former head coaches that to me is what it’ll take to remove the risk that will come with a first-time head coach and well that will come with financial demand the better background of a coach the more you need to pay them to join your team and they need to be willing to open up their wallet which they thankfully do appear willing to do I know a lot of people were angry about the offer they gave to Dan Hurley but I think they showed they’re willing to spend money he would have been a firsttime NBA head coach after all and that contract would have immediately put him in the top six of highest paid coaches and who knows maybe he could have negotiated that deal even higher as I for don’t believe that he truly thought about taking their job to begin with but again the point here is that they do appear willing to spend money and with the money they’ll likely be saving by hiring an unproven head coach like reick they can use that money to put a good staff around him I’m talking about guys like now former Cleveland head coach JB biera Sam Cassell or the favorite head coach for Anthony Davis with that being James burgo I would like to see at least one of them on their staff and I think the happy medium here to make Anthony Davis have you to offer burgo a big contract or at least if he does not end up becoming the Cleveland Cavaliers head coach which does appear to be a possibility by the way but regardless I think they need their Le assistant to be a former head coach with a good NBA background including multiple years being a head coach although being a good fit to pair with JJ reic but to wrap everything up here though they have a lot of work to do with their new head coach not only by hiring them but then getting them up to speed on their plan for the NBA draft free agency any alterations they want to make to their team and then coming to an agreement on the coaching staff to put around him which they may or may not view the same way and with all that being said what do you guys think how do you feel about the report claiming
