somewhere so now the the next Point gives what you have said previously if JJ did get the job as important as him being the head coach is now surrounding him with Elite coaching level talent to help make that transition smooth if he gets ready for his first NBA head coaching opportunity yeah I mean I mean you know just with any transition you have to it has to be tactical has to be smart you have to really design your staff according to your weaknesses and at this point you know when you’re talking about being a coach right most likely it’s all weaknesses at this point because you don’t know what you’re gifted at once the game starts right you know so you need someone who’s great at designing practice functional practices even though we’ve been in practices and we know what’s good like you know we can go through a practice like man this this is dys functional of a practice is horrible right he switch this drill make it this drill so that has to be designed right when you look at the the the season right when the season comes out you have to have an eye for days off traveling all that is part of coaching it ain’t just we get on the court and I just make subs and Sub in and sub out that’s not part of that’s the easy part it’s designing the the layout of how the season is supposed to run who does JJ know that as a coach uh I’m sure he knows a lot of people that are coaches I would say the first person that comes to mind is probably Coach K okay would be my first person I even know just giving their relationship first person who just took over for the Detroit Pistons uh TR langon former Duke basketball player wait he’s the he’s the head coach for no Trad Lane the president I believe the Pistons recently hired had to fire Monty Williams now he’s the coach that’s what he wanted the whole time but uh El BR um where was he at he’s he was in Philly he’s in Philly still he’s still in Philly so he’s still in Philly right so there’s people he can call and just ask questions to and pick their brain and imagine his assistant coaching staff so what you tring to say it’s a Duke thing it’s going to be a lot of it’s going to be the USA type [ __ ] JJ’s going to assemble Like A Team USA coaching staff type [ __ ] yeah of that level well I mean it still has to be it’s still the Lakers it’s still the Lakers dog and they GNA try to they G to try to have you replacement right in like it’s going to be right there for him for after what four years it’s a four year deal I think year two maybe but not now so they want to give him I mean with with assistant Co they’re gonna put an assistant coach like I they’ll [ __ ] around put M on the coaching staff maybe maybe I mean you’re going to put Avengers of assistant coaches the Avengers of assistant coach you’re going have to put experience around them yeah that’ll make that Adrian Griffin I would I wouldn’t be mad at Adrian being on the assist coach staff for that team so you guys you guys all play for good coaches play for bad coaches what are the ingredients if you could put them together to make the ideal NBA head coach ideal or it’s close to what you would consider to be what what makes a great NBA head coach I mean has it be he has to be a people person right he has to be a players coach and if he’s not the players coach there has to be players coaches on the staff that you can relay your hatred for this [ __ ] too right that’s that’s one right um you know practice times like there’s like little things that’s very important that people don’t really take in consideration practice times right having the perfect pra practice time uh shoot around times right um travel schedule is very important um under understanding you know rest days and workout days when to go hard um structure it’s just it’s just mostly the structure of it’s just the structure it’s it’s the template you got to have structure man who would you bring in player coach as assistant like your first assistant we’ve seen first and second first and second uh probably somebody with some head coaching experience right that can help be a good consiliary who’s out there probably bring back Phil you’ll bring back Phil well you know he he probably not going to do that though one because because he is the development coach that they all loved Phil H oh you talking thought about not going to play no second like you know you know what’s so funny they’re train they’re trainers like pin bery was over there right I believe at one point yeah I mean they had a they had a very good um training staff uh but from there like I’m going to get someone that the players can talk to that can work out where they can train I’ll probably get some younger talent in there that can really be active with the players especially my young group right so you know um so pimber was an assistant 2019 and 2022 went over to the Nuggets to become a shooting coach in 2022 makes sense bring him back um he could get you a bucket back in the day who’s local here like some of these development coaches like uh Olan um bring them to me your second huh you be you’re bringing in no for one one and two coaching staff is at this point is it’s how do I develop in-house first right so that’s very important right in-house development right so now you’re thinking about like teams like Denver you’re thinking about teams like um Golden State Warriors right um so I want to try to build the structure first so I would go after trainers uh but a great training staff so you know um Olen would feel and someone else d huh Dallas tra like you know what I mean they got Shem God over there there’s you know what I mean like so some of these people you think that is irrelevant the algorithm the the the analytics say these guys are helpful right so I’ll go after that group first and then from there really so do you think feel like the way that the Lakers are currently constructed there’s a lot of question marks still obviously with LeBron likely opting out uh reports saying he would likely resign two or threee deal with the Lakers is JJ put in a a situation is he set up for Success right now draft less than a week away free agency on the horizon with this roster [ __ ] looked like two years and out long JJ’s contract four years reportedly four years I’m giving two years like you said darham lasted two years uh I’m JJ I’m going solidify my legacy I’m going to get Mark Jackson and rayon Rondo now I’m goinging bring in Jeff Van Gundy at the tail in just if I need him Gundy so you want Mark jackon at Jeff Van Gundy he went to the Clippers Van Gundy just went to the Clippers wait like Stan Van Gundy or no no no Jeff his brother he was with Team USA too for Jeff was coaching the Celtics or he was just consultant special consultant Oh I thought you was talking about as a coach you’re saying as an assist OT yeah you talking about his three assistant on the bench yeah you talking about his first three assist Mark Rondo and and but Jeff is was the last time Jeff coach what 90 what let me he was in Houston was he in Houston I see he he was his assistant in Houston something like that for like quick little minute yeah last