I’ll never not think of the Los Angeles Lakers as having 12 Titles. LA fans didn’t even know to celebrate when those Lakers teams were winning Titles. And guys like Shaq and Lebron weren’t signing with a team in Minnesota in the modern era. It’s as much as community accomplishment as it is for the players – especially now that local taxpayers actually pay for the stadiums.
Also, when Seattle gets a new team, do you really think they are not going to claim their Title? Minnesota should just claim those Titles and be done with it.

A few of these titles came in the BAA league which the NBA recognizes as their own. The NBL was another league which merged with the BAA to form the NBA. Technically they could acknowledge that title someday (I’m sure the Lakers have pressured the league on that matter)
This was all before the shot clock era btw. The Lakers played a game that ended with the score 19-18
On top of it, they never acknowledged those titles as their own until the Kobe/Shaq era

I’ve always thought that the NBL championship is legit. However, if you move a team such that the previous fans are no longer fans of the team, you cannot count those championships. Jackie Robinson did not play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Dodgers can’t claim the Brooklyn pennants.

When the Los Angeles Lakers won the 2001 NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers, Kobe Bryant was wearing this jacket in the locker room photos everyone assumed Jayson Tatum was gonna mimic. Look closely at the jacket! It’s says EIGHT-TIME Champions. They only counted their championships from 1972 onwards as their own championships, and they won their 8th championship as a Los Angeles-based team in 2001.
