Sam Vecenie Mock Draft on The Athletic: Timberwolves – 27. DaRon Holmes (Dayton) | 37. Terrence Shannon Jr (Illinois)

27 Minnesota Timberwolves

DaRon Holmes | 6-9 big | 21 years old | Dayton

Holmes had an outstanding season at Dayton, winning All-American honors by averaging 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 blocks while hitting 54.4 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from 3. He’s a versatile big who has a lot of answers for opponents’ ball-screen coverages. He can pick-and-pop, short roll to pass, short roll to finish himself or dive to the rim to catch a lob. Defensively, he’s a good shot blocker and has shown the potential to stay with guards for a couple of slides on the perimeter.

Another big might not seem like a need for the Wolves, but this team is about to get expensive. Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns take up a ton of cap space, and Naz Reid can potentially hit free agency again in 2025. If the team wants to continue its two-big alignment, Holmes is seen as a potential 4 or 5 option by some teams.

37 Minnesota Timberwolves (via Grizzlies): Terrence Shannon Jr. | 6-6 wing | 23 years old | Illinois

No way Daron falls to 27. Shannon will probably be gone at 37 too but he might be there at 27.

As someone who really enjoys draft evaluations, I don’t understand draft mocks, especially after the 10th pick. You can kind of predict the top 10 players, but realistically, you don’t know who will be taken before the 27th pick. Personally, I think the Wolves will trade at least one of these picks. However, it’s interesting that the Athletic predicts Wolves taking two experienced players – something I would expect from our front office.

  3. Hawk Tuah from Morehead State can really drain it, that’s the pick 🤣

Very strange draft I was looking at Holmes and Shannon as targets last year hoping the Wolves would trade into the mid-40s for someone they’d like before they both pulled their names.

It’s probably a little of column A and a little of column B in that maybe this year’s draft is just that weak these two are better positioned and maybe they just improved their games that much in a year.

I mean it was a minority point of view, but some debated whether Edey would be drafted let alone be a possible lottery pick last year.

Rarely has the return to college for another year been so beneficial.