time he had an a official coaching job 2007 with the Rockets he was a senior consultant with the Celtics 2023 through 2024 and now lead assistant with the Clippers lead assistant Tyrone hire him as the lead assistant yeah I be so see him the tail end of that but he already gone so we about the older them 80s and 90s coaches because the style and the the the kids minds are so different you know and if they haven’t if they haven’t adjusted to the temperament of today’s era right you know coaching these guys versus you know Charles oaking him is very different the structure right you know what I mean so you sitting there saying stuff that you can say to these the your New York team and this these kids get your ass fired quick as [ __ ] they’ll turn on you they’ll turn on you quick yeah but they got to know times have changed though who like Jeff like some of them Old Coach got like that’s like saying don’t don’t raise your your son the way he supposed to be raised and just let him out here do what the [ __ ] he want to do no the game got structure too no our game got structure the game do and the old school structure is the structure the found Foundation attitude ethics professionalism all that [ __ ] is them Old School coaches trying to get get the foundation right all the new school [ __ ] y’all talking about that’s why you hire them other dude the trainers like you said the it fossilized coaching which is outdated but at the same time the foundation of that fossil is still where you get the DNA from you go inside the fossil you get the DNA you say this is where it begins you got to teach the fundamentals first we don’t need them from nothing else but that I think that’s where you bring the Old School coaches back into it you filter them in with the new school and you say hey look man we going to do the fundamentals first and then y’all freestyle that other [ __ ] on top of it because the one thing you going to do is run the [ __ ] back and you’re going to play [ __ ] hard see that structure has to be like young teams right like that’s why I said if any young team I’m going old school because when these kids are coming to the NBA they don’t know nothing right and for the most part I don’t know who said it I think anger said it right she said Oh I thought training camp was going to be harder H which is correct right and everybody got offended it’s correct College her college coach if you see how she acts most likely she was a th% harder than anything is ever going to face in the pros period right so same thing coming from college these kids are in these college programs that was harder than any NBA structure yep right so if you if you have a a old school coach I would want to give it to teams that are very young where it’s easier to mold them into hard work right so you know trying to put you know Jeff Van Gundy or not I don’t know Jeff personally a Stan Van Gundy on the Lakers no not St for sure not St nah he’s more back in Detroit he’s one of those teams Charlotte right putting structure into those teams like you got to have you you still got LeBron over there you got ad over there they’ve been their ways a long time and from there it’s just crashing you talking about 3our practices like that’s why I say Jeff because Jeff knows the veteran side all them vets he had in New York all the Vets he had in Houston like he understands the the seniority rules and and and and the longevity of that is maintaining the fitness maintaining nutrition making sure these old guys get the rest they need all that type [ __ ] you got Mark Jackson in there ex I mean I just think it’s dope I think that would be a dope move but they’ll do a more La Centric move though they’ll bring some La guys in there hey but Jeff is it uh with the time coaching job previously you both said that he has 15 years of experience from his playing days and understanding the intricacies of what it takes to be a head coach obviously spent several years in on the broadcasting side so he’s familiar with today’s game the look and feel of it coaching angle Rashad you said previously that he gets along with the brothers and that quote [ __ ] respect JJ mhm but do you think re can handle the pressure of being the Lakers head coach as his very first NBA coaching job yeah did Darin ham handle it yeah yeah Darin ham did right Western Conference W conference like what do y want him to do relax huh relax relx bro in two years what did Joe mou did Joe moula do reped to handle that nicely win in the championship in his second season but uh gifted a incredibly that that media is very different from this media here if JB bicker staff and Jamal Mosley can go out there and be good coaches Biggers have also fired uh this this off see now you got given the opportunity with no experience is what I’m saying just give an opportunity you never did it before you know what I’m saying y’all lasted a pretty substantial amount of time in the league so far I think JJ deserves for 20 and for 20 from the field and and in Ohio is very different from Owen 0 and20 in Los Angeles mhm right that’s just I mean the markets is so different so when you say did got no contract I told you what you need to do to get on this court you did it the only thing that didn’t happen is I didn’t do my job was get me on the court to get you on my job was say if you do all this I’m going to get you on the court you did it all and I didn’t now now I done lost you because now you’re like what the [ __ ] I did everything you told me to do and you still didn’t get me on the court now I can’t trust you I don’t want to play for you now it don’t even matter matter at that point you gave up on me so do you do you ask for a trade most likely that person will you’ll ask for a trade most most likely that person will okay I was told he going stop working hard he going to stop doing whatever told it was a man’s lead and when you get in these situations you might not play because there’s a [ __ ] getting paid more than you then then as a coach should you relay that message then see that’s the problem is if you raying the message and doing something else then that becomes the issue that’s always been an issue with us right cuz you can’t please everybody but at some point we all we all try to figure out what we need to do to get on the court right we all Y and if you give me if you I rather you it’s easier to just say hey hey not I I have no time for you right now this is my line up if somebody gets hurt maybe you can crack this line up but don’t give me something to do don’t give me a checklist and I go check this [ __ ] off you telling me run five hours a day and I’m out there running six and then you say yeah you know so I’m not going to give you a uh rdic checks many of the boxes on the Lakers extensive check checklist for their next head coach he’s drawn internal comparisons to a young Pat Riley as a coaching Prospect who jumped from plane to the broadcast Booth to the coaching chair uh the Los Angeles confident he can be their version of Eric spola or Steve Kerr a culture Setter who can grow with the franchise for over a decade and I also
