Lakers still on path to hire JJ … Monty Williams not being considered – Windy updates | First Take

so after firing Darin ham the Lakers swung and missed on yukon’s Dan Hurley and now they’re in desperate need of a head coach as The Season’s just about four months away we know our own JJ reck is a top candidate and Stephen A threw another name in the mix I know we’ve been talking a lot about JJ reick but with Monty Williams available that is a situation that the Los Angeles Lakers should look at obviously jeie bus I’m rooting for her to find the right person for the job respect bra pinka what he’s going to do so listen they all going to be a part of of the process and we’ll see what happens and um you know I I think Monty Williams definitely should be a candidate for that job who’s ready for their second wind yep that would be this girl and I don’t even need more caffeine Wendy please I’d like an update could you give me the latest on the Lakers coaching search well I know that everybody has really gotten into their feelings about this coaching search and it has certainly been a long process but as far as I have been told um the Lakers are still on path to hire JJ reic it is not a done deal that’s only that’s the most important thing uh do I think it’ll be a done deal yes I do I do think there’s some negotiation has to happen between the sides but I expect it to come together but I would not make the Assumption on anything because I’ve seen too much with this coaching search as far as I know as of what I know right now Monty Williams is not being considered here and so this is going to be I I guess JJ reic um and I would guess relatively soon but um don’t get ahead of yourself just let it play out and I know that there’s a lot of anxiety about this as long as the Lakers have a coach in place it doesn’t even really need to be by the draft although I expect it will be um for summer league I think it’ll all work out and it’ll all be about the next steps which Lakers have a lot of important business this summer Monica tell me this do you feel like the Lakers and JJ are a good fit so when this news broke I I might be in the minority here but my first thought was oo the Lakers could lose their guy because to me the reality and the expectation in Detroit the opportunity to really mold a group of young men to really put your fingerprint on the franchise to have Runway to have reasonable expectations and measurable amounts of progress and growth is in Detroit like and I’m not saying we love JJ he’s our colleague he could go and rock it out and we could all look crazy on the back end but we’ve seen for the Lakers even coaches that have been successful it’s like a two-year term out there and so I just my thought was that JJ reick has the autonomy if he so desires to say wait a minute I want to go explore what’s going on in Detroit and I know Ci’s comparison may not quite be there unless you are a Detroit native and natural place although I’ve had great summers in Detroit I must say um but I think the opportunity to really start with less pressure and even grow as a head coach because just like players grow head coaches grow I think Detroit presents that for JJ UD do you feel like JJ and the Lakers are a good fit I think at this stage of the game I think it’s the best fit for the Lakers right now I think you’ve done so much due diligence M just got released yesterday yeah it’s kind of hard to bring him in right now and kind of start the process all over again I really do agree with Monica I think the opportunity for JJ and Detroit is definitely exciting just because you come in you can implement your own system you can be yourself you can be your best version you got young guys who are willing to listen and willing to sacrifice a little bit more right now so I think that’s a great situation and also for money right now man I mean he just came off a ass whooping that took a year and I think that took a lot out of him I think for money if you get 65 of them things coming to you and you can go sit back and take a year off and get back these jobs continue to open open come come open this is a players League one of these players one of these Superstars going to get mad with their coach and the organization going to get him out of there and man will have another opportunity at some point he doesn’t have to rush to this situation now I actually think with everything that has been going on at this particular time the Lakers and JJ reick I think that’s the best opportunity that’s the best match right now yeah listen JJ’s a friend right a colleague he he’s an incredible basketball mind want to see him get the job want to see him succeed I’m just curious UD from a players perspective is there any concern that he doesn’t have coaching experience prior I think it’s more so the things that the guys can’t worry I mean the things that the guys can’t control and I think that’s what most of the NBA is I SP I spent 20 years in the league and the last five years of my career was focusing on the things that the guys couldn’t control because that’s what these guys in this generation do when my generation was playing you just gave us a task we ran through a wall and did what we were told to do these guys have a different mindset they’re a brand they have businesses they have families they have this and that going on so it’s a lot of other things that are going through these guys Minds so when you’re JJ and you’re walk into a system like that and a situation like that you don’t want to have to deal with all these other things and I had a conversation with JJ I looked him in his eyes and I say JJ what I said and how I feel has nothing to do with I think about you as a basketball coach or a basketball mind it’s about most of these guys in the NBA focusing on the things that he that they can’t control he’s going to walk into a locker room where the guys that already have an opinion and have formed an opinion he’s going to have to fight that he’s going to have to resist that he’s goingon to have to make sure it’s one band One sound One Voice being heard every single yeah I stole it from drum line I stole it from drum line you got to make sure it’s one band One sound every single time when he speaks and that’s the thing that he’s going to have to fight and most coaches won’t have to fight that and like said he won’t have to fight that battle in Detroit Wendy JJ very much wants to be the Lakers head coach so regardless of Detroit or anything else now if you’re asking what’s the better fit as Monica and UD have said you could make a case you could put together a white paper explaining why it is because there’s less pressure for a first-time coach but I do think JJ wants to be the Lakers coach I don’t think it’s an ideal fit in a vacuum because you’re taking a team that’s older and mature and expected to win now and putting in a firste coach I don’t care I’m I don’t have the research I wasn’t alive but I’ll bet red hour boox first year as head coach he made mistakes and screwed stuff up every first year coach is going to