Bobby Marks BREAKS DOWN the Alex Caruso trade to the Thunder, Josh Giddey to the Bulls | NBA on ESPN

all right greetings from Los Angeles the ESPN offices and I am out here for a couple days of TV busy busy busy we’ve got plenty of content on espn.com we have the extension article came out uh today historic class you can go read about that we’ve got the free agency guide that is being in the process of being updated we got spending tiers we got the free agents I would pay we got JJ reic hired in Los Angeles we did a full hour of TV we’ve got a trade um with uh like drawing a blank Josh giddy going to Chicago and Alex Caruso going to Oklahoma City um we’ve got Pascal sakam agreed we’ve got plenty of content to talk about uh we’re putting up Graphics showing kind of what how uh rosters are impacted cap impacted we can thank my 18-year-old for um we’ve gone away from the Whiteboard and now we’ve actually uh somewhat professional here so with a hat tip to a graduating senior in high school um so let’s talk a little bit uh giddy to Chicago and then um uh Caruso to Oklahoma City here you know when when the trade came through I’m just grabbing my phone that I got a text from two two different um general managers um the one question from both was what picks were involved what draft picks was Oklahoma City sending um Chicago it turned out to be none this is a clean trade this is a straight swap one for one type trade here um and I think that’s probably what catches me a little bit off guard I like Josh giddy as a player um I think he will do well in Chicago I thought I think certainly when we saw in the playoffs here kind of um didn’t fit in um you know Oklahoma City’s got two guys that need the ball in their hands and I think giddy will go to Chicago um I think he’ll be their you know primary playmaker here you’ll probably have Kobe white play off the ball we’ll see what happens with Zack LaVine we’re going to talk about Chicago in a minute here um but I did think that considering that um Oklahoma City is sitting on a bounty full could you try to squeeze them even if it was a Denver first in 20129 or um you know something else just for that one for one swap there so that’s probably my critique I guess regarding that um when you look at it from a contract standpoint um where still in the 23 24 cap year so it doesn’t turn over until July 1 um Caruso had 9.4 9.46 in this year there’s no the contract’s basically over so there’s no additional money Oklahoma City does not pay him for this year it will end come um you know June 30 so 946 there 94 9.46 this year and then 9.9 that’s the number to keep an eye on there was um $3 million guaranteed part of the deal it will get guarant guaranteed to make the deal work um he’s on an expiring contract he can be extended 6 months from let’s say if the deal happened today uh six months from now so you’re looking at close to Christmas time um for four years $79 million um he is uh extension eligible he can also extend with at a limited number here and this is an a rule that’s being changed uh for this year uh you can extend for 120% off your um off your number um or the you know average player salary number and you can uh extend for a total of four years including what’s left on your contract so Caruso technically could extend for three years and uh I don’t have the number let’s say 40 40 and change um for example here um for uh for uh Chicago going there going there way is you know giddy is entering the last year of his contract for next year it’s $8.3 million so there is a little bit of savings there when you look at it he is extension eligible um up until October 21st there are no restrictions um he can be extended up for five years 225 I don’t think he’s going to get 225 um how I look at it from Oklahoma City’s perspective I think it’s a huge win when you get an all Def and I have my notes from our offseason guy guide here two years in a row all defense um a terrific contract I know you’re going to probably have to pay him um to keep him and I think that’s certainly the understanding of where Oklahoma City is um you know top I’m looking at my not topwing defender in the league all defense two two years in a row finished first in deflections sixth in steals 15th in total charges taken um Chicago was outscored 7.2 points per 100 with him off the floor eligible to sign a 4-year 78.8 million extension six months from now um Oklahoma City still has $31.5 million in cap space they still have the 12th pick in the draft their priorities this off season certainly is um what what direction you go with room uh Isaiah Joe Aaron Wiggins both guys got team options you can certainly decline those options and and give them New Deals or you can actually exercise their options and extend off their numbers and and have that cap hit um hit in 20 um in uh in 2526 I think it from from from kuso