🚨 Woj details JJ Redick’s Lakers contract as a first-year head coach | NBA Today

welcome back to NBA today we just got breaking news about what 15 16 minutes ago ESPN sources say that JJ reic has agreed on a 4-year contract to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers R plinka offered the job this morning and reic started working on a staff to surround himself with experience and the guy who tweeted that about 16 minutes ago it was NBA Insider Adrien wowski uh WJ how did all of this come about well Rob palenka the Lakers uh they reached out to JJ reck his Representatives uh this morning early this morning uh eastern time and made JJ reic an offer to become the Lakers next head coach spent several hours negotiating on that offer and then I’m told now a four-year contract for JJ reck to become the next coach of the Lakers he met with Rob palenka jeie bus uh last weekend in La you know spent Saturday with them continue to talk into this week and know JJ reic reemerged in this process after Connecticut’s Dan Hurley had turned down the Lakers early last week and now you know he starts to work on a coaching staff he’s had a lot of thoughts about potential candidates he might like uh to bring in around him certainly with an emphasis on experience uh and certainly the defensive side of the the ball having somebody there you know who brings a lot of credentials on that end but I think for the Lakers you know JJ reck was certainly a candidate they identified very early as a candidate you know they kind of cooled on him as they went through that pursuit of Hurley but once Hurley had moved on you know he was front and center along with James bergo who’s a very serious candidate in Cleveland now and now reck listen the Lakers know what they’re up against JJ reck knows what he’s up against he has not coached really on any level uh other than his son’s teams his teams but there certainly are examples of coaches who’ve come into the league had success uh in modern times and you know previous eras there there’s certainly a lot of examples for reic to learn from but I think initially surrounding him uh with assistance that he trusts you know that uh understand what he’s up against and I think there’s a learning curve here everybody knows that but the Lakers see a tremendous upside with reic his ability to connect with players his High basketball IQ and certainly there are going to be elements of the job many of them you know that he’s going to have to uh learn quickly and certainly part of that’s going to be trial and era okay so you mentioned Dan Hurley turning down the contract offer it was six years right JJ has now agreed to a four-year contract tell us a little bit more about the terms why they are agreeing on a four-year contract in this one I think four years for someone who hasn’t been a head coach yet or certainly even an assistant coach in the league you know that’s you know about on uh course of what you would see it’s a negotiation and so certainly you know if you’re the Lakers you know you make a longer deal make a longer offer potentially to a Dan Hurley who also you know is entrenched in a significant coaching job and someone you’re trying to lure out of that JJ reck is somebody who’s very much wanted to get into coaching obviously he works here with us at ESPN but you know becoming a head coach in the league has been a goal of his there’s been interest uh in different forms in him throughout the league both as a head coach and in the front office you know but four years for a firsttime head coach in the NBA you know that’s about the norm you’re going to see you know the five-year deals typically are more for somebody on their second job somebody who’s won at a high level and it’s much rare you see you know the six years or even uh the beyond that like Eric spoler got but Eric spoler has won multiple championships one of the great coaches of all time you know you’re going to raate out differently you know in these kind of negotiations when you haven’t been a head coach yet but four years is about right uh for this situation I would I would think okay that makes sense still a lot to prove there for JJ reic we’ll see what happens thank you w he [Music]

Adrian Wojnarowski joins NBA Today to explain the details of JJ Redick’s contract and the “tremendous upside” he brings to the Los Angeles Lakers organization after agreeing to become the franchise’s next head coach.

  1. This is idiotic. He has ZERO coaching experience. He should have started somewhere else first before the Lakers. This is ALL LEBRON, 100%

  2. This was the Lakers plan the entire time crazy he gets hired after the Hurley mess and after the Finals are over

  3. Woj managed to say a sentence of 2 minutes without any punctuations…. Why can't they give him just a little media training.

  4. Jj is out of the ABC nba tv broadcast 😂😂 yaaaass

Honestly, I had this recent nba finals games on in the BACKGROUND, with the volume on low or mute.

Why would I want to listen to jj, who the great Jerry West once called jj, a dumb@$$ white shooter standing in the corner who can't dribble.😂

  5. Jj will be the 8th nba head coach who will try to turn cam reddish into a 10th man on the roster.

Jj will have the privilege of making bron Jr into an 11th man on a nba roster.

  6. If the Clips picked up Jeff Van Gundy as an assistant, hope JJ picks up Jeff’s former partner Mark Jackson as a top assistant.

  7. Lebron is a storyteller. They never intended to hire Danny Hurley. This was planned to make a horrible offer to Hurley knowing he wouldn't take. Why do you think the reason is for Woj not saying what the money is??????????? It's a shame how sneaky Lebron James is. I definitely lost respect for him. Mark Jackson, you deserved at least an interview.

  8. This is ridiculous….I guess all we want to do is make LeGm happy…

36 years a laker fan and I’m more worried now, then ever.

1st year coaches for us DO NOT WORK!!!!

  9. What a joke i like jj redick but head coach of Lakers that's ridiculous no experience lakers record gonna be 40-42

  10. Woj used as a pawn by LeBron and Maverick Carter.

Los Angeles always wanted Redick but they knew it looked like LeBron handpicked Redick, so they went through the motions with Hurley and “missed” (by lowballing) and now “settle” for their (actual) main candidate.

Wait until Los Angeles shockingly drafts Bronny after Klutch claimed for the last few months it wasn’t important to LeBron or Bronny.

  11. I don’t mind the people hating in the comments cause everyone acting like they know basketball but most of the media people from ESPN and FS1 are such haters it’s kinda sickening… can’t wait till JJ actually does a good job.

  13. Lakers fans were trying to convince everyone that the JJ narrative was all made up. The Lakers brought Hurley in and the fans said: "See, we told you ESPN just made the JJ stuff up."