you’re going to pay a price of experience that’s what happens on the other hand I think JJ has a couple of things working for him in any job that he takes but especially this Lakers job first off as soon as he walks into the locker room he does have credibility with the players one of the most important things that you can do if you have star players on your team in the NBA is for the players to have credibility with the coach to have credibility with the players it’s it’s a it’s something that is fragile and is monitored all the time and many many times in the history of the NBA when a coach has lost um that trust or and belief from their players it has no chance JJ will have that whereas another for Dan Hurley wouldn’t have had that as great of as great of a resume Dan Hurley would have not walked in and instantaneously had the credibility that JJ will have the second thing is the one thing that the Lakers definitely struggled with last year was tactics tactically they struggled especially in that series that they lost to the nuggets and you could hear it from the players Anthony Davis flat out said it after one of the losses about the tactics JJ reck very clearly because we’ve listen to this podcast is obsessed and very focused on tactics so I think you know the contract will be interesting that he gets we know that they offered Dan Hurley six years LeBron is you know at the end of his career how many years years will the Lakers offer I think I if I was JJ I’d ask for six quite frankly if you’re going to give another rookie NBA coach six I’d like to have six so that’s why I’m not going to sit here and say oh yeah done deal let’s go once’s once’s a press conference let’s just make sure it gets done but I do think it’s it’s close um but this will be interesting and I think everybody’s had weeks now this is not a snap decision everybody’s considered all the angles the Lakers players the Lakers in front office JJ himself everybody understand ends a challenge and we will see how it plays out it’s going to be fascinating yeah one thing I just want to mention really quick before I come to UD which I find interesting is for people that are in an uproar that JJ didn’t have coaching experience right obviously played for many many years in the NBA was a star at Duke as well Steve cerr didn’t have coaching experience when he took over for the Warriors I mean he was a GM of the Sun so I I I don’t want to diminish that but we just talked about how they’re the most annoying fan base because they’re so spoiled and how entitled and how successful Steve Kerr was and he never had you know NBA head NBA head coaching experience so I think the thing that jumps out to me in that comparison a little bit more than the experience or lack thereof is the age of that group and the experience of that group right yeah the Warriors the year that they won in 2014 I believe they were 22 to one odds to get there and so they’re again I won’t say house money entirely but I think if I remember correctly you when the Warriors hit people were kind of like whoa like and then it opened up this window that surprised us literally the only thing that you say checkbox successful in the current purple and gold is championship and I just don’t know how realistic that is and the point that I’ll make about JJ I gotta kind of disagree with you on this one Wendy yes he will have their respect as a great basketball mind he’s going to have to earn their respect as a coach just like Steve Kerr had to earn his respect as a coach and I can remember when SPO came into his own coaching job and he was the head coach he was a guy who used to rebound and work me and Dwayne out late nights and do all those things and when he got the coaching job he had to earn that respect from us and rightfully so he did it and he earned it they’re not just going to give that to him tell us about the earning respect process so he’s going to have to earn that respect as a coach but they’ll give him the respect because he has a great basketball mind and he’s a former player but respect as a coach he will have to earn that Wendy this coaching search obviously was very stressful for me you know as a DieHard Yukon Huskies fan you know to make it about myself you can ask W I was like texting him every five seconds of course W gave me nothing but anyway I’m happy Dan Hurley stayed Pat but with that being said Wendy why the heck has this not happened like why are we still talking about it and what are we waiting for yeah I I do think that there’s probably some stuff that went on that we’ll probably never know about in this process I I also think that it was important for JJ um to work and complete his his stated um you know intention of doing the finals for um ABC I mean I don’t know if he’d ever say that but I think that was a factor um but I just to what UD said like you are correct UD of course as a 20-year veteran uh you know you’ve seen many coaches have to prove it um just with LeBron I would just say like I watched LeBron never really give David blat a chance David blat never had a chance from day one as his head coach even though blat had a ton of international experience a very impressive resume honestly he never had a chance yeah tyou was a first-time head coach and had instantaneous respect from LeBron um tyou is proven to be an excellent coach uh he will have he will he will be more tyo JJ than David blat and you know the the Lakers could have made a hire of a different person you know not anybody in particular but they could have hired somebody that would have had a challenge you know being more tou than David blat when it comes to LeBron on day one day one JJ has a real chance with a player like LeBron and AD and I think if you’ve got those guys on your on your on your roster that has to be a concern I think that was part of the Lakers calculus for sure somebody tell me what is gonna mean for if this is successful like what is it what does you mean for JJ in this in year one if he takes this what are what is success defined as from this organization I think they make the playoffs I think if they even make the playoffs I think that’s successful now with that being said it’s not gonna be easy in the west you got to deal with Denver again you got to deal with Minnesota again you got to deal with all these teams again I don’t know if you can hold that against JJ because Denver just won the championship a year ago Minnesota is getting better so I don’t know if you can hold out guess JJ his first year but yeah he’s got to get the Lakers in the playoff okay for sure all right all right I think that’s fair I think it’s fair okay sure it sounds sounds reasonable but we’ll see how go yeah with LeBron and AD the playoffs I feel like that’s like Baseline but anyway go ahead sorry yeah [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. Success is that our tactics look competent. Lakers may or may not win it all but they have to look competent. They looked clueless under Ham way before he was in the hotseat. The Lakers won in spite of Ham, not because of him.