and giddy standpoint financially also the ability to keep Alex Cru out a four-year $78 million contract or maybe even it’s less is going to be less expensive than what maybe would Josh giddy was going to be so that’s my take on it from Oklahoma City’s perspective I really like it when you have Shay Caruso Lou Dort Jaylen Williams Chad holr it’s a starting quality starting five and then you still have Cas Wallace You’ got Isaiah Joe you’ve got Aaron Wiggins you’ve got Osman Jang um you’ve got Kendrick Williams you’ve got Jaylen Williams um it’s it’s you know and we’ll see what happens what they do what they do with um with cap space um also here I’m just grabbing my thunder notes here so we can talk about them and Mr giddy um for Chicago now listen there’s more to come this is not the first and only move that’s going to happen in Chicago here our Taurus carnas has gone on the record he said the roster wasn’t good enough now did I think Alex Cru was going to be the first guy traded out as far as how you were going how things were going to change I didn’t be considering that he’s been the most constant um and probably one of their better players consistent players um so I didn’t think it was going to be him so that’s the first move that happens giddy comes in I’m pulling up his notes from uh when he was um you know when he was in Oklahoma City listen um third straight year 12 points six rebounds four and a half assists became the fourth player in Oklahoma City history with double double digit triple doubles threeyear body of work um we saw in the Dallas series he was basically targeted um Dallas shot 60% from the field when giddy was the primary Defender So Def defensively offensively um 21% in that series like you know Gafford and Lively 8.4 feet of Separation so getting to Chicago works if you basically build your offense around him if he is your primary ball handler and he’s got the ball in his hand and I guess you’re shifting Kobe white and we’ll see what happens with line and D rozan then I understand it here um but as I said I am concerned that there wasn’t more draft Equity here I am more concerned that the cost to keep giddy is going to be more expensive than Caruso um and we’ll see what else Chicago has in store they’ve got the 11th pick in next week’s draft they need some major major front Court help basically Nicole vuik is the only front Court player they have on their roster you’ve got Patrick Williams a restricted free agent if they tender him a qualifying offer Andre Drummond’s a free agent we’re we’ll see what happens with um D rozan um when you include the um Patrick Will Williams qualifying offer they’ve got 146 million in salary you you count that towards that um because the player can sign it um they’re basically $25 million under the uh under the tax not including D rozan so we’ll keep an eye on what happens there is there a move to get off lavine’s contract we’re going to hear a lot about him he’s owed three for 137 maybe you break that up into two players um but I do think it’s just the start of things in Chicago um I understand it why the Bulls did it I thought as I said and teams agreed with me that maybe you can get a little bit more I really like it for Oklahoma City considering that you did not have to give up a draft pick I think he fits your window your financial window certainly um you know as far as where he is salary-wise certainly one of the best defender Wing Defenders uh in the NBA we will talk soon [Music] [Applause] [Music] it’s NBA on is

  1. Chicago gotta go with the youth movement….resign Williams, let derozan walk, pray they can make a trade for vucivic and Lavine…white giddy and Williams is a decent start to a nice young core

  2. The Bulls had the best asset in the trade (Caruso) but couldn't even manage to get a few 2nd round picks 🤦‍♂. And the fact they were asking for 1st round picks last year makes it look worse

  3. This was a political trade!!! Plus SgA ball dominance quieted giddey play on the court!! Giddey can go back to his sophomore season style of play.

  4. Why did OKC not do this last year? If this was an option why not get Caruso for the full playoff run? I don't get the logic

  5. I’m happy for Caruso and Giddy. It’s a better situation for both of them. But clearly the Bulls got F’d in the A here. They should have been able to easily sell high on Caruso

  6. bulls cant even get a pick okc is desperate to trade giddey. man yes they might get the better player on the future if ever.but at least get 2 2nd round picks

  7. i dunno i might be crazy, but Caruso is not that special, dude is hurt constantly, really struggles on offense and thats on a team where he basically has a green light to shoot whatever he wanted, Josh Giddey on the other hand is a young player thats improving and gets everyone involved, i feel like bulls won this trade by a lot