  2. Does JJ have rings? What makes him a such a top contender. It’s almost as if he considered a Phil Jackson or Coach Pop

  3. In my opinion, the Lakers struggling in making the right moves, falls mostly on Jeanie Buss. She gives off those vibes of, it’s my team, I’ll run it how I want, & nobody can tell me nothing. I say she needs to be replaced or step down.

  4. LeBron still better player than those young ones. To win championship he needs good players. To win Championships should go to Warriors

  5. So JJ gets a pass because he's vocal and everyone wants to kiss up to him, but literally same scenario with Steve Nash and it was all racial…when Nash is much more qualified in that he was a star player and a POING guard…

  6. Hire LaBron James to be the player coach. I’d love to see him get himself fired. If no coach is good enough for him then make him the coach. Problem solved.

  7. JJ is a horrible hire smh it’s lakernation all day so I hope it wrong but this whole move is goofy smh

  8. another white former player getting a nba coaching job without any experience whatsoever – privilege as it gets.

  9. Y’all be mad at SAS cuz he not going to believe he’s a good hire like what his team will think. Yall got to remember Jj use to talk down on this roster. He also act like he the smartest on the planet

  10. Daaaaanm…..haslum uncle tomming too….. it's the end of black manhood …..im black and I'm watching My back from Toms

  11. McNutt is horrible. Her takes are terrible and interaction is just odd. Haslem is a great addition though.
